Sheryl Crow has been flying under the radar for several years, right? I can’t remember the last time we talked about her. I can’t even remember the last time I really thought about her. No, that’s not true – a few months ago, I watched something about Lance Armstrong and I thought, “How weird is it that Armstrong and Sheryl Crow were together for years?” Anyway, Sheryl is still around and she’s got a new album, Be Myself, coming out in a few weeks. She did an interview to promote the new music, but of course she ended up talking about politics because no one can help themselves. It’s all we think about these days: Emperor Baby Fists and all of the bigly ways we’re going to die. Here are some quotes from the interview:
She started a Change.org petition to shorten the presidential election cycles: “I felt like it was becoming so hateful that I had to watch to make sure my kids didn’t pick up the remote and turn the TV on.”
On social media: “Now we have this forum for haters to come out and say the worst thing you could possibly say to someone without having the experience of the reaction. We’ve learned to be a society without empathy and without compassion.”
Her album is influenced by the crazy state of the world right now: “The whole album is very informed by the atmosphere, which is very chaotic, very vitriolic, a lot of fear that was really in the ether while we were making this record.”
Losing faith after Trump won the election: “I started losing faith and not only for our country, but for the people that voted for him.”
She wants people to compromise & find common ground: “You may not be an environmentalist and I might be, but at the end of the day, don’t we all want the same thing for our kids? We want a healthy future that is secure. And we have to figure out a way to communicate with reason and a modicum of decorum at least.”
It’s the “lost faith with Trump voters” part of the interview that has got people talking. I think she said it in a very matter-of-fact but not-harsh way. Maybe I’m feeling generous towards Sheryl because I also lost faith with half the country after the election. A few weeks before the election, I remember writing something on this blog about how I needed to know that my country had a majority of sane, rational people who could see through Donald Trump’s insanity, bigotry and misogyny. While the popular vote showed that we are in a majority, the electoral vote was another story and yes, I lost faith in many people. To be fair though – those people who voted for him still don’t understand what they did. So they never deserved any good faith whatsoever.

I’m surprised this comment got any reaction at all. It’s everyone I know, practically. It’s more than 50% of our country. What’s surprising?
Everything you teach your children not to be is how Trump behaves and people still voted for him. He toyed with Russia to win the election and Trump supporters, including the Republicans who protect him from showing his taxes, don’t seem to care. Democracy was breached, Trump lies constantly and still Trump supporters don’t care. There’s an ugly not-so-hidden agenda behind these Trump supporters. There’s no excuse for what they foisted on the world.
Democracy is no longer a spectator sport. It can slip away. People have to get away from the tv, get involved and fight for truth and for what’s right and decent in a modern world.

Just curious here though… how would you even interact/compromise with a Trump voter? Some Trump supporters (and Brexit supporters in UK) are totally unreasonable and often resort to insults.
If there is a way to make a reasonable discussion with them, pls do tell….
I agree with you. But it must be acknowledged that some on the far left are the same. How do you interact/compromise with for example the head of BLM in Ontario/Canada who called Treadeau a “white supremacist” (I’m from Canada) . He may have his problems but being a white supremacist is not one of them. How do you even begin to start to address that. It weakens the idea of what white supremacist actually is. What happens is that the far left frequently plans marches, sit ins, states outrageous comments like the one above and that really turns the average person off. People trying to get to work are angry about protesters blocking traffic etc. The majority of these average people don’t say much but it changes their perceptions and then they change their vote for a candidate that is more to the right.
Hello, I’m in Ontario and I agree that extremism hits both ends of the political spectrum. I know people who seem to find life under PM Trudeau somehow deeply oppressive … yet nothing has changed for them.
I agree……there are unreasonable people at the extremes of both sides of the two party aisle and unfortunately they make their team continuously look bad.

I was just coming on here to say that! The last time I saw her she looked a lot different. Whatever she as done, its tasteful and she doesn’t look like she’s trying to compete with 25 year olds, she looks great but age appropriate.
In that second pic she looks like Tory Burch and it always made me side eye Lance that he dated both. I think in succession if I’m correct.
And for the record she did a nice job of saying what we are all thinking without the cuss words and vitriol I usually incorporate into that conversation. Lol.

I think she is probably very disappointed in her Nashville industry friends. She has stuck with the country crowd here for years, because of course so many are lib in private. Even though Davidson County (where she lives in Nashville) voted majority Hillary, the industry and so many heavy-hitting country stars (Amy Grant and Vince Gill, for instance) refuse to speak out against the GOP or Tr*mp. And they can afford to by now, since many of them are already gazillionaires (looking at you, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill). She sounds over it, and I would not be surprised if she pulls up roots and moves back to California.
She also used to be (?) BFF’s with Kid Rock…I wonder how that friendship is doing now…

LOL @ Started… Nah Sheryl, that’s when I Finished The Business of Faith in people/America Deal… 2015 when they started the Unpunished by any kind of law, On Cam Snuff films is when I “Started” and when I poll around my friends we all pinpoint that about 2014-2015 for self radicalization / awareness… i’m still side eyeing people right and left openly on the streets cause a lot of ya’ll want cookies for trying to catch my eye in the supermarket with the sheepish “I didnt vote for him whisper puppy face” IM NOT HAVING IT
I never had overwhelmingly faith in this country but it was fully extinguished in 2014. And there’s no “compassion” when dealing with some of these people

I feel what she’s saying. I live in Trump country, and keep looking around thinking, “idiots.” It’s affected me a lot, having me secretly angry at people who never did anything to me personally and wouldn’t understand my anger. I started homeschooling my young son because he was having lots of trouble in school, and now I know I’m going to keep doing it because my gut reaction was, “I’m not sending him to school with these morons.” It sounds horrible, but my faith in this country and, specifically where we live, was profoundly shaken.
The Electoral Vote is the problem….. ALL votes across our country need to be counted! That’s why people are frustrated and say the system doesn’t work and voting doesn’t matter! It’s due to not all the people being heard.
