'Faces Places' Premiere

There’s sack dressing, and then there’s whatever the hell this is. These are photos of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence at the premiere of Faces Places in LA. Angelina and Jennifer didn’t have anything to do with the film getting made (at least, not as far as I can tell), but they must enjoy feel-good documentaries, so they came out for the premiere. Angelina’s fashion choice reflects that, I guess – she’s dressed like someone prepared to watch a DVD at home. She even brought her special couch-throw-blanket. My God, I know this is not the most important thing, but I’d love it if New, Single Angelina hired a new stylist. I want her to shake things up sartorially so badly. There’s no reason for this!!

As for the film, it’s a documentary and it won the top documentary prize at the Cannes Film Festival this year. Here’s Vulture’s summary:

When was the last time you saw a movie that made you want to hug a stranger, or strike up a conversation on the subway? For her latest, and perhaps last, documentary, Faces Places (a.k.a. Visages Villages), legendary 89-year-old French New Wave director Agnès Varda teamed up with 34-year-old street artist JR to drive around to villages in France with JR’s signature Photobooth truck. People step inside, it prints out giant black-and-white portraits from its side, and then JR and his team paste the portraits on the sides of buildings. (JR has also done numerous projects in New York City; his Instagrams of his friendship with Varda are the cutest.)

On their adventure, they meet the sole woman living in a row of abandoned mining houses and paste her face to the front of her home. She’s so overwhelmed she bursts into tears. They also take photos of the wives of dock workers and paste them, side by side, on a massive stack of shipping crates, then ask the wives to sit inside the hearts of their blown-up images, flapping their wings like birds….

[From Vulture]

It sounds very sweet. I would like to see this! I wouldn’t even mind the subtitles.

Oh, and Jennifer Lawrence wore a dress from L. Wells Bridal. Is this literally a wedding dress??

  1. Oh-Dear says:

I don’t blame her, really. Every time she’s photographed, people comment on her weight and her breasts.

    • Handwoven says:

Exactly. Why is it so hard to believe that a woman who gets body shamed every time she leaves the house would cover up?
Plus she has a lot going on and it seems like “bowing down to people demanding she dress like a sex kitten” is far down her list.

      • whatWHAT? says:

and though she is STILL gorgeous, is she really even “sex kitten” anymore?

I don’t think anyone thinks of her that way…more like a humanitarian/actress/director who just happens to be strikingly beautiful.

her hair has been looking great lately. I really like the darker brunette over the sort of reddish/light brown she had previously.

      • KBB says:

I don’t think anyone expects her to be a sex kitten. I did like when she wore pink to the FTKMF event in Cambodia though.

      • Casey_ says:

        @whatwhat

Sometimes because Angelina comes with built-in haters being that beautiful, and because of her inauspicious beginnings with equally beautiful Brad and the hate she still engenders to this day from fans of his first ex, I’ve learned to pick up on shade in posts.

Not saying that’s what you’re doing- but I will say this…

Angelina just turned 42 this summer.

Most women celebrities in HW, that are older than Angelina – from Sofia Vergara, to Aniston, to Charlize Theron, to Jennifer Lopez, to constant trou dropping Chelsea Handler, to Paltrow, to many many others
love to wear very revealing and/or sexy clothes especially when they step out for events. Call it sexy or sex kitten-ish or whatever.

No one thinks twice when they do it, and no one writes post about how they STILL can. It’s a given.

Angelina does same for events, but for every day stuff or even events where she isn’t supposed to be the main attraction she doesn’t.

She’s never dressed to be sexy in her day to day.

Maybe people that naturally are sexy or sensual don’t need to or want to.

      • whatWHAT? says:

        you’re not saying, you’re “jus’ sayin’…”, huh?

whatever, Casey/almondmilk//Carol/Beso/Caro or whatever you’re calling yourself these days.

all I was saying is that SHE doesn’t perpetuate the “sex kitten” image…or “wild child” image, or whatever you want to call it. I think people see her as MORE than that now. and I know SHE sees herself as more than that. those other women don’t have the same gravitas that Jolie has, and use their looks or “sexy” to get attention. Jolie doesn’t need to. if she WANTS to look sexy, we know she can, as she has looked incredible on red carpets in recent years.

you say that you’ve learned to “pick up shade” on posts…well, perhaps you should have your shadar recalibrated because you picked up on “shade” in my post that wasn’t there.

        bye.

      • HadleyB says:

She still looks sexier than Jennifer with the boob buffet out… even in the couch blanket. I wish I looked like that wearing my couch blanket.

    • Casey. says:

Anyone who thinks Angelina wears what she wears or does what she does because, insecurity- probably just dropped in from Mars or hasn’t read much about her.

It’s what she likes. Don’t know why some people can’t get it.

Her outfit still looks better than Jlaw’s, who bizarrely seems to be channeling the virgin bride in a Harlequin after dark romance.

      • vesper nite says:

LOL! For realz! JLaw looks like a Flowers in Attic character! LOL! Probably the only roles she’ll get now that Harvey is locked out of Hwood.

      • Infjay says:

        Exactly.

Plus, she is an exceptionally well-travelled woman, exposed to a wide range of diverse sartorial style (both in form, fabric and fit).
That her wardrobe includes what appears to be a ruana isn’t surprising, although it’s not what we’d expect to see at a movie premiere.

(She’s also a single mom of six kids. Respect.)

    • V4Real says:

How would she know she’s being body shamed. Don’t most commenters claim that AJ doesnt read gossip about her or she couldn’t care less what people think about her

      • Casey_ says:

        @v4
That was my point, she doesn’t and doesn’t.

Obviously the people saying she would be body shamed, aren’t exactly fans who follow her.

They may not be fans at all, and just like implying, like you are here, that she’s insecure and reads bloids.

        Icu

      • Handwoven says:

You don’t think she’s ever in a public place to see headlines on tabs saying ANGIE DEATHLY SKINNY, ANGIE WASTING AWAY AFTER DIVORCE, etc?
You don’t think her teenage children read these things?

      • Casey _ says:

I didn’t say she was blind and has never been in a grocery store with tabs, I said she tries to not spend time on what doesn’t matter. Whether she’s successful 98% of the time or 78% of the time- judging by her accomplishments, how she presents herself – sexy in mags, at premieres and covered up at movie premieres that aren’t hers and grocery stores- it says to me she’s not overly body conscious.

If you’d like to believe she’s ashamed and ready for a burkha, feel free. But I’m still baffled at why some women want to dis-empower powerful women.

Plus, the pics insude showed she’s wearing a tank or tank romper, no bra, with sheer black lace panels that go all the way up her leg. It’s quite hot.

  2. Kitten says:

    Welp……
At least she’s warm and cozy?

j Law’s face looks strange here..she’s becoming a Gaga in that I’m not really certain I know what she looks like anymore.

    • detritus says:

I think this is the exact blanket I need for my couch.

What is Jlaw doing exactly? Is it weird makeup or tweaking?

    • Annabelle Bronstein says:

This is like a high class, cashmere snuggie or slanket or whatever the hell they are.

    • Lizard says:

IMO Jlaw looks stunning, I hate her dress, though.
I like the color of AJ’s blanket. That’s all I’ve got.

    • Faye says:

Do we think Angie has hair extensions? I would love to have her hair.

As far as jLaw’s face, she’s been subtly tweaking it for years. Brow lift was first, then she’s has some work to her nose, just a little over the last few years so everytime you see her, she looks a little different but you can’t really tell what. I’m adamant she had her lips done last year. Who ever is doing her work is doing a great job. It’s slow enough that in 10 years she’ll have a new face and we won’t even notice.

    • Tiny Martian says:

Meh. Maybe it was chilly and she didn’t feel like taking it off and freezing just to make the photographers and those of us who consume the photographs happy? Most actresses strip down to their evening gowns for picture taking even though they might be shivering and turning blue in the process.

      I say, “good for her!”

  3. AVVSAJNC says:

JLaw’s dress is gorgeous. I assume AJ forgot the ashes to go along with her sackcloth?

  4. Brittney B. says:

    …aaaaaand she still looks gorgeous.

Why bother with anything fashionable or form-fitting when THAT FACE is gonna steal the show anyway?

    • CynicalAnn says:

That’s what I think-her face is so gorgeous. Nothing can compete with that. And her face is glowing-she looks really happy here.

      • Janetdr says:

Yes, that’s what I signed on to say -she looks happy and content and if that means she wears a slanket to every event -I’m cool with it! I used to have a similar item, no fringe and more taupe with some lacy business around the opening. I used to wear it over a black bodysuit and felt so glamorous… moths got to it unfortunately.

    • Peeking in says:

      Agreed!
Also, she’s wearing a black dress or romper underneath. This is just a cover-up, which she likely removed once inside.

    • Casey. says:

      Lol high five @brittney

In a way, it really is like BAM! FACE. She’s giving only face, and people need to be grateful.

Also, her posture is incredible. You can only wear that stuff when your carriage is like a ballerina’s. If you hunch around or trip or slouch, long and flowy cover ups are not for you.

    • BorderMollie says:

My thoughts exactly, like wow she looks so beautiful here! Love the subtle make-up look, too.

  5. Christo says:

Whatever it is…it looks very comfortable.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

My first thought was “fancy nap time” and I love it. Comfort all day everyday.

    • Wurstfingers says:

I used to ‘wear’ my blanket around the house when I was a child. It’s super comfortable. So I appreciate Angelina’s effort to make blankets acceptable/professional wear in public. Go cuddly blanket fashion!

      • Nibbi says:

Legit. I want to wear this too; may I look even a tiny percentage point as elegant and magisterial doing so as AJ does 🙂

    • Carmen says:

Jolie wore a blanket and JLaw wore a nightgown. They’re both ready for bed.

    • BorderMollie says:

Indeed, rock those comfortable duds proudly, ladies.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

      It’s a super-pashmina!!!!! lol

  6. Jess RED says:

    And she still looks AMAZING!

  7. aang says:

Looks comfy. They both look great imo.

  8. MC2 says:

After the weeks news, I am surprised we are not all wandering around in mumus.

    • crazydaisy says:

Haha – and that’s why burqas were invented. But really, we need to actively teach girls how to say, and do, NO. I wish someone had taught me. I didn’t know how to say NO, and had some bad experiences. Not that it was my fault, but I didn’t know how to take care of myself. This is female empowerment, and it’s up to women, b/c Harvey’s ilk.

Anyway, AJ is awesome, she looks comfy, unusual choice but hey.

      • Shambles says:

Hugging you, CrazyDaisy. I, too, was never taught how to say no. The effects are lifelong.

      • MC2 says:

Yea, my comment was in no way support for Donna Karan’s mindset. Burn her clothes & we should all be able to run around naked. But I do feel like wearing a blanket, crying & napping all week to feel good movies. I’m with AJ on this one.

I don’t think any woman who was abused by Harvey Weinstein didn’t know how to say “No” properly or “do no” properly. There is no easy time to say “NO” and wiggle out of an encounter with a man like that & keep all your stuff (reputation, job, friendship with said man, etc). That is a farce that was fed to us. Smart, virtuous women will find a way out but not the others…..nope. I am done with that narrative. We don’t need to learn how to say “No” better, people need to learn to hear No & stop.

You didn’t have bad some experiences cuz you didn’t know how to take care of yourself- you had some bad experiences cuz others didn’t know how to care for you. I hear you, though, that we do need to live on the defensive cuz men like this are out there & people are complicit.

      • Ang says:

Same here, crazydaisy. Some bad experiences that have left me ashamed and physically damaged. I was also the “cool girl” and it’s taken me this long to realize how damaging that was to myself as well as other women. It’s no wonder I only had male friends. And they all used me in some form or another that I’m just realizing now. It’s never too late to change for the better and I’m doing that now, and I’ll never turn a blind eye to be “cool” ever again.

      • Who ARE These People? says:

I wish that the boys were actively taught not to put you in the position where you had to say Yes or No. Even women who do know how to say “No” can find themselves so startled that training does not kick in, or there is a power imbalance, or they are drugged, or they are physically overwhelmed. It’s not all “just say no” out there in the world of sexual assault.

  9. passerby says:

    haha I love it!

  10. Adele Dazeem says:

La Jolie looks better. Healthier? Happier? Is it the added weight? The relief of divorce? I am not a filler/Botox/plastic surgery interpreter but all I can say is she looks great, better than she has in a few years. Blanket or not I’m a fan!

    • whatWHAT? says:

I honestly think (and I might get slammed for this) that she is relieved to be “rid of” Pitt.

I think their marriage was strained for a while, and it showed on her physically (him, too, at times). I think she wanted so badly to keep the family together that she put up with bad behavior thinking it would change. but once she made the decision to cut the cord, so to speak, the relief was evident and she thrived.

    • Nibbi says:

She does. She’s always, always stunning, but she seems more content, or calm, or something lately. Not as strained, better-rested.

    • shlockOftheNEw says:

I wouldn’t mind the blanket dress if she didn’t style it with literal bed head.

  11. Mari says:

She looks good. Nice and comfortable. I like the soft muted colour on her. I’m freezing in a cold, rainy and windy autumn weather, so I’m biased to all the nice, cozy and warm clothes at the moment.

  12. Mel says:

I think it’s elegant. It’s a liiiittle too long, and I am not crazy about the colour, but I think she looks elegant.

    • SJ says:

I like this look and agree if it was about 1′ shorter it would look better. I’m so tired of all the trashy/fleshy/Skin on display with celebs. Go AJ!

  13. MousyB says:

    Love it.

  14. Penelope says:

    She looks ridiculous.

  15. Shambles says:

Blanket or no blanket, I still would. Girl crush 5 ever.

  16. gennline says:

This is the picture you should have shown.
    Angie’s shawl is for sharing.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BaJSCP9nKDJ/

  17. Reece says:

Yep that’s a blanket! lol It’s looks comfortable and strangely good tho.

  18. lucy2 says:

    Not a great premiere outfit.
Jennifer’s dress is kind of pretty, but a little bridal.

  19. Beth says:

She should wear fuzzy slippers to match it, not heels

  20. LadyT says:

She looks beautiful as always. I know I feel incredibly elegant in a flowing wrap. Unfortunately the way it looks doesn’t necessarily connect to how it feels. I dressed similarly at home once, feeling so divine—son walks in “You sick?” Husband walks in “You sick?” Oh well.

  21. Joannie says:

Angie looks very tired. Her eyes have deep craters for lack of a better word. I’ve noticed that same tired look in past pictures of her. I wonder if its hormonal. I get them when the weather changes.
    Jennifer is so pretty!

    • Casey_ says:

      Riiiiiight. Ok lady. Lol

    • Ennie says:

Menopause struck after her surgery. Good skin care or minimal tweakings can only get you so far without looking crazy. She seems to go for a mostly natural look.
I am 47 and need tweaks, but I work with teens who’d call me out as soon as I injected something in my face. No, thanks.

  22. koko says:

I actually like both outfits. AJ is perfect for this time of year and JL’s is definitely something I would wear in the Summer.

  23. Serene Wolf says:

Both Angelina and Jennifer look beautiful.

  24. Icantremembermyusername says:

I’m in immediate menopause from chemo and hormone related treatments secondary to breast cancer. I have been utterly SHOCKED at what the hormones do to you physically. Overnight I have horribly dry skin, aching bones, exhaustion and my vagina practically creaks when I walk. She goes pretty hard for what she’s been through! I don’t know if menopause is easier when one is gradually undergoing it, but I can tell you, this way SUCKS.

    • graymatters says:

I did the gradual, all-natural menopause thing and it also sucks. The difference, I think, is that I slowly grew accustomed to the symptoms and didn’t notice the emotional side effects until I was actually suicidal. I’m coming out of the worst of it now.

In all fairness, I think that menopause should return us to our 10 year old selves, with the addition of wisdom and wrinkles.

    • Jayna says:

She went into immediate menopause from the surgery, but she immediately went on hormone replacement therapy I remember her saying. So she would never have suffered the effects of menopause head on.

She can afford the best. She probably goes to one of those boutique hormone replacement therapy clinics. We have two here in town and they aren’t covered by insurance, at least not the doctor’s visits. I had a friend that went to one. Pretty pricy. She had a pellet inserted in her hip for continuous release, and all kinds of things. She said her skin was never better, mood swings gone, sex drive back up.

    • Nibbi says:

      Man, that sounds rough.
Stay strong, lady !! My best to you !!

  25. Roxi says:

    It’s like an abaya

  26. Mindrew says:

Maybe she saw it lying on the couch and went ‘I’d look FABULOUS in that!’

  27. Who ARE These People? says:

Ponchos and wraps seem to be back and she’s just the right body type for them, so enjoy. Beautiful colour and fabric.

  28. Pandy says:

JLaw looks like she sleep walked to the premiere. Nightgown, slack jawed sleep face …

  29. lower-case deb says:

the dresses in the picture made me think that the dress code is: we’re having a sleepover! feel good movie and carpetsurfing and pedicures! dress accordingly!

  30. Bxhal says:

I love it. This is me at the movies: comfort first! Plus Angie is so beautiful and carries herself so gracefully she elevates this attire. I love her!

  31. bap says:

The Great Lady Angelina looks beautiful in whatever state of clothing she wears.

  32. Alexandria says:

Angie is always dressed like she wants to dial down the sexy and blend in i.e. black shapeless. Because she knows when she brings it, she blows everyone off the red carpet, the streets, the UN vicinity i.e Earth, with that face and bone structure. She’s an eclipse! Shelter me under ye blanket!

  33. Keaton says:

I know it’s weird but this makes me love Angelina even more. She’s completely comfortable being herself. YOU WEAR THAT BLANKET ANGIE! lol

  34. Shelllley says:

Hey… if I owned something as soft as Angie’s “blanket” looks…. you’d never get it off my person. Ever.
    That thing looks luxurious.

  35. bap says:

Angelina been wearing shawls and coats lately probably because its cold in some buildings. She also likes to be comfortable in her clothing. The most down to earth celebrity in Hollyweird.

  36. ANOTHER DAY says:

She is always gorgeous. And I wish I could wear that. I’m way too short, it would wear me.

AJ is the only woman on earth I might switch teams for 😉

  37. Eve V says:

I think Angelina looks absolutely gorgeous. This would look sloppy on most people, but the black clothing underneath, subtle make up, suede shoes, and her confidence elevate this look to elegant.
I don’t like Jen’s look. It’s a bridal nightgown and there’s no “there” in her expression.

  38. Grant says:

If anyone besides Angelina had worn that, the poor lass would be crucified in these comments… That ensemble is hideous; she so rarely gets it right sartorially, and this is no exception. Her hair looks lovely though.

  39. Malak says:

I think Angelina just wants to be comfortable. She has dressed like this before. I liked it better when the dress was white and the wrap light grey, Who cares what people say!

  40. Antonym says:

I want to know where I can buy one! I’m always cold and this looks easier to keep on (and more professional) than the blanket I currently use at work. It also looks ridiculously soft.

  41. Meh says:

I never wade into the comments on AJ stories for fear of my life but I had to this time to say WHY IS SHE SO BEAUTIFUL

  42. whybother says:

I dont know though, if I looks that good in ‘blanket look’, I’ll do the same

  43. d says:

The “blanket” is a pashmina, I think, albeit a very large one. Can get them almost anywhere in my city. Good quality pashminas are great for office environments where the air conditioning is cranked. Or as wraps as she’s wearing it. Not surprising that she’s wearing one, really. It fits with her style and international nods to fashion.
She looks ok; the stress and hauteur is off her face (and maybe the latter was just a pissy mood when she was with Pitt). She looks a lot happier without Pitt, that’s for sure. I have to wonder about him nowadays.

  44. Bug says:

Divorce suits Angelina. She looks so much better in these days, even if she surely is going through hard times. She looks stunning.
    I can’t wait to see Varda’s film.

  45. Kate says:

I love a good blanket! I wear mine everywhere. Good for her.

  46. Rae says:

I think she looks…good. Elegant, comfy and beautiful. You don’t have to show x amount of skin to look good.

  47. noway says:

Both women are just so striking in whatever they wear, and thank you for this story. All the crappy crazy stuff out there, and this just made me laugh a bit. Yes Angelina still looks gorgeous in a blanket and Jennifer look beautiful in whatever that nightgown/ hippy wedding dress she is in. Girls wear what you want. There are many days I want to go out in my comforter too!!!!!
