Did AT&T help Kris Allen become the American Idol?

ai12

It’s over and done with now, and many of us Adam Lambert lovers have tried to make peace with the outcome of American Idol. As baffling as it may be, America prefers the bland, James Taylor-ish, All-American (READ: straight, married) boy next door to the possibly gay, glam-rock loving, shrieking goth balladeer. We get it. America has voted, and they want Keith Urban instead of KISS. Sad, but true. But now, after about a week of Internet buzzing, the media is starting to take seriously the claim that AT&T may have boosted the show’s text voting in favor of Kris Allen.

One of the biggest corporate sponsors of “American Idol,” might have influenced the outcome of this year’s competition by providing phones for free text-messaging services and lessons in casting blocks of votes at parties organized by fans of Kris Allen, the Arkansas singer who was the winner of the show last week.

Representatives of AT&T, whose mobile phone network is the only one that can be used to cast “American Idol” votes via text message, provided the free text-messaging services at two parties in Arkansas after the final performance episode of “American Idol” last week, according to the company and people at the events.

There appear to have been no similar efforts to provide free texting services to supporters of Adam Lambert, who finished as the runner-up to Mr. Allen.

Since then, angry supporters of Mr. Lambert have flooded online chat boards with messages claiming irregularities in the competition’s voting.

Officials of Fox Broadcasting declined to discuss the situation. In a statement issued Tuesday, a spokesman for AT&T said, “In Arkansas, we were invited to attend the local watch parties organized by the community. A few local employees brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested.”

Details of the voting support were first reported last week in an article in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Representatives of AT&T helped fans of Mr. Allen at the two Arkansas events by providing instructions on how to send 10 or more text messages at the press of a single button, known as power texts. Power texts have an exponentially greater effect on voting than do single text messages or calls to the show’s toll-free phone lines. The efforts appear to run afoul of “American Idol” voting rules in two ways. The show broadcasts an on-screen statement at the end of each episode warning that blocks of votes cast using “technical enhancements” that unfairly influence the outcome of voting can be thrown out.

And the show regularly states that text voting is open only to AT&T subscribers and is subject to normal rates.

[From the New York Times]

If any of this is true, it certainly doesn’t seem fair to me. Sure, I am biased since I think Adam Lambert was the best thing to happen to Idol since Kelly Clarkson- but if AT&T was going to organize power text tutorials in Arkansas for Kris Allen fans, then the same thing should have been done in San Diego for Adam’s fans. It seems obvious now that as much hype as Adam received, Kris Allen is much more suited for the mass media appeal that is American Idol – and perhaps the show’s sponsors were using their pull to make sure that happened. I think the most telling part of this article is that the power texts “CAN be thrown out.” That doesn’t mean that they WERE thrown out. And FOX, who has been historically quite guarded on the topic of Idol voting, isn’t about to start talking now.

oh jeez, what does this even have to do with anything – they’re both going to get deals anyway. This competition means nothing.

  2. ceenitall says:

Really is this a story? If Adam had won would this be such a big deal to you? Personally I didn’t watch much of this years show and I didn’t vote. It’s done, it can’t be changed, get over it.

Ever think that more people liked Chris then liked Adam?

  3. sarcra says:

It does seem unfair, but I don’t see how two viewing parties in Arkansas could make that big of a difference in the total votes, unless Kris only beat Adam by a very small number. It says that they were local AT&T reps who did this, so could they possibly have done it on their own, without the endorsement of corporate?

I personally think it is good that Adam Lambert didn’t win, and I think he’s great! The fact is, that even as a runner up, Idol is going to own his career for at least for a while, but coming in second, he should have a bit more creative freedom, and that can only be a good thing.

What I think happened is this: the votes were split three ways, between Adam, Danny and Kris. When Danny was eliminated, all of his votes went to Kris, who is much closer to Danny’s style as a performer. I think that is the reason Kris won, but I still maintain, coming in second was the best thing that could have happened to Adam. We all know he will have a career after this, from week one that was never even a question.

  5. Sol says:

I don’t mind Adam being second on AI simply because for me “seconds” have always had a better career than the actual winners.Except for Kelly and Carrie.Even some who didn’t make it to the finals had better careers. How about Jennifer Hudson or Chris Daughtry.

  6. Obvious says:

I think coming in 2nd was the best thing ever for Adam. I loved him and would have loved to see him win-but has anyone listened to the god-awful mess that Kara (or whatever) wrote for the winner? It’s horrendous. At least that doesn’t have to be his first single-then only decent winner song was the first season.

    Down with DioGuardi!!!!!

  7. WE HATE IDOL says:

Actually, many people don’t like Adam because his voice is GOD-AWFUL. It has nothing to do with his sexuality, as implied by whatever ignorant buffoon wrote this article.

I’m so sick of people saying Adam lost because he’s not straight and married. Get real. Kris Allen won because he has a better voice, and is more talented. Period, the end.

  8. Denise says:

Even Kris was heard saying “Adam deserves this” after the results were revealed. Kris and Adam will both be fine. They both have huge careers ahead of them. But the sad thing is that there always seem to be spoilers out there. Was it so important to the AT&T rep that the hometown boy win at any cost? Now poor Kris, who has done nothing but try his best to win this thing will always wonder if he really did win fair and square. But Chris Daughtry was asked how he felt after coming in second and he replied “I got over it…in about thirty seconds!” Adam was profoundly more talented than ANYONE in the competition and now doesn’t get stuck having to sing that awful song as his first release. Daughtry hasn’t looked back and neither will Adam. So with that, I believe in my heart that the reason that Kris’ win was so shocking and unbelievable, is because everyone (including him) knew it was not possible for him to win…without some jerks who have managed to spoil a win for Adam, and the joy from Kris. They may have thought they were supporting Kris but what they in fact did was tarnish him forever. So sad.

This seems like rank cheating and fraud.

People are charged for AI voting with the understanding that the votes will be submitted and counted fairly.

Usually employees of the production are not allowed to vote at all. AT&T should not even be in charge of counting the votes: it should be up to an independent accounting firm like with the Oscars. This would be true in the case of any competition or awarding of a prize, let alone where people are charged to vote.

The fact that they were bundling 10 votes by one person at a time makes it 10 times worse.

AT&T should be investigated for fraud. They collected all the voters’ money and then skewed the results through their unique access to and monopoly on the voting technology rights.

If Adam hadn’t murdered my favorite Sam Cooke song, I might’ve voted for him. It was a mournful song made to be sung with feeling..not to be screeched out like a dying cat. That wasn’t pleasant at all.

I so voted for Kris. Totally unashamed.

  11. Hieronymus Grexx says:

3 weeks later his first album will be in the 99 cent bin of your local car wash. No loss.

  12. Mebe says:

Chris Daughtry came in 4th (not second), just like Jennifer Hudson.

Anywho, both Adam & Kris will be fine.

  13. Erin says:

I was watching MSNBC today, and they covered this. Apparently, the reason AT&T was at the Kris Allen party is because they were invited by the organizers. Their point being that all it proves is that Kris Allen fans were more organized. However, I wouldn’t put it past AI to pick the winners regardless of how the public votes. How else can you explain Ruben Studdard?

  14. Magsy says:

Wow–you mean people really think the fans decide.

  15. mo says:

I really liked Adam’s powerful performances, but to me, Kris’ voice is better.
As I was watching their performance with Queen I couldn’t help think that while Adam seemed to fill up the stage with his presence, Kris’ timbre had some of that warmth that Freddie’s voice had. Sigh.. if only Kris had Adam’s attitude or Adam had Kris’ voice…

Nevertheless, it wouldn’t be fair if Kris won because of these, ahem, text voting parties.

  16. JackieSA says:

There was also something funny with the voting of our Idols here in South Africa and in the end they gave the top 2 first prize(s).

  17. Hieronymus Grexx says:

It’s called targeting your demographics people. You appeal to them just enough and add just the right amount of controversy to keep the audience watching the sponsors’ commercials. I maintain that audience voting has minimal actual impact on the end result but merely sets the grade curve the real judges can go by.

  18. frank says:

What is American Idol voters going to do about AT&T cheating and fixing the vote for KRIS TO WIN.tHERE WERE ALMOST 100 MILLION VOTES THAT CAME IN AND IF YOU ARE AS DISPLEASED ABOUT THIS AS I AM CALL AT&T AND AMERICAN IDOL and let them know how we feel about what they did. Then if you have AT&T service cell’s – internet or what, find another provider and lets hurt there profit for being low life cheaters.

  19. Lia says:

Lambert sounded, most of the time, like a 2-pound chicken trying to lay a 3-pound egg. The screeching was too much to stand. The right person won.

  20. laila says:

either way, with at&ts help or not kris wouldve won, people get over it
