Chrissy Teigen pays for a woman’s beauty school tuition

I know there are mixed feelings about Chrissy Teigen here. While a lot of people think the social media addict should rein it in a bit, she does use her celebrity for good once in a while. She lent her support to the girls who were kicked off a recent United flight for wearing leggings and, back in December, she gifted one of her Lip Sync Battle dresses to a fan. I never got those knee-high boots I put a good word in for yet, but I’m keeping hope alive.

Over the weekend, Chrissy committed a random act of kindness that was truly a life-changer. Mercedes Edney, an aspiring beautician/beauty blogger in Charlotte, North Carolina, set up a crowd funding page through YouCaring to raise the money she needed to become a licensed esthetician. Getting that license isn’t cheap, Mercedes was looking at $5,995 for tuition, books, and an enrollment fee. The only school she could attend, the Academy of Nail Technology & Esthetics, does not have financial aid, and Mercedes wasn’t eligible for any scholarships.

Mercedes raised a couple of hundred dollars from friends and family, but on Friday, was shocked to see a huge donation of $5,605 posted to her fundraising page from the 31-year-old model. Chrissy added the message, “I’ve seen this be your passion for such a long time now. So excited to see you fulfill your dream!” Mercedes took to Instagram to share the good news. Posting a photo of a receipt for the down payment for her schooling, she said,

Something absolutely amazing happened last night. Many of you know how much I love skin care and my plans to attend esthetician school next month. Last night I posted my tuition fundraiser on twitter and something I never in my wildest dreams happened. My paypal alert went off, and as I looked at my phone, there was amount of $5605. I thought it was a glitch. I then look at my email and realized it came from my fundraiser. @chrissyteigen donated my entire tuition money for school. I have been crying all night and I cried in the office this morning as I paid my downpayment for esthetician school. I haven't been this happy in a very long time. Thank you Chrissy and thank you to everyone else who voted or rtd my link or have supported me this entire time. It means more to me than you'll ever know. 💜💜 #ixorabb #futureesthetician

Mercedes, who plans to start her courses in May, tweeted Chrissy to thank her personally. Mrs. John Legend wrote back, telling her, “I’m really excited for you to live out your passion.”

It could be my personal recent run of bad luck (last week, I had to put my dog to sleep, get a new car because my Camaro died and was confined to bed with a wicked sinus infection), but this story really touched me. I think what Chrissy did was awesome. If that’s not enough, Chrissy also shared a family photo, commemorating her adorable daughter meeting the Easter Bunny. The proud mom went all out for Luna’s birthday, even making her a gorgeous cake, so I can only imagine her Easter basket is going to be nothing short of epic. I’m sure Chrissy won’t let us miss a thing.

Chrissy can be annoying, but she doesn’t take herself too seriously, which I like. Love this act of kindness.

    • doofus says:

ALL of this. she may be an oversharer and yes, sometimes a wee bit annoying, but she’s got a good heart and clearly cares about other people, even us “little” people.

    • Kristen820 says:

I heart her – She’s not always nice, but she seems very kind and generous. Plus her master’s degree in snark makes me laugh!

I’m sorry about your dog, Corey. I had to put my 7yo cat down last month, and there really aren’t any words to describe how much it sucks…

  2. Margo S. says:

Awww. Corey, I’m so sorry about your dog. That is awful. It will get easier!

  3. BooRadley says:

Didn’t really know who she was, I would read about her here but lip sync battle made me fall in love. She is authentic and kind. Maybe a little over the top but she seems like a really decent person. Good on her

  4. Clare says:

@corey – sorry about your dog – I don’t even know what to say. Sending you good vibes. x

  5. Pumpkin Pie says:

Corey, get a new dog, enjoy your new car – maybe driving the old car would have brought something bad on the road for you so the car breaking down was a proof of divine protection, and get well soon in case you are not well enough yet.

    Very nice of Chrissy. Really.

  6. Wilma says:

I really like her. She has some quirks like all of us, but she seems like a genuinely decent person and is able to make fun of herself (always a big plus in my book).

  7. mellie says:

What a nice thing to do, I wish I had some extra $$ so I could do little things like this…what a great feeling it would be. I’m sorry about your dog, we get so attached to our furry friends!

  8. littlemissnaughty says:

Corey, I’m so sorry about your dog and overall sh*tty time.

Chrissy is cute and this is so nice. This school is really not cheap. Who has that kind of money just lying around?

  9. Snowflake says:

That is so nice! Luna is so adorable, I just want to scoop her up and give her kisses! I like Chrissy

  10. Ninks says:

That was incredibly sweet. I’d love to have the money to do things like that.

  11. Veronica says:

Eh, I like Chrissy. She strikes me as somebody who means well, even if can be a little Extra sometimes. Generosity is something we take for granted too often.

  12. Insomniac says:

I’m sorry about your dog, Corey.

Sometimes Chrissy can annoy with her attention-seeking antics, but on the whole she seems like a decent person and this was a very cool thing to do.

  13. Shambles says:

    THAT BABY. AHHHHHHH.

Also, THAT is how you take an Easter photo. Mommy and daddy are both in sight, baby is safe on daddy’s lap. Baby feels safe. Baby is not alone on a strange bunny’s lap, screaming her head off. I’m baffled by all the moms posting Easter pics of their screaming children, saying “OMG isn’t this cute?!” No. It’s not. It makes me uncomfortable to see your child freaking out.

Sending good vibes to you Corey, I hope things get better and I know they will.

I love Chrissy and her family! John Legend was supposed to perform and be the keynote speaker at an event being held for my husband’s company but had to back out at the last minute. He sent us a video apologizing and promising to make it up to us. He was so sincere with his apology. They are definitely one of my favorite Hollywood couples. Little Luna is a doll!

  15. SusanneToo says:

I’m so sorry about your dog. It’s always heartbreaking. At some point, visit a shelter or rescue site and adopt a new buddy. There are so many needing homes and love. Good luck.

  16. Nicole says:

Chrissy Ian great to me. She speaks her mind and she cares. Can’t hate her for that

  17. Guest says:

At first, I was one of those people who found her annoying and couldn’t take much of her, but along the way something changed, I really like her and yes she doesn’t take herself too seriously!

  18. QQ says:

Ive followed the lady whose tuition she paid for a few years now she is so fun/positive/and knowledgeable of her shit and has a homemade skin care line I only hear great stuff about she is so bowled over and elated still that is hard not to smile reading her TL… I don’t give Chrissy much time as she seems so thirsty but I can also acknowledge she stands for the side of good generally, she is always about supporting good causes and such so… HURRAY!

  19. hkk says:

I love her silky robe thing in the easter bunny pic. #need

  20. Turtle says:

My condolences about your dog. Feel free, also, to wait awhile before finding a new one.
