Orlando Bloom was ‘extremely surprised’ by his naked-paddleboarding photos

Film Independent Spirit Awards 2017

Orlando Bloom makes me sad these days. He’s been making me sad for years now. A decade ago – maybe longer? – Orlando was one of the biggest names around. He was the heartthrob, the crush, the good-looking British guy that every American girl wanted to date. But then there was a series of terrible career decisions and flops. Bloom just couldn’t make the transition from franchise-ensemble actor to leading man, or failing that, solid dramatic actor. Nothing really worked. The lowest point was probably Orlando getting into a fistfight with Justin Bieber at a nightclub. Ugh, that still makes me sad. Anyway, Orlando tried to rebound with a year-long relationship with Katy Perry, but they broke up a short time ago. And now Orlando is chatting with Elle UK and he’s pretending he’s still a major thing, I guess. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:

He’s very eager to talk about his nude-paddleboarding photos: “Are we going to talk about my penis?” The British actor is referring to an episode in August 2016, when he was photographed paddleboarding off the coast of Sardinia with his then-girlfriend, singer Katy Perry. The paparazzi images of Orlando went viral. Did the hysteria surrounding his penis surprise him? ‘Yes, it was extremely surprising,’ he says. ‘I wouldn’t have put myself in that position if I’d thought it would happen.’

How those photos happened: “I’ve been photographed a million times in a million ways. I have a good radar. We’d been completely alone for five days. Nothing around us. There was no way anyone could get anything. So I had a moment of feeling free.”

Whether he feels like the victim of double-standards: “I didn’t take it that deep, darlin’. What can I tell you? Note to self: you’re never free. Ha!”

How he handles breakups: “With Miranda, there was a sense that I don’t want my son to go back through the internet where people have made up lies [about us]. Miranda and I have a remarkable relationship. We co-parent really well.”

On his breakup with Katy Perry: ‘We’re friends,’ he says of Katy, without mentioning her by name. ‘It’s good. We’re all grown-up. She happens to be someone who is very visible, but I don’t think anybody cares what I’m up to. Nor should they. It’s between us. It’s better to set an example for kids and show that [break-ups] don’t have to be about hate.’

He’s on Instagram & Facebook now: “I think the times are changing. My mum kept an article from the mid-Noughties that said this kid had been Googled more than anyone on the planet for four years in a row. And it was me!’ He apologises, saying he’s concerned he sounds like a ‘knob’. “’I’m not a millennial. They live their lives through their phones. What happens to my son? How is he going to have a real relationship if it’s all happening on his phone? Disconnecting is massively important.”

His career now: “I had so much [success] in my twenties, most of my thirties was [spent] figuring out which way was up. I love what I do. It came from that connection kids felt with [The Lord of the Rings’] Legolas, or [Pirates of the Caribbean’s] Will Turner. I’m looking for that thing again…’ He appears to be unsure of where his career is headed, so I offer some advice. ‘I could see you as a good James Bond.’ He lights up. ‘Thank you! I will make a good Bond… when they make Bond someone all the kids fall for.’

Age has changed Orlando. ‘You’re no longer number one in the world. You look at everything around you and ask, “What is going on?”‘ Most recently, he’s been baffled by the differences between the UK’s and the US’s electoral systems. ‘What we grow up with at home is completely different. It’s like Star Wars over here.’

[From Elle UK]

“You’re no longer number one in the world. You look at everything around you and ask, ‘What is going on?’” That’s it in a nutshell. That’s the Orlando Bloom Conundrum right there. One moment, he’s the star of two of the biggest franchises in the world and in the next moment, he can’t get a callback or audition for an independent film. I actually don’t mean to be so harsh to Orlando, it must be difficult for him to come to the steady realization that he’s no longer the biggest deal around. But maybe the answer isn’t blatantly lying about those nude photos?? He absolutely knew he was being photographed, for the love of God. It was even claimed that he called the photographer himself.

    Oh please…! He knew.

  2. Maya says:

Such a shame – in my opinion he needs to change his managers and sign up with someone who can really help his career.

Go to a TV show which can be a big boast for his career.

  3. manda says:

I never understood his appeal in the first place. Will Turner was a little skinny minny! So all of this “not being popular anymore” makes total sense to me. Your point about him orchestrating the naked photos–hilarious!!!!

  4. Ayra. says:

I had no idea he was British, I’m actually in shock, especially with my love of the Lord of the Rings franchise.

  5. Liberty says:

So, he needs to go all in and give in to the long blonde Legolas hair. Give in! That can be his card. His “oh I know him!” Jared Leto playbook push. The way Owen Wilson has his shag and bent nose, and Daniel Craig his punch-you face with sailor’s squint. Orlando needs something distinctive that makes him more recognizable than every third hedge fund guy in Manhattan (based on photos above, for example). The only thing that has worked is elf hair.

Also, for further water adventures, probably a kayak.

    • Sixer says:

He could be one of the flying Elvi in certain upcoming nuptials?

    • katie says:

But he is such a terrible blond. He can’t pull it off with that olive skintone.

    • uvvc says:

His romantic Lord Byron-meets-Don Juan facial hair used to be that. Matched with those eyes, it can be quite lethal. It was his defining and definitive look for the better part of the past 15 years.

      Case in point: Three Musketeers.

  6. jinni says:

When one considers that the two franchises he’s apart of are two of the biggest franchises around and he most likely got paid crazy amounts of money from them it makes it hard to feel bad about him not ending up a major star. I am sure the cash from those franchises alone kept him more than afloat during the unsuccessful times and he probably still gets money from them to this day which is more than most actors get out of their careers.

Otherwise, this was a pretty basic interview nothing particularly interesting was said.

    • Lightpurple says:

He was just starting out when he signed onto those franchises. Unlikely he saw much money for Rings. Pirates wasn’t intended as a franchise but Disney typically signs actors to 3 picture deals, so they often turn up in burn off roles, so unless they renegotiated, he may have not made too much off the Pirates deal either

  7. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

He’s just not the greatest actor and has always relied on his look and franchises to get work. He should do theatre which am told he’s very good in. He never really proved he had more to offer than being eye candy even if he has some talent.

Early and fast success went to his head.

  8. Jeesie says:

He was never a proper big movie star. Just a teen heartthrob who landed support roles in some huge franchises. A bit like Robert Pattinson in his Twilight days. There’s a vast difference between that and being a name like Pitt, Clooney, Depp, Damon etc. and Bloom’s main issue is he’s never understood that.

He’s not a bad actor, but he’s not an especially good one either. He’d be fine in forgettable rom-coms, maybe some dull TV procedural, but he keeps trying to be a teen heartthrob and/or action star again, and that time is long over.

    • Abby says:

Oh I think I agree with all of this. Very Pattinson in Twilight.

I liked him in the franchises–he was one of my favorite parts, but I was a teen/young woman during those years and he was a heartthrob. I don’t think he’s a charismatic actor at all, he’s like the straight block of wood for more exciting characters to work off of.

This interview is a bit sad. It sounds like he realizes he’s not the heartthrob anymore and is kind of bewildered.

The paddleboat photos still make me shake my head in confusion. I can’t figure out why anyone (especially famous) would think that was a good idea.

      • WTW says:

Well, somehow Keanu has had a decades-long career, despite criticism of his acting skills. Keanu managed to do indie films and major blockbusters and has kept it up though age 52. Keanu could’ve just ended up a failed teen heartthrob as well, but his success in action films has really helped him, although even he has had strings of failures as well. John Wick helped revive his career. Anyway, I think his career would be a great model for Orly to follow. He’s 12 years younger than Keanu, so there’s still time.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

@WTW – the difference between Keanu and Orly is that Keanu never chased fame the way Orly did. Orly has always always been thirsty, Keanu not so much.

      • Anname says:

        Obligatory Rob fan comment 🙂
I think Rob is escaping the Orlando Bloom “franchise pretty-boy curse” because Rob knows what he wants. He has focused on character parts with auteurs/indie films, and has managed to gain the respect of critics. Orlando seems to love the trappings of fame, I don’t think Rob did as much.

      • third ginger says:

Oh Keanu. I think in my long 64 years Keanu has been my only crush who actually can’t act. However, as has already been pointed out, he found his niche, and he has done just fine.

      • rachel says:

@Anname I agree Patinsson has a good indie credibility.

    • frisbee says:

He was good in Kingdom of heaven with Liam Neeson, he seems better at those ‘heroic’ roles where he can make speeches/pronouncements. I agree with everyone who says he should concentrate on theatre for a bit – if he can put his ego to one side for long enough. He could do with checking Daniel Radcliffe’s career tragectory, Daniel has made the difficult transition from child to adult star, he works steadily and hasn’t pissed anybody off, he also doesn’t seek attention and pretty much proves life after a huge franchise can be done.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

I saw Radcliffe a few weeks ago in Rosencrantz and Gildentern are Dead and he was pretty good – the other lead actor was better. Am going to try and go again as I loved it.

I agree that Orlando has an ego – he thought he was going to be the next Johnny Depp.

    • Jeesie says:

@Anname Rob’s definitely going down a different, better path. My point was more that even during the height of the Twilight craze his fame level was much more teen heartthrob than movie star. And he seems to get that, and he understood he was basically starting from scratch as a serious actor. Whereas Bloom seemed to think he was a bona fide mega star and didn’t understand why he didn’t basically take over Depp’s mantle.

  9. Lolo86lf says:

Orlando Bloom still has a chance to become relevant again, maybe not as much as he was 10-15 years ago but he could bounce back some if he stops acting like a teenager. Nobody seemed to care that much about his naked pictures, it is water under the bridge this is the year 2017 not 1965. Orlando better not go the way of Shia Labeouf because then his career will be truly over.

  10. rachel says:

Bloom’s problem is that he’s not the best actor out there. Planty of them try to lead a franchise and have experienced failure. See Fassbender, Farrell etc. But they are talented so they can still count on being great dramatic actor and working with prestigious directors. Sadly for Bloom I don’t see it happen for him. However with a good agent he could have a good role on a tv show.

Ps: Bloom handing on award to La Isabelle Huppert at Indépendant Spirit Award was hilarious.

  11. detritus says:

He was shocked at the hysteria surrounding the photos, is how I read that quote… not surprised by the photos.
I wonder what reaction he was expecting?

    • third ginger says:

Wouldn’t it have been funny if he had said ” No one was paying any attention to me, so I peeled off the board shorts and let things fly” ?

      • detritus says:

        lol, the 10/10 honest response?
I would love that. ‘Katy was telling me no one cares about me, so I got my willy out and that showed her!’

  12. third ginger says:

He’s a nice looking young man, but he has not shown that he has much range thus far. And there is so much competition from actors who can play just about anything.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

      Ditto to everything you said.
Still, he might be stinking rich after 3 franchises so it’s not like he is broke and needs to take any role he is offered. Pretty sure success went to his head and he’s rejecting scripts he thinks they are not up to his level.
In Elisabethtown he was really bad….

  13. Beth says:

I love skinny dipping, but can’t imagine being photographed during my swim. Yikes!

  14. uvvc says:

His big competition back when he was huge were Heath Ledger, James Franco and Jake Gyllenhaal. Heath is dead and the other two both managed to create unique careers for themselves, getting noms and recognition right and left.

Orlando needs a complete overhaul. He needs to be on HBO, Showtime, Netflix etc. That is the only way he can remind the masses of his existence, who see him as quite passe now. Colin Farrell was exactly that, now he has climbed his way back up again and everyone all of a sudden loves him.

This guy was THE BIGGEST HEARTTHROB EVER when I was attending college. And a few years following that. He was on that Angelina-Colin Farrell-Clive Owen-Jessica Alba-Gerard Butler train. Some of those people became huge, some half-retired now. It happens.

Nowadays Orlando maintains his fame by dating popstars whom people once would have perceived as little random showbiz people – beneath his level and league.

  15. third ginger says:

Hollywood careers are fascinating. Actors [of either gender] need not only talent but also the right choices and timing. Your post reminded me that Jake G. is getting raves on Broadway these days.

  16. Loo says:

I loved Orlando Bloom when I was 16 to early 20’s I guess. And I still think he was perfectly fine in Lord of the Rings and the Pirates movies. He’s just not a dramatic actor. I think that he should have embraced being a second banana in blockbusters. Some actors I think are just good at certain things and should just stick to that. Like I don’t think that Colin Farrell has the right energy or acting style to lead big explosive blockbusters but small dramas and quirky dramas? He can do that in his sleep, he’s great at that.

  17. Mia LeTendre says:

He was in TWO franchises??? I can’t for the life of me remember seeing him in a single flick outside of the LOTR trilogy.
