Celine Dion dedicates her show in Vegas to shooting victims, donates all proceeds

I was in Charlottesville, VA visiting a friend about a week after Heather Heyer was murdered in what was clearly a terrorist attack but will never officially be called that. Given all the awful and tragic things that have happened since, it seems like so long ago but it’s been less than two months. It was heartbreaking to be there, to see the tributes and Love signs and the beautifully simple messages that were up in all the shop windows. I couldn’t even bring myself to go to the memorial that was there for her, but the community came together at a difficult time. I mention this as preface to this story about Celine Dion performing in Vegas Tuesday night and dedicating her show and all the proceeds to the victims of the Vegas attack. There are dozens and dozens of victims, and hearing their stories and seeing their faces just brings it home how it could be any of us or any one of our loved ones and friends. Just thinking about it makes me cry and I can’t imagine what it must be like to be there in Vegas where all those people were killed in cold blood.

People still want to come together to listen to music and see performances, especially after such tragedy when we need each other. That’s why Celine Dion’s gesture on Tuesday night was so meaningful. She still performed, she didn’t cancel her show (which would have been understandable) and instead gave a heartfelt message to everyone along with donating the revenue from that night.

Céline Dion is paying her respects to the victims and families of Sunday’s Las Vegas shooting, which left 59 people dead and 527 concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival injured.

“The Power of Love” singer returned to the stage of her Vegas residency at The Colosseum inside Caesars Palace on Tuesday evening with a touching tribute.

“I hope that you’re doing okay … Before we start the show, I need to talk to you for a moment,” a tearful Dion told the crowd. “I never start the show like this but tonight is very different. On Sunday we lost too many beautiful, innocent souls, and so many are still suffering,. But tonight we’re going to let these families know that we are supporting them and that we will help them through their tragic loss.”

Dion, 49 continued, “We dedicate tonight’s show to all of the victims and their families, and to the first responders, and to the doctors and nurses who are working around the clock to save lives, and to so many heroes who did whatever they could to help complete strangers in a time of desperate need.”

Dion, who stood on stage with #VegasStrong signs on the big screen, also announced she and the show partners AEG Presents and Caesars Entertainment would be donating all proceeds from the concert to the victims of Sunday’s shooting.

I would say Celine is a national treasure, but you get to claim her Canadians. She’s your national treasure. (You also gave us Justin Bieber, but Celine’s goodness outweighs his general sh-ttiness.) I love her and would expect nothing less from her. She feels things deeply, she’s a true artist and she’s an amusing fashionista. I’m trying to distract myself from thinking about this. It’s too much to process. One person should not be losing their lives to a madman with a gun or a car or an explosive device and the people who commit those acts should not be named and discussed as we try to figure out why they did it. They should be called “shooter/terrorist/awful excuse for human #4105” and their life should be scrutinized by the police, not the press. These f-kers get too much press for these horrible acts. Keep them anonymous and pass laws to limit access to guns, restrict access to more deadly guns as well as limit the number of guns that one person can have. No one needs arsenals like this.

Now let’s revisit some of Celine’s outfits in Paris this summer.

    Celine is a true goddess.

I will be in Las Vegas this weekend and will be at Celine’s show. I was already not really looking forward to going to Vegas, but have been downright dreading it the last few days. The trip was planned several months ago for a family member’s birthday, and it now just feels so wrong to ‘celebrate’ after such tragedy. I’m also NOT a fan of Celine’s music, but she has always seemed to be genuinely kind, so I really appreciate her response.

Most of Celine’s outfits horrify me, but dang, that grey skirt-suit is EPIC in all the right ways.

As is Celine herself. What a wonderful lady.

    • Chanteloup says:

Amen. This story is just further evidence of her huge and giving heart she has shown in the past.
But I have to say these outfit photos are also giving me life today!!! Thank you, Celine! I would totally wear those cream silk pj thingies with the red heels, that silver mini dress with boots, the cream mini dress with boots, and the black and white flowy dress with black heels — But she has the attitude to rock ALL of them!

  4. Sansa says:

What a moral good person. Thank you Celine.

  5. Venus says:

I adore that grey suit, she looks fabulous. And you are absolutely right on not naming the perpetrators of these acts — such coverage glorifies them by extension and makes committing random violent acts seem a legitimate way to get attention/become (in)famous, since it actually works.

Due to unforeseen circumstances at home we couldn’t go, but we were supposed to see Celine a few months ago and were booked at the Mandalay Bay. Ugh. This whole thing is just so, so awful. There are no adequate words anymore to express my sadness and general bewilderment about the lax gun laws and the obsessive gun culture we live with in the US.

For people who are not Celine fans, fear not, although I am a big fan, I have heard from many that they show is just fabulous. She is a true shining star!

  7. Kloops says:

Her music has been hit or miss for me even though her talent is undeniable. However, I’ve always had a soft spot for her personality. She’s so delightfully earnest and kooky. It’s a quality that’s aging really well. She’s a unicorn.

I live in Vegas. This is a city still in shock. For a city that is all about having a good time, these horrors were unimaginable. But this city stepped up. They’re asking people to stop donating blood because they have enough (when does that EVER happen?). They’re raising so much money for the victims relief. The police officers and first responders are being honored, as they should. We were even able to graciously host #45 yesterday, even though he is not liked here. I am so proud of my city. #VegasStrong, indeed.

      S. CA here and following this news…I said to my husband that it was so fortunate that Vegas has top notch medical facilities and doctors and the first responders were absolutely amazing. The timeline shows they breached the shooters room in like no time. Saved many lives I’m sure. You have every right to feel pride!

      • BrandyAlexander says:

The funny thing is, I don’t even think we have top notch medical facilities. (I’m from Cleveland, and used to having one of the best in the world in the Cleveland Clinic) But we do have dedicated doctors and nurses (and whoever else I am missing) who work tirelessly to make up for whatever we lack in facilities. I’d put these folks up against anyone in the world.

And your right about how fast they got to him. I read it was within 10 minutes. I am friends with a few of the Metro police officers, and they never cease to amaze me how dedicated they are to the city. They do so much community outreach, and charity programs. And my Facebook feed has been filled with restaurants offering all first responders (including hospital staff) free meals this week. As horrendous as this act is, the response this city has shown restored my faith in the people to be good and decent. Whenever I get homesick for Cleveland, I am going to remember this and what a great city this really is.

    Love her. Always have.

  10. Scarlett says:

Good on you Celine, even though in those overalls you look ready to go fly fishing.

  11. Betsy says:

    Classy classy, Celine.

Also, I LOVE that if Celine has had surgery or fillers, they’re invisible. It’s just such a gorgeous thing to see someone looking beautiful and completely real.
