Candice Bergen slams John Edwards’ mistress Rielle Hunter

We haven’t heard much lately about Candice Bergen, 63, but she does pop up in films like Bride Wars and she had an ongoing role on “Boston Legal” until it was canceled late last year. Bergen has chimed in on John Edwards cheating scandal, which received more press attention while his wife, Elizabeth, did the rounds for her new book. On WowOWow.com, a site featuring blogs by prominent women like Cynthia McFadden, Whoopi Goldberg and Peggy Noonan, Bergen didn’t mince words when it came to her feelings about Hunter:

I have to say I agree with Joan on Elizabeth Edwards. The woman has terminal cancer for Christ’s sake and three kids and has been married to someone she describes as a good man for many years. The sleaze in this is, of course, John, but Rielle Hunter — who came up with that ridiculous name herself by the bye; her name used to be something entirely other and she gives women a black eye. We all know the type, they make your hair go all weird and your teeth chatter. They are utterly amoral, without a shred of conscience and tough as tacks. But I seem to have veered off message here. I also, like Joan, question her writing a book but till I read some of it, I’ll hold off on blathering on about it. She is a remarkable woman and I am very sorry she has had so much to endure. Including a husband who is dumb enough to be sucked in by an ambitious cooze.

Ooh I love how she writes! It’s like stream of consciousness with venom behind it. I don’t have as much hatred for Hunter as many people do and think that Edwards has more to answer to when it comes to the affair. It takes two and all that. While Elizabeth seemed to be vilifying the other woman in her public statements about the affair, the National Enquirer reported that behind the scenes she’s definitely making John pay for his indiscretions. Elizabeth is said to have kicked John out of the house two years ago and their public show of solidarity is supposedly just for PR purposes.

There are all sorts of rumors that Rielle is about to do a big interview with Barbara Walters, but that story came out last week and we haven’t hear much more about it. If she keeps quiet this story will probably die down, but there’s enough public interest in it for her to cash in on her story and make Edwards pay – both financially and in the press – for the baby he refuses to acknowledge.

    Haha, love it too!!!

  2. boo says:

How is it that Reille gives women a “black eye” when Elizabeth was going to completely F*** the democratic party by standing by her adultrous husband while he ran for president??? What if he did get the democratic nomination and his affair was discovered?

What a douchy tirade; even going as far as mocking her name change.

  3. Bodhi says:

Well Rielle IS a dumb name.

I love it! Candace is awesome!

  4. Tess says:

Candice Bergen. What an Elitist Bitch.

  5. ronnie says:

Um, Rielle didn’t cheat on her dying spouse…that was John. And don’t give me any crap about men being bamboozled and too weak to resist a woman’s wiles. Come on here!

  6. ! says:

“a husband who is dumb enough to be sucked in by an ambitious cooze.” Love it! And that name… identity crisis much?

  7. nanster says:

Rielle Hunter and John Edwards both suck and are equally at fault, but John Edwards is the lowest of the low for cheating on his spouse who has terminal cancer. I don’t know why Candace Bergen was commenting on the affair, but she is entitled to her opinion – and I agree with her.

  8. Gracie says:

I agree Ronnie. John is the one who cheated. Rielle, whatever you think of her, was a single woman. Who really knows what he told her about his marriage? He could have said anything.

And I totally agree with your last comments and I too am sick of hearing women blamed because a man cheated.

So John is smart enough to be President but too weak and dumb to say no to an affair?

  9. Jess says:

    Word, Candice!!!

  10. tasteT says:

  12. ChristinaT says:

i don’t think anyone is saying edwards is off the hook, but just like it takes some morality to not have an affair, it requires a similar sort of moral restraint not to get involved with a married man… especially under these particular circumstances… not all women would allow themselves to have an affair with a married man so it does take a certain level of nastiness to go there…

  13. Marilyn says:

I think Elizabeth’s not bashing John is for the younger children’s sake and to make sure that John and the “Ho” will not be together after Elizabeth is gone.

  14. Canuck says:

I LOVE Candice Bergen! Good for her for not pulling any punches!

  15. Renee says:

Candice Bergen saying cooze brings me more joy than I ever thought possible.

    Candice Bergen = Awesome!

Elizabeth Edwards’ family has a somewhat sordid history. There was a really ugly episode with racehorses being killed for insurance money back in the 1980’s. I don’t imagine her book covers that time frame. And yes, they got caught, but we sure don’t hear about it, do we?

  19. ibewheriat says:

If you have ever been around a ‘cooze’ like Rielle you might know that they aren’t above much to get the man they want. Yes John was pretty foolish and it must be very humiliating for the whole world to see he’s an utter aging fool for falling for her tricks. But Elizabeth was dealing with a new prognosis of being terminal during that period too. Grow a heart if you can, how well would you cope with that much pressure? Would all of your decisions be your best ones? Hard to tell…Candace likely has seen all the tricks in the cooze book, she was married to a very successful film director. More than a few cooze’s likely did similar right under her nose too.

  20. Aspen says:

Well…and I am sick of the mindset that allows so many to blame ONLY the married man and give the mistress a pass as though she were somehow blameless.

I do not blame women who are duped by married men into believing that the man is NOT married. That has happened to SO many women, and I feel for them…badly. I have ZERO sympathy for women who date married men knowingly and then excuse themselves by saying, “Well, it’s an unhappy marriage,” or “He’s going to leave his wife for me after the kids are grown,” or (in this case), “We only have to keep it a secret until she dies of terminal cancer.” All of those justifying comments are garbage. As a fallable and very flawed human being, myself, I have sympathy for the women who make these horrific errors in moral judgment when they are SORRY later. This woman isn’t sorry. She’s angry and self-important about it. Totally amoral…and now these two awful people have a child in the mix. That POOR kid!

HIS (John Edwards) offense was, of course, a far greater abomination and betrayal than Rielle’s. I don’t think anyone is questioning that. That doesn’t make Rielle any less of a hooker, and it doesn’t justify her one jot.

  21. Kristy says:

boomchakab, I think you may have this story mixed up. It is my understanding Reille Hunter’s father was involved with killing race horses for insurance money. Elizabeth Edwards father was a navy pilot and suffered a paralizing stroke back in the 1980’s.

  22. Jane says:

The murdering of expensive, yet insured, horses was not part of EE’s family history — it was Rielle Hunter’s father who commissioned the murder of his horse to collect the 150,000 insurance money! What a cooze she is and what scum her father is, guess this is what she was taught growing up; do whatever it takes to take whatever you want. Rielle is a hideous person in every sense of the word.
