John Cena proposed to Nikki Bella at Wrestlemaina: romantic or nah?

Nickelodeon's 2017 Kids' Choice Awards - Arrivals

There were rumors that The Rock would return for Wrestlemania 33, which was held in Orlando’s Camping World Stadium on Sunday night. There were no sightings of Dwayne Johnson, but there was a huge rock at the event, in the enormous engagement ring John Cena presented to his fiancée, fellow wrestler Nikki Bella (real name: Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace). The proposal could be the first real thing that has ever happened in a wrestling ring.

John, 39, and Nikki, 33, who have been together since 2012, wrestled (and won) a mixed tag team match against married wrasslers Miz and Maryse. After the victory, John got down on one knee and presented the huge, round cut diamond ring to Nikki, who of course said yes. The Daily Mail posted pics of the gorgeous ring, and I would have totally said yes too – at least to the ring.

Video of the proposal hit Twitter from a most unlikely, yet adorable, source, the couple’s French bulldog, Winston. Winston tweeted, “I couldn’t be happier my parents are engaded [sic].” Hey, the dog can use emojis, we can’t expect him to spell everything correctly too, right?

Nikki posted photos from the event to her Twitter, calling John her “Prince Charming” and adding, “Last night was truly unforgettable.”

The couple appeared on the TODAY Show on Monday, where John said, “I found the absolute right person, I found a strong person I consider an inspiration, an equal, somebody who when I’m feeling down picks me up. It took a person that strong to change my view on life.” Nikki said she was completely surprised about the engagement, stating, “I never actually would have thought that he would have proposed in front of all those people, but that’s home for us, WWE is our home, it’s where we met, it’s our passion, it’s our life. Honestly, I could not ask for it to be any other way.”

I’ve seen a lot of Wrestlemanias (thanks to my ex-husband), and I have to admit that this is the only moment that’s ever choked me up a little bit. Before he started performing outside of the ring, I really didn’t have an opinion on John Cena, but I really liked him in Trainwreck, and he gave it his all when he hosted Saturday Night Live. Despite the fact that he’s a spokesperson for Tapout clothes (which have replaced Ed Hardy as the go-to for “bro wear”), he seems like a good guy and I’m happy for him and Nikki. Congrats, you two.

That was very sweet. Much happiness to them.

  2. Sam says:

    Aww congrats to them.

The only thing I know about him is that he does a lot of work for the make a wish foundation. He is a good guy in my books.

  3. naomipaige says:

I have no doubt they love each other, but I think it was all just part of the show

    • Cherise says:

Yes they do love each but if anybody thinks that the idea for a wrestlemania proposal didnt come straight from Vince McMahons writers room, I have some magic beans to sell you. They’ve likely been engaged for months but under gag to unveil it at the biggest calender event.

    • Delta Juliet says:

It absolutely was part of the show. My husband told me it was going to happen at Wrestlemania at least 2 months ago.

  4. Goats on the Roof says:

John is a big supporter of Make a Wish, and he’s granted more than 500 last I checked. I have no opinion on his wrestling (or his proposal), but I consider him a treasure for that alone.

    • Lightpurple says:

He also has been active in Rise Against Hate, an anti-bullying campaign. My cousin attends Springfield College, Cena is an alum, and he says Cena gives back and is involved with the students.

  5. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

I cannot remember if she is the one who was begging him to marry her or was it her sister with her partner. If she was the one begging, then no, this is not romantic. The proposal would seem tainted to me. If you have to beg/pressure your significant other to marry you, you should not be with that person- especially if you believe in marriage and they don’t.

Also, the Undertaker retired this same night and that makes me a little sad. To be a tad dramatic, a small part of my childhood was put to bed. He and Paul Bearer (sp) scared the crap out of me when I was little. I loved him, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, the Rock, and a few others.

I requested this story in the comments yesterday, and I was hoping there would be more fans of Total Divas/Total Bellas watching. This is so just for the show/WWE. They’re just going to be engaged forever – John’s not gonna get married again and he’s def not gonna have kids, which is what Nikki wants

  6. Kelly says:

True story, years ago I was working in this dinky bar in Atlanta when some random dude came in and kept trying to set me up on a blind date with his son. He was waving his hand in front of his face and then finally said his son was John Cena. I laughed and told him if his son was really John cena then sure, tell him to stop in next time he was in Atlanta and I’d go out with him.

As he was leaving, one of my regulars walking in recognized him (big wrestling fan-I guess dad had been on tv before). Cena never showed up. I guess he objected to he dad trying to hook him up with random bartenders lol. Glad to see he found someone, they look like a good couple

  7. Meghan says:

I watched wrestling during the WCW/WWE Monday Night Wars and was obsessed, so I hated John Cena when I turned on wrestling after many years. But then I started watching Total Divas and grew to really like him. I think his first wife and divorce really screwed him up and he has just recently come around to actually marrying Nikki so good for them!

I just need to get my hands on Roman Reigns.

  8. Beth says:

Sweet, but they’ve been engaged before. She had decided she wasn’t ready and ended the engagement. This time, I hope she’s positive and didn’t say yes because they were in front of all those people. Good luck to them and I hope they last forever

    • Bridget says:

To someone else. It’s been a longstanding storyline on her reality show that he wasn’t interested in getting married again. They live together, though.

Wrestling facade and reality show storylines aside, they seem like decent, hard working people.

  9. Tituuu says:

Thank you Kardashians. This is what you have given us. Nothing will ever be private from this moment on – if you happen to attain some c list celeb status.

    Oh, it is pretty vile.

    • lizzie says:

Oh come on. People got engaged at huge public events long before the kardashians!

  10. Hannah says:

Hey now, Mankind jumping 40 feet off the steel cage was real!

  11. Sage says:

    He was hilarious in Trainwreck.

  12. QQ says:

I Came to ask if they weren’t either engaged or her whining about it on TV to him or some such on some overbearing fashion, but I see a few readers confirm I’m not crazy and making up a previous engagement situation

  13. Christin says:

Last week I saw a sweet news story about a little boy in TN with cerebral palsy who is a big Cena fan. They ended up meeting him for 30 minutes in a hallway after the event, and the video went viral.

Off to view it now…Oh, looks like he’s done a lot of meetings with sick kids.

  14. Char says:

I don’t recall them being engaged before? But I haven’t kept up with them since the 1st season of WWE Diva’s, where she talked about how John never wanted to get married again & I think she even considered breaking up with him or something because she did want to get married? &, if I recall correctly, it was a big ordeal with him even letting her move in with him. Then he bought her a car? Anyways, I don’t know if I believe this proposal was real, although I’ll believe they are actually engaged, just maybe he had already proposed & this was just for tv.

  15. Neo says:

I get that he’s a big guy who needs custom tailoring for his suits, but he definitely needs a calmer pattern (no pattern. Go with no pattern and a basic colouring) and a better fit around the chest. Just find the Rock’s tailor and throw money at the problem.

    • Dolkite says:

The Rock’s suits always look too small for him. Big guys look ridiculous in suits.

  16. ScrewStewRat19 says:

Congrats to them, but the real news here is that the Hardy Boys are back!! Jeff Hardy was my first major teenage crush. I just might have to start watching wrestling again!

  17. Erica_V says:

No lie – I cried!! Really really happy for them. When he called her Stephanie I legit screamed!

Also, I’m 99.99% certain they were engaged before Mania (about 2 months ago I think) and this is just the kayfabe end of their storyline with Miz & Maryse. After her surgery last year I was positive her career would be over it’s amazing the work level she’s put in to come back to have her Mania Moment.

Also, as I doubt this was his real proposal, I don’t think there is anything wrong with them keeping the real moment private between them. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it during the season finale of Total Bellas S2.

You Deserve It! ::Clap clap clapclapclap::

  18. AmunetMa'at says:

I’m happy for them. It was obvious something was going to happen because if the story line, byt what got me was when they were walking up the ramp afterwards and the mic caught her saying “I can’t believe you proposed.” With tears in her eyes. I think she didn’t believe he would do that at Wrestlemania.
