Prince William & Kate won their lawsuit against French tabloid Closer

Royal family watch Tatto Preview show

Prince William did an event today in Oxford. The event was a policing and mental health conference and it’s been on his schedule for a few weeks, mostly because this week was supposed to be William and Kate’s big rollout as full-time working royals. They’d been on vacation for most of August, and they scheduled separate events this week, all culminating with the happy-family photos scheduled for Thursday, for Prince George’s first day of school. The schedule got tossed aside for Kate because of her pregnancy, but William didn’t cancel his appearance in Oxford. When asked about Kate, this is what happened:

Prince William admitted there is “not much sleep” going on at home since he and Princess Kate found out they are expecting their third child. A day after they announced the news of Kate’s pregnancy, William said the baby was “very good news” amid the anxiety of Kate’s ongoing struggle with severe morning sickness.

Kate is being cared for at their home in Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace as she battles Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG). She was also afflicted by the condition during her pregnancies with Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 2. Meeting dignitaries at a policing and mental health conference in Oxford, William said, “There’s not much sleep going on at the moment.”

He was congratulated on Monday’s announcement by chairman of Oxfordshire County Council Zoe Patrick. He replied, “Thank you, it’s very good news.” And he added the couple had been able to “start celebrating this week” after “it was a bit anxious to start with.”

I assume other people are taking care of Kate right now, like doctors and… Carole Middleton, one would assume. I think William would probably be judged either way – if he had stayed home with Kate to “take care of her,” he would have been criticized for dropping an event. If he did the event, people are going to be like “you should have stayed home with your wife.”

Meanwhile, the verdict has finally come in on Will and Kate’s neverending lawsuit against the magazines and photographer who published and took photos of their holiday in France back in 2012:

Five years after long-lens topless photos of Princess Kate were published in French media, the individuals involved are finally facing repercussions. Closer magazine was ordered to pay close to $120,000 in damages. Both Closer‘s editor Laurence Pieau and publisher Ernesto Mauri were also given the maximum fine by law — 45,000 euros (approx. $54,000 each).

During the trial in May, attorney Jean Weil, representing the royals, asked for $1.6 million in damages from French tabloid Closer, which published topless photos of Kate on its cover in September 2012 under the headline: “Oh My God!” While the royal couple did not appear at the court trial, during the process Weil read an emotional statement from Prince William expressing his continuing outrage. “My wife and I thought that we could go to France for a few days in a secluded villa owned by a member of my family, and thus enjoy our privacy,” William said. “We know France and the French and we know that they are, in principle, respectful of private life, including that of their guests. The clandestine way in which these photographs were taken was particularly shocking to us as it breached our privacy.”

Topless photos similar to the Closer set were also published in a number of other European publications, causing profound embarrassment to the couple who were on a goodwill tour of Asia at the time the photos appeared.

Eh. I know a lot of people are spinning conspiracies about the timing of this verdict and the timing of Kate’s pregnancy, but… I don’t know. I love a good conspiracy as much as the next person, but I think this is more of a coincidence, especially given that the verdict is neither amazing nor devastating. Most people thought the photos were wrong in the first place, but I think the casual royal-watcher just forgot about this completely.

So some people thought they planned to get pregnant a few months ago to have an announcement to conveniently pop out to overshadow a coming verdict which is… pretty neutral?
It’s quite amazing how in one breath I hear that they’re the dumbest people alive, and in the next their planning is beyond Machiavellian.

    • HeidiM says:

no, they planned the pregnancy to trump Meghan’s VF cover, the Invictus Games, and the engagement. The law suit resolution is pure luck! LOL

      • GiBee says:

Don’t you think Kate should maybe then write a book about how to instantly get pregnant when needed? For a woman often accused of being too thin and anorexic, her fertility seems to be magical if she can plan like that.

      • Nic919 says:

Kate noticeably gained weight in the last few months which is when speculation of a third child started because she goes from extremely thin, to less extremely thin. She did the same for George and Charlotte.

Also IVF exists now and she could easily do that and it would be kept quiet.

I don’t think she timed this for anything other than knowing that Prince Phillip was going to retire and then she would be pregnant by the fall when she would be expected to take on full time duties, especially with George starting school.

    • Nicole says:

exactly it doesn’t make much sense at all to me

    • LAK says:

This baby was planned like the others. She started gaining weight in the spring. Without knowing her medical records, conception wasn’t a surprise or miraculous since her weight gain is a tell that she is trying to conceive because she did it with the other 2.

In terms of timing, the only conspiracy i can believe is the one about work since Kate can’t or won’t work when she’s pregnant or with a small child.

She has proven adept at plausible reasons that get her out of working.

I’m glad they they won the verdict. There are oodles of celebrities posting nude selfies or doing nude magazine layouts. Be respectful and post pictures like that of people that want you to do so.
I don’t say this only in defense of Kate but in defense of anyone, famous or not, that doesn’t want nudes made public.

    • GiBee says:

Whether you like or hate them, this was a pretty nasty privacy violation.

      • Kristi says:

But they hadn’t NO need to demand ANY amount of money. Should have gone for a token sum, like Taylor Swift did – it’s about morality and freedom, not money.

Although it’s Graspy Katie so of course she’s got her hand out.

      • GiBee says:

I don’t think tabloids care about “morality and freedom”. Why not hit them a bit where it hurts?

      • Nic919 says:

It would look better if they donate the entirety of the damages to a charity, and not one of their own.

      • Jeanne says:

Closer makes a lot of money. Made a lot from theses photos. French privacy laws are stricts. They knew they would loose, but calculated that the money from the photos would be more important than the fine.
Token sum may make one looks good, but it actually encourage bad behavior since paparazzi press only care about money.

  3. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

The verdict was always going to be this – France has strict privacy laws. It will be interesting to see how the European paparazzi react to this, they are not popular with the British press primarily because they are always suing/threatening to sue them. I wonder how they (the EU press) will promote them now when they are on jolly holidays *ahem* official trips as ‘Brexit Ambassadors’.

  4. Zeddy says:

    Lmfao. I totally forgot.

  5. Nic919 says:

The damages awarded were only €50,000 each to Will and Kate. That’s pretty basic damages that acknowledges the breach of privacy, but clearly the court didn’t buy that they suffered in any real way. And far far less than the €1.5 million they were asking for.

I read a few comments on the French sites and many aren’t too impressed with these two.

As for skipping events, I think William should have attended the one Kate was originally scheduled to do. We know Carole was there so going off for an hour or so wouldn’t have been a big deal.

    • notasugarhere says:

If he’d attended her event, at least he would have been doing something more positive than last time. Right after the announcement of the pregnancy announcement last time and KM is “sick and resting at KP”? He went hunting in Scotland.

  6. penelope says:

Well, congrats to them on the baby and the lawsuit.

On another note, I’m looking forward to the day that William finally gives up and shaves his head. He’s going to look soooo much better & I think the look will suit him.

  7. Maum says:

William also said the level of harassment they faced was similar to what had killed his mother.

    • Nic919 says:

That’s not even remotely true. He needs to get some therapy because they aren’t the first celebrities chased by the paparazzi and outside of the fact that Kate was topless, no one would even care about this stuff. Fergie had a similar experience with the toe sucking photos, so it’s not even like he’s not aware that the paps can be intrusive in open settings.

  8. Vinot says:

Here’s my conspiracy theory: If it’s to be understood that Kate is 3 months along, and this is her 3rd child & at least her 4th pregnancy, we would have seen a lot more of a baby bump at last week’s Diana memorial. Added to that, she’s looked extremely Xanaxed & mood-elevated all summer, and I’m not inclined to believe that her HG is really that bad, since there have been conflicting reports about the severity of it when she had Charlotte.

Hypothesis: the surrogate just got to around 12 weeks and they need an excuse for her not to work. I’ve been saying it for months that I think Kate is extremely mentally unwell and at this point couldn’t work regularly even if she wanted to. This pregnancy is a smoke screen that her mom, William & the palace are hoping will give her more time to recuperate and balance out her meds/eating/etc.
