Donald Trump: There are ‘many sides’ to blame for Nazi terrorism in Virginia

I’ve lived in Virginia for most of my life. Of course I’m aware that there were always racists in my midst. I’ve seen the confederate-flag bumper stickers and the rednecks in pick-up trucks with their “white pride” banners. I’ve just always thought… those people are the minority, those people are ignorant. I’ve even had moments of optimism where I’ve thought “I bet they’re so ignorant, they don’t even realize what they’re really promoting.” I don’t think that anymore. On Friday and Saturday, white nationalists, white supremacists, neo-Nazis and whatever else you want to call them, they all met in Charlottesville, Va. They crawled out of their caves, basements, and trailer parks and they decided that they, the white men, were the most oppressed people in the world. Because “free speech.” Because “white lives matter.” Because…???

The Nazis met in Charlottesville because of the ongoing “controversy” over the Robert E. Lee statue. The Charlottesville City Council voted to remove the statue and rename Lee Park. The statue still stands because a judge ordered the city to halt the removal for six months. On Friday night, the Nazis gathered around the statue with tiki torches and Confederate flags. The protests were violent on Friday (yet the police presence was minimal), but the whole thing got a lot worse on Saturday. There was widespread violence – most of it instigated by the Nazis – as the Nazis clashed with UVA students, Black Lives Matter counter-protesters, journalists and assorted allies. Finally, the cops were around and breaking up some of the fighting, and some of the Nazis even got arrested, like Richard “Remember When He Got Punched In the Face for Being a Nazi?” Spencer. He apparently got pepper sprayed and kicked a few times.

Then on Saturday afternoon, a Nazi used his or her car to plow into a group of counter-protesters, in what was a blatant terrorist attack reminiscent of the recent terrorist attacks seen in France and Germany. At least one person died, and more than a dozen were injured. I’m not going to post the video of the car plowing into people. Trust me when I tell you it was a deliberate act. Trust me when I tell you it was a terrorist attack.

So what did our Tweeter-in-chief have to say about all of this? Did he have anything to say specifically to his “base” of white nationalists, Nazi wingnuts, racists, misogynists, nativists, jingoists and the assorted trash of America, all of whom feel emboldened by the 21st century’s first white supremacist president? Of course not.

“Charlottesville sad!” What part of it was sad, Bigly? That you couldn’t join in on all the Nazi fun? That your base was getting pepper sprayed and kicked? After those tweets went over like a lead balloon, Bigly issued another statement, this time on camera. He read from a script, saying: “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. On many sides. It has been going on for a long time in our country. Not Donald Trump. Not Barack Obama. It has been going on for a long, long time.”

Emperor False Equivalency is all-lives-mattering a weekend where American Nazis were literally sieg-heiling and Nazi-saluting. He’s saying that sure, white supremacists were committing terrorism and treason but BLACK PEOPLE WERE YELLING TOO. Many sides! Obviously, fat-ass couldn’t even be bothered to properly identify this as terrorism, nor would he explicitly condemn the actions of his base of supporters. Of course not.

I don’t even have any words strong enough to condemn this.

    • anonymous says:

I don’t have words strong enough to write what I feel about Donald Trump and His supporters.

      • Belle Epoch says:

I noticed Paul Ryan called it a “spectacle.” O Rly? Like a circus act? Maybe a nice parade? Words are powerful and Stephen Miller – there are no words for him!!! – will make sure his people can hear the dog whistle verbiage that condemns everyone and therefore no one.

The driver is a 20 year old who drove forward and then BACKED UP for good measure. His mother said she “didn’t get too involved” in his views.

If he had been black, he’d be dead, not “in custody.”

People are furious with the ACLU for making this rally possible. I’d like to hear what people think. The ACLU says it is non-partisan. When does non-partisan actually become being an accomplice to the rise of evil? Should the ACLU take a position?

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

It’s a thorny question, Belle, but I’ve gotta say I have finally stopped supporting the ACLU because of this sort of thing. It’s just fucking immoral not to choose a side sometimes.

      • Rapunzel says:

A “spectacle”? WTF?? Cirque du Soleil is a spectacle. A superhero film is a spectacle. This is Nazi violence.

        F-ck Lyin’ Ryan.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Exactly. The hit-and-run Nazi’s mother also very tellingly added that she thought what her son was going to was just some kind of rally in support of Trump.

At least she got THAT right.

      • Esmom says:

I don’t have words strong enough for the people who churn out the talking points and the narrative that the left is fueling all this with its intolerance and disregard for free speech. Last night I felt like I was having an out of body experience I was so angry. My teenage son asked me what was wrong and when I told him and showed him images on my computer he cried, too. He’s a (white) kid and he said “white people have everything, how dare they say “white lives matter?”

      • Mia 4s says:

The victim was white and Christian, that coward in the White House might actually have to say her name at some point.

Heather Heyer. Remember her name. Toss her murderer in a hole and forget he existed. Her name was Heather Heyer.

      • bluhare says:

The ACLU supports everyone’s civil liberties, even bigots and racists. It does not support terror and violence. That this turned into just that is not because of ACLU. If you don’t like what this turned into, blame the participants.

        I support them.

      • Imqrious2 says:

As a Jew, and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, seeing Neo-Nazis marching…gives me chills. Remembering my fathers stories… I just can’t believe this is being allowed in this country. HOW is this NOT hate speech??? How are they allowed permits to march??? HOW IS THIS STILL HAPPENING?????

      • Cintra.C says:

The ACLU supports the rights guaranteed in the constitution. This leads to their support of the rights of people/groups that I despise, but I think, given what their organization stands for, they have to be neutral.

      • Nicole says:

@belle epoch I’ve also stopped supporting the ACLU and the SLPC. I have no time to donate to groups talking out both sides of their mouths. They also posted that a protestor (or I guess counter protestor) threw a rock and that’s why the driver drove through the crowd and backed up over them. That’s the kind of reckless BS I have no time for. You can support the first admenment and still condemn hate speech. They are not counterpoints. The first admenment only protects you from the govt nothing more. The SLPC equates the black panthers to the KKK at times.
So yea I’m done donating to both groups. There are local coalitions that have been receiving my money and now will get the money I used to donate to the other groups.

      • FLORC says:

        Bluhare
        Yes!

And I’m super limited in how I’m responding to this homeland soil terrorist act. The confusion and hate and logic… I can’t sort out words yet..

      • cathy says:

Exactly. This is the president of our country? It’s unbelievable that this is happening. It just keeps getting worse.

REPUBLICANS own this and the people that voted for him. They are all culpable. Shame on them.

      • bluhare says:

You can’t have free speech for only the speech you like. It does not work that way. They have the right to spew their garbage. They also have the responsibility that goes with that, just like we are held responsible for our speech.

It is despicable. But it is not our place to say they don’t have the right to say it.

      • wolfpup says:

Just call them white trash. They hate that. They are not white supreme, they are white trash. The term was first coined by Harriet Beecher Stowe, in Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Nat Turner spared the lives of the white trash because he felt sorry for them. Just call them that. White people can’t stand it. It’s the best insult because they feel so insulted.

Really, call anyone you truly hate white trash – and they become dazed and confused – there must be truth in that term.

I named my first boy, Nathanael.

      • magnoliarose says:

        @bluhare
I support the ACLU also. I don’t condone censorship in any form. No one acts on anyone’s words unless they want to. Sometimes they frustrate me but that is the price of free speech and I am willing to accept that.

      • KiddVicious says:

The ACLU is protecting our constitution. Free speech is for everyone, not just the people whose speech we agree with. It’s a slippery slope if you start to decide who can speak and who can’t. I will always support the ACLU.

      • Charlie says:

There are limits to free speech. Inciting to riot is not a constitutionally protected form of free speech. And marchers in ‘riot gear’ (helmets, clubs, and shields) have no safe harbor under this amendment. The ACLU would not protect advocates of violence and hate. But I am sure they would be staunch supports of these posts!

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.

      • Bellagio DuPont says:

        @ Esmom……

Can I just say…..I believe white lives matter…… ALL LIVES MATTER…..of course they do……

I think the reason why we need to support Black Lives Matter in particular is not because their lives are the only ones that matter, of course not…..but because they find their lives far more at risk than most other groups. I feel like people would/should understand this intuitively, but apparently not.

Your son is beautiful and his life absolutely matters as well. Please give him a warm hug from me 😘😘😘😘

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Bluhare, I understand your point — for decades, until just recently, I supported and was a member of the ACLU, so even I am surprised to be feeling this way — but when a group like these neo-nazis is mobilizing for the express OR indirect purpose of depriving others of their civil rights, I believe it’s wrong of the ACLU to support them, because in so doing, they are directly or indirectly supporting that cause: the deprivation of civil rights to other human beings on the basis of race or ethnicity. That’s what this Alt-Right Stuff is all about. Alt Right = All White.

Senior Advisor to the President Steve Bannon was reportedly part of a Breitbart master plan to arrange the non-violent, negotiated removal of blacks from the US and *relocate* them to Africa (*relocate* being quite a misnomer, since most of these citizens had never BEEN to Africa), the goal being to make America white again (as if it ever WAS all white). Many of the blacks they would send “back” to Africa with a relocation settlement had American ancestry dating back many generations earlier than the racist Breitbart plotters’ own ancestors did, since they were descendants of slaves.

These Alt-Right neo-conservatives are simply neo-Nazis, and just as we would never have supported the right of Nazis in Germany to send Jews to the camps for extermination –or even to publicly mobilize for that purpose — I believe it’s immoral and against the spirit of the US Constitution to support groups whose direct or indirect purpose is to elevate themselves to a position of superiority over others on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

      • Esmom says:

Bellagio DuPont, I think we’re on the same page. BLM’s message is valid and deserves a disproportionate share of attention. That doesn’t mean all other lives don’t matter, of course they do. The false equivalency does nothing but add fuel to the fire. How hard is it to admit that people of color don’t enjoy the same level of privilege that whites do? My kids understand that intuitively. Its our duty as humans to support those who are struggling the most, it doesn’t mean we don’t care about everyone else. It’s not that difficult of a concept and the politicians and conservatives in general who disingenuously insist otherwise need to have several seats.

      • bluhare says:

I was still in school but I remember when the ACLU defended the rights of neo nazis to march in Skokie. They lost membership over that as well. But I think it takes a lot of guts and principle to defend the rights of people whose views you hate. They were defending their right to free speech too, not their right to violence, terror, or even worse. If you believe in the right of everyone to speak their truth, you can’t leave that at the door when someone you abhor wants that same right.
Now, where that stops is incitement to violence, terrorism, or anything else other than their right to express themselves. That being said, I agree with just about everything else you said, Lahdidahbaby!

And now I see that it’s come to Seattle, right in my back yard. In fact, Mr. bluhare and I were just talking about how half of them are probably from where we live. We do not live in the most enlightened part of the metropolitan Seattle area.

      • Indiana Joanna says:

        @Bluehare

I was thinking of Skokie today. I was living in Chicago then. It was such a painful time and so traumatic for Holocaust survivors who had immigrated there because it dredged up horrors the rest of us can never fathom. There were angry protests and much bitter debate–also defended by the ACLU–about the ACLU defending a Nazi sympathizer. But in the end a Jewish friend convinced that the ACLU was there to protect freedom of speech, a hallmark of this country.

I also support the ACLU with donations.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Bluhare, thanks for your thoughtful response to my post about the ACLU. I agree with pretty much everything you’ve said — it’s just that somehow since November 8th, everything feels so dire, so on the verge of calamity and ruin with our ship of state now helmed by a mad, bigoted, impulsive, malignant narcissist, so any formerly unthinkable thing now seems possible, and as a result, somehow none of the truths I’ve always trusted seem indelible anymore. I’ll think more about what you’ve said, though, I promise.

    • Nicole says:

America’s racist foundation and 8 years of Obama backlash led to this.
      There’s no “both sides”

      • snowflake says:

This. Trump supporters can spin whatever bs about why they voted for him. But it was frankly Obama backlash. Seeing a black man in power scared some whites that they would lose their privelege. So they voted for the polar opposite next chance they got. I’m white, I did not realize how much white privelege I have. I thought I got jobs and things because I was charming, smart, pretty, now I realize a lot of it was because I am white. I grew up around all white people. I think there was one black family in our town. I did not have enough exposure to know how badly minorites are treated. I think this rally will wake up a lot of white people to how much racism there is.

      • Tate says:

@snowflake same here. Grew up in a small town with virtually zero diversity. I moved away and have lived most of my adult life in a very diverse town. I continue to keep my mind open to the fact that I still have a lot to learn. I am glad that my children are growing up in an entirely different environment. Their community consists of rich, middle class and poor people. People from many different cultural backgrounds. That is their reality. That is their America.

    • Snappyfish says:

Very well written Kaiser! We live in Charlottesville. Our farm is there. I did my graduate work at UVA. The fact those terrorists were marching The Lawn (or anywhere for that matter) is repugnant. We were at the Arlington Million celebrating a friend’s horse who was running. I spent the day texting everyone back home making sure they were safe.

I lay this at the feet of bigly. You cannot court these groups, use hateful rhetoric to stir up your base & then pretend you have clean hands. Whether he condemns them or not do not be deceived. The President is a racist. He refused to stop this type of behavior at his rallies, he refused to rent to blacks in NYC & has the alt right poster boy at his beck & call a few steps from the Oval Office

I’m heartbroken for everyone at home & around this country that this crap can happen & not be condemned by all. I have a great deal of hope that Robert Mueller will do his job. Then Bigly can deal with his alt right buddies behind bars

      • Cannibell says:

” The President is a racist.”

This. And as long as he’s got Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka and Stephen Miller (who, yes, is Jewish but would have been a Kapo if he’d ended up in a concentration camp), I’m not holding my breath for anything to change. In fact, I dragged this out onto my FB page yesterday. What’s “SAD!” is that it’s 50 years old and feels like it was written yesterday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FhrULg7kjg

    • AnnaKist says:

This is just… I feel sick.

    • BlueSky says:

Make no mistake, the blood of those victims are on the GOP and the Nazi sympathizer in chief. They have embolden these a-holes and given them a voice. I read on Twitter that the GOP are privately wincing. Really?? Really??? You wouldn’t be privately wincing if the perpetrators were brown. And to those a-holes and their confederate BS-YOU LOST, GET OVER IT!

    • isabelle says:

I’m not a person of violence but remember Richard Spencer, and how the Nazi got punched in his face? Oddly satisfying.

    • jwoolman says:

Belle Epoch- the ACLU can’t take sides. Free speech is free speech for everybody. If you are ever in the position of being a lone voice against the overwhelming majority, you will be grateful for those like the ACLU who take the Bill of Rights seriously. It’s easy to support speech that does not disgust you. The real test is the speech that does.

The proper response to ugly speech is to speak up against it and protect those who are targeted by it. We have laws if the uglies go too far into threats or actions. Use them. But the real problem is always that not enough good people speak up when they should.

  2. KJA says:

He has been disgusting from day one, but this might just be a new low. Couldn’t even use the words Nazi, or White Supremacist-the statements were generic and useless. And the members of his party that have spoken up-what good does that do when you voted for him, you’re still covering for him, and when this all dies down you’ll go back to defending him. Empty words all around.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

Oh, I think Trump will continue to out-low himself until he’s out of office — ideally, via impeachment, though I doubt enough GOP could ever muster the gumption, patriotism, and honor to put aside their back-in-power trip and vote that way in order to save our country and the world from this evil idiot.

      • KJA says:

It’s like he considers it a personal challenge. Impeachment can’t come soon enough-hopefully followed by a long jail sentence.

    • lightpurple says:

I think the earlier tweets, and the one from Melania, were written by staff when they realized that he was getting slammed in the media and on twitter and by just about everyone with a shred of decency for not saying something. They prepared stuff and then he approved or edited but didn’t write himself. And those messages were slammed too as not going far enough so more bad messages were created and then the ALL SIDES comment. He sent “Best Regards” to the injured, like they were getting new jobs or something.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Yeah, he’s incapable of convincingly feigning concern for the victims in a situation like this — too afraid of offending his base.

      • Sixer says:

        “egregious display”

There is no way in creation that man could define the word egregious.

Some very highly paid people know how to use strong words in statements that are VERY carefully not condemning any specific group. Indeed, all the nativists seem to be remarkably happy with what was said.

        Ipso facto.

      • KJA says:

Ivanka just tweeted saying there should be no place in our society for racist, neo-nazis and white supremacist. Why does it feel like it was fully planned? Her dad’s core base doesn’t like her husband, and probably have some choice words to say about her religion. She has less to lose. But since she’s come out out to say it, people can justify Trump’s inept statement by saying she probably speaks for him as one of his closest advisors. While Trump has some distance from it to not fully upset his Nazi and KKK base.

Or maybe it’s not that well thought out and she maybe has some kind of conscience left. Or it wasn’t thought out because they’re all just morons.

      • Esmom says:

lightpurple, that “best regards” tweet killed me. He doesn’t have even a molecule of compassion or humanity.
Lahdidahbaby, I don’t think it’s even about not offending his base. He is just incapable of concern for anyone but himself, to the point where faking it isn’t remotely possible. He’s disgusting. I’m at a loss.

      • lightpurple says:

Ivanka tweeted this morning because she too was getting slammed. The sabbath ended around 9 PM last night but she remained silent and people were commenting about it and were not being kind to precious Princess Nagini. Of course, she plunked her ass into a seat at the G20 summit on the sabbath and made speeches and took bribes in Saudi Arabia on the sabbath and has flown repeatedly on the sabbath but couldn’t comment on her daddy’s supporters causing three deaths until the next day.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

When Ivanka says ther should be no place it’s just more vague palm from the mistress of vague pablum. The problem is there IS a place in her father’s society for all of the above and he encourages and enables it. And by her indifference, so does she.

      • magnoliarose says:

Complicity and Crooked J are tokens to give cover to the Nazis in the White House. J’s own family is enraged by him and his use of their family story to excuse Tangerine. The fact that J’s grandparents were such brave people and their story is inspiring for any immigrants fleeing tyranny makes his silence “egregious”. The Jewish group that helped his grandparents come to America now help other immigrants no matter their religion or ethnicity do the same. Complicity is 74 percent plastic and other man made materials so can we expect human emotions and decency from a semi-person?

      • Lady D says:

Three deaths and all he can say is best regards?

      • madonami says:

Regarding Javanka: So, Maggie Haberman, if you’re not already familiar, is an NYT reporter who has been something of a mixed bag because she’s broken a lot of big Russia stories, but she’s also written some Javanka fluff that seemed to pretty clearly have come directly from Javanka and/or their publicist. But, point being, she’s got a lot of connections inside that f-ed up white house, and they call her with the palace intrigue bullsht. She gets legit inside info.

Yesterday, Maggie sent out 3 tweets that strongly suggested that it was not Bannon who wrote bigly’s bullsht “many sides” statements , but it was Miller – and Javanka, and it reflected the “worldview” of Bannon, Miller and Javanka. Javanka is every bit as hateful and bigoted as the Breitbart freaks. I’m just waiting for the story sourced from “senior WH aides” saying the statement was written by Miller, Javanka. Javanka knows perfectly well who their base is and they 100% play that sht behind the scenes. They are more than complicit, they are active participants.

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

KJA, to @Ivanka’s tweet I would reply as follows:

Ivanka. Honey. Your daddy’s Senior Advisor is one.

    • Llamas says:

I think he should have identified it as white supremacist terrorism because we need to know who the terrorists are. The Obama admin shouldve identified radical Islamic terrorism too. But I didn’t see anyone complaining that he never said that. At least be consistent folks.

      • jwoolman says:

Obama made it clear that the phrase was counterproductive because it is used to smear all Muslims for the actions of a very few. I believe he was right about that. There are other ways to identify them. The media rarely identifies Christian terrorists by their religion. Actually, they rarely call white Christians terrorists at all.

Context really does matter and words have meaning beyond the dictionary.

      • magnoliarose says:

Obama isn’t in office anymore. That is deflection about the past and dragging Obama into a conversation to excuse Tangerine’s terrible behavior. Obama didn’t have terrorist supporters in his administration nor did he court them as a voting base of support. He never said they weren’t terrorists. Not the same.
One has nothing to do with the other. Right now matters. There are Nazis in the White House. Put his actions at his feet only. 100 percent him.

      • bluhare says:

        wrong spot!

      • LaBlah says:

Llama – there are millions of Muslims who have done nothing wrong. There is no innocent white supremacist. many of the fascists who were Seig heiling and chanting blood and soil and antisemitic slurs are Christians but no one expects the Enabler in Chief to condemn Christians or call it Christian terrorism.

What you are doing is deflecting at best and it reflects extremely poorly on you.

    • RBC says:

I wonder how Ivanka really feels about her father’s response? She is Jewish and raising her children( trump’s grandchildren)in the Jewish faith. I would be furious and scared for my family if my father did not come down harder on the parasites that were at that protest.
Like how does she handle working with people in her father’s administration who are such bigots? Just unreal

      • Elkie says:

Because she is entirely motivated by greed and the hunger for power and doesn’t care about anyone other than herself?

This is a woman who claimed to be an advocate for women whilst standing by her father’s sexual predation, misogyny and bullying and underpaying her sweatshop workers, even by sweatshop standards.

        #complicitybarbie

      • lightpurple says:

Ivanka failed to acknowledge any of those who died yesterday. She tweeted only to protect her brand. That’s all. That’s all that matters to her.

      • dodgy says:

        @RBC that’s a good question.

When Trump’s supporters turn on her children and her hubby (because she reads as blonde goyim) where will she stand?

      • magnoliarose says:

@ dodgy She has no values or concerns higher than her desire for money. Oddly, she has been after Jewish men for years. My aunt calls her The Super Shiksa. She tried to give her breaks but it is too much now.

      • Louisa says:

I honestly wondered if this would be too much even for Ivanka and that on Sunday morning she and Jared would be packing up their kids and moving back to NY. But nope, money and power are the ONLY things that matter to her.
Her children are too young to understand what’s happening now, but one day she will have to explain herself to them.
History will not be kind to her.

    • Bethy says:

The day I agree with Ted Cruz in a statement is a sad day. But if that moron can tweet out an appropriate response to these Nazi a-holes, then so can Trump. But with Bannon and Miller whispering “alt-right” nonsense in his ear, I doubt 45 will ever acknowledge this was an act of domestic terrorism.

That is exactly what needs to happen to these nazis. Name them and shame them. Many of the ones identified weren’t even from the state and came in specifically for this. It is easy to be anonymous and racist but when these hateful jerks have to own their bigotry, then things will change.

How can anyone expect this alleged president to denounce white supremacists when Alt-Right former Breitbart honcho Steve Bannon is his senior advisor? Let’s face it, the alt-right bigots got him where he is today.

Thanks to Donald Trump, those azzholes can strut around out there giving the Nazi salute without even bothering to cover their faces with white hoods anymore.

Donald Trump really has made America hate again.

    • Beth says:

He’s also got Gorka, who actually wore a Nazi medal to Trumps inauguration. Stephen Miller is another disgusting monster he’s buddies with

      • Lahdidahbaby says:

Jesus, we’re pretty much fucked if the majority of Republican Americans can actually continue looking the other way.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

If they could do it during the campaign, they can do it now.

      • B n A fn says:

Morning Joe has a picture on his twitter feed showing Stephen Miller in the Oval Office flashing the supremist hate sign. This is in our White House, in the Oval Office. #45 cannot condemn this hate group because he’s one ☝️ of them, there’s blood on his hands.

    • Nic919 says:

This is a guy who denied housing to African Americans in the 70s despite court orders forcing him to change. He also took out an ad against the Central Park five years later. He was always and still is a racist bigot like Bannon, Miller and Gorka otherwise they would be hired. There are also people who worked on the Apprentice who say there is a tape of him using the n word in a rage fit. (I think it’s Tom Arnold ).

Cheeto is no different from these white supremacists. He will never condemn them because he is one of them. Racists don’t really change and especially not 71 year old white men who have unchecked power and privilege.

      • B n A fn says:

A lot of people who worked on the Apprentist who knew of his racist ways but said nothing except hinted on things in a vague way are ashamed of covering for him. Howard Stern was another one who has tapes he would not released showing that 45 was a racist 🐷. I hope all those who knew and kept their mouth shut during the primaries and general election are happy with their decisions to stay silent.

I think a small %age of the ones who didn’t care are now beginning to see the full picture of just what they were/are supporting and are beginning to balk at the picture developing.

Yes. Donald Trump has Heather Heyer’s blood on his hands. Meanwhile, he’s trying his damndest to start a war, which is how fascist dictators consolidate their power. It’s how millions of people died at the hands of the Nazis, the same monsters who marched the streets yesterday. Scary times, friends. Disrupt. Resist. We have to fight this.

      • lightpurple says:

Not just Heather Heyer’s but that of Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Pilot Berke M. M. Bates. They would not have been in that chopper yesterday if not for the violence unfolding. Three families mourn today; four children lost a parent yesterday.

  5. Louise177 says:

    • Nancito says:

Last night on CNN they showed tweets from David Duke, where Duke felt that Trump didn’t denounce the counter-protesters enough. Something along the lines of – white supremacists got him elected, they’re his base and he should be standing up for them.

      • LaBlah says:

On the dailystormer online sewer the Nazis are positively gloating that Trump didn’t condemn them. It was a complete dog whistle to them and it worked. Of course it was a pretty shitty whistle because everyone else heard it too, including a whole lot of Republican politicians who are criticising him for it.

    • Shambles says:

Share these photos everywhere, so that Donald Trump and the Republican Party know that they will NEVER be separated from the atrocities of this weekend. This will hang around their necks forever.

Good God, Trump is so ugly. How anyone looks at any one of those half-breeds and thinks “yep they’re superior” is beyond me.

      • Fiorucci says:

What do you mean by half breed?

      • Ksenia says:

KB: Half breeds? If you aren’t aware of it, that’s an extremely insulting term. My husband is half black and half white and people who wanted to offend and hurt him while he was growing up would call him just that, a “half breed.” To use it for white people, while clearly not as bad, is equally senseless. People are not “breeds”, half or full. They may have two or more inherited ethnicities or races, but they are all (technically) people—loathsome as too many are! A half Polish, half Irish (white) person, of two ethnicities, is not a “half breed” any more than people of two races are. It’s an inaccurate, meaningless term, even when you’re just trying to insult white people (or white trash) and it’s a grotesque term when used to refer to the biracial. (And yes, Trump and many of his neo Nazi followers are physically almost as ugly as they are inside. No surprise though, really: Hitler and most of his henchmen were *extremely* unattractive people, even as they preached the supposed aesthetic and physical superiority of the “Aryan race.” Bigots are so stupid, and moronically inconsistent: they never make any sense at all.

I just have no words except I hope those who have “buyer’s remorse” sleep well at night. I can say this from an outsider’s perspective (French) though plenty of good people are lucid enough to see it. You got what you elected. President Trump is just a continuation of candidate Trump. If you thought “it’s just an act! It’s for show!” Well, F… you! You find hateful rhetoric entertaining and easily overlooked?! The guy has SAID he longed for the “good old days”. He publically told to “throw people out” or “rough them up”. Is anyone really surprised by his less than lukewarm statement “condemning violence”. Since when? Has he had a change of heart since encouraging police brutality? He gets all sanctimonious and self-righteous when he talks about Paris and London but this is like the attack on the mosque in Quebec: radio silence. The guy REFUSED the devow David Duke when pressed by Jake Tapper. We know this guy has a “rage setting” but I guess nazis and fascists are no Mika Brzezinski and no Jeff Sessions… (I realize I wrote “the guy” a lot but that’s all he gets from me, and I’m being generous)

Trump can tweet the names of the people of his team he’s pissed off at and humiliate them nonstop, but can’t admit what happened in Virginia was white supremacy. These crazy people voted for him, and he’s such a wimp that he doesn’t want to upset them

      • Ruyana says:

They were also marching and shouting “Heil Trump” while giving the Nazi salute. Yeah, they’re Nazis.

      • jwoolman says:

Nazi is short for the German word for nationalist. Remember Hitler wanted to Make Germany Great Again.

The word is appropriate for these American white nationalist/white supremacist neonazis for this reason, as well as other points of common cause. Consider the chants against Jews in particular at this rally. They carry Nazi flags very deliberately.

I can understand why the Confederacy raises mixed emotions and not all of them bad, in particular for people with ancestors who fought for their homes against Union troops. The Union was ugly both during and after the war and there should be no excuses for it, and Lincoln wasn’t an egalitarian – he just thought Emancipation would be useful for his war to attract more cannon fodder. Considering the prejudices rampant in the North and the North’s deliberate failure to simply boycott slavery out of existence and welcome refugees – I don’t see slavery as the true driving issue of that war, important though Emancipation was for all imprisoned by legal slavery.

But as is the case with some other things, I think they are going to have to relegate the Confederacy to historical museums because its symbols have clearly attracted the worst of us today. The swastika (originally a benign symbol) was tainted by Nazi use of it also and cannot be reclaimed at the moment either. We cannot ignore the current context.

Like these people might love nazis but they aren’t actually part of any association with that name.

      • Nic919 says:

They were using flags with swastikas so using nazi fits well. Plus words have power and this one needs to be used again.

      • Esmerelda says:

        ITA.
While racism is sadly universal, the actual Nazis were an European phenomenon, while this seems to me a specifically American issue, with deep roots in American history. They may cosplay the Nazis a bit, but I think they need an American label.
(The current racist far right in Europe is also not exactly Nazi, but fascist could be a better term)

      • Mia 4s says:

You’ve never heard of neo-nazi organizations? Really? Please read up and educate yourself. I’m not being sarcastic, I’m honestly disturbed someone would not know about this. The struggle against these groups particularly in Europe has gone on for decades.

The new tactic was to come up with the term “alt-right” since even extreme conservatives (usually) bristle at the word nazi. But they are nazis, never doubt that. They share beliefs, tactics, and goals. I could call cancer “unusual cell growth”, but it is still cancer.

They definitely were shouting “hail Trump” and giving him the Nazi salute. They are too ignorant to know it is “heil ” and pronounced that way!

      • Esmerelda says:

        @Mia 4s
I am aware of the long history of neo-nazi organizations. I come from a country were fascist terror cells operated fairly openly well into the 80s. However, I think neo-nazi organizations are but a subset of the racist far right. The racist European far right is broader group, not completely born out of neo-nazis cells. I think it’s helpful to identify them for what they are (racist, fascist, violent) and not just use the name of an old enemy.

      • jwoolman says:

Belle Epoch- “Hail” is the English translation of the German “Heil”. So it makes sense that they were saying “Hail, Trump” rather than “Heil, Trump”.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

If it walks like a duck etc. etc. They are Nazis.

I was reading Mark Mazower this week and as a German citizen with Greek roots had a damn hard time getting through the book. And then I turn on CNN yesterday and see a f*cking swastika flag. A swastika. Under the guise of “freedom of speech”. I almost cried.

These people are not “alt-right”. They are Nazis. It was a special brand of hellfire fascism and if you carry a swastika flag, you subscribe to that particular brand of horror. I’m usually very wary of using “Nazi” or “socialist” etc. too randomly. But this is not even a question. And I don’t think the term needs to be reseved for actual members of the NSDAP and Nazi Germany, confined to the 12 years they were in power. If the shoe fits and all that.

      • magnoliarose says:

They are Nazis. Nazi’s are fascists and they aren’t an old enemy. They are a continuing enemy. It is an ugly word for ugly people.

      • Fiorucci says:

Mia you’re right sorry I do certainly know about neo nazis in Europe and North America, don’t worry. I don’t know I think I’d rather call them neo nazis but not nazis. Not that they are any better than German nazis I just don’t like using the same word for unaffiliated groups. Especially as the German nazis were the government, and these people may have started to get in to the us government but they didn’t come from there. It’s just semantics sorry! Like my petpeeves are when people call any Native North American people “Indian” or any not white people “ethnic” it’s just the wrong word, and isn’t close to being right. (For anyone who possibly does not know, everyone has an ethnicity, not only people who aren’t wasp)

      • LaBlah says:

Nazi is a political ideology not a historical designation and not being in Germany or Occupied Europe in the 30s and 40s does not preclude you from being one. Of course they are Nazis. I can’t believe this is STILL even a damn question.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Fiorucci, not to get too nitpicky but we (Germans) don’t use “Nazis” only for the regime. The lines are blurred as to who would be called “only” a follower, a collaborator etc. but yes, civillians and non-politicians were certainly also Nazis. And they continued to hold key positions on every level of society/industry etc. after the way, hence the student riots in the 60s. From there is was a pretty seemless transition to the neo nazi groups of today. They grew out of what was left. And while you can argue that the people in the streets of Charlottesville are independent from those groups, they are 100% from the same school of thought.

      • Fiorucci says:

Lil miss naughty thank you! I actually did not know any of that about Germany and the present day nazis there. I don’t really know a ton about ww2, Nazis or neonazis either. My only reason to not want to call them nazis is that like you said they aren’t technically part of that original organization called nazis. I have no idea if they have any different beliefs (other than that I think the American ones don’t say “German is the superior race”) it’s the ambiguity of the term that bugs me a bit. It’s just semantics but I’m appreciative of the replies, love to learn something every day.

      • jwoolman says:

Fiorucci- words change over time to describe new situations. The neonazis here in the US clearly support the original Nazi actions and beliefs. The term is quite accurate. Limiting it to just a particular old German political party is not useful and ignores the clear connections between the old German Party and those who carry Nazi flags today.

You’re right about the term “ethnic” – I also cringe when it is applied just to anybody who is not in the “white” category. Race in the US is a social/legal category, basically dividing people into groups according to whether or not they can expect certain rights and privileges. That is still the case today. People go kind of nuts trying to figure out whether or not someone is in the “black” category, for example, no matter how non-racist they consider themselves to be. It still matters at some very real level.

But the people who mainly make up our white supremacist groups really don’t tend to identify with a particular ethnicity. They identify as “White” and think of themselves as the “real Americans” rather than those who have closer connections with a different country of origin. There are certainly exceptions, but their ancestors typically have been here so long that they have lost all real ethnic connections and often they are of British Isles ancestry. (Remember that when looking at modern-day British problems with diversity: the British seem to be doing much better with it than we are, but there must be some cultural connections there that might explain a few things about our problems.) I imagine that is why the term “ethnic” arose, inaccurate though it is. It’s like accents – people typically think they have no accent, but people from other places do. My dissertation adviser was lamenting his children’s strong Midwestern accent. He was from the Bronx! One of the most distinctive accents in the country. But he couldn’t hear it in himself.

I refuse to check off a “white” box on forms asking for ethnicity since “White” is not an ethnic group. If asked to explain on the “Other” line, I’ll say Irish since I’m 3/4 that. There are people who yell at me for messing up the statistics, saying they are needed for government programs. Tough bananas. It’s a stupid way to categorize people and we don’t have to accept it. Let people identify themselves rather than forcing us into tiny little boxes. Many people claim more than one ethnicity. Computers today are quite capable of collecting detailed information about diverse ethnicities and mixes. We can do it with Pokémon, so we can do it with people.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

They may not be members of the former National Socialist party of Third Reich Germany but the word has passed into common usage and they support the racial ideologies of the Nazis and believe in violent action to rid the world of hated groups. They believe they are the master race and they fetishize Nazi memorabilia, use the Nazis salute, and utter Nazis slogans.

They are Nazis. They want to be Nazis. Call them neo Nazs if it makes you more comfortable but neo or oldo, they are Nazis.

      • Fiorucci says:

Thanks for your reply. I’d prefer to say neo nazi for clarity, although I’m now realizing no one would be confused because the other nazis are not here and they’re now dead…I don’t know I just like to be specific

    • IlsaLund says:

The best term to describe them is domestic terrorists.

    • Kelly says:

I wonder how many of these Neo-Nazi domestic terrorist had grandparents or great grandparents who fought in World War II on the Allied side against the actual original Nazis. I would think that the ones who are still alive must be ashamed and appalled at their descendants’ actions and views. The ones who have passed are probably spinning in their graves.

Same thought for the ones who had ancestors who were victims of the Nazis, both Jewish and non-Jewish, and came to the US as immigrants after WW2.

    • Jennie Hix says:

I agree; from here on out, they will be called Nazis by me at least.

I remember reading years ago that 45’s father was arrested at a kkk rally. The fruit does not fall far from the tree. #45 has Steven Miller has been photographed flashing the hate sign in the Oval Office. Steve Brannon is a white Supremacist working in the White House next to the president and the New Gorgi is another White supremist all working in the people’s house. No one can tell me. #45 is not a white supremacist and agrees with DD. Notice he’s haven’t called out DD for calling on him to “look in the mirror and remember it’s them who voted for him to take America back”, because he promised them that’s what he would do. This is a sad day in America when we have so many Alt right and white supremacist next to the most powerful office in the country. I’m thankfully not in Virginia or the US for that matter, but seeing so much hate on the faces of these people makes me scared. The people who went out to counter protest are incredibly brave.

With all of the horribleness of yesterday I did laugh at one video of a dude who calls himself Baked Alaska, a Nazi youtuber. He then sits out and hands over his camera to one of his minions. Dude is you are leading the next holocaust, if mace takes you out of business you are f’ed. What jokes these so called men are, cowards and weak.

The damage Trump is doing to our country is hard to fathom. Every day he sinks to new lows. But yesterday was sickening. It was appalling to watch it unfold. I’m white and yesterday my husband’s cousin married a person of color in a mixed faith ceremony. We live in the Midwest and half our family is split politically. Everyone at the wedding had an amazing time and got along beautifully. Some of the groom’s guests were recent immigrants and I admired their bravery for coming because if I were them I would have so gone to Canada or Australia instead. I hope some of the brainwashed in my extended family learned a lesson this weekend. This is heartbreaking.

Are empty platitudes better than his obvious indifference? It angers me more when I hear “Love not hate” or any variation of Love folks that obviously want to kill non-whites. He’s dancing with the one’s that brought him.

Yes. If I could add one thing it’s that they are skinheads, but skinheads who were told to grow out their hair and shop at Old Navy. That way they can attract even more of the boy next door. Hitler youth looked so wholesome.

    • jwoolman says:

Yeah, I have no desire at all to “unite” with the white supremacist neonazis….

I kind of cringe at the “love” stuff also, but if you can bring yourself to at least not hate such despicable people – it actually does make you more effective in opposing them. Hate tends to be destructive inside ourselves. Fight the evil that they do and say but try to remember they were once babies who have since been corrupted. Such haters do not come out of nowhere. There is likely a lot of pain in their personal and family histories. Happy people don’t operate like that. This is true of bullies in general and should be explained to children when they come up against one.

If you simply hate such people, it just reinforces their feeling that they are the victim and must lash out at the rest of the world before they get hurt themselves. You can’t fake it, you need to actually chip away at the hate within yourself unless you want to become just like them.

Interestingly, I only hear this Love rhetoric wrt white nationalists or other racists. This type of compassion is never extended to other extremists. I, personally, am in no way interested in making these folks not feel alone or loved. That’s not coming from a place of hate, but a place of absolute survival and unwillingness to debase myself begging hate filled POS to see my humanity. This focus on how the racists feel vs the people they effect bothers me. I’ll save my love for those folks.

ETA: MA laws prohibit many of the guns that were being displayed in Charlottesville. Can’t own them here. What is allowed cannot be carried loaded on the Common and can’t be displayed on the Common and you must have a MA gun license to have a gun in MA. MA had no reciprocity with any other state for gun licences and will not recognize a license from another state.

      • Shambles says:

“Going to the capital of the bluest blue state…”

They do this on purpose. They go to places where they know they will be met with resistance, because this is what they want. They’re trying to start race riots.

Exactly, @Shambles. This is all about martyring themselves just to trot out the “violent left” strawman.

They also need a permit to march on the Common. Given what happened yesterday, they might lose any permits they had. Also, the city puts restrictions on what you can do in a large crowd here. No backpacks were allowed at the Women’s March and several of the other marches this year. I see backpacks in those pictures of Charlottesville – along with the confederate flags and swastikas and the guns.

  19. Moon Beam says:

Well guys, he’s sent out another dog whistle to his supporters with this one. I live in the North East, and people on the other side of the country would probably consider where I am to be pretty liberal. The local news facebook pages have stories covering the violence and riots and then the victims of the car plowing into the crowd. The comments are not condemning the Neo Nazis or White Supremacist groups. Here IS what the majority of comments, that people are writing on facebook under their REAL NAMES, say:
BLM and Antifa are hate groups, they need to be condemned too!
BLM is like the KKK, they are just as hateful
Antifa caused this. Why isn’t the MSM blaming them???
This all started because the extreme left tried to erase history in removing a statue of an American hero.
The group marching had permits to be there!!! Anitfa didn’t have permits and started the riot!
These Antifa protesters were bused in by the liberal leftist terrorist to cause violence!
Don’t block traffic and you won’t get run over!
This was all funded by George Soros to cause chaos.
The only hate and terrorist group in this country is the left!

And so on. And I mean this was the MAJORITY of the comments on many, many (to quote Cheetolini) pages, not just one. It is 2017 and people are excusing this behavior.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

It could be that many are horrified like you, but not showing up and not speaking out. The right wing is ever-more activated and they are well organized online. And it’s a myth that there’s little racism in blue states.

      • IlsaLund says:

There’s just as much fascism, racism and hate filled people in “blue states” as there is everywhere else in the U.S. This hatred isn’t confined to only one section of the country. It’s been lying low waiting for the moment to explode and take center stage again. And Donald Trump is their leader.

    • magnoliarose says:

Some are bots and people who spend all day responding like this in comment sections to push this narrative. However, some are real people. I wouldn’t be disheartened by that. Racists are everywhere and the public needs to know it.

      • jwoolman says:

Yes, remember all the hit-and-run pro-Trump posters we have seen even here, who post in Breitbart talking points. Web sites track such discussions and send people to the sites, and of course there are also paid trolls. Software easily keeps track today. I used to see this occasionally years ago (even on TMZ, the posters usually managed to insert some Obama hate along the way, they were so vicious that I wondered if he would survive his first term). The scientologusts are infamous for doing the same thing, we see them pop up in any discussions about Co$. People of kindlier thinking will also do something similar about issues of importance to them, but they tend to speak in a more individual tone.

This is why it’s important to counteract such posts when you can. Don’t let readers think such hatefulness and lies are really the way “everybody” thinks about it. Give them alternatives.

    • hogtowngooner says:

The mental gymnastics of all their “whaboutism” is truly stunning. It’s all deflection from the fact that they cannot defend their Nazi ideology on any intellectual level. Enter “violent left” rhetoric.

I’m trying to be optimistic and think that this is the extinction burst that comes before the Neo Nazi’s flame out. I don’t think they’ll ever fully go away but once Trump is out, and that’s going to happen at some point, they’ll stfu and crawl back to their mom’s basements. Yesterday I had to keep reminding myself that they are NOT the majority in this country. Most folks do not share these views. It’s obviously alarming that so many do but I need to hold onto that because, as a mixed woman living in the Midwest, it helps keep me sane.

    • jwoolman says:

Just remember how damaged these hate-filled people are. The 20 year old who killed and injured counterprotesters had been enlisted in the military only four months before he was discharged. That’s barely enough time to get through Basic Training. Something really serious must have happened for them to let loose of a willing live body. What did they know about him and should they have monitored him?

Maybe we really need psychologists and psychiatrists with nonviolent conflict resolution training to lead the counterprotesters in such situations…. We are dealing with a high concentration of various emotional and mental disorders here.

  24. Radley says:

Everyday we’re reminded why Trump is so dangerous. He absolutely has no conscience. He’s all about himself and he’ll happily accept anyone who is willing to feed his bottomless pit of an ego. That’s exactly why he’s surrounded by people who are stunningly incompetent, misfit, unhinged, hateful, fringe dwellers. Their number one skill is sucking up in order to stay close enough to him to push their own lunatic agendas.

Trump is garbage. Everyone around him knows it. But to the likes of Bannon, Miller and Gorka, he’s useful garbage. These are dangerous times. The inmates are running the asylum.

I’m enraged because yesterday’s mayhem resulting in people’s deaths is a direct by-product of Trump’s foolery. And by the way he’s war-mongering among countries that are overwhelmingly occupied by people of color, it seems he’s looking to reduce POC’s overall numbers via war. Next he’s gonna say Nigeria has been looking at him funny. They are POC and well…they have all that oil.

This is a very very serious mess. Everything we warned people would potentially happen in a Trump adminstration is coming to pass. I grieve daily.

  25. Wow says:

And why does that fool ALWAYS have to bring Barack Obama into this or something relating to his former Presidency? It’s like he’s obsessed with him! Barack is not the current POTUS, YOU are! This happened in YOUR watch and those weak-sauce tweets tele-prompter speech are not helping.

Based on what we’ve seen from Trump, those words of his could have hidden messages. “I’m gonna say this phrase but what I really mean is that I’m with you and I support your white kkkk rally. Good job boys!”

I trust NOTHING from Trimps camp, nothing. Whenever I see him, I see Hitler. And when Zara him or his team speak, I picture them with not so invisible white dunce-hats and lighted torches.

      • Anna Held says:

I think he meant that racism predated either one, i.e. not either one’s fault. Which is true, and a good thing to say, but coming from him was too little too late. ALL of it was too little too late. We know who he is.

      • Indiana Joanna says:

@Anna Held Thank you for your comment.

After letting this comment sink in, drump’s mentioning President Obama sounds like a dog whistle to his base. And it’s obvious to me that drump clings to his racist base for validation, because nothing–not right or justice or calling this latest racist rally and murder the horror it is–is more important to drump than adoration from a group of people who fully supported him.

      • IlsaLund says:

It was a dog whistle to his base reminding them that everything is Obama’s fault. The black man who dared to be President.

      • Fiorucci says:

While Obama was potus some (silly) people said he was divisive and made people less connected and more against each Other. And since trump has been elected it’s often said by (not so silly) people that he has empowered racists made more racists with his rhetoric etc. I’m sure he’s referencing these two (not the same in truth) schools of thought, Ie “not my fault and to show I’m unbiased I’ll even say it’s not obamas fault either.”

  26. tr says:

White Supremacy is part of America’s DNA. The US was built on racism and bigotry and you never really admitted it. Not after the Civil War, not after the Jim Crow.
The US needs to do what Germany did after the WWII. Admit their guilt and make it impossible for people like Sessions and like minded to have political positions where they can spread their ideology.

    • Esmerelda says:

At some point in the recent past I remember there was some public discussion of reparations due to the descendant of the enslaved and oppressed… totally derailed now, obviously, but I always thought the US as a whole might have benefited if that discussion had become a national conversation.

      • jwoolman says:

Probably community-based reparations make more sense at this point, but you’re right. A national discussion is in order. People whose ancestors were slaves have to lead it.

      • Radley says:

@ Jwoolman actually it’s the job of those who have benefitted from slavery to acknowledge it and start the conversation. It’s never the job of the oppressed to “fix” oppression. It’s the job of the oppressor. The problem here is that many who have historically benefitted couldn’t care less and others are too embarrassed and uncomfortable to discuss it.

And this part isn’t directed at you JWoolman, but what fascinates me is how so many white people not only don’t want to be part of the solution, but also don’t want to acknowledge that people they know and maybe even love are part of the problem. That’s why there was so much hand wringing and pretzel logic post election among white people trying to explain how Trump voters are just scared and desperate as opposed to just plain old bad people dragging the entire nation down. White people need to work on the issue of hate in their own communities and obviously that would filter into society as a whole.

      • IlsaLund says:

@jwoolman. Agree a national discussion is urgently needed. But it won’t happen if every time the subject is brought up, African Americans are told to “get over it”; “we’re not responsible for our ancestors actions”; “that was years ago.” It takes two sides to have an honest discussion.

      • jwoolman says:

The reason descendants of slaves have to lead the reparations discussion is because they are best equipped to come up with concrete plans that make sense. They know best the long-term consequences of slavery in their own family histories and communities and would have the best ideas about what forms productive reparations might take.

Whatever form is proposed, it will be up against claims that too much has been done already from the folks I’ve heard whine that “blacks were fine until Martin Luther King riled them up” and “blacks have been handed everything on a silver platter”. These are not imaginary inventions, but direct quotes from pale people of my acquaintance. I don’t think pale people will be particularly useful until some later point in the planning stage.

And realistically, nothing will get done if it’s left in the hands of the non-slave descendants. People focus first on what gores their own ox and their own family’s experiences. That doesn’t mean lack of willingness to support such plans when proposed, and their support will be needed eventually because of the numbers.

The Civil Rights movement was led by those directly affected by segregation and racial voter suppression. Others joined in because they saw the rightness of it, but the people directly affected had to be the main leaders and initiators and set the course. This is normal. People who are not feeling any adverse effect themselves from the status quo are unlikely to spontaneously work to change it. There has to be a change within the affected person or group, they have to decide that they will no longer accept the status quo. That internal change truly drives real revolutions.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

There aren’t many things to be proud of as a German but I am thankful that we were forced to confront our actions after WWII. And we never even dealt with all of it, there is still so much research to be done and I lose my sh*t every time someone says “Well, enough now, the past is the past and we’ve dealt with it.” No. The past is alive and well and being carried through the streets of an American city in the form of a swastika flag. So let’s not get complacent.

Having said that, we really had no choice. The US has marketed this idea of “land of the free” and land of opportunity and free from persecution etc. etc. for so long that the reality of genocide and slavery – which were really the foundation of the country – are easily ignored.

      • JackieJormpJomp says:

The way Germany has handled itself post WWII is exemplary in many ways. You have set a fine model for acknowledging, taking responsibility for, and making reparations for past atrocities. To this day your nation faces the reality of your historical wrongs, and continually takes action to stave off recurrence.
Your nation has much to be proud of.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

We tend to cringe at the word “proud” to be honest. I’m not proud to be German or anything else because it’s not an achievement. I’m very thankful to have been born here and I love my country simply because it is my home. Germans often get tired of the guilt but I think a) it’s a small price to pay and b) I don’t actually feel guilt but I do feel a big responsibility. Every country has its awful moments in history and there’s a responsibility to acknowledge them so we don’t repeat the mistakes.

      • Bethy says:

Absolutely Germany should be applauded for the way they’ve confronted their past. Japan should take notes. In high school, we had a Japanese exchange student. In history class when we got to WW2 (in Australia, the Japanese invaded the northern parts of Oz), she knew nothing about her country’s involvement, nothing about Pearl Harbor, the massacres in China, etc. I was astonished.

I don’t know if it’s true any longer, but in the 1980s, Japanese schools were not teaching about WW2. My friend Yoko said it was “shameful” to discuss it in her country. I remember our history teacher being gobsmacked that an entire period of Japan’s recent history had been overlooked.

This is not to dump on the Japanese, but to say the way Germans have taken a hard look at WW2 is the way to go. I only wish my fellow Americans could look back at Civil War times and reflect on its evils.

Hey as***le, Blacks and Jews are not the reason you’re a gigantic loser.

So the link to white supremacist garbage is close to the CPC. Canadians need to be aware of this.

Does this really reflect badly on the CPC , like did they know he was from rebel and what rebel was? That’s kind of scary if yes. But lots of people work and volunteer on campaigns. For better or worse, Canada does have stricter television laws and the CRTC (governing body of the airwaves) denied a Fox News-esque news channel on the basis that it was clearly right wing propaganda. But Rebel Media is filling that void and we must make our opposition crystal clear (peacefully, of course).

The King of Lies and Fake News isn’t going to condemn the WS because his WH is filled with WS: Bannon, Sessions, Stephen Miller, Gorka, and Chris Kobach(the guy in charge of Voter Suppression Commission). This is where the press fails us because anytime anyone brings up the fact that there are WS in the WH, people like Van Jones, Paris D, Wolf B, and other reporters lose their minds and act like this isn’t happening. When Wolf B tried to use the “you can’t say that there are WS in the WH because there is no proof” , the guest broke it down for him, saying Bannon=BB=AR=WS. Wolf then shut up and went to break. Another reporter did the same thing, and the guest broke it down (Bannon=BB=AR=WS) and then read some of the things written by BB. The fault lies with the press and the GOP, for they refuse to acknowledge that there are WS in the WH even though it’s right in their faces. It’s not enough to condemn WS when Bannon, Sessions, Miller, Gorka, and Koback are still walking around the WH. It was nice to see many GOP members saying what The King of Lies and Fake News wouldn’t, but now it’s time to put their words into actions. The GOP have a habit of saying one thing and then doing another.

I don’t believe for one moment that Melania wrote that tweet, she doesn’t even write her own speeches and was caught hijacking Michelle Obama’s speech. The press needs to be thanking whoever is running her account.

There were so many things wrong with what happened yesterday and the night before. Instead of focusing on Charlottesville, The King of Lies and Fake News made it all about himself(he isn’t to blame for the hatred, look at all the “great” things he has done in this country), refusing to cancel the Veterans press release because for him it was another opportunity to brag about himself, refusing to condemn WS, and blaming the counter-protesters. He didn’t even bother to talk about what happened the night before when masses of men walked through the streets caring tiki torches.

What was also disturbing were those Trump supporters who went on tv yesterday and tried to defend the driver. One woman claimed that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions because the driver could have been drunk or just lost control of the car. If you watched the videos, he purposely rammed his car into that crowd.

Something else happened yesterday that isn’t getting much attention. Immediately after the terrorist attack, Russian bots loaded up the timeline with posts accusing a 16 yo anti-Trump boy as the driver. It was quick and swift, with AR websites writing articles about him. It got so bad that he was getting death threats. He and his sister did respond, and it was very disturbing watching the bots attempt to change the narrative by falsely accusing an innocent boy.

The King of Lies and Fake News is 100% responsible for what happened yesterday and the night before because his entire campaign was built on hatred and division. He continues with the hate and division with the Muslim ban, refugee ban, Trangender ban, Affirmative Action lawsuits, ICE raids, the wall, and civil rights deregulations.

      I also forgot to add.

The WH removed WS from the Terror Watch Program/Counter-Extremism Program. This was covered by the press when it happened, but since then it has been buried and forgotten. This would have been a great thing for the press to cover yesterday.

The King of Lies and Fake News is always claiming that this country is in danger because of Muslims, refugees, and immigrants. A report that was recently released, stated that the most dangerous group are WS.

The press is claiming that The King of Lies and Fake News went off script when he said “many sides, many sides”. He didn’t. Remember that Stephen Miller is his speech writer. The press is also failing us here too. How can The King of Lies and Fake News condemn WS when his main speech writer(Stephen Miller) is a WS? Whenever the King of Lies and Fake News reads from teleprompter, the press calls him presidential and in that moment that validate Stephen Miller’s hatred. It’s disturbing how the press acts like The King of Lies and Fake News is writing these speeches, his two main speech writers are Stephen Miller and Jared.

They are descendants of those who have terrorized and victimized native people, African Americans, Jews, Asian Americans and anyone else who didn’t look or think like them. This has been going on in the U.S. since the founding of this country and will continue until it is fully acknowledged and dealt with. The U.S. can’t keep burying its head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t exist and act like “if we don’t talk about it” or “stop bringing it up” it will magically disappear.

Off all the things I thought I might witness in my lifetime, the open armed welcome of the return of Nazism by so many in this country was not one of them. The number of people defending this rally, defending the asshole who drove onto those people and then backed up and did it again, the number of people still trying to blame it on Obama and Hilary. It’s sickening. And frankly, disgusting hypocritical. The ridiculous notion of “If it wasn’t for us, you’d all be speaking German now!” is something Americans have been bleating out as a point of pride since the war ended and yet they’re joyfully embracing the very thing we supposedly fought and died to prevent.

That 45 refused to come out and condemn by name who was really to blame and had to try and qualify it by saying there was violence on all sides did not surprise me at all. I expected it. But the reason I can’t get excited that so many in the GOP condemning him for his response is the same reason I can’t get excited that McConnell was having his ass handed to him last week – each of these evil people has lost control of the monsters they created. The GOP thought they’d have an easily manipulated puppet to use to get their bidding done and 45 thought he’d have an easily manipulated group of puppets to blindly support whatever he said and did. And they DID get their wish on a certain level. But now the puppets have gotten free and turned into uncontrollable monsters and we’re all going to suffer.

  37. MRy says:

We need to organize. We cannot stand by and watch this. Where do we look to in times like this as its obvious Donald Trump is part of the problem? We need someone to organize peaceful protests against what happened in VA like THE Womens March. Can we go to those organizers and ask them
To plan a march against racism?!

I wish Barack Obama would speak and tell us what to do

    • Brittney B. says:

I just posted a comment about this, didn’t see yours first. There are lots of counter-protests happening today, and the Women’s March organizers are indeed behind some of them. Search for a “Solidarity with Charlottesville” rally or march near you.

      • cathy says:

But it needs to be big. Just like the women’s march in DC. I marched then and will march again. We DO need to do this.

    • Indiana Joanna says:

President Obama left us a brilliant road map and legacy on how to stand up to evil people who want to belittle, denigrate, and imprison anyone who does not agree with their racism and inhumanity towards others.

Look back at President Obama’s dignity, his extraordinary speeches, his tireless work for the disenfranchised. One of the first on his agenda was to sign the Ledbetter Fair Wage Act. What has drump done? He has attacked and rolled back every good thing President Obama accomplished. And he whines about and blames President Obama for his own profound intellectual and leadership deficiencies. Drump calls out to the basest, cruelest aspects of human nature.

    • isabelle says:

ITs rumored he is getting back into public this fall, we can only hope.

  38. Brittney B. says:

Fellow livid commenters! Here’s something you can do:

Look up a solidarity event near you. Go.

There are counter-protests happening simultaneously all over the country today (I’m going to the march in Denver), and it’s so important to outnumber these bigots en masse. If you’re white, it’s especially important to show your neighbors of color that you’re willing to stand up for them.

  39. virginfangirl2 says:

A rally where hundreds of people marching (remember white Christian people are the majority in our country and hold legislative power as well) think they are better than others because they’re Christian & white, marching to take the rights of millions away because of the color of their skin. No surprise counter protesters were there, you know, trying prevent another “New Order” decree.

  40. virginfangirl2 says:

Watching FOX NEWS right now, and the minion working for them actually said that the driver who drove his car into the crowd, drove the car into the white nationalist protesters, when EVERY other news organization has said he drove into the counter protesters.

    • LaBlah says:

No one needs to listen to the views of tawdry usual suspects. This is one crime where there is copious footage from multiple angles. White nationalists don’t wave IWW flags and BLM signs.

  41. Surely Wolfbeak says:

To anyone who lives in West Virginia, and wants to fight this monster and his agenda, you need to contact Joe Manchin asap, and urge him to stay in the Senate. As of Friday, the word was he was thinking about joining Trump’s cabinet (possibly to be announced tomorrow). This would leave an open Democratic seat in the Senate, a seat it would be up to the newly Republican Trump acolyte Governor of West Virginia to fill.

    Here is his contact info:

  42. Amelie says:

My friend who graduated from UVA now works in Charlottesville at UVA Hospital. I was really worried and texted her yesterday but turns out she was out of town for the weekend and doesn’t live near the downtown. She is also black which so I was hoping she wasn’t near anywhere this was happening. I don’t think there are enough words to condemn all of this. At what point are the non-alt right people who voted for Trump going to wake up and say “I was so wrong”?

  43. Anilehcim says:

Yesterday was the first time that I can honestly say that I couldn’t hold it in anymore and my feelings about the status of this country just came flooding out of me. I’ve gone from angry, to cynical, to angry and cynical, and scared…. it is too much. I cannot believe that this is where we’re at and the worst part is that it feels like it’s just so hopeless. On the brink of nuclear war. Nazis and wanna be confederates marching in the streets openly because they feel so emboldened. I can’t even begin to find the words to articulate my feelings, but I have to say that I’m grateful for places like this where people feel the same way.

I shouldn’t be surprised, but his comment about “many sides” knocks the wind right out of me. He has to be impeached.

  44. adastraperaspera says:

I am so sorry for the families grieving today. I can’t imagine what they are going through. I am also so, so angry that white supremacists are calling this debacle a victory. Violence at protests is exactly what they and their authoritarian leaders have been wanting to see in the U.S. They are now learning from Putin and Trump how to create false “leftists enemies” to justify the shift from talk to action. Things like Trump rally violence and the murder of African-American citizens by police has been practice for them. This evil must be met with firm, nonviolent resolve. It must be rejected and driven back into the shadows. Again, nonviolently. The number one thing we can do is get rid of Trump and his racist thugs asap. Remove them lawfully. He is providing more than just political cover. The money for all these racist, anti-government groups is coming from Putin, most likely. And of course Trump is happy to help. He hates America. He is glad to see “carnage in the streets” to justify his law and order platform. This murder is on his hands. Call your legislators. Keep giving money to nonviolent resistance groups. Show up to protests if you are able. We will beat back this menace!!

  45. IlsaLund says:

Ryan, McConnell and the rest of the GOP are complicit as well. They are willing to destroy the country for power & control.

  46. The following is bigger than you think. I witnessed this first hand on fb. “Oh they were trying to be peaceful until BLM showed up” BITCH you showed up with weapons already armed and that’s peaceful? How about a hate group is anything but peaceful and shouldn’t exist period. Racism is a disease. A disease that needs to be completely eradicated. The world is watching us right now and I hope they’re full of shame because that’s what we should feel. Shame you hate someone for no reason other than their skin color. Shame that you want to hurt someone just because you blindly follow someone who encourages it. Shame that you no longer think for yourself you’re just a mindless, braindead zombie. The song by the cranberries, “Zombie” totally comes to my mind during all this.

    • Lady D says:

Three good people are dead because of that WS protest. If any of them had any decency, shame would be the least of how they should feel.

  47. BJ says:

I really wish people would stop saying these guys are from some trailer park or are white trash.I guarantee you some of these guys work in corporate America.I guarantee you some of them have advanced degrees. They work in education,in banking,in healthcare…Enough with the dumb redneck stereotype. These people are in the White House. They are not afraid to say they are neo Nazis, white nationalists, etc.

Remember the good old days(#sarcasm) when Klan members wore hoods to cover their faces

    • cathy says:

that’s why it is so important to expose them. People on twitter are posting their pictures. Please go on twitter and retweet all of their photos. They need to be shamed and hopefully fired from their jobs if they work for a company.

    • adastraperaspera says:

True, and an important point. We whites have benefitted from racism and genocide for the entire history of this country. Most of us have some of these racists in our family groups. We have to shun them personally and politically, until they lose power.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

And then there’s that guy with the Arkansas Engineering Tshirt. Duh.

    • LaBlah says:

This. The majority are not rednecks, they’re preppy middle class fascists who you wouldn’t look twice at in Starbucks, in fact plenty of actual rednecks were in the counter protests. See Redneck Revolt.

  48. JackieJormpJomp says:

The photo of this Charlottesville police officer:

    https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/tgtxf7pjn2kgbxvydudl.jpg

    It breaks my damn heart.

    • B n A fn says:

The two police 👮 officers who died in the helicopter crash blood is on 45’s hands and the young lady that was murdered blood is on his hands also. Shame on him. Did he apologize yet today? Chicken.

  49. B n A fn says:

It is so telling that #45 is willing to start a nuclear war with NK “fire and fury the likes we have never seen before.” “And locked and loaded” for a nuclear war but is afraid to call out his base of white supremacist for a murder and hate crime. He’s scared to call them white home grown terrorists? IMO, all he was trying to do with the locked and loaded nonsense comment was to change the conversation because Mueller is breaking down his neck. Lock him up, lock all of them up including those family members in the White House.

  50. Disco Dancer says:

It angers me that when a Muslim or brown person rams a car into innocent people, these same alt-right POS will scream that violence is wrong and that brown people are a menace to their society with their racism. And then these alt right groups turn around and do the same and twist themselves into pretzels to justify this!

I thought that in the 21st century, the “first world” countries would move on from
Worrying about which skin colour is now
“Stealing their country” and would be smart enough to recognize we have greater threats to worry about: like climate change or nuclear annihilation. But nope, these last 6months of the Trump freak show has taken us back by decades. All the fights that we thought we have beaten back, are now surfacing back up again and with more greater vehemence than before!

Anyone who is sensible and compassionate should be ready to double down and fight harder to ensure that we can live in a world not driven by neo-Nazis and terrorists!

  51. CJ says:

Kaiser, Well written but Please stop referring to them as “Nazis”. This is what they WANT to be called and known as. They take it as a compliment and as “yeah, damn right, that means we’re getting our point across and they’re taking us seriously”. Refer to them as white-trash, bigots, dumpster fires, terrorists, or anything else that is both accurate and offensive to them. While the term Nazi may be accurate and offensive to ANY normal person, you are in fact complimenting and legitimizing them in their minds, when you call them Nazis. Let’s not feed their dumpster fire flames.

    • WhatAmIGonnaDoWithAGunRack says:

Please don’t use the term “white trash”. It’s actually incredibly offensive to peoplee of all races, as its very existence implies that “non-trash” is the default for white people. Like their trash ones must be specially noted, because it’s not the “right” way.
      Here’s a pretty good explanation:
      https://www.popsugar.com/love/Why-You-Should-Trash-Term-White-Trash-3169918

It’s an easy term to toss. You won’t miss it 🙂

      • jwoolman says:

Exactly. I don’t know the history of the term “white trash” but it is typically tossed around by people in all contexts who think they are so superior to the ones they are insulting. Let’s get rid of “trailer trash” while we’re at it. It’s all basically classist snobbery, among other things.

    • magnoliarose says:

I know what you are saying but Nazi is not a positive term and it is quick and to the point. Nazi. That is what they are. Neo Nazi is even ok.

      • JackieJormpJomp says:

but….they ARE Nazis. “Nazi” isn’t a slur, it’s an actual thing. And they are openly that thing.

      • jwoolman says:

The point is to make sure other people know what they are. Can’t speak for more current generations, but my generation was well steeped in what the Nazis were about and most of us would hesitate to go along with people making Nazi salutes or flying Nazi flags. We were born to the people who risked their necks to fight against Hitler. Our school textbooks were too out of date to cover WWII, but it was a common theme on TV shows.

    • LaBlah says:

Um no. They ARE Nazis whereas white trash is merely a classist slur which has no bearing on someone’s politics.

      • CJ says:

Yes you are so right, they ARE Nazis and Nazi is a terrible term, terrible people, terrible everything. And any decent human being would understand that and be offended by it and wouldn’t want to be associated with it. My point is only that they AREN’T decent human beings, and when they read about themselves and their terrible, terrorist actions in media being described as “Nazis”, they do in fact take it as a compliment and believe that they are “doing it right” then. So I only wish that media platforms were more careful in the terms they use that these terrible terrorists may take as fuel or glorification in their own backwards minds. Even though I know, you know, decent people know, and the awesome, educated author of this post most certainly knows that it is an accurate and non-positive descriptor; the “Nazis” themselves take it as a compliment.

  52. lyla says:

why won’t he say radical white terrorist? hmmm….

well, we all know why. big talk from someone who threaten nuclear war with Korea and threatens to go into Venezuela, but when it comes to nazi, he refuses to condemn them.

oh and did you read about his conversation with the governor of guam? he told the governor that this whole thing with korea is making him famous and that it will do wonders for tourism. cause yeah, who doesn’t want to go to an island that is being threaten with nukes…i can see the new tourism slogan now “come to guam, you might be nuked.”

    • virginfangirl2 says:

And how about using the term Radical Christians? I am Catholic but many Christian Republicans don’t share my religious beliefs. They take a very radical view.

      • Fiorucci says:

I don’t think that would be accurate as a lot of their ideas aren’t connected to the bible at all, though they may say they like Christianity and it should be the only religion in the us. Though I’m not really a Christian and haven’t read the bible, im confident that there’s not anything about superior races there, right? Radical Christian to me is those homeschooling people who keep their kids away from the world or those people who are violent with abortion providers

      • virginfangirl2 says:

You make a good point. I was thinking of the anti-gay & anti-Jewish propaganda they spout & they use their Christian faith to support these beliefs. But I think your right in saying they do not use their Christian faith to support superior races.

      • jwoolman says:

Actually, radical Christian has also been applied to people who take the Sermon on the Mount very seriously and are horrified at the likes of Trump. Take a look at the Sojourners folks (don’t know if the magazine is still operating, can’t remember if it was called Sojourner or Sojourners and my isp is too flakey to leave this page to check…). Or the famous American Catholic pacifist Dorothy Day. So it depends on the context and I suppose the generation.

We really need to stop using so many labels. The meanings shift so easily.

  53. jwoolman says:

Trump was definitely trying to claim that the counter-protesters were at fault. White supremacists, racists, neonazis form a significant portion of his core supporters and he knows it. He doesn’t want to lose them. He will continue to insist that the people marching against the Nazi flags were wrong to do that and provoked violence.

He was forced into publicly saying the guy who used his car as a weapon will be “brought to justice”, but that’s about it. The governor of Virginia was the one who made the strong statement that we should have been hearing from a President but don’t hold your breath waiting for it.

At Trump’s rallies, people were also making the Nazi salute to Trump. I don’t know what they were saying, I only saw it. That gesture has always been associated not just with nazis but with any situation where people are pledging personal allegiance to a leader (Romans used it, for instance) but today it is forever tainted by the way the Nazis used it to support Hitler and Trump certainly knows that. He was born just after WWII. That generation was saturated with WWII stories on tv, it was a common theme.

Trump did ask people at his rallies to pledge personal loyalty to him. He’s always been scary that way. My bet is that he was very pleased to hear that the neonazis in Virginia were chanting “Hail, Trump”. The terrorist’s mother said she thought her son was going to a pro-Trump rally and he actually was.

Now I really hope Pence and Ryan go down in flames in Mueller’s investigation. Next in line is Orrin Hatch, who not only has objected to Trump’s ban on transgender soldiers (pointing out that they are people too and deserving of our support) but also came out very strongly against Trump’s wishy-washy statement. Hatch was 8 years old when his older brother died fighting Hitler and is appalled that Nazi flags are supposed to fly in this country without any objections. Hatch may be older than Trump but his vision is a whole lot better.

  54. nicole says:

He is showing his true colours.

  55. Veronica says:

I cried watching that video last night. I’m so ashamed of this country anymore. I don’t know how white people can watch that and not understand why minorities fear and hate us. What could possibly convince them that some of us have their backs when more than fifty percent of us voted for Trump. When David Duke can stand on a college campus in 2017 and declare a white supremacist agenda while black police officers are forced to protect him. Why should they take that risk?

I’m ashamed of this country. I’m ashamed to realize that years of education and allyship still couldn’t prepare for how naïve I really was about hate.

  56. why? says:

I don’t understand. Didn’t the Governor tell the WS to leave? So why was the WS who organized the rally still giving interviews and more rallies today?

The WH issued a statement, but once again they failed. They didn’t put their name on the statement, but based on the tone we all know that it came from Sarah Hucakbee. Once again blamed they blamed the counter-protesters and didn’t condemn the WS. But what did we expect? Bannon, Miller, Sessions, Gorka, and Kobach are still walking around the WH, so there was no way that Sarah was going to do the right thing.

  57. Zeddy says:

The only good fascist is a dead one.

  58. jj says:

All I can say is that Trump doesn’t refrain from using the word “thugs” in his attack on journalists, immigrants, etc. but he cannot bring himself to use it when thugs are what they are. He is such a disgrace and hypocrite.

  59. mimchen says:

I’m devastated for all the kind and decent people in the US who have to live through this. I grew up in a former communist country and we were taught to think of America as a paradise. Movies, books and tv fed us the same narrative. So it was a huge shock for me when in college I started learning about the real America. Things that seem incomprehensible to me, growing up in a country with universal healthcare, free education, very strict gun laws, etc. And your elecion system is anything but democratic and representative. So much hate and racism. Christianity hijacked by the extreme right, poor people constantly voting and fighting against their better interest. I have a few American friends and I have family – my brother and cousins – living in the US. They’re not in danger right now, as they’re protected by their white privilege and they have very good jobs – but they’re seriously thinking about returning to Europe. They say America is no longer safe and that it might soon become an authoritarian state. I hope somehow good will prevail, but I don’t see how. For me, Trump supporters and other extremists – so-called Christians included- are unreachable. They simply don’t have that minimum of bare human decency that makes dialogue possible. Sorry for my incoherent rant. I’m heartbroken.

  60. FLORC says:

    Hey guys
Remember when we all were dreading a terrorist attack and how Trump would be of no use? Turns out we were right… but worse… Trump is pretty much tossing gasoline on a fire burning Americans.

  61. Rebecca says:

Those poor people died and this is the best he can say? I can’t anymore with him. I can’t read his tweets or his press statements or anything else he says. We all know what he is, we all can predict what he’s going say – something insensitive, pejorative, racist and/or sexist. It’s like we are watching a paranoid delusional egomaniac who thinks the world is the worst episode of apprentice.

I’m so worried about how he’s handling the tensions with North Korea right now that I literally have not slept in days. When is his party going to take a stand and real him in – after the North Korean Nukes hit the West Coast?

It’s time for at least a month long break from reading about anything Trump.

  62. Claire says:

I grew up about two hours south of Charlottesville (in rural redneckland) and sadly, I’m not at all surprised by this. It’s part of why I hardly ever go back to visit my parents because I just can’t take the backwards thinking of so many of the idiots who live there. 😢

    • Adele Dazeem says:

The irony of Charlottesville (I lived there for years and still work there) is that the city itself is actually quite progressive and the whole reason it became this target was the decision to rename a Lee themed park and remove the statue. Many of the white terrorists there, as with the murderer himself, were from out of state. Sadly the counter protestors were mostly students and locals.

  63. Kath says:

My God, what is happening to America? I don’t know how you will even begin recovering from this presidency and the hatred and stupidity it has brought forth.

    • FLORC says:

I say this with so teary eyes… this Jas always been America. Or at least a part of it. Always. And it’s a horrific representation. There will always be hate. Always be ignorance, pettiness, resentment, etc, etc… and when it comes out we all suffer. Then we all come together.

It was explained to me like this. No individual hates on a massive scale for any general reasoning. They do it because of individual reasons. That neighbor that has something nicer than you. That person that said something you didn’t like. That feeling you get just when you don’t agree and don’t know how to let it go. Then it grows and meets with other individual dislikes and hate. You bond over the same thing and direct that into a monster. I am heartbroken over this.

This is America. Thia is everywhere. This is not what defines us. Soon the good will come. The people that act instead of tweet. The kindness in strangers that isn’t covered by any media because it’s done simply because it’s right. Not because you want to be self congratulatory and be praised by others.
      This happens.

I’m so so upset over all of this.

    • LM says:

I felt the same way on Saturday night, Kath. I was thinking that as a country we are screwed. North Korea doesn’t have to bomb us. We are destroying our own country from within ourselves while those in Washington just stand back and watch it happen like it was what they had planned all along. And it was so easy.

And then came the outcries pouring in from the voices of reason and decency. There is still hope for us. We outnumber them. And good prevails. The thing that is bugging me is who is Trump really for? His own daughter and her children are Jewish. Does he not understand what a Nazi salute means? Does he not understand what it means that it is happening on US soil in 2017?

We need those tax returns ASAP. We need to see who his money is coming from and where his money is going.

  64. TotallyBiased says:

When Ted Cruz is the voice of reason in comparison, you KNOW Drumpf is spewing garbage again.

I can’t even think I’m so angry and sad over this.

  66. CharlieBouquet says:

My soul is a still in a fetal position. The tiki torch photos made me gasp, horror and fear. Slavery never ended, it’s our current penal system forcing disproportionate numbers of poc into manufacturing goods for pennis a day, while treating them like animals and denying basic rights. Decimating families and contributing to social breakdown of community. We have slave owners on our currency. We spent more on the military complex than we do on our people. This is and has always been a country built on slavery. Whether field, meat and agriculture. And it fucking sucks. I am raising a blond blue eyes son, and I will never worry that he won’t come home because he was shot by the police, it’s all of our friend’s and family of color I think of before bed, hoping they are all safe in bed too. Just soul weary.

  67. kodakay says:

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a bunch of racists in the White House. SAD!

  68. Sarah says:

I’m so angry right now, it’s off the charts. My family are oblivious to everything that’s going on and can’t see why I’m upset. One of them maintains Trump is just “goofy” and “harmless”. I’m so livid I can’t even speak.

  69. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I guess he’s saying it’s the fault of minorities like Jews, gays, women, blacks, etc., because they chose to be the object of another group’s hatred? Why is this man still in office? While I condemn Trump, EVERY REPUBLICAN IN CONGRESS is equally to blame, because they have the power to remove this bigot from office, and they choose not to.

  70. Ksenia says:

It’s upsetting to me that, though I’m deeply sad and vastly angry, at this point I also just feel overwhelmingly helpless, as well. Hopeless. And I despise Bigly and Co for making me and many others feel this way, overwhelmed, overpowered, and outnumbered. I keep thinking about how good and justice don’t always win out, how sometimes evil prevails. The world has been a cauldron of such gruesome human cruelty. And I’m just so scared that it will happen again, all this blind fury and hatred swirling together and simmering and seething and ultimately boiling dangerously and destructively over.
My heart goes out to the families of those killed. That the president won’t even properly, decently acknowledge and offer condolences to them is as appalling and as sadly predictable as everything else about this toddler tyrant.
