Carice Van Houten shares some theories about Melisandre & ‘Game of Thrones’

Chelsea Handler and Tomi Lahren speak at day 1 of the 2017 Politicon: The Unconventional Convention

SPOILERS for this season of Game of Thrones.

As we saw on episode 7.3 of Game of Thrones on Sunday (“The Queen’s Justice”), Melisandre’s stay at Dragonstone had come to an end. It would be an interesting moment of two spiders, actually: Melisandre and Varys, plotting and shading each other like snipers. From what was said, I gather that we will not be seeing Mel for the rest of the season, maybe not until the end of the series, if that. Which is probably why Carise Van Houten – who plays Mel – has given what seems like an “exit interview” to Elle Mag. Just FYI: Melisandre has always been one of my favorite characters, even when she’s doing something deplorable. I love her. I love how haughty she is and how she can take another character down a peg. Anyway, here’s what Carice had to say about her time on GoT:

On the significance of Melisandre meeting Varys: “It was different for her, talking to Varys, than it was talking to Stannis or Davos. Here’s someone who, like her, has a long-term vision, who has that sarcastic sort of confidence. They both know how to get what they want in sneaky ways.”

On whether Varys will get far if he tries to escape his fate: “I think he’s not gonna make it. But that’s my personal thought. Some things, terrible things, have to happen in these last seasons! It’ll probably be one of those where he’ll try run from it, but he’ll get it in the end.”

On her character not being afraid to die: “I have a feeling that she’s tired. She’s old, man. She knows what this world is about. That’s what makes her powerful, but also more vulnerable in the end. But I think she’s afraid of dying before seeing for herself that everything ends all right. Even if it means she has to sacrifice herself. That’s my other theory.”

On taking Melisandre’s prophesies seriously: “Well, her eyesight isn’t great. At this point, I feel like it’s not about her anymore. She’s made huge mistakes and is aware of it. She refers to how ‘prophecies are dangerous things,’ so she’s learned from her mistakes. She’s more careful. And she’s regained a little bit of her faith after bringing Jon Snow back form the dead.”

On how she won fans’ favor after resurrecting Jon Snow in season six: “Suddenly, I was a hero! All of a sudden it was ‘Melisandre for President!’ Before it was just, ‘Die, bitch, die!'”

On her favorite scene from the show being the gut-wrenching (and controversial) moment in season five, when Melisandre convinces Stannis to light his young daughter aflame at pyre in order to elicit favor from the Lord of the Light: “I think that was probably my favorite scene of the whole series. I love not having any lines because—apart from the fact that I don’t have to learn them—I just love silent acting. The burning of Shireen was f–king awful, but it was also an amazing and iconic scene.”

On how she’s different from her character in real life: “Everyone expects this stern, straight-backed woman, not someone who walks in and trips over the f–king floor.”

On how the shooting schedule took a toll on her, after going back to work just six weeks after giving birth to her son with partner Guy Pierce: “I was crying on set. Between shooting the scenes, expressing and acting, and ‘Where is my baby?!'”

[From Elle]

I sincerely hope that wasn’t the end of Melisandre, or the last we see of her in any case. She’s a survivor in a weird, strange and difficult way. Like, I was watching Sunday’s episode and thinking, “Isn’t it weird that Davos is still around?” Isn’t it though? It’s it weird that Mel came through? Isn’t it weird that Theon is still alive?? I like that Carice brings up the idea that Mel might sacrifice herself for the greater good, and that’s something I’d like to see too – she has a lot of magic, and God knows what a smoke-baby-monster could do to the Night’s King. Or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I agree I love all the scenes with Melisandre, she acting is amazing…especially when she has no lines to say and her look says it all. I really want more of her 🙂

  2. Erinn says:

I read recaps and theory but can’t watch the show because it stresses/grosses me out. I love reading all the different ideas/conspiracies that people have going though.

And oh my god, I love her hair color. I wish red wasn’t so hard to keep up – I loved having a more red toned brown color, but my god it’s a lot of work. And a lot of staining.

I love her red hair, it’s so fitting !!!!!!! I get this serious hair envy when I see her.

    • Lila says:

Henna. lol you’ll have the opposite problem – that stuff never washes out!

  3. lightpurple says:

Can Melisandre explain why we haven’t seen Ghost in ages?

  4. Jenns says:

Here is my random theory: Jon will die again in the war for the dawn and Mel will bring him back.

Totally random theory: The White Walkers get an ice dragon and Mel will use her magic to turn it against them.

  5. Lucy says:

A great female character, portrayed by a great actress. I’m sure she’ll come back in a big way.

  6. Originaltessa says:

Kind of off topic, but is everyone enjoying this season? I’m a real fan of the show, but I’ve felt a complete disconnect from the first 3 episodes. The dialogue, sets, costumes, acting… everything just feels off. Shrug.

    • bros says:

it’s awful. they are using a bunch of weird cinematic gimmicks especially in the cinematography that feel completely off from the rest of the seasons and it’s really jarring. im also especially over Dany’s auto repeat lines. I feel like you could take any one of her speeches from the last 6 seasons and put them in any of her scenes now and she’d be saying exactly the same thing about loyalty, her heritage, her family, her expectations, her entitlement to the iron throne. She’s seriously one note.

    • Leelee says:

Yes. This season is terrible. I waited a whole year for this s?

    • Zondie says:

@ORIGINALTESSA In previous seasons the pace was slower and the innumerable plots, characters and twists made the show stand out as something different. Now they are running out of time and characters are acting like you expect they would, so now GOT resembles traditional TV more.

  7. Millenial says:

I didn’t realize she was with Guy Pearce — that’s a fun Hollywood couple.

Also, beware, the internet is dark and full of spoilers. Be careful when reading the comments sections.

  8. Diana B says:

Varys is always getting told by red priesteses. It’s so funny to me. The look on his eyes is always priceless.

    • Zondie says:

Do you think the show will ever reveal whose voice Varys heard back when he was “cut.”? So many questions raised in this show, so little time to wrap it all up neatly.

      • Diana B says:

I really hope so. They need to tell us what it said.

      • Dee Kay says:

Oh man they have GOT (haha that’s a pun on GoT, get it??? okay sorry) to tell us what the Lord of Light told Varys in the flames. WHAT DID LOL SAY???? Maybe it had something to do with dying in Westeros, and who knows, maybe that’s why Varys made it his goal to *get* to Westeros from Essos in the first place, to try to climb as high in the ranks of power as he could, if he would have to die there. Maybe what the LOL said has already been revealed to us, in Melisandre telling Varys about his death location (and hers).

  9. lizzie says:

    she is crazy beautiful.

  10. Cleo says:

Melisandre is still canceled after her part in sacrificing Shireen. That little girl was adorable and her relationship with Davos was so pure, Mel is on my sh*tlist for that.

  11. crazydaisy says:

Carice really has done a terrific job on this show, creating such a universally hated (resurrection aside), intriguing and complex character. Lord Of Light – so awful. But yes, such a beauty!

  12. themummy says:

NO. I refuse to accept that this might be the last we see of Melisandre EVER. ::sobs:: No, nope, nuh uh. I freaking love that character.

(And also, I wanted more back story on how she’s actually an old, old lady. How? Why? Since when? What for? Tell me all the things, GOT, damn it!!)

  13. Dee Kay says:

I really really hope that Carice van H is correct about Melisandre coming back at the end and using all her magic against the WW. I mean, srsly, the Army of the Dead is not going to be defeated by human beings armed with spears. They are going to need ALL. THE. MAGIC. And for Melisandre’s many mistakes (and I, too, loathe what she did to Shireen), she has maybe the most magic of anyone. Of course Dany clearly is magical and so are the dragons, but in terms of being able to consciously, purposely, try to do magical things, Melisandre has shown that she can do it. So…what else can she do??? What can she do against hundreds of thousands of ice zombies???? I want to know. I want to see it.
