Johnny Depp, humble poet: Flying commercial would ‘a f–king nightmare’

Johnny Depp arrives at Tokyo International Airport

Here are some photos of Johnny Depp arriving in Tokyo yesterday. Quick question to all of the musicians out there: would you travel on a long, international flight with just your guitar in your hand and no guitar case? The idea behind it, I’m sure, was to make Johnny Depp look like a humble troubadour, a completely normal artistic type who needs to just carry his guitar everywhere because he never knows when the need to pluck and sing will take over. Johnny Depp: humble poet/rock star/artist. Except that as Depp’s lawsuit against his former managers heats up, a completely different portrait is being revealed. In newly revealed emails to and from Depp and his ex managers, Depp claims he can’t fly commercial, can’t stop overspending and can’t stop signing on to terrible movies to pay his bills. Incidentally, it seems like Depp’s ex-managers were trying to keep him fully informed of the extent of his financial situation. Which, if you’ve been paying attention, seemed pretty clear months ago – even The Hollywood Reporter picked a side, and they did not pick the side of the movie star.

Just over five months after Johnny Depp sued his former business managers for $25 million over allegations of fraud and mismanagement, The Management Group is firing back with a new set of evidence that claims Depp and his team were made aware of his crippling financial situation long before he reportedly learned about his $40 million debt. E! News obtained the legal documents filed by TMG, which include 11 exhibits of email correspondence between Depp himself, his sister Christi Dembrowski, and other lawyers, agents, managers and bankers regarding the movie star’s accounts. In an email dated early 2010 and sent to Dembrowski by Johnny’s main business manager, Joel Mandel, he wrote that his bank accounts were nearly $4 million overdrawn.

Additionally, Mandel requested Depp’s signature on documents to secure a $6 million loan, to which his family member replied, “was gonna get them to you this afternoon…no worries!” Other conversations between the parties often focused on an urgency to retrieve Depp’s signature on other various documents related to his finances.

Mandel reached out to Depp directly in December 2009 to express concerns over The Pirates of the Caribbean star’s lavish spending habits. He advised his client to “take it easy on holiday spending” and “discuss some dollar limit” on participating in a Dillinger Museum auction. Mandel also asked to meet with Depp in person “to talk about where we are financially, what we have borrowed in order to sustain ourselves, what we have had to do to obtain those borrowings, what is now necessary to pay those borrowings back, and finally, to look realistically at income and expenses to work together on how to make sure that these are back in balance.”

The celeb responded one day later, explaining, “I am doing my very best on holiday spending, but there is only so much I can do, as I need to give my kiddies and famille as good as Christmas as possible, obviously within reason.” Johnny also expressed his concern over flying commercial, claiming that because of paparazzi presence, it “would be a f–king nightmare of monumental proportions.”

Depp then pointed to his upcoming film projects as a monetary solution for his financial crisis. According to Johnny, he was set to earn $20 million for The Tourist, $35 million for Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and $20 million for Dark Shadows. He also offered to sell personal belongings such as art, bikes, cars and property to offset the debt. Depp concluded, “I don’t like being in this situation, but there wasn’t a whole lot of choice, as The Rum Diary was a sacrifice we knew would be happening and the last proper paycheck was Public Enemies.”

TMG alleges, “Depp wants to deny this discovery because it will establish that TMG did everything within its power to make Depp, and all of his closest advisors, fully aware of Depp’s financial condition. If TMG was trying to hide Depp’s finances to cover-up their alleged misconduct, they would not have repeatedly advised Depp’s long-term personal lawyer, Jake Bloom, and his longtime agent, Tracey Jacobs, regarding the situation.”

[From E! News]

Again, no surprise. I don’t think it’s totally beyond the realm of possibility that Depp’s ex-managers made some shady deals or skimmed some money, but I also think that they have the receipts going back for years about how Depp spent like a drunken pirate and how he had no concept of his debt. He is the embodiment of #RichPeopleProblems. He is not the humble, scarf-wearing poet/troubadour. Poet/troubadours don’t have to sign $6 million floater loans before they board their private jet.

He’s another star that became famous in his teens, and is stuck forever at that age. He has no perspective on real life, the money has flowed, no one has told him “no” in forever, and he’s an addict.

    • emilybyrd says:

Yeah. That’s it: nobody has said “no” to him in goodness knows how long. When that happens, people start thinking they’re infallible and that their way is the only right way.

      • Old brat says:

Nobody says No to him, he is an addict and also he is extremely difficult person ( an abusive powerful entitled white male in Hollywood) .

  2. Jem says:

All that money and he looks like….THAT; crappy teeth and unwashed stank and all.

And ‘familie’? Really? Can’t spell either

    • Izzy says:

He said “famille,” which is French for family. Still pretentious AF though, for him…

      • GiBee says:

Meh, this may be the first, last, and only time I do something resembling defend Depp, but the mother of his children (who he was still with at the time) is French… occasionally slipping in a French word, especially the one for family might be the only part of the whole thing that ISN’T pretentious, obnoxious, and just downright stupid.

  3. Nicole says:

Depp’s transformation into Kieth Richards is complete. Except Kieth is better with his money.

    • lucy2 says:

I thought it was Keith at first glance, and then read the text. Yikes.

    • Rory says:

To be fair to Keith he’s kept himself slimmer and less orange.

    • Shirurusu says:

I kind of love Keith but he said himself in his biography that anyone who tried to keep up with him or had him as a role model pretty much ended up dead or terribly stuck in drugs in the seventies. Unfortunately none of the wannabe Keiths have his crazy constitution or necromancer skills.

    • Ksenia says:

That, and Keith is an ACTUAL musician, too! “Pluck and sing” w no particular adjective or adverb (maybe “bigly?”) attached, just about sums up Depp’s musical talent.
I can’t stand this 50-something man in his teenage (attempted) disguise, the multiple scarves, the dark glasses, the carried guitar, the pretenses—wow. It would be scary to see him in person–like a (probably smelly) vision you’d hope that, if you blinked at it twice, would completely go away.

  4. Chaine says:

Will someone please tell him his facial hair is too patchy to support a proper mustache?

  5. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

It would only be a monumental nightmare for those flying commercial. Eye-roll.

  6. Liv says:

Most of his expenses are dumb but the private jet thing would be necessary for someone of his fame especially in 2009 when those emails were written. I shared a cross Atlantic flight with Jeremy Piven once, years after that stupid Entourage show and it was no fun. My bf tells me there was a little commotion as he was going through security, I was busy on my phone. He boarded first which only draw more attention to his presence. Some silly college kids kept trying to casually walk into first class and get a look. When he disembarked first there were mutterings about celebrity privelege. He cleared before us but we left the airport before him because he found himself slowed by either a gaggle of paps or selfie seekers (i couldnt tell from a distance). He didnt seem particularly mad at being recognised but I imagine if you are Jack Sparrow in 2009, the attention is a million times worse. I would be pissed if I had to share a flight with Johnny. I would want to know why he cant just spring for a private jet like everyone else of his level.

    • Kaitx says:

Celebrities flying commercial below the radar can be done… I flew from Vancouver to London just before Christmas a couple of years ago and Colin Firth was on the plane. There was no uproar, no fans trying to storm first class. No fuss at all. I reckon he didn’t go through security like a “normal” person, but he did have to pick up his luggage like everyone else. Just didn’t have to hang around since first class are allowed disembark shortly after landing.

      • Nyawira says:

Colin Firth is nowhere near someone like Johnny Depp. He is hardly fanned over outside of women of a certain age. And even then, his fanbase is more …..staid. Johnny would cause pandemonium regardless of what measures you throw in because his is proper Movie Star fame. People get starstruck over people like him or Tom Cruise not Paul Betthany and Colin Firth. And thanks to his Disney stint it is cross gender and cross generational. Let Johnny have this one. It’s better for everyone that he just fly private

  7. jannab says:

him flying commercial would be a nightmare, to be fair… i was on a flight with a celebrity once, an athlete, and we were delayed for well over an hour because nearly everyone who boarded just had to come by and talk to them. it was honestly a sh!t show. i can’t imagine how awful it would be for everyone involved if it’d been johnny depp.

    • STRIPE says:

Yea, Im not going to fault him here. Being famous is great in a lot of ways- you have access to a lot of money and other privileges- but your privacy is GONE. It’s probably exhausting and, as you mentioned, a hinderance for everyone else in a situation like this, too.

    • CooCoo Catchoo says:

A friend sat next to JD on a commercial red-eye from Dallas to LA about 20 years ago. They chatted and she didn’t recognize him – until he introduced himself. He said that he loved not being recognized because it allowed him to be more “real” with strangers. Anyhoo, she scored a VIP invite to the Viper Club and said that he was super nice, and super interested when he found out she was a songwriter.

      • Ain'tNoTelling says:

@coocoo catchoo: I knew Johnny 20 years ago and beforehand, and all I’ve gotta say is that the Johnny we see today is NOTHING like the Johnny I knew back then.

  8. third ginger says:

“Oh, what a falling off was there.” to quote Shakespeare. This man was once a truly interesting actor. See ED WOOD, if you haven’t. The “bubble” killed him, and he aided and abetted it.

    • lucy2 says:

I used to be such a fan, he made really interesting choices, and the first Pirates movie was really fun. But wow, he has fallen so far.

  9. khaleesi says:

lololol wearing that target Johnny Cash shirt that I own and love. only good thing about this entire story.

  10. J Debt says:

He is disgusting, so full of himself and his family and close friends support him behaving like a drunk idiot brat.
He and his inner circle showed how messed up they really are when they make a case in tmz court against Amber heard, it was disgusting the way he was paying trash media to bad mouth her allegations and the court documents ( also legal proofs that they couldn’t fight against like medical exams and videos).
So I think that he deserves every bad luck that karma will put on his way.
By the way he looks awful.

  11. Routh says:

To tell the truth,it would indeed be a nightmare for both him and the other passengers due to the attention he would get, especially in 2009 but right now too nonetheless. These emails do prove that he knew about his money troubles however I have two issues.First, they are 8 years old for god’s shake. It looks like the problem was kinda sorted out back then but things got worse after 2012 so,don’t they have more recent emails?Lot of things could have happened till now so for me these emails are semi relevant due to their age.Second I still see nothing regarding TMG taking advantage of or stealing money from him.
Regarding his appearance yeah it’s over the top nothing new.I believe that the guitar was maybe given to him by someone afterwards cause I saw a video and he wasn’t holding it when he entered the airport.

  12. lucy2 says:

I have no issue with someone that famous flying private (other than environmental impact) for security reasons, and someone earning $20 million a film usually could afford that. It flat out amazes me though that someone earning THAT much was able to overspend, and not just a little. $40 million in debt is insane.

  13. ELX says:

I have to say I really object to the constant knee-jerk supposition that the advisors were “shady” or skimmed for themselves when there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that they did anything wrong. This is an a**hole client who doesn’t want to be responsible for his behavior and actions, pure and simple. How surprising! Curious: How much of his wealth has evaporated into his drug habit? As Chris Rock has said–one bad summer and a drug habit away from broke.

    • Well said says:

This abusive drunk is an asshole in real life, that is circled by Yes people and is full of himself. Just read some of his interviews where he said that a photoshoot is like being raped, or how he defends Roman Polanski or how he bought a 5 million cannon to shot ashes of his dead friend.
He is a mess that thinks he is the best thing on earth.
Imagine managers saying to him to save money and not waste on silly thing or addictions, he never listen to anyone.

  14. lunchcoma says:

I can understand not flying commercial in his case. What he could have done, though, is fly less often, restricting his flights to those needed for promotion or filming rather than popping up all over the world.

  15. LAK says:

I feel like this article needs to be required reading for how JD’s money woes manifested.
    http://nymag.com/thejob/2017/04/the-accountant-who-tries-to-keep-celebrities-from-going-broke.html

What is really interesting is that JD’s sister was apparently helping herself to millions of his money yet JD is accusing the managers without censure of his sister nor is he rubbting that part of the msnagers’ accusation.

  16. Shirurusu says:

Well, it is his money, and I wouldn’t want to be on a commercial flight in his shoes. Actually I wouldn’t want to be on a commercial flight at all unless I really had to these days, flying has become a sh-t show of angry security, over taxed terminals and greedy airlines. Alas what can you do without a private jet? 😉

On another note, Johnny Depps public midlife crisis must be one of the most painful falls from grace I’ve ever seen. I was never a huge fan of his but seeing the crazy crap he did to Amber, his horrible personal choices the last five + years and him ageing thirty years in five and trying to be a musician again ?? He has two kids for christ sakes if I were them I’d be embarrassed as all hell :/ Seems like he doesn’t know who he is anymore.

  17. Luci Lu says:

He used to be so handsome. Not only are drugs and alcohol bad for your health….they make you ugly.

  18. Double standards says:

IN the lawsuit the TMG firm talked about how he abused Amber heard, cited some occasions and the witness that were forced to lie to cover his arse.
Funny how no media reported that part because it is easy to write about his finances mess but totally ignore that he is an abuser and that Hollywood manchineel covers for him all the time.
