The Cannes Film Festival should be renamed ‘The Nicole Kidman Festival’

67th Cannes Film Festival - Opening Ceremony

It’s that time of year! The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival is happening soon, which means it’s that time of year for me to get sick as hell and cover Cannes fashion while hopped up on over-the-counter decongestants (it’s an annual event here at Celebitchy). The line-up for Cannes was just announced and they should just rename this year’s event The Nicole Kidman Festival. (Incidentally, I would be down with that.)

Nicole Kidman will probably need to bring a few red carpet looks to Cannes this year. The actress is appearing in not one, but four titles heading to the 70th edition of the festival, as revealed on Thursday morning by fest director Thierry Fremaux.

Kidman stars in Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer alongside Colin Farrell, which is screening in the main competition. Also in competition is Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, which stars Kidman and Farrell again, plus Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning. Out of competition, the actress appears in How to Talk to Girls at Parties, the sci-fi film from John Cameron Mitchell based on a Neil Gaiman short story.

Finally, the actress is also in the second season of Top of the Lake, Jane Campion’s acclaimed TV drama from production house See-Saw Films. Episodes will be screened in Cannes as a special event.

This year’s Cannes jury head is Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Other films in competition include Wonderstruck by Todd Haynes, Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie’s Good Time (starring Robert Pattinson) and Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here (with Joaquin Phoenix). The first night will be a premiere of Andrei Zvyagintsev’s new film Loveless. The president of the Cannes Film Festival, Pierre Lescure, told media outlets that the organizers this year are very worried that “we are in a suspenseful moment for the world” and “Since we have a new surprise every day from Donald Trump, I hope North Korea, Syria will not cast a shadow” over Cannes. They’re right to be worried. Emperor Bigly Fists gets so mad when other people get attention. As soon as the first premiere happens, I imagine Bigly getting on Twitter to cause some commotion. Anyway, you can see the full Cannes lineup here at THR.

Incidentally, this is the poster for this year’s festival. It’s a still of Claudia Cardinale and people apparently think that the body has been retouched and slimmed down.

I mean… shouldn’t North Korea and Syria cast a shadow over events like Cannes, regardless of our asinine leader’s actions? That comment feels a little out of touch to me, like “don’t worry, our film festival mood won’t be broken by all those people dying”.

Take Trump out of the picture and that’s how it sounds. If artists truly care about humanity, the human rights abuses in these countries should make us all question our priorities as long as they’re still going on. At the very least, Cannes should make an effort to highlight stories about refugees and other victims of dictators, instead of just hoping they don’t cast a “shadow” over it. Especially now.

Wow, she’s really having a killer year. I totally forgot she was in Lanthimos’s latest and Top of the Lake. The Beguiled and How to Talk to Girls at Parties sound really promising also. Looking forward to her fashion too.

I’m excited as Almovodar as head jury member this year!

Can we talk about the Renaissance of Nicole Kidman? She blew me away in BLL, looking forward to her other output. I was never a HUUUGE fan of her (back in the early aughts when she was queen) but I really get it now.

      Nicole is the best.

    • Suze says:

she has a couple of really annoying actor ticks but other than that she blew me away in the therapy scenes

Actors needs to study those scenes… her face when she was reacting to her husbands OMG!

And i’m just so happy for my bb Colin Farrell! He’s having some greats movies too.

Her breathiness always annoyed me. I haven’t seen anything of hers for ages so not sure if she still does it but she always mistook breathing for emoting and that really annoyed me.

Still remember that red/pink Pucci dress she wore in Cannes like over a decade ago now. She was promoting some Von Trier movie she was in. Hair pulled back, lips still untouched, first time blonde or whatever, high high high slit with leg out…

She was at the height of her crushing red carpet reign that lasted for a good decade.

Pucci had designed the dress around some stunning Bulgari necklace she was wearing. I believe the necklace was used as the strap. It was glorious. Jewels everywhere.

    I miss that Nicole.

  5. Sage says:

She has been the red carpet Queen ever since she wore the green Galliano to the Oscars. Cate Blanchet may steal her crown one day..

  6. Amanda D says:

She looks so much older than her actual age. It’s startling what some will do to remain youthful…
