I can’t believe Allure used this extreme closeup of Kim Kardashian for their cover. It’s one thing to do any unconventional cover shot for a beauty magazine, but it’s a whole other thing when you basically zoom in on your cover subject to the point where no one can even really make out who she is. Anyway, Kim “covers” the latest issue of Allure, likely to promote her makeup line, which came out before Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line. I’m assuming that Fenty Beauty will eclipse Kardashian Beauty, but I’ll wait to see the numbers on it (and hey, maybe both lines will be successful). Kim talks to Allure about the Paris robbery last year, her fitness level and how her family isn’t big into gift-giving…? You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
Her workouts: “I’m, like, the most fit I’ve ever been,” she says. How do you get in shape if you’re Kim K.? The same way you do everything: Instagram. You go and you find “this bodybuilder on Instagram” and you contact her. You find someone who, as Kim K. tells it, “had an amazing transformation after she had a baby.” Now Kim’s working out an hour and a half a day.
Whether there’s an age limit on getting naked in editorials: “Yes. I’m like, I’m going to tone it down. But then I’m like, Wait, I can’t be doing it in 10 years, so — I might as well. I don’t know what the age cutoff is.”
She & Kanye don’t do a lot of gift-giving for their kids: “We don’t do gifts. [Kanye and I] talk about it all the time, about not getting too much and trying to be as grounded and well rounded as possible. I don’t like presents anymore. We just did absolutely nothing [for our anniversary]. We spent two days in Santa Barbara, and we slept.” Then she remembers: “You know what? I think we went to IHOP. That’s what we did.”
She was scared to go to Paris before the robbery last year: She’d been scared to go on that trip. She was afraid of a terrorist attack. She’d never experienced anxiety like that before. She even went to a therapist about it. And North, sensing her mother’s anxiety, wanted to reassure her. “She gave me a little plastic treasure box, and she put her little jewels in it — like fake little plastic jewels — and she was like, ‘Mommy, this will keep you safe when you go to Paris.’ To have something really sweet like that is more important to me than all the jewelry,” she says. She tells me she takes it everywhere with her.
Society’s ideal for a woman: “I mean, I don’t really live by society’s ideal so what I would hope is just that women are equal. Like women in every way—whether it’s equal pay, equal rights, I just feel like women should have the same rights as men. I definitely think that women should just have the rights of what they want to do with their bodies, and I think that’s really frustrating when certain rights are being taken away. I just feel like we’re moving backwards when we’ve come so far.”
The Allure piece is a bit overwritten and overwrought, but I appreciated the fact that Allure treated her somewhat seriously, even if I don’t really believe every word out of her mouth. It might be the case that Kim had a come-to-Jesus realization after the robbery that she wants to live life with less superficiality and less materialism. But let’s not pretend that she’s always lived her life that way! Please, Kim and Kanye have always been materialistic people. That’s one of the reasons why they made sense together, and they seemed intent on raising their kids to worship the dollar and material items too. Maybe Kim is different post-robbery – she wears less jewelry, she travels with more security, she seems to spend more time with her kids. I wonder how Kanye has dealt with that shift in her.

This is Kris Jenner’s daughter, which means she is the epitome of a materialstic mindset. Even though she went through that robbery, don’t try to convince of that humble new narrative, because I am not buying what you are selling.

Have you ever watched an episode of KUWTK? It’s hilarious. All hear is “like,” back and forth. I haven’t watched it in years, but I’m gonna assume it hasn’t changed much.

Kim has definitely become more self-aware I think. She’ll never be an intellectual but she’s in her 30s, she’s married, she has kids, she was a victim of an awful crime–she’s toned it down a lot. Her business model is essentially based on shock value: what can she do next? She’s aware of that. But it’s what pays the bills.
I think the robbery and Kanye’s breakdown changed both of them. I believe they both reassessed their lifestyle and decided their family was more important than showing off how many cars they owned or how much jewelry was in their possession.
JMO, but it was a wakeup call for them and they took that call seriously.
