Star: Deep in debt Tori Spelling could end up in jail if she committed fraud

torispellingstarmag
Star Magazine features Tori Spelling on the cover of their current issue, above, which I didn’t realize until I actually saw it in the grocery store. I got excited thinking Star might have some new information on Tori’s extensive debt and perhaps some pending legal issues. As you know, Tori owes tens of thousands in loans, in credit card debt and to the state of California and US government in back taxes. She’s facing several court cases and her bank account has been seized by the IRS.

Unlike the Teresa and Joe Giudice case, however, we do not yet know if Tori and her husband, Dean McDermott, committed tax or wire fraud and they haven’t been charged with anything like that. The Guidices went to prison for committing fraud, not for being in debt per se, so their case is different. Star doesn’t have much new information on Tori, but they do consult an expert who speculates that she could go to jail if she committed tax fraud. The expert makes it sound more likely that Dean could go to jail for nonpayment of child support. How often does that happen though? Plus I think if it gets to that Tori will find a way to weasel out of it. Star doesn’t have much that’s new, but they do add a lot of background details that I’ve missed or forgotten, like the fact that Tori’s new rental home has a sauna because of course it does. They also remind us that Tori could call on her mom, Candy, to bail her out and that she’s trying to do that. I think her fifth baby, born this March, was part of that plan.

It appears Tori and Dean’s mounting financial problems have reached the critical zero hour. “All their debts, which just keep growing and growing, have put them so deep in the hole that it seems there may be no way out,” an insider says. “But what’s truly scary is how much they owe the government. Having their money actually seized shows just how serious their problems are. Tori’s running out of options, and the walls are closing in.” The situation is so dire, sources insist, the mom of five could find herself serving time behind bars…

What it would take for Tori to go to jail
After years of out of control spending, however, the clock may be finally running out on Tori’s reckless ways, with the various entities demanding that she make good on what she owes. “Should Spelling continue to default on paying back the back loan in full, plus interest, the courts have discretion on punishments in situations like that,” NY-based criminal attorney Brooke Camhi tells Star. “While not the likely outcome, jail time certainly would be an option afforded to the court. At the moment this is not a criminal case. But if there is any kind of fraud happening, Tori could do time…”

Dean could go to jail for nonpayment of child support
Dean [has been found in contempt of court in his child support case with ex-wife, Mary Jo Eustace]. “He might have weaseled his way out of jail the first time, but if he doesn’t pay Mary Jo wahat he promised, he could still wind up behind bars…”

Tori is begging her mom for money
“Candy pays [Tori’s] rent, private school tuition for the kids and even stepped up after Tori maxed out her credit cards to buy groceries… I hear that Tori’s been begging Candy for a $700,000 loan to cover her debts, but she hasn’t agreed to that yet.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition, July 3, 2017]

It’s not surprising that Tori didn’t get the reality show she was hoping for, and even if she did you know she would blow that money promptly as well. She has a spending addiction that she’s admitted to but never addressed. She’s deep in denial and thinks that she’s owed her lifestyle. In her mind, given the way she grew up, she’s probably downsized quite a bit. She’ll tell you she shops too much but she’s refused to reign in her spending. It’s like they say about addiction, she’s got to lose it all before she makes a change.

At least she still gets Instagram endorsement deals. Also, she’s not a good advertisement for that sarong she made into a top (below). I bet it looks even worse when she stands up.

Oh look, she wore a Chanel cuff to Wonder Woman. If that’s authentic she could get at least $500 for it on eBay.

If Tori and Jennie are besties, it makes me think that Jennie has completely hit rock bottom.

Also, Tori didn’t use #ad in that post.

    • Radley says:

I don’t think it’s cool to abandon a friend when they hit the skids. Tori may be a lovely person who just has a dysfunctional relationship with money which has caused a number of poor life choices. Lots of people have that problem. Anyway, none of that is a reflection on Jennie per se. She seems to lay low and have a grip on her finances.

      • Bridget says:

Tori and Jennie were never really close to begin with. Jennie only got close to Tori after her friendship with Tiffani Thiessen fell apart (and those two were super tight), a few years ago, and it would seem that Tori is the only replacement left in Jennie’s midlife crisis years.

      • holly hobby says:

Yep Tori and Jennie were just super bitchy in that last RuPaul Drag race episode about Tiffani. I think there’s an article about that here too. I don’t have cable so I just read the article. Jennie is not nice.

  2. Radley says:

She needs Iyanla to fix her life.

  3. Mia4s says:

THAT’s the best photo she could get of the kids?!? Could they look more miserable? Yikes.

  4. Honey says:

Good. Go to jail. Why shouldn’t they get punished just because they’re famous?

  5. HeidiM says:

I feel bad for all those children. I don’t even think jail would wake up their mother.

  6. Lucy says:

Staycation at a resort??!!! When you’re that deep in debt??!!!! They are both horrible human beings, I am so angry that people like them get away with this type of sh*t!

  7. Zapp Brannigan says:

Candy needs to not bail her out, let her hit rock bottom.

Anyone know if its true that Tori has storage units full of stuff that she just hoards, maybe start by selling that. And then something radical like get a job.

    • Brandi says:

I was just wondering if she still has that stuff. I remember Tori talking about that years ago when I used to watch her reality shows.

  8. Ruyana says:

Tori has been doing this for decades – spending what she doesn’t have to spend. Buying just to fill paid storage or to appear to be wealthy when she’s not. It’s like a form of mental illness and as long as she gets a pass she’ll just keep going. I’ve read before that she says things like “my father wouldn’t want me to economize”. Yeah, well, sorry, but your daddy is dead and his income stream along with him. HE was wealthy, YOU are not. She really needs to suffer the consequences. She didn’t get to this state because of things she *had* to spend for, like a child’s illness or something. She just feels entitled to indulge her every whim, and she will keep going until something stops her.

  9. JaneDoesWork says:

The only show i would watch Tori on at this point is if she went to counseling for her spending addiction. Sort of like A&E’s Hoarders… which I think we’ve also heard she has a problem with. Girl has warehouses full of furniture and other crap.

    • GingerCrunch says:

THAT would be endlessly fascinating. Not to let her off the hook, but I bet her childhood really was a bit of a mindf#%k. I’d like to hear the details, but then I’m extremely nosy.

  10. SoulSPA says:

She needs mental care and some coaching ASAP.

  11. KBeth says:

They are such losers. The baby is cute.

  12. Menutia says:

I couldn’t live like that. So stressful!!!! But then again, I am always trying desperately to get rid of stuff and live on less (hard to do when you have young kids- toys and clutter accumulate), so I think I’d thrive on a strict budget.

  13. Babs says:

Poor Beau Dean looks so much like Dean, it’s borderline creepy.

    • Datura says:

I read a book about Tori. She admits she’s a shop a holic and she has no concept of money. When she was growing up she was closer to her Nanny than she was her to her Mother. Her Mother was having an affair on Aaron with a so called family friend named Mark and Tori knew about this which drove an even bigger wedge between them. When Aaron died Tori found out thru her friends that her Father had passed. Tori and her brother Randy were always close but her Mother was not a good influence in her life . Her Mother did come to the hospital when she had her first child by Dean. But I don’t know if they’re still close today.

    • holly hobby says:

All the kids look like him. It appears his genes are stronger than hers!

  14. yuck says:

While I have little sympathy with the out-of-control spending, it seems to me that the banks that afforded her such substantial credit, on little evidence of earnings, probably did so on the strength of Candy’s balance sheet, not Tori’s or Dean’s. I am sure they thought that Candy would bail Tori out before things devolved to this point. I’m not saying Tori shouldn’t make good on her debts, just that the banks should have to take their lumps for their poor decisions, too. If a bar can be held responsible for overserving a customer, so should a bank.

  15. Pandy says:

Not a pleasant situation to be in. I would be snickering if they didn’t have so many kids. Candy needs to loosen the purse strings, pay the debt, then give the girl an allowance and an overseer. She does have the money.

    • Lady D says:

Candy pays her debt she learns nothing. How many times has mommy bailed her out already? Plus, a year from now she would be $300 grand in debt again. Why not, when mommy can fix it? She has five children, it’s time she understood the concept of responsibility.
As for an allowance, how much is the rent, and the private schools? The groceries each month alone for a family of five would be a damn fine allowance.

    • Anon33 says:

SMDH, No she does not. Tori is a grown ass woman in her forties who brought five kids into the world. She needs to learn how to manage her own life and her own money, just like the rest of the free world.

Candy already provides for the kids. She is absolutely not required to bail Tori out of her stupid first world messes. No way.

    • Erica says:

Tori and dean are two able bodied adults capable of working but yet they continue to not work and keeping racking up debt.I think tori feels entitled to the money her father left candy.I don’t think candy should bail her out when she already pays for school, housing, groceries yet they continue to rack up more debt while not having to pay any bills.

    • Christin says:

Is that fair to the other sibling, who apparently lives a far different (reasonable) lifestyle?

I agree with the poster who thinks she’s just trying to get (or force) bigger chunks of her dad’s money, via her mother.

  16. SolitaryAngel says:

OMG–the ad at the top of this page is about backtaxeshelp.com. How appropos!

The shirt that poor child is wearing–it says “All day every day”. Yes, you are being exploited all day every day. I feel so sorry for those children.

  17. holly hobby says:

The housewife case was for bankruptcy fraud I think. I don’t think these clowns filed BK yet. If and when they do and they fail to report assets, then yup they will go to jail for that.

US Trustee means business if you lie over the assets.

  18. holly hobby says:

I love baby Beau side eyeing his brother in the last pic.

  19. Alison Ryan says:

I do not like Tori or her husband. They/He is gross. However, I feel bad for Tori because she never was raised to be responsible. She had unlimited access to money. She was cut off only when her dad died. This type of person cannot be treated like an adult. They need trusts to keep them away from problems. Her mom is partially to blame and is really awful for not just stepping up. She has so much money. Again, really don’t care for either of them, but they are only as bad as their parents most likely.

    • Ozogirl says:

I don’t feel bad for her at all. She is a grown woman in her 40’s with her own family. There’s only so long that you can blame Mommy and Daddy for all of your problems. She needs to get a job (Dean too) and accept help for her addiction. Her mom should not keep enabling them IMO

    • Christin says:

Any adult has to navigate different income levels (budgets) throughout their life. It can go up, down repeatedly. Just because she was over indulged doesn’t exempt her from being responsible with credit and expenses. Her brother supposedly lives a more modest lifestyle, so why should she be treated with kid gloves?

She’s a middle aged mother of five, who was given incredible opportunities in her teens/20s that could have provided a comfortable lifestyle for decades, had she managed her own TV show earnings better.
