Kristen Stewart is ‘being eyed’ for a role in the big ‘Charlie’s Angels’ reboot

70th annual Cannes Film Festival - '120 Beats per Minute' - Premiere

Today in “Really, That’s a Thing?” news, Kristen Stewart is “being eyed” for a role in the reboot of Charlie’s Angels. One, I totally forgot that they were rebooting Charlie’s Angels. Why are they doing that? Two, Kristen Stewart is being eyed for it?? Really? Call me old-fashioned, but the Angels are supposed to be femme-fatale ninjas with bouncy hair and toothy smiles. That’s their whole deal. They’re not supposed to be grim hipsters whose major skill in life is eye-rolling and lip-biting!

Kristen Stewart is being eyed for the “Charlie’s Angels” reboot, according to sources close to the project. The “Twilight” star would play one of the members of the female private detective agency. Stewart’s is not the only name being considered. Casting is under way, and Sony, the studio behind the film, is also interested in several other big names, including Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o.

Elizabeth Banks, who scored with “Pitch Perfect 2,” is directing the film. It’s slated for a summer 2019 release, and Sony clearly has franchise hopes for the project. Banks, Elizabeth Cantillon and Max Handelman will produce.

I like Elizabeth Banks and I think she’ll do interesting work as director on this reboot. That being said, this probably doesn’t need to be rebooted. And it definitely doesn’t need to be rebooted with K-Stew. I like Kristen because I accept her as she is: a quirky bisexual hipster who makes short films about water. She’s awesome in her own way, but her way doesn’t intersect with the kind of actresses needed for Charlie’s Angels. While I like the idea of Lupita Nyong’o doing this kind of thing – I mean, come on, she can do anything – I also kind of hope Lupita eventually says no.

…Also: I’m old enough to remember that it was a really big deal that Lucy Liu was one of the angels. They made one of the angels an Asian character and some people freaked out about it. Imagine the freak-out if one of the angels is black! Now imagine if all of them were women of color. That’s how they should do it, now that I’m thinking about it. Like, cast all-WOC angels. Why not?

    Hard pass.

  2. Jillian says:

Boo. Bring back Drew, Lucy and Cameron for new movie.

    • Pina says:

      Agree – cast was perfect
I’d love a new one with cameron and co.
No need to cast with younger stars

I never saw the tv show but the movie with Cameron was terrible, why did the angels act so dumb? If they are going to reboot it make the angels smart and altheltic and maybe make Charlie and Bosley women too

  4. Lightpurple says:

I see zero need for this but with Banks involved, could it be possible they’re doing it as a spoof?

They did that the last time with Drew & Co. As someone who grew up watching Angels on TV in the first run, I wasn’t impressed with the movies. They just made them dumb look dumb as rocks in a wink wink way.

I don’t have high hopes for this reboot. Especially if grumpy cat KStew is involved. I can’t see her muster any enthusiasm. Who next? Macarooney Mara? Boy wouldn’t the gloom and doom sisters make this a “fun” film.

    No. Hated them all.

  6. Megan says:

When women say they want more films about women, they mean films like Hidden Figgures, not Charlie’s Angels.

Will Charlie be short for Charlotte?

I love Lupita and I’m one of the few on here who likes KStew. However, the film doesn’t need to be rebooted and with Banks at the helm it is probably going to be goofy—a word I don’t associate with either actress. Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Issa Rae, Rebel Wilson, Emma Stone fit Banks vibe more.

Apparently this idea of a reboot film been around for a while though and the wording “interested” doesn’t mean the actresses are actually interested in doing another reboot. Film person I follow on twitter commented on the wording and that it’s v. possible the studio is just tossing around the names of some A/B listers to make it seem like a hot project (like they did with The Crow) before casting some unknown or some 21 year old CW actresses.

They should cast KStew as Charlie!
