Amal Clooney in vintage Dior & Balmain in London: stunning or too clash-y?

Pregnant Amal Alamuddin At The Chatham Hotel In London

While George Clooney was in Las Vegas for CinemaCon, his pregnant wife was in London, doing lawyer stuff. These are photos of Amal Clooney going into the Chatham House on Wednesday. She was there to give a speech about the Yazidi community in Iraq, and how ISIS (or ISIL) is responsible for acts of genocide against the Yazidis.

For this professional outing, Amal chose a vintage ensemble. One of her favorite places to shop seems to be William Vintage, and over the past few years, she’s been seen in lots of vintage ‘60s and ‘70s designer pieces from the shop’s curated collection. My guess is that she has the vintage pieces altered, especially nowadays when her pregnancy means she needs more room in the belly and bust of her beloved ‘60s-style dresses. William Vintage tweeted out: “We love Amal Clooney mixing 70s Dior and 60s Balmain from William Vintage….chic, vintage and sustainable fashion is always the best.” Which is which? I think the coat is Dior and the dress is Balmain?

Incidentally, I’ve seen some think-pieces about how people need to stop focusing on Amal’s fashion, and that we need to stop referring to her as “George Clooney’s pregnant wife,” because feminism. I tend to ignore all of those think-pieces because A) she IS George Clooney’s pregnant wife and he spent a lot of time and money selling Amal as his Most Perfect Unicorn, so this is what happens; B) because we can talk about clothes, hair, makeup, shoes and babies and we can also care about genocide and terrorism; and C) come on, Amal loves it when we talk about her clothes. She’s spending thousands of dollars a month just on clothes. We can talk about it.

My favorite part of this ensemble? Her leather bag. It’s gorgeous. My least favorite part of the ensemble? The shoes. I feel like the color of the orange-y flowers clashes with the red of her dress, and it’s driving me crazy a little bit.

I like this dress and red suits her!

    • AreYouForReal? says:

I love all of it, including the shoes. But too high for my taste, but I was soooo clumsy when i was pregnant.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yeah, she looks GREAT in red! But the shoes look too clashy to me. I want the bag. Maybe she would give it to me if I take back the part about her shoes.

I love those shoes with that dress, Amal.

      And I love YOU, Amal.

      Could I have your bag?

      Amal?

      • Megan says:

@Lah You are going to have to fight me for that bag.

      • KiddVicious says:

The shoes match the bag. You’ll have to take both, the shoes and the bag. But first you’ll have to wrestle them out of my grubby paws.

        I love the whole outfit.

      • teacakes says:

I’ll gladly fight a cage match for that bag. Last one standing wins!

Her style isn’t always my cup of tea, but she does have a certain aesthetic going on.

    • Miko says:

Nothing but the best for her, she looks great pregnant.

      Props to her.

  2. Jb says:

I, on the other hand, love the shoes and see the bag as too stiff and blah. She doesn’t look very pregnant given twins and how far along she is…

  3. SusanneToo says:

Everything but the shoes, Yes! But I collect vintage, also, and I have an outfit from the 60’s that the shoes would be perfect for. Are they 7 1/2?

  4. Sarah says:

I like the shoes – but not with that dress.

  5. detritus says:

Switch the shoes, and the outfit is perfect. id love an animal print shoe with this, but I dont remember Amal wearing that ever.

And maybe change the bag from burnt orange? I dunno, I can’t decide if that’s the part that makes the outfit.

Amal wants us to talk about her clothing, she LOVES clothing, which I love because it gives us great outfits to discuss. She dresses at the price point of awaits, but so so much creatively. She also definitely wants to be known as a Clooney’s wife. That’s why she’s Amal Clooney, isn’t it?

    • Megan says:

That coat is fabulous. She really does know how to work vintage pieces.

    • Kitten says:

Animal print shoes would be cute and maybe better. I usually hate flowery or Monet-inspired patterns but I don’t mind the shoes here. I don’t LOVE them, but they’re fine. Love the bag.

Can we talk about her hair? How does she always have so much volume?

      • detritus says:

        It’s pretty unfair, isn’t it?
I have a hunch she has a bit of natural curl or wave, so her blowouts take advantage of that little bit of extra lift. But the effort… she must wash and dry her hair daily. I kind of admire that dedication, and hell it’s paid off well. I’ve never seen her hair look less than jealously worthy.

pet theory – she has a paid hair stylist on staff

  6. laulau says:

Love good vintage. My goal is to one day have a YSL le smoking…
She looks fantastic and her hair has never looked better (note: I have no idea how other women spot extensions, etc.)
I think it’s fine to see her as a fashionista, it’s one part of who she is.

    • Megan says:

@laulau YSL le smoking is the most glorious line of clothes ever made. If I had the figure for it, I’d sell my car to buy a velvet pantsuit.

  7. Maria says:

i loved George Clooney’s comment that she would not let him name the kids ‘casa’ and ‘amigos’.

At least he is selfaware of his constant promotion…..

  8. Jayna says:

I think the issue was about magazines like Time or respectable newspapers were focusing on the fashion first.

This is a snarky celebrity site that covers that type of thing, fashion, but also covers politics, humanitarian causes by celebs.

Time Mag was rightly called out by their title heading on Amal.

  9. Lightpurple says:

This is one of her better professional looks. I like every single piece. I need to see the dress without the coat to rule on the shoes.

    • lisa says:

Yes,it’s one of her best professional looks. I must say I’m enjoying her taste more and more.

  10. Meow says:

She is so beautiful and her self-possession is admirable.

  11. littlemissnaughty says:

I love everything about this outfit and her style in general. She’s professional, stylish, and quirky at the same time. That’s hard to do. And I have major hair envy. My hair is good but a blowout like that? I can’t do it, that needs a professional hand.

  12. Daisy says:

    Her hair is magnificent.

  13. Janetdr says:

I think the colors flow well.

  14. Syko says:

What exactly is she doing with her feet in the top picture?

  15. .d. says:

i think there’s a difference between how celebitchy covers Amal. And how TIME magazine covers Amal. You expect the fluff on a celebrity gossip website, but a respected magazine like TIME just refering to her as Clooney’s wife is condecending.

    • Chinoiserie says:

Well that is her claim to fame, she would not be in TIME otherwise. You need to inform the readers why they should care.

    • Lila says:

I agree with you .D. I also think referring to her as Clooney’s wife when she’s his date on a Hollywood red carpet is one thing but using that like it’s her name when she’s doing her job is another thing entirely.

I don’t understand why this site seems to think everything she does is about us. I changed my name when I got married and it wasn’t to be his wife. I’m my husband’s wife regardless. I did it because I wanted our family to share a name. My preference, my choice. So why are we assuming she must have been fame whoring to do the same? Or fame whoring because she loves fashion and doesn’t pretend otherwise?

Option B above is the obvious answer to all of this so I don’t understand why it seems to only be allowed to apply to the gossipers. It’s not a moral shame to enjoy fame and attention, especially if it’s just a pleasurable bi-product of your real life.

  16. Guest says:

I love everything she has on including the shoes! I do like her fashion taste must of the time. She has such beautiful hair, It’s her best feature, I think.

She has wicked bunions, especially the left foot.

  17. midigo says:

the coat is Balmain. I love it.

  18. Margo S. says:

I’m really liking amal more and more. It’s so great that they found each other. You can totally tell that they are equals in the relationship. Congrats to them. She looks great!

    • Tulip Garden says:

I was pretty “blah, whatever” when they married but I am beginning to like her more and more. She is continuing her work, dresses far better than before Clooney, and seems incredibly self-possessed. I am rapidly becoming a fan.

  19. robyn says:

She dresses creatively and I do believe she shops vintage and has fun throwing it all together. Looks like she can walk and chew gum at the same time in that she plays with fashion while at the same time gets involved in some serious world affairs. I think style is a hobby with her and helps her relax while doing the important stuff.

  20. Stella says:

Love all of it. The shoes arent quite the best match but she must be feeling spring-y. Floral accessories are huge in the fashion mags.

    • minx says:

That’s what I was going to say. Maybe she got dressed and thought, it’s spring, she likes the shoes, why not? Just a cheerful touch to the outfit.

  21. Freddy Spaghetti says:

She looks amazing! I can’t believe she is pregnant with twins…

  22. perplexed says:

In one of those photos where her hand is near her hair, she looks like she’s striking a Kate Middleton pose.

  23. NOLA says:

I really wish Kate Middleton would take some style tips from Amal. She looks gorgeous, elegant, confident, and poised.

  24. Alessia says:

If only she learned how to walk or even set steps. Besides, did I understand well that she’s due in July? Surely doesn’t bump look like it

  25. Cupcake says:

I would love to see some bump accentuating, well-tailored selections in the appropriate setting soon!

  26. KBeth says:

She looks pretty…I love that jacket.

  27. QQ says:

She looks impeccable to me, the length, the coat.. just amazing

  28. Susan says:

“Guys, did you get your pictures? No, I can do more if you want. Just let me know.”

Ugh, for a woman not in the entertainment industry, this woman craves the camera.

    • Meow says:

So? She’s gorgeous, let her give the paps what they want.

    • Anitas says:

I don’t know, she always looks coy to me. Even in these photos, chin down, eyes up, seems a bit girlish and shy. It’s hard to imagine her being a lioness in the courtroom just from looking at the photos. But she’s certainly accomplished as a professional, so I guess pap photos can be misleading.

  29. what's inside says:

She sure hides pregnancy well. Is she tall?

  30. Sage says:

Um, I love all the pieces but not the way she put it together. Red looks great on her, but I don’t like the floral sling backs with the red dress and camel coat. The bag just doesn’t go with the outfit, is the color orange?

  31. Jessica Edobor says:

I notice that everybody who commented on amal said she was beautiful and although im not disagreeing i just feel like societys definition of beauty is tainted i see a woman who looks way to skinny especially considering the fact that shes expecting twins and before you scrutinize my for this comment i know that everybodys body is different during pregnancies but when your pregnant with twins your body changes considerably. The point im trying to make is that i dont understand how being too skinning is deamed beautiful. Because honestly i see a woman who obviously looks underweight.i mean for christ sake look at beyonce shes pregnant with twins and she has more curves then amal and she actually looks healthy. We as a society need to change our definition of beauty for the sake of our future generations because if we dont the rate of children, teens and adults who are living with anorexia and depression will continue to increase.

    • Kitten says:

Right, but people on this site comment on AC’s weight ALL the time and usually not in a flattering way–they criticize her for being too thin. I think that generally speaking, pregnant women’s bodies should be off-limits to criticisms. To me, it’s just poor form to critique a woman who is carrying a tiny human in her.

…and beauty isn’t just about size/weight. Amal looks beautiful because she looks happy and has that *pregnancy glow* not to mention a killer outfit and impeccable hair and makeup.

Personally, I’d love to have ONE Amal post without her weight being brought up.
No offense intended, just my two cents.

      • Jayna says:

Spot on, Kitten. And when people are saying Amal looks beautiful, well, she does in these photos. She has what I call a striking face with great hair, and the photos are of her in a great ensemble, which is what we are all commenting on. And I agree with you on her makeup. It’s very flattering. I always say I love her coats and sweater coats. I have coat envy when she wears coats. I usually love all of them. The color of the coat is great pared with her vibrant color of the dress.

And I didn’t get @Jessica comparing her to Beyonce. Beyonce is always touted for her stunning beauty and body. And Beyonce looks amazing pregnant and it has been talked about.. But all pregnancies are different. And all people come in different heights, shapes, and sizes. I think Amal has looked, like you said, glowing this pregnancy.

Also, for those commenting on Amal posing for the camera,I have called Amal thirsty for the camera sometimes. But in this instance, I don’t think we realize how fast she is out of the car and inside. It’s not like she’s taking time for poses for the camera. She’s going into the building passing lots of press clicking away close to her calling her name, and when watching in video form, she acts normally, smiles, not preening. It’s literally seconds from car to entering the building.

Regarding her leg or foot turning. I think from another video I saw that it appeared her heel turned out of her slingback shoe and it through her out of whack for a second when walking.

Video of Amal from the car going into Chatham House.

      • Jayna says:

        “threw,” not “through.” LOL

    • detritus says:

I think I know what you mean Jennifer, it’s something i’ve had a hard time articulating as well.

this cross section seems to come up in feminism, where there is a subset of women who fit into conventional attractiveness, or conventionally feminine interests, or conservative sexual or gender roles. it was discussed recently in one of the Emily Ratakowski articles by kaiser perhaps.

It’s hard to compliment these women because they are playing into a broken system and winning. At the same time, they are making their own choices and denying their agency in that is, in itself anti-woman.

I’m not sure myself of where I stand on this issue. I do think that a pregnant lady’s body is off limits, but I understand the concern, if it is at a population level, rather than the individual.

Amal the individual is beautiful, Amal as a symbol of the system that prioritizes and privileges women who are thin, conventionally attractive, and spend money and time on their physical appearances is concerning. But, Amal isn’t a symbol. She is a person. Who does not deserve to be criticised for the body she has. Very tricky indeed.

  32. Jaysgal says:

Does anyone know the designer of that bag? It probably costs the equivalent of a year’s salary and I’m not in the market for one, but I’m still curious.

  33. Jayna says:

New cute red carpet interview this week with George with Natalie Morales. They discuss Amal’s pregnancy and getting ready for the children. I didn’t know his dad met Amal the same day George did at an event. Also, it was commented on in the red carpet interview by Julianne Moore that Nick Clooney years ago said George would marry and have kids.

  34. Rae says:

    I love this outfit.

I find her fashion choices hit or miss, but on this occasion she gets the thumbs up!

  35. Kat says:

Amal is beautiful..gorgeous hair, skin, eyes, etc. However, I do not believe she is carrying twins. Aren’t they due in June? Given how slight her frame is, she would look VERY different if she was carrying…your body just demands it! That’s said, I don’t believe she is pregnant…..I think a surrogate is.

    • Achoo! says:

No puffy face, no puffy ankles, 5inch heels, not much of a bump and twins due in 3months, it’s all just a bit peculiar to me.

  36. Flaming says:

I agree with Kaiser’s comments on why we can talk about Amal’s fashion. It’s clear she’s a massive clothes horse and loves her fashion choices being talked about. She wore those same shoes at that human rights or refugee summit where she was wearing that reddish pink suit and where Brange in happier days also turned up. Let’s help the refugees/war victims but only in designer gear, thanks.

  37. raincoaster says:

But come on, “doing lawyer stuff” you call it. “She was there to give a speech about the Yazidi community in Iraq, and how ISIS (or ISIL) is responsible for acts of genocide against the Yazidis.” Come on, “lawyer stuff” really?

With you on the shoes, though. They’re twee and girlish and the overall look is crisp professional with vintage flair. Those shoes belong on Kristin Chenowyth at some Hollywood luncheon.

  38. Needlehole says:

    I think she looks fantastic.

  39. L.B says:

I have carried twin boys and I am a slim woman of average height. I put on 40lbs which is what it recommended. My belly got so huge it was insane! Especially given my small frame. By 6 months I absolutely looked full term. I am now pregnant with a single due in June as well.. And I just cannot see how she is carrying twins..? If she truly is.. That’s just amazing. Perhaps her outfits are tailored just so.. I just can’t wrap my head around it when I see pictures of her! If you google full term twin bumps you’ll see what I’m getting at. Even real tall women stick out quite a bit by 3rd tri. Beyoncé looks like she’s expecting twins. Big bump.

  40. loislane says:

She wore those shoes in 2014 at Angelina Jolie london global summit.
    Great hair.

  41. Janal says:

Am I the only only one that misleads her name as Anal?

  42. Sasha says:

    This woman is not pregnant.
