French Montana slammed for criticizing a black woman’s ‘nappy’ braids

Jennifer Lopez And Giuseppe Zanotti Celebrate Their New Shoe Collaboration

I don’t think I’ve ever really cared about French Montana? I learned his name – his stage name – when he dated Khloe Kardashian several years ago and when they broke up, I was sort of happy about it because I didn’t get them at all. Nowadays, French Montana is dating Iggy Azalea and… I don’t know, he’s probably still working in music, maybe. French Montana’s real name is Karim Kharbouch and he’s from Morocco. Racially speaking, no one considers him black, but beyond that… I feel uncomfortable trying to define his race or ethnicity. Some Moroccans don’t consider themselves to be ethnically Arab, but some do (and some are). I bring this up because French Montana is considered by many in the African-American community to be something of a culturally-appropriating douchebag, a culture-vulture of the highest order (much like his ex girlfriend Iggy, come to think of it). He’s the kind of guy who thinks he can call out an African-American woman for having “nappy” hair. Ooooo….

So, here’s what happened. Twitter user Chill Bill tweeted this yesterday:

If you go to her profile (which French Montana did), you can see that she’s a beautiful black woman. Well, French Montana searches his name for any mentions and he saw this tweet. So he tweeted to Chill Bill: “U musty crusty dusty rusty ass hoe With them nappy ass poetic justice braids” and then it got even worse but I won’t publish the whole thing. He finished off the tweet with “be humble” because… sure, why not?

So, that happened. And now French Montana is one of the top trends on Twitter because everyone is like “you have zero business taking sh-t about a black woman’s braids” and “you’re a culturally appropriating a–hole.”

Well, frack him, and now I’ll go back to comfortably living my life, having no idea who this dude is.

  2. Lucy says:

What do you expect from someone who dated a Kardashian? He’s taking a page from their playbook, play on and appropriate the aspects of black culture that get you rich and famous but don’t actually care about black people in general.

  3. Pandy says:

The twitter drags are the best, seriously!!!

    • AnnaKist says:

I especially love the one from Muna – it sums him up perfectly. He’s a twatty wanker, nothing more.

  4. QQ says:

I WILL F*CKING LIVE FOR THE DAY When some Crusty/unintelligent/trash ass/poorly named/Rangeless Man Wont have sh*t to say to a woman about herself , I just don’t understand where TF these remedial ass men get off telling women anything in snappy format, I wanna hear men talk to women about BC/Pregnancy/Periods/Sexual ability or process/ Their looks/rape/-rape/what to be man about NEVER THE F*CK AGAIN, Literally Nevebruary 67th, 2096 is the NEXT time I want a Man addressing anything about a woman much less their appearances… with his Sweaty looking French Riviera poor cousin, named ass… His GD Nerve… He can come for his mama

    • Nn says:

Well, there is this whole culture called hiphop that sort of promotes anti black woman hatred aka misogynoir. So yeah…not surprising to see this Arab man emulating black male rappers.

      • BKittyB says:

Nn: I get your point, but it comes dangerously close to you saying French Tickler’s foolishness is the fault of black men. I realize you may not be saying this, nor am I accusing of saying this, but let’s be real. This horse’s ass said what he said and there was not a black man holding a gun to his head to make him do it.

That being said, I would like to point out that someone being from Africa does not make them automatically prone to having “nappy” hair. Hair textures and skin textures vary throughout that continent, so I find it necessary to literally split hairs when we talk about this.

French Montana was always a nobody in hip hop. He is the same ilk as the gross KarASShians, ICKY Azalea and others who cannot seem to make a move they haven’t stolen from black people.

      • Nn says:

He is responsible for his own words and actions but let’s talk about why he would feel so comfortable saying those things about black women in the first place.
It’s nothing new. We hear it from black rappers all the time. This isnt the first time French has come for a black woman, hell even children aren’t spared. In 2014 he made fun of a black girl child’s hair. He also mocked lupus having Tichina arnold.
Would French Montana have said that about white women? Asian women? No of course not and everyone knows it.
Black Women are the most vulnerable women in america and around the world largely because we have no male protection.
By the way, where is #consciousKendrick and # wokebaeJesse? We have no one to defend us and people know that hence why it’s always us and not some other race of women getting verbally, and sometimes, physically abused.
So many black women have now stopped listening to rap music, vowed to never march for black men, white feminists, immigrants, Mexicans, lgbt etc and not lift a finger to support anyone except the middle one of course. Black Women are tired of being everyone’s punching bag and Democrats guard dog. It’s a bigger issue than French Montana.

    • INeedANap says:

I fully believe it is the lowliest men who cause the most ruckus about women. They know they provide nothing of value to anyone and this enrages them, so they need to beat on obvious targets and make them lower so they can feel higher.

There is nothing more infuriating to mediocre men than when they have the game stacked in their favor and still lose.

    • Scotchy says:

      High fives and hell yes!!!

I am so so so tired of it!! TIRED OF IT!
I don’t care who you are, what your ethnicity is, if you are male STOP TALKING ANY SORT OF ANYTHING ABOUT US FEMALES.
I watched the Louis C.K special and while the special on a whole was funny his first whole bit was about abortion and that whole opening bit just made me annoyed and tired, because if a female comic had gone off on that topic ,she would have been slammed, but he is a genius for his funny male perspective on female reproductive rights.

Maybe I am too sensitive, but I am just so tired of men freely addressing us, our rights, our appearances and capitalizing on it.
Arrgghhh.. this guy he needs to be pushed off a cliff.

      • Snowflake says:

Me too, girl. When I gain weight, I get comments from guys at work, like, oh, your eating that? Stupid stuff like that. They think they’re funny. Then I lost 15 pounds. This driver is like, oh you lost weight, don’t lose anymore, I can almost see through you sideways! I’m 5′-6, 173 right now. I just wanna say, who asked you? Then this one co_worker was checking out this girl and he goes, she needs to do some squats. He doesn’t have an ass, I wanted to say who the f are you to be talking about squats? You don’t have an ass. For the most part, I just ignore or give a death stare. But yes, why the heck do men think they can comment on a woman like that? When most of the men commenting are average, at best. I think I’m going to start speaking up and asking those questions of them. For reals

      • Asiyah says:

Exactly, Scotchy. I read that his mother is a Black North African. Ok so? Still inappropriate to refer to a woman’s “nappy” braids. It’s not his place and he needs to stay in his lane and shut up.

      • QQ says:

This Standing O im giving you.. in the office alone LOLOL MIND YOU Scotchy I had this rant with my bf and he was laughing cause he isn’t the type ( he is very very kind accommodating/deferential to my wishes, etc) but I was complaining about that cabinet pic with Mike Pence and I just Exploded, like F*CK YOUR FELLOW MEN FEELING ENTITLED TO TELL WOMEN SH*T ABOUT SH*T WHEN MOST MEN I KNOW AND HAVE HEARD OF AINT NOTHING BUT CRUSTY DRAWERS ENTITLEMENT AND TOILET SEATS UP.. He said: You arent Lying.. I Mean It I don’t even want a man to ask me if it’s warm in the office! IDGAF

      • antipodean says:

Hahahaha, QQ, another priceless preach from you, and I am front and centre for every word of it! What is it about their ridiculous plumbing that makes them think they are even half as worthy as any female you might care to choose out of a line up? Why do women need abortions? Because every baby starts with a prick, and then they can wave goodbye to the consequences if they choose. I am a mad chook lady today!
Now I’ve had my rant, I have to say QQ, your BF sounds like a real treasure/keeper, but then he is very fortunate to have the glorious YOU as a GF. I am pleased he seems to know and own that.

      • Kitten says:

“F*CK YOUR FELLOW MEN FEELING ENTITLED TO TELL WOMEN SH*T ABOUT SH*T WHEN MOST MEN I KNOW AND HAVE HEARD OF AINT NOTHING BUT CRUSTY DRAWERS ENTITLEMENT AND TOILET SEATS UP”

LMAO!!! Oh my god this is just too good. You need to compile a book of QQisms.

Agree with all of these comments above. Preach, ladies!

  5. Ashley Nate says:

Now his career will be flushed down like a turd a la his gf Iggy Azalea. They have something in common. Birds of a feather lol

  6. Nn says:

She is not a black woman. She is a young black girl, looks like a teen and for this adult man to attack a kid is just gross.

  7. Beth says:

If he doesn’t like it, he doesn’t have to look. Someone else’s hair isn’t any of his business.

  8. Dragonlady Sakura says:

F this dude! I’m so sick of black women getting attacked for just freaking breathing! If a woman wears her hair natural it’s ugly and dirty, if she straightens it, she wants to be white! Screw you!

  9. Anilehcim says:

He is disgusting. This has always been such a hot button issue, but this is largely hip hop’s fault. Misogyny and more importantly, MISOGYNOIR, are ingrained in hip hop. Your favorite rapper has written verses referring to women as bitches and hoes and much, much worse. This is standard procedure. French is a disgusting, pathetic excuse for a human being and now we see him apparently incapable of differentiating between “oh those are just lyrics, I don’t really mean that” (which is the LIE we have let pretty much every popular rapper hide behind) and actually showing the world how he really feels about women.

I don’t know if the point I’m trying to make is getting lost here because I’m running on little sleep and am having a tough time articulating my thoughts this morning… but the gist of my point is that this is what happens when everyone acts like it’s all good natured and OK to ignore that some of the nastiest and most hateful lyrics about women, especially black women, are regularly featured in hip hop. Too many women are all too ready to write it off as “he isn’t talking about me” and that’s bullshit. In the age of the women’s march, we need to do better. IDC who it is… if its a nobody like French Montana or most people’s favorite rapper, Jay Z, they need to be called onto the carpet. Chris Brown actually tried to kill Rihanna and beat the bloody hell out of her and he is still embraced and was even recently featured on a hit TV show that critics praise regularly. HOW?????

I’m happy to see there was backlash over this but I’ll be happier when the day comes that we respond to this type of NONSENSE by just completely ignoring that these pathetic, women-hating fools exist. We need to stop rewarding bad behavior.

    • BKittyB says:

I get your point, as another commenter made one similar. But the problem is that that is actually part of the culture. It is an ugly part of the culture, but it is artistic expression. Further, the whole culture cannot be defined by that, because there are also amazing parts of the culture that honor women and love, too. To say that the culture should be cleansed of this I don’t agree with. But I am also saying that the part of the culture is a small horrible one that is often blamed on these actions, when the action belongs to the individual.

      • Bridget says:

That doesn’t really make a ton of sense. Hip hop shouldn’t be held accountable for theway it, frequently as a genre, talks about women? It’s okay to degrade women because it’s a part of a “culture”? That’s some major BS there.

      • Nn says:

        Thanks Bridget.
It’s exhausting to have this conversation with hiphop fans.

    • Nn says:

      @Anilehcim

Thank you and well said! Couldn’t agree more.

  10. Tiffany27 says:

    Why is French Montana?

  11. Amy Tennant says:

This just makes me happier about the fact that every time I read his name I confuse him with French Stewart. Next!

  12. eggyweggs says:

So thin-skinned! Has he never had someone say something stank about him before? Seems as though he chose the wrong business. I won’t even get into his old, tired, boring, DATED insult, which he might have copied word-for-word from an “In Living Color” skit.

  13. Tiffany says:

He did this on Twitter. Does he not know the gauntlet that Black Twitter will throw down, no wait, he is a idiot. I answered my own question.

  14. Boxy Lady says:

I know this is slightly off-topic but can I just say that I have never been comfortable with the fact that the terms “African-American” and “black” are used so interchangeably? I mean, French Montana may or may not be black but since he’s from Morocco, he is definitely African.

    • testmilk says:

Just curious, are you black and a descendant of slaves in America?

If not, many people don’t know the simple history of why we call ourselves ‘African American,’ and reference a continent, not a country.

It’s because we don’t know where we are from on the continent. It was beat and bred out of us. Our country, our memories, our regions, our religions and any one of the thousands of languages we may have spoken.

I’m assuming this has not been French Montana’s experience, as you reference his country of origin- Morocco. It’s also not Charlize Theron’s experience, or Lupita Nyongo’s.

It’s specific to American descendants of slaves in America.

Those people can call themselves what they like. Just like i can call myself a ham sandwich or Tiger Woods can call himself Cablinasian.

It has zero to do with why the black descendants of slaves in America created and use the term ‘African American.’ THAT, is the only thing that matters.

      • Boxy Lady says:

I am black and descended from slaves but I have never embraced the term “African-American.” Honestly, I didn’t start hearing that used until I was in secondary school. Before that, I heard “black” or “Negro.” When I hear “African-American” I think of a person who is more directly connected to Africa, like an immigrant or a child or grandchild of an immigrant. Both sides of my family have been in the US since at least the mid 1800s so I don’t think of myself in that particular way. I just think of myself as a black American. I mean, not all blacks in the US are African-Americans and not all African-Americans are black. Anyone can identify themselves in whatever they feel appropriate, of course, but, for me, French Montana would fit the term “African-American” more than I would.

      • Anna says:

@Boxy Lady African American, while it may sound like it is descriptive of Africans in America, is a term that references African-descended peoples who are Americans from the United States. An African born in Africa would not refer to themselves as such but rather by their country or ethnic group of origin and also since “African American” specifically is Black American people.

      • Boxy Lady says:

Others may attach the term to me because of all the reasons you all are giving but I still don’t personally identify with it and I don’t use it to describe myself. And I know that I am not the only black person in America who feels and thinks this way. Sorry, not sorry.

      • Bridget says:

Did you seriously just try to explain to a black person the term “African American”?

      • Naughty corner says:

@boxy lady I could be wrong but your use of the word secondary school makes me think that you are in fact a descendent of African Slaves but more likely from a former Britsh colony I.e Africa or Caribbean
I am West Indian myself and do not use the term African American but I Respect the right of others to do so. It is in fact one of my pet peeves how people want to police what some black people in America chose to call themselves. Those who choose to identify as African Americans have every right to do so and whether you are also black. immigrant or otherwise they don’t need your approval
You on the other hand are also free to identify as you wish

  15. Littlestar says:

Well aren’t he and Iggy a match made in racist heaven, considering all the awful things she has said about Asians, Mexicans and black people. I’m sure they both love to hate on women of color (Iggy certainly does, considering her past comments on Mexican women’s bodies) and French Montana thinks he’s won the lottery because he has a white woman. Of course they do all this while making money off a black art form. Don’t give these fools money.

  16. Amanda DG says:

His “apology”, “My mother is african queen and I was married to a beautiful black queen
All I did was defend myself if I affended anybody I apologize”

He is disgusting. Not sorry at all and does not get why he’s in the wrong. Go. Away.
