Matt Lauer won’t even defend Megyn Kelly’s many morning show problems

Megyn Kelly during an appearance on NBC's 'Late Night with Seth Meyers.'

Megyn Kelly is still struggling on morning TV. Because NBC is run by idiots, I guess no one thought “hey, I wonder if Megyn is going to come across as cold, unlikeable and minimally talented on morning television” before they offered her a huge contract. So, we’re stuck with Megyn until NBC shuffles her off somewhere else, which will probably be a while. For now, they’re trying to encourage her to find her range as an interviewer… a range which is severely limited, let’s say. They didn’t even trust her to do an interview with Corey Feldman alone. They had to bring in Matt Lauer:

This interview was widely criticized because Lauer and Kelly came across as A) victim-blaming, and B) like the onus was on Feldman to name names years after the fact, when it’s clear that he’s still very afraid of backlash. As for Megyn… well, even Lauer won’t defend her:

Et tu, Matt? While Megyn Kelly’s had a rocky start to her hour of “Today,” co-star Matt Lauer doesn’t seem to be defending her. When an industry insider remarked to Lauer last week that celebrities are being advised to avoid Kelly’s “Megyn Kelly Today” — amid ratings struggles and awkward snafus with famous guests — a Page Six spy overheard Lauer reply that he “gets it,” adding, “It’s a big problem for them,” meaning Kelly’s show. Insiders were stunned that the veteran “Today” host didn’t try to defend his new colleague.

We’re told publicists have been steering their clients to other shows, partly because of Kelly’s ailing ratings and partly because of the dust-ups with Jane Fonda and Debra Messing. In September — just two days into her run as host of the 9 a.m. hour of “Today” — Kelly upset Fonda by bringing up the actress’ plastic surgery past.

Another reason that Hollywood flacks are booking clients elsewhere is that Kelly is struggling to hang on to viewers. As Page Six recently reported, her numbers are nearly at an all-time low for the famed NBC morning show and she continues to drag down “Kathie Lee & Hoda.”

“This week was the lowest Kathie and Hoda have rated since 2010,” said a source. “It keeps getting worse. Megyn is killing them. It is a real problem and no one wants to book Megyn’s show,” the insider said. Another source added, “They can keep telling you about all the lunches they’re taking her to, but it’s not helping the ratings.”

But a rep for “Today” downplayed any drama, telling us: “Sounds like a few troublemakers are trying to stir up drama where there just isn’t any. Everyone’s doing just fine at the ‘Today’ show.”

Some might question the glee I feel about Megyn Kelly’s downfall, and whether we should support her just because she’s a woman in a man’s world or whatever. While I think Matt Lauer is a douchebag (for real), I chuckled at the idea of Lauer shrugging his shoulders and #NotMyProblem-ing the Megyn situation. Like, Megyn Kelly is the worst. Don’t support her just because she’s a woman. Terrible women don’t deserve to be supported when they’re terrible.

She could ask White Santa Claus to bring her better ratings for Christmas.

    WORD.

Totally agree. Watching her makes my flesh crawl. What idiot thinks ANYONE at Fox News Channel is employable outside of that building…

      • Phooey says:

Fox got rid of her because she was bias towards liberals. She should have fit right in at NBC.

  3. CynicalAnn says:

Matt Lauer isn’t known for his loyalty.

She should have been nowhere near Corey for a interview on this topic. Come to think of it, Matt should not have been there either. This was a straight up Savannah interview as she would have done right by the subject and topic. Whoever decided this was wrong.

This would have been an interview that Ann Curry would have been amazing at. She would have been empathetic and given Corey the interview he deserved. I wasn’t a fan of hers as an anchor, just because I big draw for me was the interaction between everyone. So she did great interviews because you could tell she cared, but when it came to group interaction, and joking and the sarcasm, she was a buzzkill. Doesn’t matter anymore anyway, i don’t watch it at all because of Megyn Kelly.

They can play to her strengths of politics and law. Not what she is doing now.. trying to force her to be something she is not.

I’m still baffled why they gave her a talk show. The should just let her do the 3rd hour of Today or kept her show as a political/news show. Still not great but Megyn isn’t talk show material.
