Serena Williams & Alexis Ohanian’s love story covers the new issue of VF

Serena Williams is enjoying her downtime off the tour, after inadvertently announcing her pregnancy a few months ago. She’s been traveling and vacationing, she’s been announcing new business ventures and she’s been watching her sister and her friends play on the tour. She also took the time to pose for the latest issue of Vanity Fair. Serena recreates – with her own spin – the iconic Demi Moore-pregnancy cover, and you can see all of the Annie Leibovitz photos here at VF. In addition to the naked-bump photos, Serena also did a series of photos with her fiance Alexis Ohanian. The VF article is all about their love story too, which is amazing, and a great read. What comes through is that Alexis is SO into her. He’s been into her from the very beginning, and Serena allows him to be into her. Some highlights from the story:

Alexis had never even been a tennis fan: Alexis had never seen a tennis match until he met Serena, in May of 2015 in Rome. He says he “never watched a match on television or in real life. It was literally the sport—even if ESPN was announcing tennis updates, I would just zone out. . . . I really had no respect for tennis.”

When Serena decided to take the pregnancy test: After playing poorly in her first match of the year, in which she felt she had missed too many backhands, she went to the practice court and for two and a half to three hours hit 2,500 of them, by her estimation. If she missed one, she started over. She did roughly the same the next practice day. But she felt a little different physically. She had unexpectedly thrown up at one point and her breasts had enlarged. She thought it might be hormonal. But her friend Jessica Steindorff immediately suspected something else and suggested a pregnancy test. Serena thought it was ludicrous. Jessica worked on her for two days until Serena relented, and so Jessica went to a pharmacy and bought a pregnancy kit. “I’ll take it just because (a) to prove you wrong and (b) because it’s fun, whatever. It’s like a joke. Why not?”

Taking the test: That Friday, as Serena was doing her hair and makeup for an event sponsored by the lingerie company Berlei, where she is a spokesperson for its line of sports bras, she took the test in the bathroom. “I put it down. I went back to finishing hair and makeup, was laughing, talking. I was getting the styling done. An hour and a half later, I went back to the bathroom and I totally forgot about it because it was impossible for me. . . . So I went back to get dressed and I went back in the bathroom and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, that test.’ ” Jessica shrieked in delight at the results. Serena, as she put it, “did a double take and my heart dropped. Like literally it dropped. “Oh my God, this can’t be—I’ve got to play a tournament,” said Serena. “How am I going to play the Australian Open? I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year.”

How pregnant was Serena during the Australian Open? The Australian Open was about to begin, and an immediate medical determination had to be made on what risk there might be in playing. The doctor who examined her thought she was about three or four weeks pregnant—it was almost impossibly hard to tell because the fetus was so small—and said there was no risk whatsoever. When Serena returned to the States and had a subsequent exam, it was discovered that she had actually been more advanced, about seven to eight weeks, but she said she still would have played. There were only five people who knew during the tournament: Alexis, Jessica, Jill, Venus, and the doctor. Not even Serena’s coach knew. Nor did tournament officials.

She still doesn’t know what to make of it: “it just doesn’t seem real. I don’t know why. Am I having a baby? If you would have told me last year in October or November that I would have a baby, not be pregnant but have a baby, I would have thought you were the biggest liar in the world. This is kind of how I am right now. This is happening sooner than later, and it’s going by so fast… I don’t know what to do with a baby. I have nothing. . . . I’ve done absolutely nothing for the baby room.”

The marriage: Alexis is looking forward to the marriage. Serena, with tongue floating somewhere in cheek, says, “I’m trying to enjoy the little freedom I have left.”

[From Vanity Fair]

I love that one of Serena’s first thoughts, upon realizing that she was knocked up, was “but I was going to win Wimbledon this year!” Serena also admits that she realized her people were manipulating her to go to Rome last year just so Alexis could propose to her. Like, she knew she was about to be proposed to and she had to hype herself up for it and give herself a pep talk. It’s amazing. Anyway, this whole article is a complete joy. I think it’s great that Serena ended up with a guy who basically fell for her at first sight.

    Alexis is one lucky man.

    • INeedANap says:

I love — LOVE — that the founder of Reddit of all things ended up marrying a powerful (and powerfully built) black woman with more cultural cache than him, and that he seemingly digs the arrangement.

Occasionally the universe throws us a bone. Blessed be to all three of them.

    • M4lificent says:

It takes a real man to totally appreciate that he is with a goddess.

  2. SaraR. says:

    Nice! Good luck Serena!

  3. Tiffany says:

The body, even pregnant, my goodness it and she is stunning on the cover.

    • GiBee says:

I would have said that the Demi Moore style preggo photo should be retired forever – but Serena has redeemed it. What a babe.

    • StartupSpouse says:

She is simply stunning. Everything about her is beautiful. I have such a girl crush.

  4. Ghost says:

I hate naked bump photos. I know it’s supposed to be wonderful and magical and all that jazz, but pregnant bellies just make me uncomfortable.
And the black and white couple photos woth the eyes closed are cheesy. I’m getting married this fall and I don’t know how we’re going to do the lovey dovey photos without cracking up.

    • Millenial says:

I love them. I think Serena looks beautiful and strong and amazing! It’s a body. Everyone has a body. Everyone was born once. Pregnant bodies shouldn’t be kept hidden because they make people uncomfortable.

    • susanne says:

You can make funny faces for the photographer. Then he/she will catch the two of you giving eachother the Look of Love when you least expect it. You’ll cherish both!
      Wish you the best.

    • brooksie says:

I just got my wedding photos back and I was worried some would be cheesy but she really caught the best moments! Some poses do feel awkward but the love you have for your husband will radiate and show in the pics!

    • Robin says:

Seriously. Billions of women have been pregnant. And far too many women have done the cheesy Demi Moore pose. Why do people like Moore and Williams think we all want to see it?

      • bananapanda says:

Actually the Demi Moore pics were taken just for her. Annie L. took some extra frames and when the contact sheet came back everyone gravitated to it. It was a happy accident.

  5. Y says:

Yayyyyy to the both of them ❤️

  6. dodgy says:

That was a nice read. They both found each other at the time of their lives when they were ready for each other. So… no snark from me! I ain’t mad at all.

  7. Aims says:

Congratulations to the happy couple ! ! I have a feeling that baby is going to be beautiful .

This is such a well done editorial, they look amazing, and Serena is glowing.

  11. Spittair says:

God, I love this so much. She looks great and he seems smitten and proud to be with her.

  12. Amelie says:

I also like he didn’t give two hoots about tennis. I’m not a huge tennis fan either but I respect the amount of training and dedication any athlete gives to their sport. I’m sure he knew who she was but since he didn’t really care about tennis, he wasn’t some fan boy trying to impress her. I’m guessing he’s changed his mind now haha.

  13. Eva says:

Ok, they’re officially my new favorite couple.

Remember when Serena was dating Drake? 😀 And now she’s pregnant and getting married to this wonderful normal-seeming guy. Things can change so fast.

  14. Reece says:

I’m gonna buy the hard copy because I want to support happy stories like this being put out into the world.

  15. Cherise says:

I looooooooooooove it. And since I am that inappropriate matchmaking busybody, I am already setting this baby up with one of the Carter-Knowles babies. Prince Ginge and Meg need to hurry up so I can have more to work with (IF they choose to have kids of course)

  16. Who ARE These People? says:

We should all marry a Serena Williams who inspires us to be our best selves. He’s so crushing on her, it’s great.

  17. Livealot says:

    That bottom photo – 😍💣

  18. Radley says:

Good for both of them. Lucky kid.

  19. Freddy Spaghetti says:

Wow, he is so crazy into her, as he should be. Lucky guy and she will be back by January. She is, imo, the greatest tennis player ever.

  20. DesertReal says:

Love, love, everything about this couple.
The extemporaneous I pregnancy, the appreciation and sweet sweet adoration from the dude, the strong ambitious beautiful woman beside (and in front of him).
Love it! I’m so excited for this couple and the beautiful little baby they bring into this world.

  21. Kilo Tango says:

I love ‘I planned on winning Wimbledon this year’ like the rest of us plan on popping out to the shops or plan on doing that pile of paperwork. Oh me? I was just going to win some major sporting event you know, no biggie. What an inspiration – the woman is a total boss!

  22. Andie88 says:

They look beautiful!! Congratulations to Serena. She’s always been a great role model and now she’s a gorgeous momma to be. Awesome they were able to find each other. He’s cute and smart.
