The Will and Grace cast took just 40 minutes to decide to do a revival

It’s almost time for the return of NBC’s “must-see TV” lineup on Thursday nights, anchored by the highly anticipated revival of Will and Grace, which starts its 12-episode run on September 28. The show’s stars, Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullaly, grace the cover of this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly Along with the show’s creators, Max Mutchnick and David Cohan, the cast talks about the return of the beloved sitcom.

The seeds for this revival were planted last fall when the actors reunited for a 10-minute video encouraging people to vote that was the talk of YouTube. According to Max Mutchnick, it only took “40 minutes” to get everyone on board. He told EW, “It was amazing. We gave them a date and brought everybody back together….We had everybody from the pilot do this. It was incredible. In front of and behind the camera, we had every single member.”

After the buzz from the video, the talks of a return for the series began in earnest. Megan Mullaly recalls, “I was sitting on the couch in my house, reading the script and then I emailed Max and I said, ‘Why can’t we do this show again?’ And he emailed right back saying ‘We can!’” Debra Messing says that the quartet’s enduring chemistry also helped bring the show’s return to fruition.

I always thought about the four of us as being like an orchestra and each of us playing a different instrument and creating a musical together. Comedy is music. Once we started playing the music again, it was like, ‘Oh, I know how this song goes.’

The reunion of the cast and crew went swimmingly, somewhat to the surprise of Mutchnick, who mused, “The strangest thing about it is how comfortable and natural everybody has been with the whole thing. We did this having not seen each other for 10 years and then decided one day to show up to work and got right back to it. Here we are. That’s a pretty bizarre thing.”

The show’s creative team are hoping viewers forgot about the series finale in 2006 which ended with Will and Grace drifting apart after they both became parents. Grace reconciled with her ex, Leo (played by Harry Connick Jr.) and had a daughter while Will raised a son with his former lover Vince (played by Bobby Canavale). Mutchnick and Kohan decided to just pretend the events of the finale never happened. From what they told EW, they certainly made the right decision. Take note, How I Met Your Mother.

“We spent most of our time trying to figure out what would be the way to make the show the best version of itself coming back after 11 years,” executive producer/creator Max Mutchnick tells EW. “That finale really caused us a lot of grief. You write a finale because a show is over. You never think that it’s coming back again.”

“When the decision was made to bring the series back, we were like, well, we left them with kids, right?” adds executive producer/creator David Kohan. “And if they have children, then it has to be about them being parents, ‘cause presumably it would be a priority in their lives. And if it wasn’t a priority in their lives, then they’re still parents, they’re just bad parents, right? We frankly did not want to see them being either good parents or bad parents. We wanted them to be Will and Grace.”

I hope they really just forget about the flash-forward finale and don’t try to explain it. I doubt it though, as Megan Mullaly joked with EW, “They did tell me my first line. My first line is, ‘I had the weirdest dream.’ I don’t know what that signifies.” She is kidding, right? And, Harry Connick Jr. fans, don’t fret, the singer/actor will be making an appearance on the new season.

I’m still excited for the return of Will and Grace. I love the characters (especially Jack and Karen) and can’t wait to catch up with them. I hope that, as Max Muthnck described the return after almost 11 years, “That stew tastes even better.” Let’s hope so. Stew can go either way, and there’s nothing worse than bad stew.

The photo shop and/or plastic surgery in those magazine pics is off the chain.

I was just going to say. They tried to make them look like they did when the show ended and somehow almost succeeded. They have aged, it’s not a crime. They all look fantastic but they HAVE aged. Good god.

Also, can’t wait for the show to start.

I am in lust with Megan’s dress though!

Well yeah, what else were they doing really? Will & Grace is by far the high point of all their careers (unless you count Mullaly’s cameos as Tammy 2 on P&R), and since they never earned Friends-type money I imagine the cash from a reunion would have been extremely alluring.

    • Mata says:

Those were exactly my thoughts. It’s not as if their careers are on fire. They’ll get some extra cash and what have they got to lose?

They have all been pretty constantly working, even if you may have not noticed it. The big difference is that this is their highest profile project by far, and one that had a real place in pop culture history (which you can’t say about Debra Messing’s scarves on that Broadway show). Less “we had nothing else to do” and more “people will actually watch this one”

Sean Hayes got into producing – he does more niche sci if kind of stuff (he did Grimm).

Mulally has worked a lot, beyond just being Tammy 2. She genuinely seems like she’d be game far anything as long as she has the time.

Aww, I am actually looking forward to this. Even more so now that they made it official that the flash forward did not happen at all.

I love Harry Connick Jr. but hated Leo so much. Grace was much more intolerable with Leo than she normally was. Nathan and Grace worked so much better together.

Does this mean that Vince and Will broke up? I hope not. Bobby was hilarious as Vince. Vince’s weird obsession with gloves and his tendency to be OTT balanced Will out. They were cute together.

I also wonder if they are going to acknowledge Debbie Reynold’s death since she played Grace’s mom.

Although I loved the show back in the 90’s, I do not believe they will have the same success as they did back then. The world has changed in the past 20 years and they are no longer the first gay TV sitcom. I wish them the best though in their revival.

    • Esmom says:

I loved the show back in the day but I have zero interest in this now. And for some reason I find these photos (except the one where they’re not dressed up for the photo shoot) highly irritating. They seem to have turned their zaniness up to 11 and it’s too much.

    • mayamae says:

I don’t think they were the first gay TV sitcom. Ellen preceded them by several years.

I’m hoping they go hard on the Trump administration. It would be a natural fit for this irreverent show.

  5. Alix says:

By all means, let’s wipe our collective memory of that godawful finale.

Why is Megan Mullally aging backwards?

  6. Nicole says:

Yea the finale was terrible still not as bad as HIMYM but pretty close. I’m excited for this! I loved the show and I thought they had good chemistry. Jack and Karen are my favorites

  7. wheneight says:

The last sentence was spot on. I can definitely see this re-boot going one of two ways. I hope it’s a success though. Lord knows I could use more lighthearted distractions in this day and age.

  8. Alleycat says:

Ugh why is Debra doing that annoying mouth pose on this cover? Why has this trend expanded from teenagers to grown women? It’s not cute.

  9. Bridget says:

Weren’t Will and Vince back together once they adopted their baby?

  10. Jennifer says:

    I am very excited!!!

  11. Heat says:

I think this was my most loathed series finale ever! AS IF Will and Grace wouldn’t have been friends for 18 years! Ughhhh so glad they are ignoring it.

  12. Crackfox says:

I know someone who writes for the show. If what he tells me is true, the show won’t be as popular is it was the first time around.

As L0L0 (LoLo?) said a LOT has changed in the past few years, especially the LGBTQ-all the other letters community has changed. This is a show about upper-middle class and rich White people in NYC and what from I’ve heard all attempts to diversify the cast have been shot down.

The jokes they made 10 years ago are not going to go well with this new generation of liberal queer SJWs.
