Here are all of the new trailers, posters & information from Disney’s D23 expo

wrinkle in time

The annual Disney expo/conference was held this weekend, and every year, I’m sitting here like “Crap, I forgot all of these films were Disney properties now.” Not just the films we expect to be Disney-branded movies, like animated princess films and family-friendly entertainment. Now the Marvel films are under the Disney banner, as are the Star Wars films and more. So, here is some new stuff, which Disney has held on to for months, waiting for the D23 conference so they can unload a bunch of new trailers, posters, behind-the-scenes videos and more.

The Last Jedi. We’ve already seen the first trailer for The Last Jedi, at the D23 expo, Disney released a behind-the-scenes video with some short little interview clips with the actors. Sigh… this is going to be both good and sad.

A Wrinkle in Time. I love the fact that Ava DuVernay and Disney are working together now, and that Disney hired Ava to make A Wrinkle in Time, a film adaptation of the popular kids/young adult book by Madeleine L’Engle. I love that Ava cast the film with diversity, hiring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey in big roles. Here’s the first trailer:

Mary Poppins Returns. Emily Blunt is the new Poppins (mind the Poppins!) and here’s the “interactive poster.”

The Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel showed some footage of Infinity War at the D23 expo, but they’re not putting that footage online, so all we have are descriptions of what the footage shows. Apparently, Thanos the “cosmic death-dealer” is around and he’s played by Josh Brolin. Marvel pres. Kevin Feige confirmed that every single person in the Marvel universe is going to make an appearance in Infinity War.

Dumbo. A live-action remake of Dumbo is going to happen, with Tim Burton directing. I kept waiting to read the sentence “and Johnny Depp will star as Dumbo,” but it never came. The projected cast will include Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Eva Green. No Depp?

Aladdin. They apparently found an actor to play Aladdin, hallelujer. And it’s not Ansel Elgort, so sad for him. Naomi Scott has been cast as Princess Jasmine and Mena Massoud will be Aladdin.

Black Panther. No new trailer or anything, but Chadwick Boseman was at the expo to hype Black Panther and sign a lot of stuff.

Whoaaa, A Wrinkle in Time preview legit made me cry, I’m so pumped. That book really blew my mind when I was a kid. I always think about the identical houses with matching moms and kids any time I drive through a prefab suburb.

    • WingKingdom says:

Oooo that trailer is so beautiful! The visuals alone are going to be awesome, but I’m also so excited about seeing this book come to life!

I’m so happy they found a Middle Eastern actor to play Aladdin!

I wish they’d done the same for Jasmine (she really should be of MENA heritage too) but the people going off on the actress cast as Jasmine for being mixed and light-skinned and not ‘Indian’ looking enough, are ridiculous. First off, she’s pretty much the exact same skin tone as the actor and I don’t see anyone screaming colorism at him. And where was all this outrage when people were suggesting half-white/South Asians like Zayn Malik for the role? What’s sauce for the gander is sauce for the goose.

    • Craven says:

I havent seen the reactions but from a quick google it seems she is half white? Maybe their problem is the Hollywood obsession with brown guys falling for white girls or very light skinned brown girls. I would have been surprised if they picked a girl darker than the boy because as far as I can remember that would be a first in Hollywood. People are entitled to be mad about that pattern.

      • Div says:

Colorism is a valid complaint as is not casting an actress of MENA descent. However, there were an annoying amount of people claiming she wasn’t “Indian” (never mind the fact that there are numerous ethnic/tribal groups in India and people come in all shades of brown) because she was mixed while simultaneously stanning for biracial, South East Asian guys who were arguably just as light or lighter than Naomi to be cast as Aladdin.

If the twitter frenzy was solely about colorism/MENA I would have completely agreed with the argument…but it veered into hypocritically erasing her heritage while complaining that biracial, South East Asian Avian Jorgia was a “true Indian” and should have been cast (RME). To be fair, I suspect a big portion of the twitter frenzy are 14 year old fan girls.

      • teacakes says:

@Div – colorism is absolutely a valid complaint, but then she shouldn’t have been the only one singled out. Mena Massoud is just as light-skinned as she is, but I hear not a peep about that, which points to the real source of the anger being not so much about Naomi Scott’s looks but her parentage.

What really pissed me off was the utter hypocrisy of it all – first people post all these suggestions of half white/half South Asian actors and claim Jasmine can be Indian because of some vague claims of Indian visual elements (which are equally easily found to be ME in origin), then they get mad when the girl cast doesn’t fit their image of what an Indian looks like, never mind that in candid photos she’s very obviously brown and there are full-blooded Indians who are lighter-skinned than her .

ontd especially was the absolute worst, it basically devolved into claims that anyone who disagreed with them about Naomi was either biracial or light-skinned Indian, like there was some ‘prove your Indianness by what MAC foundation shade you use’ feels going on.

    • salmah says:

I agree, Teacakes. I would have definitely preferred a MENA Jasmine, but the hypocrisy over Naomi Scott versus the also biracial S. Asian / White suggestions of Avan Jogia and Zayn Malik is just weird. Why is she wrong and those two, for example, right? Is it the name? Is it because she’s a woman and some of those doing the pushing don’t fancy her so won’t forgive the things they forgive in their own (equally non MENA, equally half white, equally light) fancast faves? I understand colorism (I’m a dark Middle Easterner) but the obvious hypocrisy there is glaring.

Also seen some snide remarks because Mena Massoud is a Copt. It’s ridiculous. He’s still a man of MENA descent. His religion does not matter nor make him less of an Middle Easterner. He’s as much of middle Eastern heritage as I, an Iraqi Muslim, am. I’m glad he got the role and I wish him the best for his future career.

      • teacakes says:

@Salmah – I agree, Jasmine should be Middle Eastern. But I’m just taken aback to see how people who ordinarily are so ‘woke’ about ethnic accuracy in casting have nothing to say about Naomi not being Middle Eastern but instead are screaming about her parentage and her look.

And now people are picking on Mena Massoud for being a Copt? Being Christian doesn’t change the fact that he’s Middle Eastern, I mean I’m Christian too and very much a brown Indian! Religion =/= ethnicity, people need to learn that.

      • Fiorucci says:

Salmah not sure if you saw the cartoon Aladdin (I saw it around 12 and loved it but women younger than me may have missed it?) but in the cartoon Aladdin does not seem religious! He’s “a street rat” so the palace would perhaps not be able to determine his religion or heritage. I agree with you, the ethnic origin is more important than the religion. I assume Copts could convert and vice versa anyways

      • salmah says:

@teacakes I so agree. The Middle East, North Africa and South Asia are such religiously diverse areas that attributing something “unseen”, such as religion, to keep a character ethnically pure or correct is crazy. I had some strong words with those fools on my timeline this morning. Lunacy.

@fiorucci Me and my brother (who’s called Allaeldein, or Aladdin in English) adored the film! Religion wasn’t a part of it, even though I saw someone argue that because “Allah” was said it proved that the characters were Muslims. However, Allah is the name for God in Arabic, so all Arabic speaking Muslims, Jews and Christians say it to mean God. Christians and Muslims can convert either way (although it is frowned upon – it tends to be easier to join the dominant religion of a country than to leave it if truth be told) – for example to get married to his first wife the actor Omar Sharif converted from Coptic Christianity to Islam, and there have been several high profile human rights cases in Iraq and Egypt involving Muslims (various athletes, activists, civilians, etc.) who have converted to different sects of Christianity from Islam.

I agree with you both. Religion does not have any bearing on ethnicity or heritage.

    • Marianne says:

From what I read, he’s Egyptian.

    • blogdis says:

      @teacakes etal
What some people don’t or won’t ? Seem to get that colorism has ALWAYS been an issue that tends to affect women more than men ,especially in the media
Across cultures, in movies, romance novels etc. a standard trope is the men are tall, dark ,and handsome whilst fair , porcelain skin etc. are the descriptives for the ideal for women
ANd no , Naomi is definitely lighter than Mena which again is another unwritten rule of POC representation in media , that whatever the shade of the man , the woman must be at least one or two shades lighter

Hollywood is so averse to showing WOC as desirable or as the protagonist that when forced to do do they go for the most white adjacent woman they can find which is usually half white ( which is a sort of extension of white privilege ).The fact that people have to keep explaining what is wrong with that is tiresome at this point

Anyways, I Am not going to prolong a debate on this, I have come to realize some people just prefer to be willfully obtuse when it comes to certain things

      • teacakes says:

Well, Hollywood doesn’t seem to be following that memo to a T, given I just watched Spider-man Homecoming, where the hero’s love interest was very definitely several shades darker than him.

And Mena and Naomi do look like they have the same skin tone to me, though I doubt we can lock down foundation shade differences without actually seeing a picture of them together. And as I pointed out, people are quick to point out colorism (a valid point) and claim that she doesn’t look Indian enough, when the real issue is that Jasmine shouldn’t be Indian in the first place. I see people are conspicuously silent on that point.

And it still doesn’t justify her parentage and looks being discredited while people recommend half-white male candidates (Zayn, Avan Jogia) for Aladdin with no eye to the double standard.

      • SKF says:

IVe spent a lot of time living in the Middle East and she is darker than plenty of people there. People in the Middle East vary greatly in skin tone. For example in Oman there are Omanis of all shades with a lot of African heritage, Indian heritage, etc mixed in. My 100% Omani boyfriend was black with dreadlocks and spoke with an American accent because of the school he went to. In Jordan and Palestine you have a lot of people with extraordinary light coloured eyes and a wide range in skin colour – plenty of people with light olive, even pale skin. It is very variable. To say this girl is too light is just incorrect. Yes, they probably should have cast an Arabic actress; but the background of the story is highly confused anyway and has elements that span Asia and MENA. 1001 Nights itself represents stories from across MENA and Asia – including plenty of Indian references. The Disney story was a mishmash of cultural references. I think it’s okay?

So happy that my husband Chris Pine is picking wonderful roles these past few years.

    • WingKingdom says:

      His choices are amazing.

    • browniecakes says:

I was at the D23 Expo Live Action panel (waited overnight 9 hours). Chris Pine was on stage, introduced by Alan Horn, head of Disney’s studios who congratulated Chris on Wonder Woman. It got a big round of applause. Classy of Disney I thought to mention the success of a DC comic/Warner Brothers movie.

  4. lisa says:

dumbo really? how many poor animals will be trained to do unnatural things to get that off the ground?

    • Craven says:

They’ll probably do it like Life of Pi. Lots of computerised action.

      • lisa says:

        i hope so

      • smyling says:

The Jungle Book was entirely CGI, except for the human actor, so I’m going to assume that Disney will CGI the animals in Dumbo as well.

Just also want to mention that D23 is every two years, not every year.

    • Char says:

The cartoon is already extra sad, why giving it to Tim Burton to make it not only sad, but weird?

  5. Rice says:

So Chris Pine stars in a Marvel-associated movie and a DC movie?

    • Marianne says:

What Marvel movie is he in?

If you’re just referring to Disney as a whole, he worked with them both on The Finest Hours and on Into The Woods. And that was before Wonder Woman.

    • lightpurple says:

He’s in A Wrinkle in Time, which is a Disney movie, not a Marvel movie.

  6. Jerusha says:

Just got this yesterday. Michael! Chadwick! Lupita! Not to forget Angela, Forrest, Andy. I am so looking forward to Black Panther.

    • grabbyhands says:

I got mine yesterday too. I always look forward to new Marvel movies, but I haven’t been this excited about one in a while.

  7. lucy2 says:

I can’t wait for the Last Jedi!!! I’ve really loved the 2 new films, I’m hoping this continues to be as good.
Not generally a Marvel fan, but the Black Panther looks good, and that is an amazing cast.
A Wrinkle in Time looks phenomenal. I haven’t read that since I was a kid and I remember very little about it, time to re-read! That’s a great cast also, and the trailer is very well done.

That “interactive poster” is creepy as hell.

  8. Perpetua says:

The Jasmine casting choice….why am I not crazy about it…. She looks too young to me? She looks 14 to me lol am I the only one?

  9. Birdix says:

I also saw something about Nutcracker and the 4 Realms, which has an evil Mother Ginger?! Does anyone know more about this project? It has Keira Knightly and Misty Copeland and s few others.

    • MellyMel says:

Yes! I’m so excited for this! It’s supposed to come out some time in November or December next year. Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren are also involved.

  10. eto says:

I’m so tired of Chris Pine being in everything! Even if he is my favored Chris of all the Chris’.

    • cr says:

But he’s not ‘in everything’. He was in three movies last year, and one so far this year. That’s about normal. But, he’s getting better offers and making better choices, so the movies he’s in are getting more attention.

  11. Bethy says:

I cried when I saw Carrier and Mark in the behind the scenes for Last Jedi. As a die-hard Star Wars and Marvel fan, while I am excited for Infinity Wars, I think Jedi is going to deliver a punch to the gut like Empire did. I’m prepared for lots of deaths like Rogue One.

    • teacakes says:

I haven’t watched the footage, my heart is just not ready to see Carrie for the last time ever as Leia.

And I’m anticipating the gut punch too, especially given that Rian Johnson has the director’s chair for this one.

  12. jammypants says:

    D23 isn’t annual. Its biannual 😉

    • browniecakes says:

I’ve gone to D23 Expo for the Live Action panel in 2013, 2015 and 2017- wouldn’t miss it. This year it fell one weekend before SD Comic Con.

  13. Guest says:

The summary of the Avengers movie is crazy. Huge spoilers regarding our Asgardians. So if you are not interested in spoilers you should not check Twitter or any Marvel related articles. Where the eff did Hiddleston vanish to? The guy hasn’t been seen forever…..

    • magnoliarose says:

Hopefully he is reevaluating his disastrous PR relationship with Taylor. She as usual moved on to new PR bfs and his reputation took a serious hit. He needs to do something to make it look like a nothing blip but his PR instincts don’t seem that sharp.

  14. Tila says:

I’m here for black panther and a wrinkle in time. I don’t like going to cinema due to having remortgage my house to pay for a ticket but those, I’ll take the risk for. Also, Chris Pine picks some woke arse films.
