Jennifer Lopez on Las Vegas: ‘I don’t gamble, but I do eat a lot. Occasionally’

2017 Women's Choice Award Show

Jennifer Lopez is one of the multiple covers for Paper Magazine’s latest issue. The theme of the issue is, like, “Las Vegas” or even more specifically, “people with Las Vegas residencies.” Mariah Carey has a cover, as do the Backstreet Boys. And Jennifer, of course, because her All I Have show is going like gangbusters – it’s incredibly successful and, I would imagine, quite lucrative for Jennifer. We’re sort of living through Jennifer’s most successful incarnation these days – everything’s clicking for her, from a successful acting turn on Shades of Blue to the Vegas residency, to her myriad side projects like perfumes and clothing lines. Everything’s coming up J.Lo! Anyway, you can read her Paper Magazine profile here. Some highlights:

She thinks Vegas is the sexiest city: “I do, I do. I think people come here to let loose and have a good time, and there’s a sexiness to that. You know, it’s that inhibition letting go and just having a good time.

Her favorite Vegas shows & gambling: “I was really big into all of the Cirque du Soleil shows — I saw every single one of those. And then the restaurants change here all the time. They’re always bringing in the best chefs from all over the world to draw people to gamble, so bonus for me. I don’t gamble, but I do eat a lot. Occasionally.”

Her workouts: “No, I do. I work out in the morning. It just loosens up my body, gets me ready, keeps me strong. You know, injuries come when the muscles get weak or you over-work them. So you have to keep them strong, too.

The costumes for her show: “Yeah — I get a lot of bruises and it’s a hard show on me. It definitely is. And then I like to do costume changes. I like to really put on a great show. It’s not about just the music, or just the dancing — it’s the costumes, it’s the changes, it’s the sets, it’s the dancers, it’s the band, it’s the moments…. Anybody I work with is like, “She has to be able to perform in this.” [We’re like], “And yes, we want three layers. We want a kaftan, and then we want a bodysuit, and then we wanna strip down [from] that bodysuit to a smaller bodysuit, so can you do that?” And then we kind of let them go from there.

She’s crazy busy: “I love acting, and it’s funny because I do such different things, and I play in such different lanes. It’s like being this character here at the All I Have show, and then being Harlee on Shades of Blue, or being in a romantic comedy, or being a judge on World of Dance. It’s all different hats that I wear. And I like it. I feel like I’m always challenging myself to be better, and do better, and do different things, and to not stay stuck in one thing, and to grow. Now I’m doing a Spanish album, and I just want to keep doing different things and keep challenging myself as a creative person, you know? It makes me happy to be able to create like that and just do all kinds of different things. I think people get surprised because they always want to put you in a box, like, “Okay, she’s a singer,” or, “She’s a dancer,” or, “She’s a producer,” or, “She’s a director.” “You can’t do all of these things.” And it’s like, “No, I can, and I’m going to. And thank you. And you’re welcome.”

[From Paper Magazine]

“No, I can, and I’m going to. And thank you. And you’re welcome.” I kind of love that. I wish she was like that about all things, including her love life. Now she’s with Alex Rodriguez and I sometimes wonder if he’ll be interested in having such a busy, accomplished girlfriend/wife in the long term. He just seems like the kind of man – much like Marc Anthony was – who wants his wife/girlfriend to “serve” his every whim and need and give up her career. As for the rest of it… I buy that Jennifer is pretty straight arrow, because she’s always been like that. She doesn’t drink a lot, she doesn’t gamble, she doesn’t overindulge. How did she ever manage to stick by Ben Affleck during the Bennifer 1.0 era?

She absolutely has the speech patterns of a Bronx latina. It is treated as casual knowledge that she and her mom have been into Santeria for years. With her level of stardom could that possibly be remotely true?

    • JackieJormpJomp says:

Of course. All Puerto Rican chicks=Santeria.
      /s

    • Enough Already says:

Sorry Jackie, don’t come for me with the shade. I live in the Bronx and everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows a former NYC latino celebrity. Lopez is absolutely the only one for whom the Santeria rumors won’t die down. That doesn’t mean anything in and of itself but it is gossip and it is interesting. I

  2. JackieJormpJomp says:

I remember one of her circa 2001 employees saying that their schedule was crazy but even if they got to the hotel at 1am, if that’s when she had the time to squeeze in her daily training, then that’s when she did it. She never skipped it, she just did it when she could without complaining.

Every time I want to skip the gym, for the past 15 years, I think of that quote, and reckon I can do it even if “my feet hurt today” or “I had a kinda big lunch.”

Sometimes I think JLo is the new Madonna, but even better. Madonna works hard but tends to only have 1 thing on her plate. JLo does the workouts, the performing, the acting and the business ventures like perfume and juggles them like a champ and is aging like a fine wine. I don’t know how she gets her 8 hours as she claimed before but it’s clear her time management and discipline has been on point throughout her career. She’s like the oldschool type of fame, not super talented (acting and dancing > singing) but works hard and gives people something to talk about and a great business sense. I admire that.

      • JackieJormpJomp says:

I think she has discipline and work ethic like few others, and that is a gift and talent when played right.
I like none of her films nor music, but I respect this woman.

      • Pumpkin (formally soup, pie) says:

I think she has a mediocre voice and she’s a mediocre actress. BUT I do believe she has spot on discipline, she *is* super savvy when it comes to business and she gives her all to everything she is doing – no shade here, but that applies to bad guys as well. Whatever makes her happy.

      • SlightlyAnonny says:

@Pumpkin. THIS. She is not great at ANYTHING but she works hard at EVERYTHING which is why she is still here. Although I do love “Enough”.

      • mp says:

Well, shes a great dancer , right?

      • perplexed says:

I don’t think she’s Meryl Streep, but she’s definitely better than Madonna at acting. She has a comforting presence in her romantic comedies.

      • Eleonor says:

JLO is not that talented, but God she works her as@ off and she gets what she wants.
With Madonna and Beyoncé she has one of the most amazing work ethic in the business.

      • kimbers says:

I have respect for her discipline, but not her integrity at all. She’s VERY ambitious and is know to step, steal and lie….all with a smile. I think she has to hussle hard, because she’s not very talented, in either singing or acting. She just didn’t want to be a back up dancer her whole life and had something to prove to her family and friends.

I honestly didn’t think her late 00s comeback pre American idol would stick. Can’t find those performances on YouTube anymore, but her thighs rubbed together, so she was hiding them with dangling cloth and her skin looked like 💩. Who knew she’s claw back after stealing those usher songs?

  3. Jess says:

She’s photoshopped to hell and back but looks gorgeous as always. I wish she’d boot Alex, he’s just not a good dude and he’ll end up cheating on her, again.

    • kimbers says:

Ya i dont buy their relationship. They both need the “American sweetheart” press bc of their rumored attitudes. Remember that no one is allowed eye contact with her ever.

    • Tiffany says:

Here is why the A-Rod/JLO thing is working now. Alex is going through his ‘serious, businessman, I am all about my family now’ phase and JLO fits into that. He had a whole year to cultivate the second half of his life once he retired from baseball. He is hustling right now and he has a girlfriend who is known for it. Say what you will about Jennifer’s all around talent, but you can never say her work ethic falters as a result.

  4. MostlyMegan says:

She has the worst taste in men. I love her look and her personality and her work ethic – but why she chooses the gross guys is beyond me – when she could literally have any guy.

  5. hey-ya says:

…Las Vegas is very lucky to have these 3 super talented females performing…

  6. Pedro45 says:

The ring in the bottom picture is to die for and she should ditch A-Rod. That’s all I’ve got today. I’m in a self-imposed Trump news blackout. Bring on the jewelry and the bad boyfriend stories! My brain and heart and soul need a break.

  7. Cat says:

She is obviously a very hard worker and very driven which is very admirable. I will give her that.

  8. DesertReal says:

I’ve never been a huge fan of JLo, but I’ve always respected her hustle.
As an aside – judging by Affleck’s slimmer face back in the day- I’m going to venture a guess that he didn’t drink/party nearly as much. I mean, in those days he even dated Gwyneth Paltrow, the lamest broad to ever lame.
    Just sayin’

  9. monette says:

I love Shades of Blue and she is good in it. I know, I will hide in shame.
I respect her work ethic and I think she looks spectacular, for any age.

    • CityGirl says:

Don’t hide monette – I will be sitting right there with you watching that show without fail!

  10. TomatoGirl says:

I’m amazed at her energy – how can one person not drop dead after living a week like JLo? So you have to born with it? Discipline is great however I know if I go to the gym after a “kind of big lunch” I will throw up. How do these people, people like JLo keep at it and look and feel good?! I do not understand…

    • perplexed says:

Maybe she gets vitamin shots or something. I have wondered about her stamina level…

I like working hard (as in it gives me something to do so someone like Kate Middleton baffles me), but I do tire out easily.

    • Egla says:

When I go to the gym I need to be empty or else no movement for me from the waist down, everything might come up with vengeance. But yes she has discipline and also I am sure gets a ton of extra help to keep up. for instance vitamins and supplements are her friends and not necessarily a bad thing.
I have meet a guy who trained each day for two hours without failing as his job required him to be in top form. He would take some huge multivitamins and energy drinks prescribed by his doctor. He very condescendingly told me that for me to achieve a top physical shape like him would take time and money and a lot of sacrifices and still….
She is very driven and a hard worker but let’s not pretend like she works 16 hours every day non stop and has no time for anything else. She may have very busy crazy days and some very calm days. For instance her show requires her maybe two hours of rehearsals in the morning and one hour of prepping before the show and 2 hour performing or less I don’t know and the rest of the day nothing else. After some weeks of preforming she goes of filming her series for some weeks or months and maybe some days she approves of some new perfume or new model of clothing. Maybe some days she has a ton of things to do sure but still…. She is good with ton of staff around her

  11. Lucy says:

What can I say? I love Jenny. Bad taste in men and all.
