Alec Baldwin got sober when he was 27: ‘that was a tough time’

Just yesterday my kid and I were trying to decide if we were desperate enough to see Boss Baby (we weren’t, but a lot of other people were). He saw the trailer and asked if that was Alec Baldwin, whom he knows from SNL. I said it was and then remembered that Alec, who now is the lead voice in a kid’s movie, once chewed his 12 year-old daughter out in a voicemail message. I showed my kid the Dora the Explorer remix of Alec’s message and he thought it was hilarious. My point is that if you told me Alec hasn’t had a drink for over 30 years I wouldn’t believe you. He’s allegedly been sober since 1985 though. Alec told his story to George Stephanopoulos of ABC News:

What if you hadn’t stopped drinking in February, 1985?
I think that I was one of the people who was lucky that it stuck. Therefore therif I didn’t get it then I would have gotten it eventually. I know that at that time and what I described, overdosing on drugs, which I kept private for years, I think that I would have gotten it eventually but I’m glad I got it when I did.

Not many people get sober when they’re young. I got sober when I was about to turn 27. Those two years that I lived in that white hot period as a daily drug abuser, as a daily drinker to my misery, that was a tough time. There was really a lot of pain in there.

[From ABC News]

Good for him for getting sober and sticking with it if that’s what he did. I’m still questioning whether he was sober that entire time, but I guess sober people can be rageaholics too, people in the throes of their addictions don’t have a monopoly on anger. Alec seems to be sharing this story now because he has a new memoir out this week, called Nevertheless. It sounds like he’s co-opting the women’s movement motto “Nevertheless, she persisted” doesn’t it? He has another interview with CBS News where he explains how he got into drugs when he first moved to LA in the 80s. He said “that’s the way it was back then, everyone was drinking and drugging.” It’s still that way, it just depends on the people you spend time with on a daily basis.

Also, Alec talked about his encounters with the paparazzi, he’s has several run-ins with them, and he said they were after “a picture of my wife and her fit little body running down the street.” He claimed that one photographer tripped and fell on top of a baby in a stroller in front of his building and that “if I decide to take the law into my own hands in some of those cases that’s just want I’ve got to do. I don’t really worry about it that much.” He’s assaulted paparazzi several times and he never hesitates to put people on blast and tell his side of the story. If a photographer fell on a baby in front of his building, don’t you think he would have told the press at the time?

He may be a dry drunk. Sober, but still filled with drunken rage.

      ITA.
and this would not be something to lie about since it could be easily (and probably very happily) disproven.

    • Barrett says:

On cbs Sunday morning show he talked ab how now he puts his family first before career and he’s lucky such a young woman married him. He was snuggling w his son on camera.
Meanwhile Ireland Baldwin put out an instagram w her struggle w her body image. It’s nice that an old geezer like him gets a2nd chance at family but he left a kid in the wake!!!

  2. Digital Unicorn (aKa Betti) says:

The Baldwin brothers have always been douches thou he’s the one that has had the long career.

  3. Luca76 says:

He’s a textbook case of a dry drunk.

  4. Bridget says:

That book title had to have been sent and sent to the publisher a long time ago. Just a coincidence.

  5. Beth says:

My mom stopped drinking 23 years ago and is still more of a rageaholic than my dad who’s been and still is a drinking alcoholic for almost 50 years.

  6. Svea says:

Speaking of Dry, you know Trump’s brother and grandfather died of alcoholism? He’s never touched booze, but his entire behavior set indicates dry.

Blind items has a crazy bit of gossip, all about Alex and his brother thats hard to believe.
Evidently Alex’s kids were fathered by his brother (unbeknownst to Alex) and recently he had dna tests run and now behind closed doors, Hilaria living with brother and Chyna living with Alex,
    Bizarre if true!

Alcoholic behavior doesn’t end when you put down a drink. It can take a long time, if ever, to get better. I live in NYC, go to meetings, and have run into Alec. I can’t say for him, or anyone else for that matter, if he’s ever picked up again since the 80’s. But I can attest to the fact that he tries. Alec is a very bright fellow, and honestly, in person doesn’t seem like a bad guy in the slightest. Unfortunately, there’s a tendency to take people in the public eye and define them by their worst day. In all likelihood, we’re all better than that.

    • Dunne says:

Umm…I appreciate what you’re trying to do here, but the entire precedent of AA is anonymity. Even if somebody is talking about being sober, you should never discuss seeing them at meetings or your impressions of them there… “Whom you see here, what you hear here, when you leave here, let it stay here.”

      • Aida says:

Sorry, but perhaps you should read my post more carefully before criticizing. I said,

“I live in NYC, go to meetings, and have run into Alec.”

I DID NOT say WHERE it is that I’ve run into Alec. NYC is a big place. Lots of spots to “run into” someone in NYC.

However, thank you for your concern. I recently celebrated 32 years and promise you I’m well familiarized with the principles to which you refer.

    Creepy.

  10. Ashley Nate says:

He was sober during the “thoughtless little pig” rant?

    • Cupcake says:

Those were my thoughts exactly! I just assumed he was drunk/high when he called his young child a thoughtless little pig. He is a vile human being.

  11. mary watkins says:

He may have been sober since he was 27 but from what he’s describing he probably still goes through dry drunks every now and then.

  12. Bread and Circuses says:

The alcoholism may have been caused by trying to medicate the anger management issues, rather than the anger management issues resulting from the alcohol abuse.

I.e. The booze might be the effect rather than the cause. It wouldn’t surprise me if this is true for a lot of people.

  13. zxc says:

It cracks me up that all their kids are blonde with blue eyes. I guess that rumor about Hilaria lying about her spanish roots, dying her hair and changing her name from Hilary were true.
