Dave Chappelle apologizes for saying we should give Donald Trump a chance

Comedian Dave Chappelle on the set of 'A Star Is Born' filming in downtown Los Angeles

Just a few days before the election, Dave Chappelle was doing standup in New York, and in the midst of his political jokes, he basically blamed Hillary Clinton for releasing – or something? – Donald Trump’s “grab ‘em by the p-ssy” tape. It was all very convoluted, but there was definitely an impression that Chappelle disliked Trump and HRC equally, which… I hope everyone who claimed that “Trump and Clinton are equally bad” now feels like a giant a–hole. Chappelle went on to host the first post-election episode of Saturday Night Live. Apparently, he really struggled to give voice to how the majority of the country felt about Trump’s victory, and he tried to strike a hopeful tone. At the end of his monologue, he said he was willing to give Trump a chance and he hoped Trump would give all of us a chance too. Well, now Chappelle regrets even saying that.

President Trump has blown his chance to win over Dave Chappelle.

“I was the first guy on TV to say, ‘Give Trump a chance.’ I f―ked up. Sorry,” the funnyman said Monday night at the Robin Hood Foundation benefit in the Big Apple, according to MSNBC’s Willie Geist. Chappelle hosted the first “Saturday Night Live” after Trump was elected, and urged viewers to cut the commander-in-chief some slack.

“I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. And I’m going to give him a chance, and we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too,” he said in January.

Thanks, Dave Chappelle! I really mean that, I’m thanking him for realizing his mistake. This is why I side-eyed the sh-t out of Jon Stewart and all of those celebrities and journalists who were like “we don’t know what he’s going to do, there’s always a chance he could be amazing as president.” No. There was never a chance. He campaigned on a platform of violent racism, violent white nationalism and violent misogyny. He ran out of “chances” before he was even elected emperor. I’m glad Chappelle apologized and I hope more people apologize for appeasing fascism.

Chappelle also told the crowd at this event that he thinks Trump “is way out of step with the way people feel in America. Am I wrong about that? Every day you wake up and you never know what he is going to do next. He’s exciting like you thought a black president would have been.”

It really boggles my mind how people are so surprised at how inept and unsuited Trump is at getting anything done, let alone being president. The evidence was there for years. His tunnel vision at trying to prove Obama wasn’t American and the whole birther controversy should have showed people just how mentally unhinged he was. But no! News outlets reported on that seriously like there was a shred of evidence to be found. I keep saying he has the early stages of dementia or something. The way he acts is not normal, but the Republicans won’t act unless he does something truly heinous, like murder his beloved Ivanka. I hate even that I’m writing that, but I don’t see how else he’ll get kicked out of office.

The evidence of his incompetence has existed since his casino days in Atlantic City. He was advised by a financial person in his employ that opening the Taj Mahal would cannibalise business from his existing casinos. Which it did. He advised that in order for the Taj to be profitable it would need to pull in daily profits that it was unlikely to achieve given then current competition and business atmosphere. Trump proceeded to get this advisor fired and everything that man said occurred. Trumps hubris led to multiple bankruptcies. His conduct then is no different than what we are experiencing now. Trump is a political Madoff. We are being subjected to best case country wide worst case global Ponzi scheme.

Apology accepted. I understand people’s initial desire to whistle past the graveyard and hope for the best, despite all evidence to the contrary. But we’re way past that now. I’m glad he acknowledged it. Trump is irredeemable.

Dave was not supporting Dump nor was he stating that Hilary and Dump were the same. Just because he criticized both at the same time does not mean he thought they were the same. I don’t agree with some of the things that were reported at the time his original statement came out, but he was right that there are many valid reasons to dislike Hilary. He ended up voting for her anyway. So why does it matter that he was not overly praising her ass if he voted for her?

I don’t put what Dave said in the same category as Jon Stewart. There was an arrogance and willful ignorance behind what Jon said about Dump and most importantly a lot of Dump’s supporters. Like Jon could not believe that some people he knew could be racist assholes because he knew and liked them.

If Dave should apologize for anything though, he should be apologizing for those gross trans jokes or not understanding what intersectionality is and how it should be the only worthwhile approach to social justice.

Lastly, he is starting to look like Bokeem Woodbine.

    • Ccinkissimmee says:

Yes, yes and More yes… Ditto @ the Bokeem Woodbine comparison as well.

    • doofus says:

EVERY TIME I see Woodbine in something I think “does Dave Chappelle have a brother?” Then I look him up on IMDB and realize.

and I agree COMPLETELY that, now with his newly bulked up frame, Chappelle absolutely looks SO MUCH (more) like Woodbine.

  4. Neelyo says:

Wish more public figures had the courage to admit their mistakes.

  5. Needles says:

Went to see Chappelle a few months ago and he also offered his apologies. He then proceeded to say that the reason HRC had lost the election was because she had been such a “b*tch”, so yeah. It was comforting to see that no one in the audience laughed or agreed with this statement.

    • Angela82 says:

I am tired of ambitious assertive “not a 10” women being referred to as b*tches. Give me a god damn break. Trump is a thousand times bitchier and whinier and more emotional than Hillary ever was and yet men see him as this amazing businessman. He is the freaking snowflake! Ugh. /rant over.

      • Waverly Thomas says:

I’m male and I totally 100% agree if you ask me at least half the population of men at least in this country are winer’s and bitch about every little thing

  6. Lucy2 says:

I can’t wrap my head around the idea that people thought he might turn out ok, but I rather see people re-evaluate and admit they were wrong than continue to stamp their feet and scream “But Hillary…but Obama!”

  7. Louise177 says:

I’m not going to apologize for hoping Trump wouldn’t be horrible. Dave and many others didn’t think Trump was great just hoped that what is happening now wouldn’t. He’s not President of the corner gas station. He’s President of the United States. It baffles me that people were hoping he would be a disaster just to prove I don’t know what. It’s a hollow victory considering he’s destroying the country.
