Channing Tatum pranked Jenna and made her cry before proposing

When your true love pops the big question, shedding some tears is a typical reaction. When Channing Tatum attempted to propose to his wife, Jenna Dewan Tatum, her tears weren’t necessarily tears of joy.

While promoting his latest crime caper, Logan Lucky (which I am dying to see), on BBC Radio One on Wednesday, the 37-year-old actor described how his 2008 proposal went slightly off the rails. He told host Nick Grimshaw, “When I proposed to my wife I did something pretty cruel because I thought she was on to me. I basically told her I never wanted to get married to try to throw her off.” He added, “I told her, ‘I don’t believe in the institution of marriage and I don’t think I ever want to get married.’ She basically broke down crying.” Ouch. I’d cry too.

After bearing witness to his lady love’s waterworks, Channing knew he had to rectify the situation. He said, “I thought, ‘This is not going well at all,’ so I had to propose to her sooner rather than later” and made up for his badly timed joke by proposing to Jenna in Maui in September of 2008. Sandy beaches, sunshine and a Mai Tai can right many a wrong in my book. It must have worked for the couple too, as they got married in July of 2009 and are the proud parents of a 4-year-old daughter, Everly.

Possibly to atone for his previous pre-marital misdeeds, Channing helped a BBC Radio One listener, Joss, propose to his girlfriend Emily on the air. Channing played Cupid for the couple and seemed to get a kick out of the experience. Spoiler: Emily said yes to Joss. After the successful proposal, Channing noted, “Joss was smooth. I wish I was as smooth as Josh when I proposed to my wife.”

Channing shared another story about his 36-year-old wife earlier this week during an appearance on The One Show. There, he talked about meeting Jenna when she auditioned for Step Up in 2005 and the unconventional quality that made Channing think he found his soulmate. He recalled, “The very first time I ever met her was at the auditions. She came in for a chemistry read, and she actually interrupted someone else’s audition. I think she kind of ruined it and sabotaged somebody. She was really nervous and had bad breath, and I was like, ‘That’s it – you’re mine. I’m marrying you.’” Well, what a…sweet…story.

It took me a while to come around with Channing. I still have yet to make it through a screening of Magic Mike, but I did like the Jump Street movies. He just seems like a pretty down-to-earth, likable guy. And, how can you not like a guy who recreated all of our prom photos with Adam Driver on the red carpet for Logan Lucky at the British premiere? Well played, Mr. Tatum.

There was a blind on Blind Gossip about an actor who would plant a positive story about his actress wife (free PR) to distract her from the fact that he was cheating while he was away filming or promoting a film. Everyone guessed Channing Tatum! So I am reading this post and thinking he must have been cheating again.

      • WeAreAllMadeOfStars says:

Why? Based on a totally unproven story? That’s unfair to say about someone without so much as a shred of evidence or even a read of the guy’s demeanor that would hint at him being a scumbag.

    • Abby says:

No don’t tell me that! I haven’t heard that anywhere. I love them together!

  2. Word says:

    Jenna’s gorgeous.

  3. minx says:

    He’s just a big knucklehead.

I could’ve sworn there was an article on cb on this before. Except I looked back and the most shockign thing I found is that in 2006 Channing was publicly making out with Amanda Bynes?

  5. SophieElla says:

There’s nothing charming or likeable about his self-described behavior. It’s cruel and manipulative at worst or at best, the behavior of a 6th grade boy.

    • Alix says:

Based on that pranking shit alone, the hurried proposal right after would get a big fat NO from me. Asswipe.

    • Jag says:

Exactly! I would have broken up with him if I wanted to get married and he said that to me. It wasn’t a “joke;” it was a lie. And like Alix, I would’ve said “no” when he proposed right afterward.

  6. Annie says:

He is actually saying SHE had bad breath and he thought he found THE ONE??!!
    Doesnot compute. :O

  7. lyla says:

um…isn’t this an episode of friends? chandler told monica that he didn’t believe in the institution of marriage to throw her off the fact that he was gonna propose.

The charming potato, gotta love him. I don’t find him overly attractive but he is just so dang likeable!
