Chris Pine’s ‘quirk’ is that he uses a flip-phone: ‘I just like the non-complicated’

Sigh… does anyone else miss Chris Pine’s beard? I do. The beard was SO hot. Pine still looks hot without the beard, but I actually think he’s trying to grow it back? Please do so, Chris! Anyway, Chris and Gal Gadot are in New York this week promoting Wonder Woman, and Chris seems to be enjoying himself. It must be nice to not have to carry the weight of a superheroine film, but I’ll give him credit: Chris is very proud of WW and you can tell. He enjoys being part of such a woman-centric film and he’s proud to be part of this film in particular. Anyway, Chris Pine is sort of a hipster, did you know that? He still uses a flip-phone, not a smart phone. And he bought a record player.

In the age of technology and chaos, Chris Pine yearns for simplicity. In fact, the “Wonder Woman” star uses a flip phone instead of a smart phone.

“I have a flip-phone. The flip world is a whole world you gotta get into,” Pine, 36, told “Good Morning America” anchor Michael Strahan Tuesday.

“I’ll tell you what, here we go,” Pine attempted to explain his technology quirk. “I recently got a record player and a flip phone. I kind of like the simplifying down. I just like the simple, I just like the non-complicated.”

While the globe is desperate to constantly spread and share information, Pine wants to back away. “I don’t want to be connected so much,” he added. Despite making life simple, having a flip phone comes with its own setbacks – including difficulty texting.

“I don’t know if you remember, like, T9?” he quipped about having a limited number of buttons. “Like you remember when you had to do that T9 thing, wow!”

I’m including the GMA interview below. Chris says this when he’s in the “Lasso of Truth” segment, so I guess he’s telling the truth. I sort of believe him too. I’m not a hipster, but I have a similar technology nostalgia too. I had a flip-phone for years, then I had a terrible smartphone and now I have no cell phone. I was going to just buy a cheap-o burner phone for all my cell phone needs but when I finally killed my smartphone, I found I didn’t miss cell phones at all. So… does Chris need to get with the times? Or is it fine?

    He’s Kirk IRL!

So many celebrities talk about not having a cellphone or computer. It’s not that i don’t believe them, but it is so indicative of the bubble they live in that they can do this and still exist in the world.

    • Nyawira says:

No. It’s merely indicative of people whose private time is constantly under attack. There’s a massive difference between the intrusion you experience and that of a celebrity. And it’s not just strangers on the street intruding on their time, it’s industry folks trying to bypass their reps and celebrity adjacents trying to endear themselves.
The vast majority of people can safely limit email and facetime intrusion anyway, they just never question the Smart Phone thing.

He’s not the only one. My brother in law is a lawyer and he has a smart phone, but when he has to talk he uses a separate flip phone. We tease him about it being a burner phone but he just finds it more comfortable for conversations.

    • Leigh says:

That’s so odd to me, I had a flip phone and a smart phone for a while, the connection on the flip was SO much worse, I was always annoying whomever I was speaking to by asking them to repeat themselves over and over. Now that I dumped the flip phone talking is SO much cleaner on the smart phone!

      • FLORC says:

        Full opposite for me.
My flip had a battery that lasted over a week. Reception Anywhere! It was perfect. No cracked screens. No hassles all my smart phone friends had. Group messaging sucked. All individual messages.

I broke down for business purposes. I miss it.
        Typing from my s7 edge…

I’ve had my flip phone for at least 10 years and love it. I have pay as you go as I don’t like being in a contract. Texting is a breeze but then again I don’t spend my life with a phone glued to my hand, afraid I’ll miss a text or something on Facebook. My vice is podcasts on my MP3 player which I listen to in bed once the light goes off.

  4. Anna says:

when did he start looking middle aged? ew

    • Zuzus Girl says:

Ew? Are we shaming people for aging now? Nothing wrong with a little grey at the temples. Some of us find maturity intriguing.

      • Tia says:

Just ignore her – when her face falls off a cliff in her mid 40’s she will realise what a prat she sounds like….

    • jetlagged says:

I find his maturity the opposite of eww. Even just a few years ago he still looked like a boy, or at the very least boy-ish. Now he is a man. Only recently have I found that I fancy him, more than I thought I ever would.

I literally told my husband this morning that I don’t want a “smartphone” anymore. I have the apple 7 plus and it’s too all consuming. I love having the camera. But the email the gossip (hi celebotchy) and the FB for what? When my eyes hurt from the blue light and my kids and my LIFE are happening live in front of me. I want a flip phone and a land line. I miss having the real estate in my mind being ALL MINE

  7. Hiccup says:

I’ve taken the Facebook app off my smartphone to limit nonsensical checking and mute the ringtone complete pretty often nowadays. I found I was getting pretty stressed by the fact that since I have a cellphone people expect me to answer it or be available at their convenience and sometimes just keep ringing too. My old job I had my work phone ringing off the hook constantly plus emails texts and irl people at all hours, I was Def wishing for more analog days and people not spoiled by constant availability and a thousand different ways to contact me that were all on my very convenient smart phone!

More importantly, I think Chris is hot especially with the beard! But he seems a bit sad? Idk, he gave off that vibe in the last star trek movie too. Maybe it’s just his acting 😉

  8. Adele Dazeem says:

I just came here to say I LOVE YOU CHRIS PINE. call me on my rotary phone baby. We can page each other and I’m always available. You can fax me too.

  9. FLORC says:

    So hot.

  10. Sassafras says:

He is so hot. Looking forward to seeing him, Gadot, Nielsen, et al. in this movie.

May I ask those who use, or know about, flip phones, do you recommend a particular model? Thank you in advance

    • yellow says:

Casio GZone. Get it on Amazon for your carrier and have them connect it. I got one just this year, but know someone who’s had theirs since ’08 (though it’s an older model). My previous phone was still kicking since 2004 and I hated to give it up, but dropped it too many times in recent years and the display went dark. I loved that phone more than the G’zone, but it’s older technology and my carrier will not connect a replacement. With the Gzone you can drop it quite a bit so I guess I’m good!

      • Sassafras says:

Thank you, yellow–I will check that out on Amazon. Appreciate the info 🙂

Also Jazzie30, the Razr sounds good too.

  11. Jazzie30 says:

Chris Pine, you are so FINE. Motorola Razor here for conversations….smart phone for the rest.

  12. Rae says:

Nothing to add other than…mmmmm, Chris Pine.

  13. monette says:

Omg, I used to think Motorola Razors were sooo cool. But I couldn’t aford one back in the day.
