The best part of the BET Awards: Joe Budden & Migos almost got into a fight

The 2017 BET Awards were kind of a snooze from a fashion perspective and an awards perspective. Kendrick Lamar won big, Beyonce won big, Solange didn’t thank Beyonce (ha), Remy Ma “dethroned” Nicki Minaj as Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Chance won Best New Artist (he’s been around for years?). Our coverage of the BET Awards will be limited because there really wasn’t a huge moment from the actual show. Thankfully, there was a huge moment during the preshow. The moment involved the group Migos versus DJ Akademiks and Joe Budden. I didn’t realize that Joe Budden was/is a thing, but he is – he’s a former (?) hip-hop artist turned reality star turned Complex interviewer/journalist/personality. He was part of the crew doing red carpet interviews on Complex’s live coverage. Budden, DJ Akademiks and the Everyday Struggle crew were trying to interview the guys from Migos when it all went sideways. Here’s the video:

DJ Akademiks says to Takeoff: “I feel like this is like a running joke, with you being left off ‘Bad and Boujee.” Takeoff: “You said I’m left off ‘Bad and Boujee?’ Does it look like I’m left off ‘Bad and Boujee?’” This continues for a moment and then Joe Budden says dismissively, “Alright, we gotta wrap this up though,” then drops his mic and walks away. The Migos guys stand up in unison and then security is called and it seems like some sh-t was just about to go down in a big way.

Budden’s been tweeting about the confrontation too, because of course he has?

And for much of last night and this morning, Joe Budden and Migos were trending on Twitter as everybody had an opinion on Budden (“drama queen”) and Migos (??).

  2. QQ says:

Joe Budden is a Failed, Gf Beating Bitter Betty, Mind you im side eyeing The Migos for Other Reasons, but being sartorially forward or “doing better than me” is not one of them reasons… which is basically what you can amount Joe’s consistent Bitterness at seeing young cats doing better than him and living stress free- care free Black men Lives ( see: Yatchy.. That MF almost had an aneurysm cause Yatchy was happy)

P.S.: Come On Now Solange on Her Own Created a Work that will stand up there with the Greatest Black Music of all Time in A Seat at The Table ( Don’t @ me, this isn’t controvertible facts just ” cause you didn’t listen to it” She Did that herself, she presents that as Art in Museums, Don’t please act like she Owes her sister Public Obeisance In Perpetuity or else “they are mad at each other”

    • Nicole says:

This QQ! Joe is such a loser it’s sad. He’s always inserting himself where no one sent for him. Joe have a seat your love and hip hop days are over

      • QQ says:

Honestly.. If his sh*t was any good we’d known him for more than Pump It Up, Beating Women, Hating on more successful people and being the Head Contrarian of Hotep Adjacent Twitter

    • Ccinkissimmee says:

Thanks QQ.. I’d also like to add that New Edition reunited last night and so did Xscape! That may not mean much to the people here at Celeb***hy but it meant a lot to me.

    • Cherise says:

I have no time for JB but Takeoff was being a silly diva. It IS a running joke that he isnt on their biggest song except for the background wooping. He was being asked to comment on the memes and there are hundreds of smart ways to have done so. Ls for all.

As for Solange, everybody knows she and her sis are besties. She just wants to have her moments not to be consumed by “Solange tearfully credits sister for her win” headlines. Unfortunately now her moment is being stolen with “Solange fails to thank sis, is there beef between them?”. Poor girl cant just have her moment.

      • QQ says:

YES YES YES everything you said about Solange!, you’d think at least 3 cds and change of pure Actual Brilliance would free her up of this whole “is she riding her sister coattails”/”She should thank her sister”/Are they mad.. Her art is her art and Beyonce’s is Beyonce’s that sh*t must be so so chaffing

  3. Maria F. says:

i am a bit relieved to see that the interviewer also did not understand Takeoff. Does he mumble like that on the tracks too?

    Twitter was hilarious re this.

  4. I have literally heard of NONE of these people.

    • oce says:

Well, that is likely b/c mainstream network channels don’t cover ANY of these people. Which is why the Black Entertainment Television station was created in the first place. You are now able to watch the channel anytime you want and hear about them 24/7.

      • QQ says:

AMEN!, Let’s copy and Paste this comment all over the Thread TBH cause I’m expecting at least 20 more of the same tut tutting comments, beside the “Well we don’t have White Entertainment TV” and then Im Gonna refer them to “Solange’s Tina Taught Me” for a Handy Primer

    • YepIsaidit says:

      Good for you.

      • Anna says:

@Marlam Xscape and New Edition reuniting were two kind of incredible things but of course they’re only going to feature a “fight” between two black artists lol
Also pretending like Joe Budden is an unknown is kind of neglectful? I can’t stand the man but he’s been making news in Hip Hip and with Black artists for years now and writing about him could’ve brought some interesting stories.

Anyway, if you want to talk about fights, you should talk about Chris Brown trying to fight Quavo because he’s dating Karrueche now.

    • Stacey Dresden says:

Well take a look at the number of YouTube hits.

  5. YepIsaidit says:

Joe budden is a woman beater.

  6. MissAmanda says:

I can’t believe how easily the men in this video were ready to physically assault each other…and for what? And at a public event, and being recorded…

And the guy in white is what? Just throwing a mini-hissy-fit on camera because he doesn’t want to be there anymore? so confused.

  7. AlmondJoy says:

Actually, the BEST parts of the BET Awards was the New Edition tribute, Chance The Rapper being given the humanitarian award, Solange winning and the moment of silence for our fellow black brothers and sisters who were killed at the hands of the police.

Focus on the Joe Budden/Migos drama if you want 🙃 It happened after the show ended. If you think that was the best part I’ll assume you didn’t watch it.

    • QQ says:

WHELP!! Say it! (you don’t see me but my fist is UP!) Can we Discuss the amounts of Fortifying Black Boy Joy that Chance brings?? like it fills my Tank of Happiness RIGHT ON UP!

      • AlmondJoy says:

Oh I can see you! I had tears in my eyes watching that young man he makes me so happy and proud. This is the #BlackBoyJoy I wanna see discussed early on on Monday morning. Uplift me!

Also the cast of Girls’ Trip had me ROLLIN. Chloe and Halle reading Beyoncé’s acceptance speech was EPIC. So many great moments.

      • oce says:

@AlmondJoy , @QQ and @MarlaM above – I wish there was a like button under ALL of your comments.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Thanks, OCE! This awards so so amazing so I’m annoyed that it’s been relegated to some dumb fight. There was so much talent and heart in the building.

      • Radley says:

Yes, Chance deserves a better write-up. He’s awesome. Joe Budden is old news. Migos are the “it” guys of the moment. They’ve been hot since “Versace” with Drake and went supernova when Donald Glover shouted out “Bad and Bougee” at the Golden Globes. It’s one of the biggest hits of the year.

This is a pop culture website but some of us are only interested in a certain segments of pop culture. Interesting but also unsurprising.

      • AlmondJoy says:

        *Radley

        Sorry about that! Dumb autocorrect

    • Ayra. says:

Yess! That New Edition tribute was amazing.

Chance winning the Humanitarian award made me so happy, he’s so young but he has done 10x more than other artists. He deserved that, especially since his music is FREE.

Chloe and Halle have speaking voices that sound like bells chiming.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Ayra YES!! Chance really deserved it. And my babies killed that NE tribute! And how did I forget the Xscape performance?! Chloe and Halle: young queens.

      • Ayra. says:

Black Twitter’s shade towards Kandi while she was singing was hilarious.

But anyway, this “fight”, beef, whatever.. was definitely not the best part of the Bet awards and if they watched it, they would have known.

    • New_Kay says:

      THANK YOU AlmondJoy!

    • Krunch says:

Future and Kendrick? Also a highlight for me. I dose on and off during the awards(because I’m sick) and every time I woke up there was something worthwhile happening.

      • AlmondJoy says:

Krunch so true.. I almost passed out when Kendrick showed up. How could I forget?! He elevated that song. And I hope you feel better!

  8. The New Classic says:

Came in here gleefully cause I thought it was Migos v. Joe BIDEN. I was so ready for the explanation of how that could be a thing that happened. Then as I read I came to the realization that Joe BUDDEN is in fact a man that exists and isn’t the former VP of the US. I’m mildly disappointed. 😕

  9. Grandmasutra says:

BET awards was televised on MTV and VH1 and had some pretty dope performances. I honestly try to watch every year, I feel unnecessary shade towards this program. I enjoyed the tributes especially to George Michael. There were beautiful women and talented performers in one night. The writer if you don’t have a taste or appreciation for it, let someone else write about it.

  10. Krunch says:

I can’t believe CB is covering my boy DJ Akademiks! Joe Budden is a sucka for real, last week one of the guest threatened to punch AK in the face and Joe just sat there and ganged up on AK instead of standing up his cohost. Ugh F Joe.

  11. Cici says:

Why even write anything about the BET awards at all, if you thought this was best thing of the night. I watched it on and off, because I was only interested in seeing Bruno Mars, Big Sean, and New Edition’s lifetime achievement award. All of which were great. Also the humanitarian award to Chance the Rapper was also fantastic moment. An almost fight with bunch of idiots shouldn’t have been worth your effort.

    • AlmondJoy says:

      Exactly.

“Our coverage of the BET Awards will be limited because there really wasn’t a huge moment from the actual show.” This KILLED me. A lie if I ever read one. There were so many big moments.

  12. Twink says:

Migos are so homophobic, just look up the several comments they’ve made.
