Angelina Jolie is really campaigning for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, huh?

Angelina Jolie arrives for her Q&A at Directors Guild of America Theatre

I totally forgot about these photos, my bad! Angelina Jolie was seen at the Directors Guild of America Theater in LA last Friday. Note her “business sack” look – this is her professional sack-wear. And I kind of love it. She looks awesome. She should wear black turtlenecks/cowl-necks more often.

Jolie was attending a screening and a Q&A session, which was likely part of her Oscar campaign. There’s some debate going on about Angelina’s influence in Hollywood, whether she can really campaign for an Oscar – for Best Foreign Film, no less – without Brad’s influence. My take is that she totally could wage an Oscar campaign on her own… in theory. Like, if she was campaigning for an Oscar for acting in a prestigious film, she could totally make that happen. But it’s trickier with Jolie-as-director and I think she knows that. Which is why she seems to be playing it by the book so far.

Netflix also cut another trailer for First They Killed My Father. This one is visceral.

So, what else is going on with Angelina? I don’t know. There are two tabloid-y stories circulating about her, both of which are very negative. Gossip Cop debunked one of the stories, the one about how Angelina is feeling more peaceful a year after she filed for divorce, and that she’s “re-adjusting to single life.” Gossip Cop says the original story, from Hollywood Life, is trash. In Touch Weekly also has a story about Angelina “losing control” of the children, because they are wild and live without rules. I don’t know… considering how much we saw of the kids in Toronto, this one just doesn’t fly? The kids seem fine. They seem to adore their mom. Which is possibly the point of the ITW story – Brad is the “hero” because he wants to swoop in and make all of these demands about how the kids should be raised. He didn’t have a big issue with their peripatetic lifestyle when Brangelina was happening. Why is he complaining now? Because the kids don’t want to spend time with him?

No on the film. and no on the “hero dad” slant. Do I think she has serious boundary issues? Yes absolutely and TIFF solidified that for me and I felt this way even when they were married. However the kids clearly have a stable home with her so the slants are gross

  2. whatWHAT? says:

she looks like she stepped out of a fashion spread from the 70s. and I mean that in a good way, she looks so metropolitan fab. LOVE THOSE BOOTS.

    • minx says:

Yes, love the look! And I’m envious because Chicago has been sizzling in the 90s for a week and I want to wear fallish clothes.

      • Nancy says:

Same in Cleveland, it’s been in the nineties for a week, supposedly today is the last day, But clearly global warming has nothing to do with the hurricanes, quakes or freakishly hot weather. Nope. She does look better covering her limbs. Soon we will see her and all of her posse of kids at some premiere or bookstore, all looking adorable, Vivienne and Shiloh in their favorite suits….lol. Not a fan but can’t love em all!!

      • whatWHAT? says:

same here…90s over the weekend and yesterday. I’m ready for sweater/boot weather!

      • lucy2 says:

Same here in NJ. I did get to sit on the beach for a bit yesterday, but I’m so ready for fall weather.

      • Beth says:

I love fall/winter clothes, but I won’t be wearing them soon. It feels like it’s a million degrees and the air is thick and sticky with humidity here in central Florida. Can’t wait for the one chilly month this winter

    • GiBee says:

Her hair has been looking really full/bouncy/glossy lately. I’m jealous – mine’s been oddly flat yet frizzy for a week.

    • Mermaid says:

This is my favorite outfit I think I’ve seen her in since the Lara Croft days. She looks awesome here. Love everything about it.

  3. Soni says:

Can we get an ID on her boots? I want them!

    • Jazzie30 says:

Of course I cannot be certain, however these boots look a lot like Aquatalia’s Rhumba tall stretch suede boot. I love this brand. Comfortable and water resistant. The Rhumbas are $750. I just bought a pair in oxblood.

There are so many good foreign films out there it would be disappointing to see this film win only bc a white American womam was so heavily involved in its creation and production it might feel a bit false. Not to take anything away from the film but these foreign film awards can launch careers of unkown foreign artists.

  5. Clare says:

I don’t mind if she managed a nomination for best foreign film – if it brings more attention to the category then that’s a good thing.

Also this Brad the saviour narrative his team keep trying to float is so transparent…I mean either those kids adore their mum or she very much has them under control, because they were nothing but gracious and beautifully behaved in every public outing she has taken them to…not easy with kids who hate you and are out of control.

  6. Slowsnow says:

I haven’t watched the film (and from a previous trailer it seemed really interesting, casting techniques notwithstanding) but I would be really disappointed if Angelina Jolie fell in the category of foreign film. I know
It’s not down to the director only but also to the producers, the crew, the actors but really, it’s an American perspective (as in artistic take).
The foreign film category is one of the few instances where HW lets a little otherness in.

    • Magdalene says:

Really? Just because Angelina is involved that should negate all the local talent that had to be trained and worked hard to get this movie done. All the actors in the movie are not professionals but they should not be lauded and their career should not be launched because Angelina is involved.

      • pwal says:

Well, there is still a question about how she elicited performance from the aforementioned ‘local talent’. She successfully averted that minefield during this initial push. If it looks likes she will make the cut, you have to wonder if someone will come for her neck at that point.

    • Aiobhan Targaryen says:

There really isn’t that much diversity in the foreign film categories over the other categories. While Japan, China, and Taiwan and a few other countries have had films in that category this list is as overwhelmingly white as the acting categories.

France, Denmark, Sweden, Italy and one or two other European countries have dominated this category since they first started giving out Oscars in this category. Something like 56 Oscars have been given to white countries, so it is not as other as you are trying to make it out to be.

      • Whoopsy Daisy says:

But non-english speaking European countries ( with the exception of maybe Scandinavia, France, Italy and Germany) are almost as equally foreign to American audiences as are Southern American or Asian or African countries. I doubt the average American knows more about Romania or Belarus than he knows about China or Colombia? Or that directors and actors from these countries have more opportunities?

      • Kate says:

It’s not just about white vs. POC. It’s about diversity in filmmaking culture and expression, and opportunities for people outside of Hollywood to have their work recognised globally.

French films feel French. German films feel German. Russian films feel Russian. It’s not just about what they depict, it’s the way they depict things.

First They Killed My Father is a Cambodian story filmed in Cambodia, but the filmmaking is extremely American. No one who understands Cambodian culture at all would ever mistake it for being directed by a Cambodian.

  7. Maya says:

89% critics on Rottentomatoes and 84% public so Way to go Angelina.

Netflix and Angelina are totally going for Oscar glory and good for them.

Netflix wants to be taken seriously and Angelina wants the movie to be recognised for her son, close friend Loung and Cambodia.

PS: just saw some pictures of Angelina shopping with Loung and she looks absolutely gorgeous. She has gained weight and she looks happy.

  8. Yeahright says:

    In touch? Really.gif

    • pwal says:

Of course, In Touch. Since Brad hasn’t been seen at all during the FTKMF promos, some are desperate to interject him into the ‘Angelina is a superwoman’ narrative and Brad is getting his Boris and Natasha-type machinations on…

  9. Val says:

The film was lengthy as hell…the actors were great but both the scenario and the directing were cheesy.
    Not the subject , though.
I very much preferred Ken Burns’ docu on the Vietnam War. THIS one is a must see.

    • B n A fn says:

Strange, when I go to watch a good movie with great actors I find the time flys, I never think about the time. Some people who are not a fan of Angelina are always the first to see her movies just to go on line and bitc$ about. Anyway, we all have a right to our opinion. I hope Angelina wins an oscar with this. Good luck to her.

      • Val says:

First, it is not a matter of being a fan of AJ, or not. I watch a lot of movies, documentaries and tv shows… online. I picked hers because I was just curious about the Khmers Rouge and how this tragic episode of the Cambodian History would be filmed.
Second, De Niro is a great actor…but to say the least, his latest movies were not “great”. So, yes, great actors can play in sh§tty movies.
But of course, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion !

    • GiBee says:

The Ken Burns doc is great but… that’s a different war. I don’t think they’re intrinsically comparable.

  10. Sophie says:

Lots of people on twitter are praising the film. The film is not made from an American perspective. Loung ung wrote the book, co-wrote the screenplay, produced & was an adviser on the film. So was rithy pahn. The cast & thousands of crew apart from a handful were all Cambodian. This is very much a Cambodian film & has every right to push for foreign film nomination. As for casting? Loung spoke about it last week. Angelina & rithy have also addressed it. You only have to watch the making of & Q&As from past two weeks & interviews to see there was no harm done to anyone. As for tabloids? They wouldn’t know the truth, if it slapped them in the face.

  11. truth hurts says:

I hope she is at least nominated just for effort only. She did a film that was very hard to get made and very emotional to tell for that country. She did an excellent job with those non actors but I thought the little girl was exceptional. Great job
By the way this b***ch is gorgeous esp with the bouncy hair.

    • LaBlah says:

I’m a bit wary of the “hard for the country to tell” narrative, not so much what you’ve said but what Jolie herself said, there have been Cambodian made films, books and other art about this period. Yes for many people who lived through Year Zero it would be confronting but there’s this really patronising view that it wasn’t done until the white saviour came along. Jolie herself made some ridiculous comments about how people there needed to be told their own history. For someone who claims to know a country she comes off as being utterly clueless.

  12. Nibbi says:

forgetting Angelina pictures?? Nonnnn, not allowed Kaiser 😉 😉

c’mon man, times are dark, the news is hard, we need Angelina pics more than ever these days 😉

(such a Stan i know, but i love her face, and it’s pleasant to see her killing Fall clothes 🙂

  13. Ana says:

Maybe the Golden Globes will nominate her just to have her go to their shows, they always do that.
