Angelina Jolie is ‘raised by my children’, wants them ‘to have a strong work ethic’

Angelina Jolie signs autographs as she arrives for her in-conversation appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival

Angelina Jolie didn’t just spend Monday preparing for the TIFF red carpet for First They Killed My Father. She also took part in the Canadian Women’s Summit, aka the Women of the World Summit, in Toronto. She apparently got to meet Justin Trudeau, who was also speaking at the event. The photos in this post are from her appearances around Toronto over the past few days. Here are some quotes from her conversation and TIFF interviews:

She wants her kids to be empathetic: “Connecting with and helping other people is a pleasure and a privilege. I want them to be with people in other countries, to enjoy them and celebrate them. Yes, I want them to have empathy, but that comes naturally if they’re exposed… My children teach me. I’m raised by my children. I see the world through their eyes and I’m better for it.”

She wants her kids to have a work ethic: ”It was a joy. I want them to have a strong work ethic. When I looked over and I saw [Maddox] and Pax working with the other crew […] it was just wonderful.”

Packing & traveling: ”Packing for me is like a military exercise. They’re getting older now, so the older ones help the younger ones, and actually they’re quite efficient.”

[From Hello & Divine CA]

I imagine if you were a Jolie-Pitt kid, you would have to be good at packing. I was a good traveler when I was little, and I was affected by wanderlust in my teens, but even then… my natural state is “homebody” and I do wonder sometimes if the Jolie-Pitt kids are going to want to travel when they get older? Like, will all of Angelina’s wanderlust affect them positively or negatively? Will they want to continue to travel constantly when they have the choice? Or will they just get an apartment in LA and stay in one place for two decades?

Also – Entertainment Tonight has some eyewitnesses talking about how all the Jolie-Pitt kids were very well-behaved during all of their TIFF outings. I think that’s true – the kids seem to be polite, curious and sweet overall.

I’d think they would continue to be travelers. It has been such a large part of their childhood- especially as she puts such focus on being empathetic world citizens.

In remember reading an interview of an indie singer talking about this kind of traveling life. She said she loved meeting new places but she got older and craved stability.

    • Yup, Me says:

My mother has a nomadic spirit and we moved around a lot when I was a child. I still enjoy traveling and I love the adventures that I’ve had but I prefer to have a home base and travel and return home rather than the regular uprooting and journeying we did when I was a kid. Interestingly, my brother got off the travel train before I did (moved in with our father when high school started so he could be stable) and then became a bit more of a traveler as I was settling down. Also interestingly- my mother now lives with me and has settled down (a bit) and become a doting grandmother!

Happy her (likely) last directorial effort has decent reaction. I knew once she dumped that fool critics would start being more fair to her. Some entertainment reporter said they were so hard on her because she has it all- or they thought she did.

Well, now she doesn’t have their dream man (overrated ugly man) they can let up some.

I’m neither Pitt nor Jolie fanatic, but your reasoning is just as ridiculous as my saying she got better reviews on this because of the sympathy factor. OR just maybe she learned something and improved by watching the directors of the (award winning) films Pitt produced the last few years or other directors she maybe has been around since her last outing. I don’t think jealously is the reason her movies have not been strongly reviewed, and some could argue the reason she even got the backing to make the films was because, in part, he has a good track record.

Packing for each other? Of course, she has an army of nannies, but she really doesn’t seem to be the hands-on mum.

Strange for somebody who deliberately created a large family with children who deserve and need extra attention, care and bonding.
