Ariana Grande dyed her hair grey, is this going to be a new thing for fall?

I try to pay attention and sort-of follow trends in fashion and makeup as I don’t mind switching up my look depending on what’s popular. (Plus it’s fun to make changes as long as they’re temporary.) One thing you can’t get me to do though is cut my hair dramatically. I’m pretty steadfast in my hair look and am scared of either damaging it or worse, like having to spend weeks to months growing out a too-short haircut. In terms of a hair change that’s semi-permanent, dyeing isn’t that traumatizing. You can always get it fixed at some point if turns out badly or if you change your mind. (I went red earlier this year, which isn’t a big deal, but it was to me, and I couldn’t get used to it so I went back to blonde.)

That’s all preface to this superficial story I want to cover instead of considering the existential crisis I’m having as an American who isn’t a racist POS only out for myself and people exactly like me. Ariana Grande dyed her hair grey (she didn’t call it silver) and posted this pic to Instagram. You can see she still has that crazy long straight hair with tons of extensions in it and that she looks bizarrely orange. I’m hoping the orange tone is just an effect of the filter she’s using for this photo because she normally doesn’t look like that.

It also looks like her hair has a light lavender tinge to it, but it’s not the lavender color that was trendy last year. Apparently grey hair, particularly grey ombre hair, is really big this season and after Ariana premiered hers you can bet it will catch on more. Speaking of that, pink-tinged hair is in now too and has been for a while. Busy Phillips and her BFF Michelle Williams dyed their hair pink at home and documented the process on Snapchat. I saw that on Elle’s site, and they have a video on that story of an Elle staffer (I’m assuming she is) going from blonde shoulder length hair to a silver (their color descriptor) blunt cut. It’s a stylish cut and apparently color but it ages the woman quite a bit. I had a hard time getting before and after pics from that fast video, but here are a couple.

It could be the makeup and cut too, but I prefer the before picture as the model looks much younger. Add some makeup and a blowout to her before look and she’s good to go. In contrast the pink hair on Busy looks kind of cute (that pic is below) but she didn’t change her haircut and neither did Ariana. I think this is striking on Ariana in that she has that very young look and can get experimental with it. If she doesn’t like this color she can always dye it brown again, that’s her trademark color.

People reminds us that Ariana had ombre hair last year and that she had red hair for her role on Sam & Cat from 2013-2014.

Check out this pic of Ariana with her boyfriend, Mac Miller, and friends. This could have been taken in the 90s!

No – that was the trend like four years ago?

    • Steph says:

Yep, it was a big thing between 2012-13

    • Snazzy says:

      that’s what I thought too!

    • whatWHAT? says:

did she dye her extensions too?…

and why is her head always positioned like her ponytail is too heavy to hold up? lord this girl is annoying.

go lick some donuts or something.

      • Kitten says:

She only allows the left side of her face to be photographed or some ridic shit like that.

The grey looks good on her but I wish she’d lose the extensions already. So dated.

  2. slowsnow says:

I love grey and white hair. But it’ll come to me anyway so why do it now?

    • third ginger says:

You are so right. And I wish for you my late mother’s silver gorgeousness. I got the iron grey and yellow, once having been a natural blonde. At nearly 65, I die it platinum.

      • slowsnow says:

Yes, as I was writing I was thinking that I may have to dye it at some point. My father is 76 and still has black hair with a few greys here and there, which is probably what will happen to me.
My mother has beautiful grey/white hair but was very fair and dyes it pale blonde. Platinum is awesome and sounds fun. I am sure you pull it off beautifully having been blonde. It’s an impossible shade for olive skin.

My mom frosted her hair gray in the 80’s. It was so confusing to me because I always thought people didn’t want to be gray. She had great color. Now she dyes it like a reddish blonde, and it’s not nearly as striking. Still, she was in her 40’s in the 80’s, and it at least was somewhat age appropriate. But I guess it’s just a color and obviously fake, like pink hair is obviously fake. I don’t think I care for it on these young women. Let the women who actually have gray to cover up go for the silver fox look!

  4. Laura says:

I thought this trend was over – I tried to get my hair that color this summer and thought that everyone would think I was behind the times. Turns out it looked horrible with my skin tone (I have a pale/pink complexion), but I still really like the color on others. Looks great on Ariana!

  5. Cherry says:

I thought that was Kylie Jenner in the second pic. Do all instagirls look alike or am I becoming an old fart?

    • slowsnow says:

I’ll join you in the old fart room although I have no idea how old you are – but age is a state of mind right? In this case, hurray for old farts.

    • whatWHAT? says:

they all get the same plastic surgery so…yeah, they do all look alike. or at least very similar.

  6. JenB says:

I remember Kelly Osbourne doing the gray hair look a few years back. It does kind of work on some people.
As for Fall–don’t know if it’s ever going to arrive! Went out early this morning and it was 76 degrees and muggy as can be. October is feeling like August, yuck. I blame the Trump administration.

  7. Brittney B. says:

    A new thing?

    Maybe for LAST fall…

    • NewDazeNewz says:

The woman above went from 20 to 50 w blunt silver hair. ARe you kidding? This isn’t edgy at all. How far does corporate fashion have to go to give us “something different”. What’s next, glue on melanoma?

  8. Shambles says:

Grateful for this post just for the confirmation that she and Mac Miller are still together. It’s the little things, you know, when the world is going to shit.

  9. Allie B says:

It could be a wig. I’m with the others, as I remember this being big a couple years ago. Kelly Osbourne did it for a while.

  10. HelloSunshine says:

I thought this was the trend a few years ago? I keep my hair different colors (mostly varying shades of purple) and my hair stylist said she hates when people want to go silver or gray because it can be hard to get it right. She also hates pastels because they fade crazy fast and people always end up disappointed with how much upkeep there is.

    • Vovicia says:

I hear that – I love going red red – but it just never lasts on my hair very long at all.

  11. Olive says:

The grey hair trend is a year old, at least… so maybe it’s now jumped the shark now that Ariana’s done it?

  12. Zondie says:

The gray trend must have come back. Yesterday the cashier at the store was sporting this exact look.

  13. Ang says:

Most people are going to have natural grey hair for half their life (depending on how long they live). Why would you do it while you’re young? I think it looks terrible on all young people. I guess I’m getting old too

  14. blonde555 says:

Ugh. The gray/silver thing is so 2012/2013. Very few people can pull it off and unless you’re toning it weekly, the yellow undertones/brass come out fast.

Side note: without a heavy filter or ridiculous face mask like she has in the pic, no one looks better or younger when they color it gray. It’s VERY aging.

  15. Who ARE These People? says:

Grey/white hair was a real trend in the 1700s. Everything comes back! ; )

    • crazydaisy says:

LOL – powdered wigs: THE WORST LOOK EVER! One reason I can’t stand that time period.

  16. Nic says:

I’m confused why everyone thinks thins is an old trend, fashion colors are still very much in. Especially mauve pinks and smokey grays

  17. awholenewworld says:

I really think that’s a wig but It looks good. My hair is a pastel pink right now and I’m loving it! I love seeing all of these fun colors.

  18. aenflex says:

Personal choice, of course, but I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to find an employer or clients with rainbow hair, purple hair, green, lavender, blue, etc.

  19. DesertReal says:

Although I love my naturally gold/silver grey streaks, I’ve yet to see a dyed grey look that really works on someone.
It seems like only reeeally irritating people are drawn to this monstrosity (i.e. Grande, Osborne, etc.)
Just because it’s trendy doesn’t mean it works.
