So Hannity “argued that his viewers can parse editorial from fact” unfortunately a lot of them can’t.

A channel like Fox News wouldn’t be allowed to broadcast in the UK, as it breaks broadcasting standards: it presents opinions as fact.

“So Hannity “argued that his viewers can parse editorial from fact” unfortunately a lot of them can’t.”

      Example #1: Donald Trump

    • dodgy says:

@Becky In light of the BBC being the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation I can’t even say that anymore!

    • lyla says:

yeah in a lot of countries, fox news is classified as entertainment, not news. wish it was like that here.

  2. Jenns says:

Hannity is throwing fit on Twitter about this.

    • Becky says:

Because the criticism has hit a nerve, Koppel is right.

    • addie says:

The look on Hannity’s face was one of shock and embarrassment. Here was an icon of US broadcasting telling this piece of shit that he was just that. Blunt, truthful, no dressing it up. Watching Hannity trying to keep it together as he was reeling from Koppel’s bald assessment was priceless. Funny thing is that from now on, Hannity will be remembered through Koppel’s phrase. It will be in his obituary. Isn’t karma a bitch?

KOPPEL FOR PRES 2020. Seriously though, I have mad respect for the man for calling out Hannity. Fox News and Breitbart disgust me with their “alternative facts” and lack of journalistic integrity.

  4. M4lificent says:

Hannity and his ilk and the whole broader conspiracy movements feed off of blatant insanity.

I live one town over from Littleton, Colorado, where the Columbine Shootings occurred. I was in a hardware store in Littleton yesterday, and happened to be down the aisle from three guys who had apparently started an impromptu conversation.

One of the guys was spouting the usual government/Psy Ops conspiracy theories: Columbine was faked, Sandy Hook was faked. All of the mass shooted are faked. The teacher who was killed at Columbine is alive and well and living an hour away in Colorado Springs. Any time there is a person involved in an incident with a name that ends in “man” or “son” — it’s code for Psy Ops trickery.

At the time of the shootings, I worked two floors away in the same building from Dylan Klebold’s mother. While I never met her, I know numerous people who personally know her and that the acts her son committed were not faked. So, general sanity aside, I’m visibly shaking my head and rolling my eyes.

Then one of the guys that this conspiracy theory notjub was talking to said that he had been a FIRST RESPONDER at Columbine — that he had helped ferry children to safety and treat the injured. He said that he could personally attest to the fact that the injuries and deaths were not faked.

And no surprise — without skipping a beat — Conspiracy Guy told him that Columbine was still completely fake!

    • LittlestRoman says:

Oh, those conspiracy types drive me up the wall! It’s one thing to wonder ‘what if’ and do thought experiments, but to actually believe that Alex Jones, frothing-at-the-mouth nonsense?

I’m sure they have some mind-bending explanation, but I always wonder: why/how do they think these supposed hundreds/thousands of ‘planted witnesses’ and their families are staying quiet (about Columbine, for example)? They seem to be very poor judges of human nature if they think any force on earth (money, fear, etc.) would actually keep hundreds/thousands of people quiet about something that explosive for nearly 20 years.

    • vaultdweller101 says:

That’s insane. That’s also a great example of the good chunk of the voting Republican base, I think.

I do have to ask — what motive would anyone have in faking mass school shootings? I know someone who staunchly believes that Sandy Hook was made up, and he maintains that the government wants us “scared, gunless and unable to defend ourselves”.

Which, I mean, okay. if anyone, at this point, thinks that their hunting rifles and handguns and part-time militia/man cave club is going to stand up to the entirety of the United States Army… Delusional City, population everyone who thinks like that.

      • mayamae says:

They’re all gun nuts. They say the fake shootings are so the government can take their guns.

    • jerkface says:

Live in the same state as Sandy Hook. It was not faked. There were children and adults here on this earth. People knew them. People loved them. People identified their bodies at the morgue. And the dead were never seen again. They are missed. Their absence is noticed. Their families carry the pain around them everyday, everyplace they go. It was real.

  5. nicole says:

Good for you Ted for standing up to that bully.

  6. robyn says:

STANDING OVATION FOR TED KOPPEL. I love this man!!!!

  7. LinaLamont says:

    Yes to Ted.
    Don’t forget Dan Rather.

  8. Holly hobby says:

Yes good for you Ted! I miss Kopel, Jennings Rather and Brokaw. Those are really newsmen. Not this big Baby Orangino surrogate. Cronkite is probably spinning in his grave.

  9. B n A fn says:

You tell him Ted. Hannity: “You think I’m bad for America?”, Ted : “yah”. And let me finish, drop mike, boom!!

  10. Lucy2 says:

    Go Ted!
now I see why no one calls Sean Hannity, he never lets anyone get a word in edge wise.

    • Rice says:

You noticed that too, right? Hannity has absolutely no respect for Mr. Koppel because is incapable of showing any respect. Hannity isn’t a journalist like Mr. Koppel and of that ilk, and will never be.

  11. kimbers says:

Hannity isnt a journalist he’s a talkshow host personality. He’s not about news he’s about “giving the public what they want” a borderline maury for people who believe sensationalized unfounded drama is news. He’s good at what he does by getting people to think his arguments (no matter how twisted and turned) are reasonable.

  12. Prairiegirl says:

    We are all Ted Koppel.

  13. Sasha says:

Love you, Mr. Koppel. If only we had more men like you speaking the truth.
Guarantee Sean Hannity will be more involved with his guest list, in the future.

  14. Ladiabla says:

Yes go TED. That just made me think back to what Jon Stewart wrote in America: the book. “Inside that gigantic head lurks one of the most agile minds in TV journalism. His high standards and unquestioned professionalism are the reasons he is only allowed on television very late at night. Do not dissemble, for he can cloud your mind and haunt your dreams. Also, he is a shapeshifter.” Lol I still love that book.

  15. Penfold says:

Man, nothing good is going to come from the cash me outside girl getting a reality show and making millions.

    I can’t believe she’s only 13. She’s headed for trouble 🙁

  16. Lama Bean says:

Ted Koppel telling both Hannity and Bill O’Reilly they are terrible for people made my day yesterday.

  17. Anare says:

Hannity doing the typical schoolyard bully trick of just running his mouth so Koppel would give up. Sounds like a cartoon moron. Go Ted!

  18. Betsy says:

Go Ted! Fox News and its ilk are one of the worst things ever to happen to our nation. We have people who cannot tell fact from fiction and Fox exploits that! So now will have a segment of the population that has been effectively propagandized. People believing Russia has our best interests in mind (Republicans believing that! Holy crap, it’s like hearing them say Reagan was a loser!).
