Joe Dempsie thinks Gendry could totally end up on the Iron Throne, bless

Premiere of 'Game of Thrones' season 7 - Arrivals

SPOILERS for Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, “Eastwatch.”

I could easily write about five hundred pages solely about how the showrunners are really f–king up the emotions in this season. I understand that they’ve been told the broad strokes by George RR Martin, and they’re trying to further the plot, but they’ve forgotten how to ground the reunions with the proper emotional beats. A great example: we needed to see Tyrion and Bronn reunite, however briefly. We needed to really have Jon Snow take a beat and acknowledge that Brandon and Arya are alive and well and back at Winterfell and that he has feelings about it. One thing they sort of didn’t f–k up though: the return of Gendry. We knew he would be coming back (he went to the premiere), but our favorite Baratheon bastard really got his moment to re-introduce the character. Anyway, the actor – Joe Dempsie – sat down with EW to talk about his triumphant return.

What he was told when he left the show: “After season 3, [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] told me Gendry is going to go off a little bit. It was always in their minds that he’d come back. I didn’t keep in close contact with them during the intervening years because I like David and Dan a lot and I didn’t want them to think there was some other motive [in reaching out]; that I was trying to wrangle my job back. So I kind of just left it. And Thrones, you understand, is bigger than any one of us. If you’re part of it, great. If not, you just get over it.

What fans say to him: “What’s happening with Gendry?” became part of my daily life, answering the question. And I could say with clear conscious that I had no idea. It’s been a meme-a-week, but I’m partly responsible for that by tweeting “still rowing” at the end of season 4. They even worked a reference into the show of that… There are some real crowd-pleasing moments this season.

Gendry is restless: “He’d gone back to his old life, but there’s a restlessness in him. He bored of safety and wants adventure and he’s itching to get involved and then an opportunity presents itself. He’s got his father’s blood in him and he’s a natural born fighter.

Game of Thrones: Avengers. “That’s the main thing, the selfish actor part of you reads that and goes, “That’s going to be great! I’m going to look cool doing that!” Part of this feels like Avengers Assemble coming together, this ill-advised mission North of the Wall. When you imagine wanting to be an actor, these are the sort of pinch-yourself moments. The Gendry-Davos scenes are really good. He’s sort of a surrogate son and they’re both from the same place. Davos kind of knows what Gendry has been through. And Gendry has never had a father figure in his life. They’re both still slightly scared and slightly fancy her, almost like they both have the same [evil] ex-girlfriend. His return and his role have been an interesting addition to the gang. You do find out a little more about how potentially scarred by the Melisandre experience he is. He’s not over it yet.

His prediction: “If he survives [the North of the Wall mission]… I would assume … I know he’s illegitimate, the last known son of the Baratheon blood line. I don’t know. He doesn’t seem like the kind of character who would make a play for power. But then maybe it could be something foisted upon him reluctantly…Well, obviously [he could be on the Iron Throne]! Everyone is like: “Where do you want to see your character?” That seems fairly unlikely. I feel like him and Jon Snow are forming a bond over the bastards thing. They’re also two of the inherently good characters in the series. Not that that protects you, but I think they’re quite a formidable force — if they can carry on cooperating…

[From EW]

Spoiler: I’ve read from some of the set leaks that Gendry does survive whatever happens north of the wall, so take that information however you want. I don’t think Gendry will serve much purpose beyond “friend to Davos and Jon Snow” in general though – like, there would be no movement to have Gendry on the throne, even if he’s one of the most decent characters on the show. Still… I wish Gendry would head over to Winterfell and marry a Stark girl. Arya and Gendry could have Baratheon-Stark babies!

Whoever ends up on the throne it won’t be who we expect…at least I hope not! I’d be disappointed if its Daenerys (waaaaay too predictable) and I think Jon Snow is too obvious. I would really like to be stunned.

    • Megan says:

Me, too. My latest prediction (it changes every episode) is that the Night King will be sitting on the throne.

  2. lightpurple says:

    Still rowing!

  3. Sitonit says:

I love Gendry and was screaming with joy at the telly when I saw him on the screen. Finally! I am a Gendry/Arya shipper and am all for their babies!

  4. msd says:

He seemed to say in this interview that Gendry on the throne was highly unlikely, but anyway…

I enjoyed seeing Gendry again much more than I expected to. I mean, yes, it was fan service but it was done well and I don’t think it’s only that; as the last Baratheon he probably has some role to play.

He and Jon bonding over being bastards and their ‘fathers’ friendship was amusing in retrospect … Gendry’s Dad killed Jon’s Dad. Whoops.

I’m not comfortable with Gendry and Arya coupling up on the show. In the books they’re closer in age but Williams still looks sooo much younger than Dempsie that I’d find it pretty icky. Sansa maybe, Turner looks older, but probably neither.

  5. Bex says:

The throne’s either going to go to somebody relatively unexpected or just be destroyed completely IMO. Jon, Dany or a combo of the two just seems too…neat?

I’m glad to see Gendry on dry land once more! He’s so much nicer than his dear departed dad, Robert was the worst. Half the people on next week’s wight hunt have links to Arya, surely she has to come up in conversation sometime!

  6. Grant says:

I barely remember this character on the show so I’m shocked that everyone is so enamored with him on this site…?

  7. mom2two says:

Gendry would be a shocker to end up on the Throne.

I don’t think there will be a throne at the end. However, Jon and/or Dany are way too obvious.

He is the last surviving member of House Baratheon, so should he survive next episode ,it’s quite possible…I really do hope there are more plans for him to be more then just Jon’s buddy and a possible Stark girl romance.

    • KCo says:

I can’t wait to see Cersie s#it herself when she finds out about his existence. Although, with this season’s opposite of nuanced writing, we will never get to see her reaction.

  8. Bridget says:

Almost all the great houses are done. The only one with younger generations is the Starks (Cersei isn’t going to have that baby if it’s real). Gendry is the last Baratheon, and could very well end up at the head of the House as a trusted ally from the conflict.

  9. InVain says:

We’ve waited so long for his return… I hope they have bigger plans for him. He was an important character before he started rowing. I’m glad they apparently listened to fans and brought him back, but I’m hoping there’s more purpose behind it than just bastard-bonding. Bringing Robert’s lineage back to the forefront is responsible to do in order to close out this story/show/series properly. Just my opinion though.

    • Incredulous says:

Well, Robert beat Rhaegar to death with a warhammer and Gendry is going to get some serious metal af practice on the wights (looking very forward to that) so maybe he kills Jon or threatens to because plot?

  10. detritus says:

Soooo…. actor is just as slow as his character? I jest. Mostly.

Also, can Dany die yet? I finally watched the last two episodes and spent most of the first one cheering for Bronn or Jaimie to shoot her off the damn dragon. Maybe her and Cersei can get locked into a battle to the death and both die. That would please me.

More likely she will die giving birth to Jorah’s child or something stupid. Which brings me to JORAH would hit that forever not that he’s descaled.

  11. Kate says:

I LOVE YOU JOE! MY BABY IS BACK!

  12. Va Va Kaboom says:

He’s right about all of the blatant fan service this season. While I mostly roll my eyes at it, I have to admit some of the crowd service has the little basic b!tch inside of me doing cartwheels lol.

  13. Joanie says:

Unpopular opinion: I agree with him.

The show made a point of Gentry going right up to Jon like ‘hey fam! I’m a Ba-RATH-eee-oonnnnn! Your dad went to war with my dad! Let’s do this!’ He’s calling himself Gendry Baratheon now.

Remember what happened the last time a Baratheon went to war with a Stark? Baratheon on the throne, Stark as Warden of the North (or King in this case).

Jon doesn’t want the Iron Throne. Even after it’s revealed that he’s a legitimate Targaryen, which is going to eff with his head big time, Jon is staunchly Of The North. He only reluctantly took the title King of the North. He won’t take the Iron Throne.

I think Dany will wind up back in Essos by the end, and Jon will yield the throne to Gendry, who will have become sweet on Sansa by the end of the show. Sansa will be Queen of Westeros when this is all over.

  14. Malificent says:

I accidentally commented on yesterday’s GOT post. Gendry and Dany marry to unite those factions. Jon becomes the semi-autonomous King/Warden in the North. Because Dany cannot have more children, either Jon’s or Sansa’s child becomes heir to her throne. Or Sansa marries Gendry and their child becomes heir. I feel like Sansa is actively involved in the outcome. And, of course, Arya will be The Most Amazing Hand Ever in 20 years.

  15. Her Higness says:

i luv gendry & hope and pray he and Arya hook upppppppp

  16. DesertReal says:

He could, in all fairness, be the one on throne when the music stops.
Dany and Jon are cousins (yes I know relatives…relating are nothing new to this show, but that’s usually reserved for the more morally compromised characters). There are a lot of little reasons that lead me to believe Jon won’t live to see the end of this series. Jamie won’t kill Cercei as long as she is pregnant with his child, so that leaves Tyrion as the younger brother that will eliminate her. The Starks want to restore balance to the north/get revenge, not rule the seven kingdoms. So. Jorah and Dany or Dany and Gen.
    The end.

    • Lily says:

They are not cousins, Dany is Jon’s aunt as his father is her older brother that was killed before she was born by Robert at the Trident. Also, Maggy the frog’s prophecy says Cersei has 3 children so the child she is carrying will more than likely be miscarried.

  17. B says:

A bit of randomness here, but does anyone else hope that Lady Stoneheart will come in by way of Sansa? It seems like she is being set up–there hasn’t been a major character death in awhile, and Littlefinger would be a great target for Stoneheart’s ire. You have Beric (who gives is re-up life force to Catelyn) and Thoros who can do the resurrection, and the Hound that would make them do it. The Hound referenced about life being fair for the farmer and his daughter when they stayed at the farm, so I could see him trying to get Sansa resurrected. Then Sansa would also be a link between the living and the dead.

Wishful thinking–missing Lady Stoneheart, and I could see Sansa’s deeply-closeted rage doing some real damage to her enemies.
