Drake claims he was ‘racially profiled’ at a California country club

Celebrities On A Night Out At Craig's

Over the past few years, it feels like celebrities are starting to feel more comfortable using social media to speak out on racist incidents and incidents of extreme rudeness. Memorably, Solange Knowles used Twitter to discuss the victimization she felt at a Kraftwerk concert. Memorably, Cat Deeley recently went on a tweeting-binge when she had terrible service at an LA restaurant too, although her thing was not about race at all. Anyway, I thought about both of those incidents when I read that Drake Instagrammed-and-deleted some anger at California’s Madison Club.

Drake is fuming after a recent stay at La Quinta, California’s Madison Club.

“The most offensive place I have ever stayed at in my life with staff who pick and choose who they are going to accommodate based on racial profiling #Coachella,” the rapper, 30, wrote in a since-deleted post on Instagram early Monday with a snapshot of the facility’s logo. Drake’s fans are also voicing their concerns in the comments of the post — many tagging the club, whose account is private. “It should never take this level of a spotlight to assess your mandate and employee compliance,” one commenter said.

According to the Madison Club’s website, it is located 100 miles south and east of Los Angeles and bills itself as an exclusive residential community for the rich and famous — including late A-listers Frank Sinatra, Liberace, Cary Grant and Bob Hope. Drake performed at the annual music event during Future’s Saturday night set. Requests for comment from Drake and the Madison Club were not returned.

I believe him. I believed Cat Deeley and Solange too. I think there are some really crappy service employees and I absolutely think that it’s more than possible that a country club located in that area would be racist as hell. The Madison Club is close to Indian Wells, which is the ritzy tennis venue that Serena Williams boycotted for more than a decade because of an awful racist incident. That part of California is populated by the rich, old-money desert people and they’re mostly white. I wish Drake had been specific about what happened to him, because I’d really like to know how bad it got. I always feel like Drake is such an even-tempered guy, so for him to call out this place, it must have been REALLY bad.

Yes, if Drake of all people is calling this out, I believe it was bad. I bet the manager came groveling with complimentaries the second they realised the kind of attention who could attract.

  2. BJ says:

I believe him.He is not a person who has made these type of statements before. He has stayed in literally hundreds of upscale hotels and resorts over the years. So for him to call them out,it must have been some next level racism.

I’m sorry, I was very interested in reading this story until my eyes were assaulted by that pink top he was wearing. Drake is a hottie, why on earth would he don this ansemble????

    • Chaine says:

Bwahaha same thought here. That is the most fug hoodie ever seen on anyone anywhere.

    • Beth says:

Exactly what I was going to say. What was he thinking when he put it on? Ugh. Add the diamond owl pendant he bought and it will make me cringe. Too bad when sexy hotties like Drake commit fashion crimes like this

  4. The Original Mia says:

Not surprising at all. Money doesn’t trump racial bias. If a person is so inclined to see you as inferior, your bank account won’t matter. I’m glad he called them out. Doubt it will change anything, though.

  5. me says:

Why did he delete it? Why not stand by what you said Drake ???

    • nareeman says:

maybe his legal team advised him to do so, he is a celebrity and whatever happened if can not be proven can be consequential “libel”

  6. Pandy says:

    I think he’s an idiot so I don’t care.

  7. Diane says:

Setting aside any personal dislike of the man, and focusing on whatever happened that prompted this, I’m glad Drake spoke up. No level of perceived idiocy makes this type of behavior ok. I agree that it had to be bad for him to say something. I would also like to know the full back story.

  8. TrixC says:

I believe him but I think if he’s going to make these sorts of accusations he should be prepared to be specific and stand by it, not post something then delete it.
