Halsey: Iggy Azalea is a ‘f–king moron’ with a ‘complete disregard for black culture’

Halsey speaks at the 2017 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity

I generally don’t think about Halsey, and on the rare occasion when I do come across a Halsey story, I don’t really have an opinion either way. I think she has terrible style. I think she comes across as haughty for no real reason. But I also think she works, and she’s out there doing her thing and why not? I actually like a few of her songs, come to think of it. Anyway, Halsey has an interview with the Guardian about her new album (Now or Never) and I’m sure a lot of it would be more scandalous if I had been paying attention to Halsey’s history of picayune pop music beefs. Still, there’s some good stuff in here. Some highlights:

People don’t know the real Halsey: “Everyone thinks they know what’s going on in my life, because they read it on the internet. I’ll buy a table at a restaurant, I’ll buy bottles, I’ll pay for everyone, then we’ll go to the movies. People I barely know. I’m trying to make friends, I’m trying to get to know people. Nobody says thank you because they’re like: ‘Ashley has money.’ I used to be this social queen. I could go anywhere, make anyone like me, go to any party, talk to anybody. I used to have no shame in walking up to someone on a plane or train and sitting down and chatting to them. I used to just talk. I used to be obsessed with people; now, I’m terrified of them.”

Whether she was telling the truth about being homeless:
“I get it all the time. People say: ‘How could you be homeless, you were a One Direction fan?!’ It’s like, can’t you be both? Everyone wants to pick on me all the time. What do I have to do, an Excel page with a f–king timeline of my life, just so you guys will give me some credibility?”

Living with a heroin addict as a teenager: “The dark part of it was when I was living with a heroin addict and not speaking to my family. People might say it doesn’t ‘count’, but it counted to me. Thinking all my friends were going to die and being by myself and being terrified. It was easily the darkest time of my life. The one thing I was doing was maintain my persona online. I never let anyone know I didn’t have a home. If there’s one thing I was smart about at the time, it was knowing that if I wanted to be a musician, I needed to keep up my appearance.”

On her early songs disrespecting Taylor Swift for dating Harry Styles: “I understand it was pack mentality, and knowing that in stirring up that discourse we would all be on the same side about it, which is exactly what people do to me now. When you hate someone’s girlfriend or brother, or hate another band, that’s a gang mentality. People would rather talk together about something they hate than something they all love. And that’s so blatantly clear in our nation at the moment. People in political parties are stans: they sit online, they wait to see anyone who’s going to say something bad about their favourite, and they f–king trash them. They direct hate at any opposer. The political parties have literally turned into fandoms.”

On Iggy Azalea: “There’s a lot of people I wouldn’t put on my record. Iggy Azalea: absolutely not. She had a complete disregard for black culture. F–king moron. I watched her career dissolve and it fascinated me.”

[From The Guardian]

I actually think that observation about stans and fandoms in politics is an astute way to understand our current political landscape, and she makes a valid point. She’s an intelligent young woman, even if… I don’t know, parts of her story don’t exactly make sense. But I’m not going to overanalyze it. It’s funny to me that she tries to take the high road and then slips in that utter disrespect for Iggy Azalea (who, let’s face it, deserves it). Iggy has already said some sh-t in reaction to Halsey, telling People Mag: “I don’t know her. I’ve never met her. To me, because I’m a famous person and I know a lot of the time people have opinions and they’re not always accurate, I really try very hard not to give my personal opinions about people that I don’t know.” Yeah. Halsey never said that she knew Iggy. Halsey just said she’s a culturally appropriating jackass.

What else? If you don’t know the backstory on the Halsey-Taylor Swift thing, go here for some history. When Halsey was a teenager, she wrote diss-songs about Taylor for dating Harry Styles. Now Halsey claims it’s all “water under the bridge.” Yeah right. Just wait until Taylor devotes a song to you, Halsey.

I don’t know much about Halsey, but it looks like she stirs the pot a lot. And she’s smart, but maybe not nice.

When someone publicly aknowledges that they understand the need for branding, and talks about image like she does,I have a hard time not thinking what we see is manufactured.

And the songs were kind of lady hating, about how Taylor ruins men.

  2. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

Halsey seems exhausting to be around.

She is intelligent and is making a few interesting points, but then she goes and ruins it by complaining about being somewhat famous. It irks me when people write or say “you don’t know anything about me” because it is not really true. No, we don’t know EVERYTHING about her, but, if she writes her own songs we do get a glimpse into her world and how she feels about certain situations. We also get to know a little more about her in her interviews when she is promoting her albums or tours.

I just looked it up and she is 22 so I will give her a pass for being kind of obnoxious. We all were at that age. Don’t deny it.

Hopefully she will age out of it and not turn into Kelly Osbourne.

Also, there was not one lie told about Igloo.

    • teacakes says:

Pretty much. If she’s still pulling this nonsense past the age of 25, then we can talk.

I like that she admits to branding/persona being a thing and that it played into the way she portrayed herself online when she didn’t have a home , though. At least she’s honest about it, unlike the other ‘I’m so authentic’ social media pop stars.

    • denisemich says:

She reminds me of Pink in her 20s and her music is good. Yup she is someone you know is an exhausting friend. I wonder how often she gets her meds adjusted. Hard to tell if this is youth or an imbalance.

  3. Alp says:

Didn’t she say that about Iggy (not that I’m defending her) to deflect on her comments about Migos?

  4. justcrimmles says:

I’d never heard her music until yesterday, oddly enough. I really like the song “Alone.” And it seems to very much be in line with what she says regarding her interactions with others.

  5. Flufff says:

I don’t know who she is but I like her. But oh, poor girl, please don’t try to buy friends.

  6. Shijel says:

She’s keen and she’s right about many things, but her delivery speaks of a person who’s pretty nasty to be around once the shine comes off. Know a lot of those, smart and observant, but vitriolic.

  7. Shambles says:

This is one of the most annoying interviews I’ve ever read.

And Iggy Azalea still thinks she’s famous?

    • Kitten says:

      Hahahahaha…MTE, Shamby.

She’s 22 so I’ll giver her a pass but good grief is she annoying.

ETA: Annoying but totally right about Iggy

Lol the Iggy diss is the only thing I care about and it was so smooth. Loved it. And iggy doesn’t have a career so she can exit with her attempt at Mariah level shade. You’re not famous enough for that diva attitude.
Also this was a reminder of how happy I am that Iggy is not out here jacking black culture with her whack rhymes in 2017.

  9. FishBeard says:

Valid argument against Iggy. That aside, she’s irksome. Definitely the face of the tumblr generation.

  10. Luca76 says:

One thing to note about Halsey she is mixed race eventhough it’s not something you guess right away so I think the Iggy stuff is coming from a genuine place.

  11. The New Classic says:

I’m a huge fan of Titanic Sinclair and all I really know about Halsey is how he dragged her on Twitter. But then again, he loves starting social media beef and it seems like she put herself right in his crosshairs to get called out by him.
She seems smart but obnoxious? I’ve heard a couple of her songs and thought they werent really anything special, but she gave my baby BØRNS an opening act gig on one of her recent tours so I guess I’m willing to give her a pass. She’s spot on about Iggy Azelia though. Watching her career implode was fascinating.

  12. Magnoliarose says:

If you still have angsty journals from your youngin’ years go have a look and you will cringe as she will in 10 years. But you are supposed to be figuring yourself out at her age so I have no beef with her. At least she shaded a person who deserves it.

  13. Radley says:

I think the fact that she’s a little all over the place actually speaks to her genuineness. If she were the slick product of record company focus groups her answers would be more congruent and polished.

I think she is smart and she will evolve. Also I do appreciate that she owns her mixed race identity rather than attempt to “pass” for white until she is “exposed” and/or hits a rough patch like Mariah.

    • DeniseMich says:

@ Radely, the statements about Mariah are harsh.

I wish the reason people wanted to understand someone’s ethnic identity was for commiseration but it is really more of a hater thing.

Mariah, for the most part, was not raised by her father. While she is genetically mixed race, she refuses to quantify her “blackness”. As someone who is a few years younger than her a native from NY and fair, I understand why.

In NY you weren’t either black or white enough and so you didn’t fit anywhere. If Mariah had said she was black when she first came out it would have been like oh girl is trying too hard.
      It is a difficult road.
Halsey probably had an easier go of it. More children were mixed in the 00s and less people bucketed them.

      • Radley says:

It’s my opinion. And it stands.

What’s harsh (or foolish) is trying to lecture a mixed race person from a broken home married to a mixed race native New Yorker about the nuance of racial identity. You tried it.

Keep stanning though. Support your girl. I’m not mad at that.

  14. Ames10 says:

Just an FYI, her album is called “hopeless fountain kingdom”!

  15. shanaynay says:

    Who is she?

    • Scotchy says:

Agreed, why is she trying to be a thing??? And why is she so sure her career isn’t going to eventually dissolve??

So strange these lil poplettes these days.. they are a dime a dozen.. Oh well..

  16. Littlestar says:

She’s right about Iggy, although Iggy is racist all around seeing as her past tweets disparage not only black people but Asians and Mexicans.

  17. Erica_V says:

All I know is the backing of her current single on the radio is a clear rip off of Rihanna’s “Needed Me”. It’s a good jam but still.
