Jennifer Garner and Meg Ryan causing paparazzi trouble at kids’ school

Parents of students who attend the First Presbyterian Nursery School in Santa Monica are “outraged” at the paparazzi activity outside (and inside) school grounds. The school has enrolled many children of celebrities in the past, but currently Meg Ryan’s daughter Daisy True and Jennifer Garner’s daughter Violet. At least 30 parents have complained about the intrusive tactics of the paparazzi, and one family reported being knocked down by a paparazzo who shoved his camera in the mother’s face. Jennifer Garner herself has discussed the way the paparazzi taunt her daughter. Santa Monica City Councilman Richard Bloom says that he and his department are looking into the reports and hopefully sometime in the future a law will be enacted making it illegal for the paparazzi to approach past a safe distance.

The paparazzi are creating a “circus-like” atmosphere at a Santa Monica preschool, according to dozens of parents who are outraged by the chaos.

Among the celebrities who send their children to the First Presbyterian Nursery School are Jennifer Garner and Meg Ryan, both of whom have been photographed picking up their children by a crowd of hungry photographers.

City officials have received letters from thirty parents complaining about the nuisance caused by the paparazzi.

In the letters, the parents say the cameras have increased congestion on the street, the paparazzi drive recklessly in the neighborhood and photographers create a scene that is frightening to their children. At least one family said they were verbally assaulted by one of the photographers.

“We’ve seen parents get lenses in their face where literally it knocks them over,” parent Geoffrey Blake told KTLA.

Mary Hartzeil, the director of the nursery school says that the school has had famous parents for years, but the situation has gotten worse lately.

‘The school has always been a place that welcomes diversity and we have families from different economic, racial, social and religious backgrounds,” she wrote in a letter to city officials.

A local Santa Monica City Councilman, Richard Bloom, says the city will investigate “intrusive and invasive” activities of paparazzi photographers and videographers in areas where children gather. Bloom calls the situation “intolerable” and agrees that something must be done.

[from KTLA]

The paparazzi following around an adult actor or actress is one thing, but terrifying children with their antics is quite another – especially when those children are just innocent bystanders. No child should be subjected to that kind of harassment. Think about it – videos of the paparazzi crowding around celebrities are scary enough, but imagine if you only came up to the photographers’ knees.

I was surprised to hear that the only celebrities who send their children to school there were Jennifer Garner and Meg Ryan – and that they were enough to cause such issues. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be a hands-on celebrity mom in Hollywood. I have to wonder if the paparazzi would be as intrusive if a nanny dropped off Violet instead. But that’s just not Jennifer’s style.

It was refreshing that the parents weren’t blaming the incidents on Meg Ryan and Jennifer Garner themselves, and hopefully the problem will be solved. Those parents aren’t going to let this keep going on for much longer.

And it’s day after day after day. How many pictures do we need to see of Violet being dropped off and picked up by her parents?…ridiculous. The paps should be banned from being anywhere near these children and their schools. Hopefully a law will be passed to stop this madness before a tragedy happens.

  2. Cinderella says:

They need to pass an ordinance to keep the photogs at a safe distance from the school. 500 feet would probably be a good start.

  3. Tess says:

    I don’t condone harrassing kids.

But there’s a simple solution to this particular problem.

Since celebs are paid huge saleries for their “work”, perhaps they could pony up for security in this type of situation, so that others (not so well paid) are not inconvenienced—or endangered—because of the celebs’ highly lucrative celebrity status.

  4. Annie says:

Honestly, is it all that surprising/newsworthy that Violet goes to school? Leave the girl alone and leave her parents alone. It’s so weird.

  5. RobN says:

Classic. Blame the paparazzi for stalking the kids and then post all the pictures. Maybe if you stopped posting them, and the paparazzi didn’t get paid for them, the stalking would take care of itself?

  6. me says:

I really think the paparazzi needs to take a step back, these people really get into celebrities faces and taunt for reactions … and if a celeb reacts (because lets face it they are human after all) they get to sue for being in their face in the first place. Children need to be off limits … end of story .. laws need to be placed and enforced.

  7. Susette says:

This is weird to me. Of all the celebrities in Hollywood with kids at schools, why would Jennifer and Meg’s kids be getting so much attention? It’s not like either one of them are hot commodities.

And yes, a law should be set up to keep paps at least 500ft from all schools and hospitals.

  8. clare says:

Get Hugh Grant over there pronto!

  9. Susette says:

    Clare: LOL

Jennifer knows the chaos she causes when she goes to the school. She’s even commented that the paps not only hit the parents but also the kids. So I don’t know why she doesn’t let the nanny do the school runs. At least mix it up and not come every single day. I have to assume that Violet’s school doesn’t have any security. Violet is the only celebrity child that I see on a regular basis attending school.

  11. dew says:

Qwueenie(sp?) would be a better choice than Hugh Grant, if she cleaned up her language while around the kids.

While I think it’s kind of cool that Jen/Ben want their kids growing up normal, um, how the heck is being hounded by crazed paparazzi normal? And to subject this onto other children, nope, instead of being cool, it’s just stupid and inconsiderate. At least until something’s done. Oh, and the school should be doing more too.

  12. Wresa says:

I think the OBSESSION with celebrity kids is on its way out. The occasional pic at a special event is fine, but its out of control that this girl is photographed doing mundane, everyday activities.

  13. Annie says:

So you think that she shouldn’t take her own daughter to school? To use the nanny instead?

Will you also then turn around and condemn her when pictures surface of the nanny taking Violet to school? “OH Jen can’t even take her daughter to school!”

  14. Dirty Martini says:

Tazina is right. We see pics of Violet being dropped off at school weekly. Violet’s cute. Without Makeup and clothes, Jenny looks like any Mom USA. We need a weekly picture to reconfirm this 52X a year?

Geez. Give it up, papparazi. Go take more pics of Kate Hudson. At least she changes boyfriends weekly, so her pics are something new……..

  15. Ned says:

While Meg has never used her child as a way to garner attention, Jennifer Garner has no career if not through Ben’s name and his children.

Garner branded herself as some sort of 50s wife (she is far from it) and being seen in the media as a “MOTHER” is part of her brand.

Now, not only is her own child under pressure (and “trained” to smile and pose with her mother), but other families have to suffer.

How about not notifying the paps about your visit to the marker/ park/ other family oriented settings with your daughter who is being used like in a circus.

Garner started this moving circus and she can end it.

i don’t get why there is a market for these pix. i don’t get why people care about seeing pix of celebs kids. boring.

  17. Kelly says:

    I agree with Annie 100%.

  18. Alin Azmi says:

i wonder what would happen if Suri Cruise goes to school soon…

  19. Michelle says:

It’s one thing if a celeb is strolling down Robertson Boulevard seeking attention. But to invade not only a celeb’s privacy but also that of their children? Disgusting. There’s a time and a place for everything- intruding a person’s private life like that is neither.

  20. lio says:

“No child should be subjected to that kind of harassment”.
So why are posting her photos?

  21. teehee says:

I cant beleive they DONT already have laws to ban papparazzi from school property (at least a certain distance!) !!?!? WHAT? Shows how much priority or consideration is given to children.
Just like the paps need to get out of the stores and away from driveways/houses — certain places are unsafe and not appropriate for that sort of havoc/invasion.
Can they get that close to hospitals? ER entryways? Im asking…

“Jennifer knows the chaos she causes when she goes to the school. She’s even commented that the paps not only hit the parents but also the kids. So I don’t know why she doesn’t let the nanny do the school runs”

Maybe because she is the child’s MOTHER and wants to parent her kid and not pay others to do it for her.

Garner and other celebs are not at fault in this type situation. It is 100% on the paps. They should have the sense to back off where kids are concerned, and if they don’t then the law should help them acquire some sense by locking them up until they learn that children are not fair game, no matter who the parents are.

  23. Please says:

Oh Please, give me a break. If you don’t want the paps-mears there, DON’T CALL THEM! It’s no secret Jen continueoulsy whores out her daughter.

  24. Magsy says:

Give the other parents, other students, and the school a break, private tutor those little Hollywood tots.

  25. Grandizer says:

    People catch a clue…
Jen is NOT calling the Paps. If she was and something happened the paps would immediately be able to point the finger at her and she would be vilified.

The solution to this problem is SIMPLE.

If the star is at a gig where they are being paid, or they are promoting something they are expected to do, the paps can take all the pics they want.
If they are out with family, friends, acquaintances, then NO, the paps should have NO ability to interrupt their lives as they do.
The fact that this has been allowed for so long is the joke with the legal system and the people trained to enforce the legal system.

Props to Jen for being a mother.
Big FU’s to the paps for their role in this debacle.

The fuzz should be there enforcing traffic regulations.
