RuPaul on Drag Race: ‘These are little boys who are ostracized from society’

It seems like we just met the fabulous queens of the ninth season of the reality television hit RuPaul’s Drag Race, but we’re already at the final four and America’s Next Drag Superstar will be crowned on June 23.

The show’s ageless creator, RuPaul (who, if we have to assign a number, is 56), recently took part in a Reality Roundtable discussion for The Hollywood Reporter. He joined other reality show producers, including Kris Jenner and Leah Remini, to discuss the current state of the ever-popular genre. The always outspoken Glamazon had a lot to say. Here are some of the highlights:

Drag Race strikes a chord with viewers: The subtext [for Drag Race] really is the tenacity of the human spirit. These are little boys who are ostracized from society and from their families a lot of times — boys playing with girls’ things, it’s an act of treason in a male-dominated culture — and here they are blooming and thriving, and it’s interesting to watch someone reveal their struggles.

On “Reality Show 101”: I wish there was a therapy group that is specifically for new-to-reality stars. I brought this up to the producers recently. We want to produce a video, like when you get on an airplane and they tell you about the emergency exits and the safety belts. We want to do that for the girls on our show because they need to be prepared for the trolls on social media and for family members. I always say, “Don’t have your boyfriend manage your career.” They see the fame, they see that their career is going to be propelled, but they don’t know about all the other stuff that, for a lot of us, took years of wrong turns to figure out.

On living life on his own terms: When I was a little boy, I wanted to fit in and I could never, but I thought, “You know what, I’m smart enough to figure this out. Let me see what my entry will be.” And I figured it out. I said, “Oh, this is all a joke, it’s all an illusion, it’s all made up.” I was surprised that other people weren’t going, “You know, this is all made up, right?” And I was looking for my tribe of people to do that. You know where I found that tribe? On PBS’ Monty Python’s Flying Circus. I thought, “They exist; my people are out there!” (Laughter.) Because it was so irreverent, they made fun of everything and, if I really thought about it, before that it was Bugs Bunny, who was just heckling everything. He’s like, “Don’t take life too seriously.” So I still feel that way, and I have to remind myself every day.

Ru’s advice for the “children in nature”: I would hope that these kids would learn how to navigate their lives. Everybody walks around this life, and it looks like they have the instruction book. Nobody does; everybody is faking it. And kids need to know that. It’s back to the Bugs Bunny philosophy, which is that this life is an incredible experience, so have fun with it. Don’t take it too seriously and try everything. Use all the colors in the crayon box.

On what ends up on the cutting room floor: A lot of times, kids come on, and after the show they’ll say, “I was edited unfavorably.” The truth is, we used the best of them. We never want someone to look bad. They say a lot worse things, and we actually soften them.

Is that last answer some subtle shade directed squarely at Drag Race Season 4/All Stars Season 2 contestant Phi Phi O’Hara? Sure sounds like it, but I don’t mind. Ru does seem to genuinely care about the queen-testants on his show (when I interviewed him back in the day, he referred to them as his “kids,” and I think he has their best interests at heart). In fact, the feeling between Ru and most of the Drag Race contestants is mutual, as evidenced by the recent video series on Billboard, called “Spilling the Tea.” Check around the 4:50 mark to check out what Drag Race alums Manila Luzon, Derrick Barry, Mariah, Willam and my all-time favorite Pandora Boxx have to say about how Ru inspired them.

As for this season of Drag Race, Ru spoke with TIME and addressed the season’s most shocking elimination, that of fan favorite (and beret aficionado) Valentina, who tried to get away with “lip syncing for her life” while wearing a mask that obscured her mouth. When asked if he was disappointed with her, Ru admitted, “Valentina was someone who I really did think would go all the way. And then when I saw what she did in the challenge and ultimately in the lip-sync, I felt that she had given up. She’s smarter than what she did in the challenge, so that’s why I was disappointed.”

Who do you have as the winner for season 9? In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, reigning champion Bob the Drag Queen said, “Points-wise, I think Shea Couleé should win. But in terms of whom I want to win, I want it to be Trinity or Sasha.” He added, “My favorite queen is still Peppermint. I don’t even know if it makes sense, but I just love her. I don’t think she should win, but she’s still my favorite.” I know, Bob. I am #TeamPeppermint myself (in fact, come payday, I’ll knock a few bucks her way to help her complete her upcoming biographical documentary Project Peppermint). And for Drag Race fans the wait is almost over; two weeks from Friday, we’ll know for sure who America’s Next Drag Superstar will be.

This season of drag race has been sooooo boring. I don’t know if it’s because of the move to vh1 and editing/production (no mini challenges, no pit crew, lame challenges ) or the quality of this seasons queens-but it is not the best season. Even the front runner seems like a third runner up quality kind of queen. And after the awesomeness of as2 and last season it’s been a bummer.

    • Cupcake says:

I am loving this season! It was Season 7 that made me yawn.

      • Beckymae says:

Same S7 was turrible but this one is great. Best top four in a loooong time but I’m Team Sasha, I love a weirdo

  2. Alex says:

Ru needs to stop being so damn transphobic. It comes across on the show too and in 2017 I’m shocked he gets away with it.
Love Ru but transphobia is it okay

    • edith says:

peppermint came out as trans on his show this season… as did jiggly caliente, kenya michaels, gia gunn, sonique, carmen carrera, monica beverly hills and stacey lane matthews. in what way is he being transphobic aside from the old catchphrase “She-Mail” (which he doesnt use anymore after being called out for)/ his thoughts on being called “tranny” ? I understand that these words are slurs but I feel like it’s like reaching for him to be called transphobic just because he used those words /and doesnt use it anymore. He obviously is not by promoting trans queens and standing up for them. Or maybe I missed something than I’m happy to be educated

      • Beckymae says:

Agreed, Edith! No way is Ru transphobic, did he have a journey when it came to the language he was appropriating, yeah, but nowhere near transphobic

    • Brandy says:

Yeah, I don’t get this at all from RuPaul. Ru loves everyone and has clearly done so much work on getting to a place in life where she can love everyone. I don’t see transphobia anywhere close to Ru, at all. RuPaul gives me life!

I agree with Bob (who is one of my faves along with Alaska, Latrice, & Jujubee) that Shea should win because she is the most talented overall and has won the most challenges, BUT I really like all of them and would be happy if any of them won- even Trinity’s bitter behind. Peppermint is adorable but she has a little ways to go in her drag. I mostly like her because of her personality and her comic timing. I am glad that she outlasted Alexis who should have gone home in weeks three or four.

Valentina was pretty but also one note. I was getting sick and tired of the wide-eyed ingenue routine.

I wonder if that question about “reality show 101” was kind of a nod to Nina or maybe acknowledging that bringing on someone who clearly has issues and putting them under pressure like this without support is not good. Yes, they are adults but this show is trying to market itself as something more than just a competition with all the impromptu therapy sessions with the girls before they go on stage. They need to do the same when the camera goes off as well.

    • ElleBee says:

I LOVE Shea. If she doesn’t win I’d be disappointed but I wouldn’t mind a Sasha win too much

      • Aiobhan Targaryen says:

I think of the four Shea and Sasha are the most creative. Ever since Snatch Game Sasha has really grown on me.

I loved Drag Race and would also totally watch a show about drag kings

“On “Reality Show 101”: I wish there was a therapy group that is specifically for new-to-reality stars” the melt downs and scandals are part of the whole industry. no producer is interested in having stable people that make no mistakes.

  6. Patricia says:

Team Peppermint! She has that thing, when she lip syncs I am so fully entertained. She has her amazing personality, sense of humor, great voice, comedic timing. Yes her fashion is a little rough (like WHAT was that final runway dress haha so awful), but at the end of the day drag is about so much more, to me.

And for me the best runway moment of the season was her rainbow look, so she can come through at times with fashion. It didn’t even get a lot of attention but when she stomped out in that rainbow-brite looking getup I was struck!
My husband likes Trinity the most because she just cracks him up.

  7. iGotNothin says:

I honestly don’t think these queens need Reality Show 101 anymore. They all have it figured out — be as vanilla and uncontroversial as possible. That’s why everyone says this season is so lackluster. It was the same for AllStars. New fans and online trolls make it difficult for the queens to honestly work through their problems in that pressure cooker.

Also…if you come in completely confident and slay the competition, you are great and totally deserve to win. Until it becomes obvious that you are a front-runner, and then the fans inexplicably hope for your downfall and begin rooting for your less deserving competitors.

  8. Lara says:

My theory is a double winner this season – Shea and Sasha. They’ve won challenges together and there’s been a lot made of them being a ‘dream team’. If not then I’m putting a bet on Sasha as there hasn’t been a winner like her yet.

Also I agree with a previous poster that season has seemed a little lacklustre. No mini challenges, no Ru messages at the beginning. I heard it was because it was filmed by Logo and then edited by VH1. I also haven’t liked how they seem to be forced into talking about a ‘message’ whilst getting ready I.e weight, eating disorders etc.

  9. QQ says:

I adore this man, his style whether in Drag or out of is just so so so sharp, so Fun!.. I remember the first time I came to the US and I was 13 and I saw him and just thought OMFG that is The Most BEAUTIFUL GLAMOROUS PERSON IN LIFE!!! then I saw him Out of Drag and I couldn’t believe someone just could be so amazing at every level

  10. Vinot says:

I don’t get the Sasha love?? The future of drag is taking yourself way too seriously and wearing a Jughead crown??

I love Ru, so much, but truth be told, he is very removed from the realities of the contestants while their on the show and has admitted multiple times that he barely remembers the queens’ names after they leave the show.

I did clock the Phi Phi shade, but I also wondered at the “don’t let your boyfriend manage your career” part. Sharon Needles shade??

  11. PamelaJudy says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Peppermint wins. She’s the first openly trans Drag Queen contestant and that pushes the boundaries a little more than just having a comedy queen or a pageant queen win.
I know there are quite a few more trans contestants but as far as i can recall, Peppermint is the only one that has outed herself DURING the competition.
Being trans is a hot button issue these days, with those hideous bathroom bills being introduced, Zeke being outed on Survivor and Caitlyn Jenner everywhere spilling her special privileged view of transitioning as a rich white person.

  12. Jenna says:

RuPaul empowers the Trans community. Kudos!
