Michael J. Fox covers AARP Magazine: ‘I can’t stop laughing at my own symptoms’

Michael J. Fox covers AARP Magazine, which kind of blows my mind. He’s old enough to cover AARP and that reminds me to save more for retirement. Fox is 55 now and he’s been the public face of Parkinson’s since he went public with his diagnosis in 1998. He also has his own nonprofit, the The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which funds Parkinson’s research. In his interview with AARP he talks about Parkinson’s and I came away feeling like I understood the condition a bit more. He said that he finds his limitations funny and told a story about how he doesn’t realize he has symptoms until after he’s feeling the consequences of them. He also talked about feeling overwhelmed while meeting Muhammad Ali, who passed away last year at 74, and how people look at him (Michael) with “dread.” It was a good interview.

He’s still surprised by his symptoms
“The truth is that on most days, there comes a point where I literally can’t stop laughing at my own symptoms.

“Just the other morning I come into the kitchen. I pour a cup – a little trouble there. Then I put both hands around the cup. She’s watching. ‘Can I get that for you, dear?’ ‘Nah, I got it!’

“Then I begin this trek across the kitchen. It starts off bad. Only gets worse. Hot java’s sloshing onto my hands, onto the floor.”

He only has pain in his feet
“The only real pain I get is in my feet, which sometimes shuffle and curl up in cramps when I’m sleeping.

“Which is why I keep a very stiff pair of shoes on the floor next to my bed.”

On how people look at him with dread
“It was easy for me to tune in to the way other people were looking into my eyes and seeing their own fear reflected back.

“I’d assure them that ‘I’m doing great’ – because I was.

“After a while, the disconnect between the way I felt and the dread people were projecting just seemed, you know, funny.

He was overwhelmed meeting Muhammad Ali
“In this raspy, paper-thin voice, he said, ‘Aahhhhh … Michael, now that you’re in it, we’ll win this fight.’

“What could I say? Sitting there alone listening to Muhammad Ali, this giant – I was welling up, almost openly weeping.”

I have someone close to me with Parkinson’s and he tries to do things that seem unsafe for him like climb ladders or help you carry luggage up the stairs. Hearing Fox explain it like that, like it’s hard to realize that you can’t do something until you try it, helps me understand it a little. I have no idea what that’s like and from the outside it can make you frustrated on the other person’s behalf. It also must help to have a sense of humor about it. As The Daily Mail points out, Fox has been married to Tracy Pollan, 56, since 1988 and they have four children together: son Sam, 27, twin daughters Aquinnah and Schuyler, 22, and daughter EsmΓ©, 15. It sounds like he’s doing well and we just saw him present at The Oscars. He was also on The Good Wife up until it wrapped last year.

meeee toooo! Since Family Ties. he’s awesome, such a comedic talent, too.

    • Rhiley says:

I do too. He was a little old for me to crush on during the 80s. My first fan girl crush was River Phoenix, but Michael still made the covers of Bop, Teen Beat, 16 when I started begging my mom to buy me those magazines when we would go grocery shopping. I always read his articles, though, and he had the best attitude. In one article that I read as an adult, he talked about a period in which he struggled with alcohol and his wife helped him with that. But again, he is always so confident and positive. He has the best attitude in town.

I love him too. Marty Mcfly has always been my favorite character in a movie. He’s still a cutie

We just showed our kids the back to the future movies. He was so good in them and I forgot how much I loved them! I’m glad he’s doing well.

Love him so much. I also have someone close to me with Parkinson’s and Fox has been such an inspiration. May he and all of us win this fight!

I hope he is on The Good Fight too….love that show.

  5. Angel says:

Parkinson’s is heartbreaking, my MIL passed away from complications due to it. πŸ™ Good on him for being so positive about it and bringing awareness to this very terrible disease.

  6. It'sJustBlanche says:

Whatever Tracy Pollen is doing to look that young she should keep doing it.

  7. Lucy says:

Michael and Mark Hamill will rule the world.

  8. Wren33 says:

My mom has had Parkinson’s for over a decade. It is tough watching her decline. She has coped really well because she does push herself, but she also falls several times a day because she won’t use her walker.

  9. Beth says:

The things he does for this situation and how he’s handling it are awesome. So great he has a happy family. He’s always been one of my biggest Hollywood crushes

  10. greenmonster says:

Marty McFly has a son who is almost 30?

    I adore MJF. That’s all.

  11. Anon says:

Married since 1988? Good for him! We usually only hear about Tom Hanks having an enduring Hollywood marriage. Nice to hear he and Rita Wilson aren’t the only ones.

    • Lisa says:

Have you seen the Tonight Show interview with him just after he got married? He’s so cute. I’d love to be married to him, haha. He seems like he has a truly sweet heart.

  12. L says:

    😍😍😍😍 Michael J. Fox. 😍😍😍😍

  13. Betsy says:

My grandfather died with Parkinson’s. Terrible disease.

If these two ever divorce, I think I would be legitimately sad, like as if a family member got a divorce. I guess that’s what happens when you’re beloved and around for decades!

  14. Lisa says:

I love him and read this in his voice.

  15. canadiangirlgirl says:

    πŸ’œπŸ’œ him

    Love her
And LOVE that they are still married. I was 11 or 12 when they got married after she was on Family Ties. And I just LOVE that they are still together!

    Fwiw no joke
Secret of my success is one of my favorite 80s movies! My husband and I were just discussing the other day how many amazing projects he had in the 80s and early 90s. Consummate professional. Prolific performer. Amazing guy.

As an aside I also love Courtney Cox and loved her on Family Ties!!! She was a huge part of the success of Friends in that first season. She was at the time the biggest star.
