Last night’s MTV Movie and TV Awards were the first time that the acting categories were gender neutral, with men and women nominated in a single category, which I didn’t mind actually. I thought it was a great idea for a less popular awards show like this one, as it helped moved the show along. Kaiser and some other people made the point on Twitter that, if the larger awards shows did this, like The Academy Awards or Emmys, more men would win and it would give women less of a chance, which is likely true. The nominees for the MTV Awards are picked by MTV executives, but winners are decided by an online vote. I can see that being more “fair” than a panel of voters and whatever complicated weighting system is in place to count the votes. So the MTV Movie Awards are unique that way, they skew much younger of course, and it’s doubtful gender neutral categories will be adopted by other awards shows. It wasn’t a bad idea for this one I just didn’t think it was as progressive as they were touting.
Millie Bobby Brown won Best Actor in a Show, for her work as Eleven in Stranger Things, which also took home the award for Show of The Year. She was in a white sequin custom Calvin Klein shift dress which she accessorized with a blue ACLU ribbon and a blue ampersand, which represents support for GLAAD. The only thing I would complain about with this outfit were the white cowboy boots. They looked bizarre on camera and didn’t go with the dress, but overall she was very age appropriate and cute, which is typical for her. You can see her speech here on YouTube. She cried during it but she was still so self-possessed and well spoken. You get the impression that she’s very professional at the young age of 13.
Here’s presenter Hailee Steinfeld in Fausto Puglisi. This dress is goofy and gaudy with those cutouts, that pastel lilac color and those gold and silver embellishments. At least she’s not known as Justin Bieber’s girlfriend though, right?
Hailee was dressed in the yellow Belle dress from Beauty and The Beast for the opening number, and she was super cute in that I thought. Adam DeVine hosted last night and his whole bit was owning his awkwardness, which worked somewhat. It was entertaining, except for the subpar musical acts, and didn’t go on too long.
Speaking of the musical acts, here’s former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello, who performed her song “Hey Ma,” from The Fate of The Furious, with J Balvin & Pitbull. I guess her thing is floral dresses. This song wasn’t incredible, but it’s mildly catchy and it was SO MUCH better than Noah Cyrus’s performance. They had actual dancers, a beat, and musicians who had more going for them than being Miley Cyrus’s sister. Also, I just watched the video and it’s not bad, it’s a cute little pop song.
Also Kat Graham was there in a huge loose black pantsuit with one arm. You know that the MTV Movie Awards were not well attended when Kat Graham showed up but Nina Dobrev couldn’t be bothered.

I just hope her greedy stage dad doesn’t drain the life out of her though, she’s already had to pull out of a convention because of overwork. At 13 years old.

I think the family must be nagging her for money. Really sad how the children in showbiz sometimes become the family breadwinners.
MMB was so cute last night and her speech was wonderful.
Overal there were some notable speeches: the guys from Moonlight that won best kiss, Emma Watson & Taraji P Henson to name a few.
The show itself was a bit of a snooze. I found the musical acts to be terrible across the board. Noah’s singing was more talking and Hey Ma is really average. The skits were cute though

Some of these speeches are a little to earnest for what is essentially an extended advertisement. I just hope that’s these young stars staying on brand and that they don’t actually put any value on this show. That would be awful. They’re totally meaningless “awards” and the audience is tiny these days.
Actually MTV picks the final winners (if you show up, it’s more likely you’ll ‘win’). I’m pretty sure they wrote that on a disclaimer somewhere.

I like Millie Bobby Brown but I have a feeling she will be another Malculay Culkin.
Her dad seems to be very controlling, and her parents moved from the UK to the US and sold their home and belongings just to support her career! They even made their 2 older kids drop out of school to move and support Millie too!
I honestly can’t see this ending well for any them. And I don’t like how Millie is hanging around people like Paris Jackson. She has begun to hang around the wrong crowd!

Also, possibly unpopular opinion, I hate the combined gender categories thing. I do think both Emma and Millie were given wins partly so they could be like “SEE? Gender inclusion works!!!” (I’m not saying they didn’t deserve to win, they absolutely did) But don’t think I didn’t notice Emma was the ONLY female in the best actor in a movie category.
Honestly, equality is NOT pervasive enough to have a single category yet. It’s the first year of this and only one female in the category. Of course she won but in subsequent years what chance will the female actors have? I’m not holding my breath.
