Lucy Hale to troll calling her anorexic: ‘you should be ashamed of yourself’

Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars, 28, has been open and honest about the fact that she suffered from anorexia in the past. In 2012 she told Cosmopolitan magazine that she used to go days without eating and that she used to work out for hours at a time. She seems to have gotten a handle on it, although she’s still a small person. Anyway Lucy posted the above photo of herself to which a male troll responded, telling her to “eat a hamburger” and that “No straight men are signing off on that anorexic look,” as if a woman’s main purpose in life is to be attractive to misogynist assholes. Lucy schooled the guy and even followed up on it when he responded.

Then the dude tweeted a gif of Idris Elba giving the thumbs up with the word “neat,” as if Idris was in his heman woman hater’s club (he’s not!) and Lucy told him bye:

Then the douchebag argued with more people in the comments, telling them to starve themselves, to get a hobby, and that they were disappointments to their parents. He also made racist insults against other Twitter users because of course he did.

I really like how Lucy responded, she sounds like a badass mom, like “you should be ashamed, young man.” That’s the way to shut it down.

Anorexia is a serious mental disorder, it’s not a disease of vanity and it’s not something to throw around lightly. I don’t know why I’m giving this troll so much credit though, he’s just mad at every woman who refuses to sleep with him. (Basically every woman.)

So many men seem to think that everything women do is about them and for them, in fact our whole existence is for them.
Usually when I write something like this, I can just sit back and wait for the inevitable “Not all men…” response. But we’re probably above that here, right? 😉

    • M. says:

I can honestly say my husband isn’t like that at all…his mother raised him right…but almost every other man I’ve known or been involved with was pretty much how you described.

    • Kittem says:

The #notallmen brigade usually can’t resist.

Men generally think that women exist for their gaze. That is truth.

    • INeedANap says:

I always find it amusing when (certain) men think we cease to exist when they’re not looking right at us, and assume we have no lives outside of them. But then, babies lack object permanence.

Ms. Hale’s reply was far classier than he deserved.

  2. littlemissnaughty says:

That’s f*cked up. And since when do men think they we need them to sign off on our bodies??? Go sleep in the middle of a busy intersection.

  3. Beth says:

I hate when people tell me to “go eat a hamburger. ” If they think I look like I need a burger, I’ll eat every burger they want to give me. I absolutely love cheeseburgers with mushrooms, ketchup and mustard. Light up that grill!

    • Crowdhood says:

Heard! Somebody tells me to eat a burger I hope they are holding one in their hands for me. I love a good burger and I hate a small troll.

    • INeedANap says:

Related, when a man tells me to smile I always reply “then tell me a joke.” None of them has ever told me a joke. Sad!

  4. mamacita says:

well having dated a misogynist man I can tell you that they say those things to make themselves feel powerful and you feel small. i was called a wh*re, sl*t and a c*nt for no reason. overall misogynist behavior has become worse and more rampant since being enabled by trump the oompa loompa who shares the same views.

  5. Zondie says:

The internet has proved the perfect vehicle for drawing out unhappy and angry people. I hope Lucy continues to thrive.

  6. Snowflake says:

I get so sick of men commenting on a female’s body. Why do they think that is ok if that we want their opinion?

    • INeedANap says:

As an aside, and I don’t want to tell you how to write — but the using “female” in place of “women” yet still calling men “men” and not “males” makes them seem more human than us. I know it’s part of the popular lingo but it’s one of the many insidious ways our culture seeks to dehumanize and minimize us.

      • Snowflake says:

Idk why I used female instead of woman..

      • Beth says:

Come on! Seriously? That’s a way that culture seeks to dehumanize and minimize us? Call me a woman, girl, female, or lady, just don’t call me a chick. I doubt many,if any, are insulted, feel less human, or even think twice if “female ” is said instead of “woman.” There’s things that really are important to concentrate on.

        @snowflake -you did nothing wrong

Not that IIII have a right to comment either, but I think she looks incredible, and her response was spot on. The dude really was a troll, just wanting to get a response. Typically they get ignored, but she responded without really even engaging him. She just deflated any smirk he had on his face. Love it!

  8. Jo says:

Just to be clear, are we just saying that he shouldn’t have tweeted it because men (or anyone) shouldn’t be commenting on women’s bodies or are people annoyed because she did suffer from anorexia and is apparently over it?

    • littlemissnaughty says:

      Both.

    • mamacita says:

it’s his judgey judgment that is upsetting despite whether or not she had anorexia. however he like trump is finding a sensitive spot of hers and using it to purposely undermine her esteem. that’s the epitome of pathological.

    • detritus says:

and third, he positioned it as ‘you should do this so men think you’re hot’. Fourth he followed with racist nonsense.

Dude basically got the I’m an Asshole Edgelord Bingo going on.

    • Kittem says:

      All of this^^^^^^

      • rapomi says:

I’m so happy to read these comments. I absolutely HATE that men feel as though women’s bodies are public property. I have had a few occasions in my life where men have made comments on my body and it just infuriates me that they seem to think that’s perfectly ok. News flash: women are not merely decorative and the fact that they think their opinion on MY body is welcome is just SO messed up! Sorry for the rant.
Edit to add – and why is it that men feel as though we women can be judged by our looks but they never apply those same exacting standards to themselves. Example – the hideous Donald Trump giving women scores out of ten! Gahhhh!!!

  9. Roundbelly says:

He’s a dick. Men shouldn’t have a say in what women look like. But I have had several dear darling friends who wanted to act and starved themselves or had bulimia and for the most part got tonnes of attention from guys and they were obviously not well but got tonnes of reward from it personally. They were obsessed with their beauty. As opposed to my super academic friends who were seriously anorexic and ended up in hospital and now run policies on refugees and the like. I get it’s a mental illness about control and I have seen it up close a lot. And there a difference.

  10. Roundbelly says:

Having trouble tonight. Sorry if repeat posts

  11. kimbers says:

so tired of men thinking their comments are needed, justified, or witty. it’s misogynistic for them to think any women GaF about what they think when it comes to our bodies.

  12. Lucy says:

She needs to learn to ignore the twitter trolls. Twitter has become a warm, cozy home for the bored and insane. If I were famous I wouldn’t even read them. Now the crazy weirdos know that she reads the @s and that they can get to her.

    • Elisa the I. says:

Yeah, I’m surprised that so many celebs handle their own IG, FB, Twitter etc. accounts. If I were famous, I would outsource that to some pros and not bother with it too much.

  13. Jess says:

    What a loser

  14. Umila says:

I think his behavior is disgusting, but I also haven’t forgotten that she recently called an old photo of herself ‘fat’. She was noticeably thinner the last season of PLL. I think it’s pretty disgusting that she called a healthy photo of herself ‘fat’ when she is a role model to young women.

  15. angie0717 says:

But she looks extremely thin and malnourished. I don’t think she’s ever looked this way. It’s alarming. And I certainly wouldn’t want to c her on any magazine covers promoting that body frame. I think it’s ok to point out the obvious and not b an asshole about it.

    • magnoliarose says:

She isn’t extremely skinny. She is thin.
I have said it before telling a thin person they are starving, or abnormal is body shaming. I have been confronted and accused of being anorexic, and I am not, and it gets old. Her anorexia in the past is not a reason to accuse her now.
