13 Reasons Why is a great show, its graphic but I think it gets the point across without romanticizing suicide the way Ive seen movies do. Its not pretty to look at.

    • slowsnow says:

I had concerns about the show because my 16 year old son and his girlfriend are watching it and she has had some issues in the past due to an absent father and an addicted mum. They seemed to take it as a really interesting and honest serial. I still need to have a look though. Thanks for putting my mind a little bit more at ease @LolaBones

OMG! I’m so happy for Serena! Happy thoughts aside I watched 13 reasons why, and while I can understand why there might be concerns about teens actually committing suicide as to copy the show, I also found it extremely difficult to watch at some points and I think that might actually help teens. The rape scenes were very realistic and so raw, the victim blaming going around and the suicide itself I could not just watch. It also broke my heart when her mother found her. I think that parents should watch it with their teens and then have a long chat about life.

I loved Robert Osborne to pieces and I think Alec B. will be a great successor. Good pick.

    • Aysla says:

My 72 year old dad, a lifelong lover of TCM and classic films, was devastated when Robert Osborne passed away (as were we). He was also unhappy at the prospect of Ben Mankiewicz becoming the official host (Osborne had long been absent due to his health issues but my dad held out hope he would return and take back hosting duties)… Mankiewicz just lacks the natural charisma and warmth Osborne had. I’m glad to hear Alec Baldwin will be taking over The Essentials. I hope he works at having a calming effect. I am really curious to see how my dad feels about this. 🙂

I also always thought that AMC’s host, Bob Dorian, from back in the 90s was a great film host too. He would have made a great fill-in host for TCM, at the least. Wondering what ever happened to him…

      • third ginger says:

Aysla, Alec B. knows his movies and Hollywood history. What Osborne had and I think Baldwin will continue is genuine love and enthusiasm for the classics. My best to your Dad. I am only 8 years younger!

SusanneToo, I remember very fondly an exchange we had here on CB about the wonderful James Mason. Hollywood can remake A STAR IS BORN forever, but they will never do better than the Garland-Mason version.

      • SusanneToo says:

Ha! Your father and I are the same age. In addition to his vast love for and knowledge of movies, Mr. Osborne had a class and elegance that is in short supply nowadays.
The younger Mr. Mankiewicz is heir to a long family connection to Hollywood(screenwriters and directors)and I think that insider knowledge provided the snark he sometimes employed.
I thought Baldwin was one of the best co-hosts on The Essentials, so I believe it’ll be okay.
George Clooney’s father, Nick, was a great AMC host, also.
@third ginger I adored James Mason, from his romantic lead days to his late character actor career. That man had a voice!

      • Christin says:

Robert was a class act. I enjoyed Alec’s interview with him, and how Robert typed up a history of films, long before anyone took interest in what are now classic movies.

I noticed Bob D has a page (completely empty of information or links) on TCM’s site.

  7. Mannori says:

yes Serena! she’s a national treasure so the baby daddy dude better take good care of her…

  8. KiddVicious says:

I love turtles, I had a pet tortoise as a kid. It ran away. Took awhile, though.

I saw the Serena announcement come across my FB feed and couldn’t do the math in my head on whether she was pregnant during her Grand Slam. I love that she was and still kicked a**. Congratulations to her!

    • Northern_Girl 20 says:

Bahaha about the tortoise running away .. I LOVE turtles, took my kids to the aquarium a few weekends ago in Toronto and got all excited when the sea turtles came swimming by. I had to remind myself that I am 41 not 12 lol .. My phone lockscreen photo is picture of said turtle.

  9. AryaStark says:

Mark is the most awesome person and a turtle fits him perfectly. He has this laid back nature about him.

    • third ginger says:

I love him. One of our greatest American actors! Yet not too “serious” to be the Hulk.

      • AryaStark says:

@third ginger he is a fantastic actor. He’s very natural I find with his acting and I love him as Hulk, the deepness he brings to banner and the empathy. He’s my favourite living actor I think. Plus I’m a little in love with him lol. I love how he stands up for what he believes in.

  10. Boxy Lady says:

I watched that Bee Gees special on Sunday night and Celine topped everybody, even that awesome duet with Stevie Wonder and John Legend singing How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. The special won its time slot so hopefully they’ll reair it. I may be biased because I am a Bee Gees freak but I highly recommend watching it if it is shown again.

Congrats to Serena & fiancé !
