Taylor Swift is on track to have the best-selling album of 2017, no surprise

George Takei

I totally forgot that Taylor Swift was going to be the musical guest on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live. SNL isn’t a typical stop on Taylor’s promotional tour, but the promo for Reputation has been anything but typical. Apparently, this was Taylor’s first time on SNL since 2009, which was the time when she “joked” about Joe Jonas dumping her. Now, eight years later, Taylor isn’t joking anymore. Now she is The Snake Without Laughter. The rebranded Taylor is half-perpetual-victim and half-villainess, she can’t decide. She can’t decide between club bangers and twee love ballads. So we got a taste of both on SNL.

Here’s her performance of “Ready For It,” which is my favorite of all of the singles she’s released so far. This performance sounds crazily auto-tuned and her “natural” dancing skillz are questionable, but whatever. This performance also features Taylor clutching a snake microphone. Because she is the Queen of the Snakes but don’t you dare call her that or she’ll whine about you in a song!

And here’s “Call It What You Want,” the single she released last week. It’s supposed to be a love song but the lyrics are riddled with whining about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. At least this performance seemed more natural. Just a quick note though: the “winged” eye makeup combined with the thick bangs really changes the way her face looks, and it’s SO weird.

Obviously, people are buying this. They’re buying this at crazy levels. Reputation is on track to become the highest-selling album of the year… just in the first week or two of sales.

Taylor Swift’s Reputation is off to a red-hot start. The album sold around 700,000 copies in the U.S. on its first day of release, according to initial sales reports to Nielsen Music. The set was released at 12 a.m. ET on Nov. 10, through Big Machine Records. Its first day sales figure could grow larger, after all of Nielsen’s retail reporters have submitted their sales for the day.

If the album keeps up that sizzling sales pace, it could sell over 1 million copies in the tracking week ending Nov. 16. Further, according to industry sources, it is on track to earn Swift her largest sales week yet. Its debut week could surpass the debut frame of her last album, 2014’s 1989, which bowed with 1.29 million copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen Music.

If Reputation starts with over 1 million sold, it will secure Swift her fourth album with a million-selling week. She’s already the only act to have three different albums sell a million copies in a week, since Nielsen Music began tracking data in 1991. Her last three studio albums all launched with more than 1 million sold in their first weeks: 1989 (1.29 million), Red (2012, 1.21 million) and Speak Now (2010, 1.05 million).

Further, Reputation could become 2017’s biggest selling album after only one week on sale. Through the week ending Nov. 2, Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) is the year’s top seller, with 909,000 copies sold. (Sheeran is also featured on Reputation, as a guest artist on the song “End Game.”)

Reputation is primed to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated Dec. 2. If it arrives at No. 1, it will mark Swift’s fifth leader, following 1989, Red, Speak Now and Fearless (2008).

[From Billboard]

This doesn’t surprise me. I wonder if it surprises Taylor though? She took a chance with the promotion for this album by NOT doing any press ahead of the release. She changed up her patterns in a lot of ways, from the content of the songs to the way she promoted it to her “branding.” And it paid off. She’ll be gloating for years.

But I thought the walking snake emoji was over?

But I thought her whole album was trash?

I guess the alt-right princess played it right

    • Josie says:

I get the impression her sales are being bolstered by fans buying multiple copies, difficult to say until after the initial sales run.

      • ell says:

why do people come up with this crappy conspiracy theories? adele also sells tons of records, and other than her voice being beautiful her music is really not high quality at all. it’s not like the general public has sophisticated taste.

      • no no says:

It isn’t conspiracy. Her fans are very opne about it – they buy 15-2 albums to get concert tickets. And they are a competition in fandom, who will buy more. And if you say you don’t have money, there will be a bunch of her fans, who will tell that you aren’t a tru fan and you don’t love Tay. Go to Swifties blogs, First I was laughing at how stupid people can be, buy now it is very disturbing. They are really like a sect. Now they send a ton of hate on Twitter to Sam Smith because he likes some shady twitt about TS. They treat to kill him, cal him names becasue he is gay etc. This teen girls are nutts and she encourage them.

      • ell says:

i like taylor music, so i’m familiar with her fandom, and i know for a fact this isn’t true. it’s an exaggeration, it’s like maybe 1 or 2 insane stans doing that. that’s it lol

      • Josie says:

See other comments backing up my point, it’s not a conspiracy theory….

        Down the thread

      • ell says:

people agreeing with you isn’t backing up, it’s just echo chamber.

      • Nicole says:

There were literally people on twitter with 4 copies of the album on friday. Again this is because she set up a system where people get points for buying multiple copies. Its not a conspiracy TAYLOR SET UP THIS SYSTEM

      • Josie says:

Ell you sound like a secret Swifty 😂😂😂

      • no no says:

Also if you use UPS they give you no one but 4 album copies. And you also have album copie with her magaiznes and books.

      • Alessio says:

it’s not a conspiracy, she’s releasing THREE different editions: standard and two magazines, and the magazines are two parter, you’ll need both to have all the lyrics and pics. with this being said, she was always gonna sell a million copies and was always gonna be the highest selling of the year

      • Jaii says:

@no no I will disagree with u on one point , that the fans who can’t afford to buy her music are being called bad fans by others. I have seen so many esp on tumblr offering to gift others on iTunes or to give away the other cd when they have brought both magazines . The swifties can be rabid when it comes to others who they feel have attacked Taylor , but surprisingly they are very supportive to each other.

      • Madly says:

ELL is obviously in the dark about how crazy swift fans are or is one and thinks this is just normal behavior. Most definitely they are buying crazy amounts of records as the snake has set up concert tickets that way. Have to buy lots to get a good chance at it. Rigged systems don’t count.

      • Cranberry says:

“adele also sells tons of records, and other than her voice being beautiful her music is really not high quality at all.”

@ell, First I’m not an Adele fan. I don’t own any of her music. What makes Adele more authentic and “high quality” compared to TS is that she doesn’t use so many gimmicks in her music. She’s a straight forward love-ballad crooner, and she does her genre extremely well with real vocal chops that don’t NEED to be studio enhanced or auto-tuned. Plus she is able to convey a lot of heavy emotions in her singing.

They are both mainstream and big $ artists. Bus TS is pure pop, and generally ballad singers are going to be considered higher quality than the kind of pop TS does. Because of her sheer talent, her voice, Adele has earned a place among the greats of her genre like Whitney Houston, Celene Dion, etc.

Whereas with TS, no matter how many records she sells, musically she is not in the league of great pop artists that made real, quality contributions to music as a whole ie Michael Jackson, Beatles, David Bowie, Prince, Bjork, Devo and so many, many more. Trouble is the field is so big and varies enormously as to straight up pop or cross over RB or Rock, etc. Like I have trouble putting Rolling Stones in a pop category while others would not.

      • noway says:

Guess what it doesn’t matter. She still gets the money, and there would have to be a lot of repeat buyers to have this make a dent in her sales numbers. Also, her concerts that sold out weren’t really a lot of people just one person and a bunch of clones. Okay if it makes you feel better to believe it is just one crazy fan out there buying all albums. Hopefully, she’ll send her fan a good birthday present. Well she at least has two fans, as my daughter gave me all the reasons why I should advance her allowance so she could buy the album.

    • Ashley says:

I’m fairly certain the majority of her fans are immature Tweens. I’m still somewhat young (20 years old) and I know everyone in my crowd has phased out of her music. She certainly isn’t considered “cool” by any means. Most people my age are into EDM, rap, R&B rock etc and have way better taste. Not that it matters, but it’s interesting she sells so much since her music is considered the cheesiest pop out there.
On a superficial note, looks like one of those 80’s heavy metal dudes. Her hair is the worst. Her facial expressions and dancing are also awful.

  2. A Croatian says:

I am not a fan of hers, and I find her dancing awkward, I find her expressing her smugness during singing irritating. But damn, Call it what you want was beautiful on SNL.
    She knows what she’s doing.

    • Fran says:

Yep, loved the performance of Call it what you want.
People saying she was lip-synch in both songs, you can tell she had a backing track in the first song, but she was definitely singing live on it.

    • Laur says:

She looks like me when I try to dance, so I just don’t try 😂 it must suck having to dance in front of a tv audience when it doesn’t come naturally.

    • Handwoven says:

The attempt at sexy dancing and sexy faces was tragic, and hilarious.

    • Ava says:

I’m gonna go against the grain. I thought both her performances on SNL were good and I was positively surprised by the dancing. Great flow and she had good backup-dancers. (they lip-synced the backupvoices though, didn’t they?)

  3. Redgrl says:

She has the worst hair ever. That’s all I’ve got.

    • Lucy2 says:

Right? Best selling album, but always the worst hair.

I kind of wish Adele or Beyoncé would drop a surprise album next week, and overtake her sales.

      • Milla says:

Not Adele please. She’s always singing the same song and she destroyed Fastlove at the Grammys…

How about someone new? Or Solange gets more coverage? Or Paloma Faith?

      • ell says:

adele’s music is also very generic, the only reason why she gets a pass is because admittedly she’s much more likeable than taylor. but let’s no pretend adele is music is actually good in any way shape or form.

      • cool girl says:

Yes now we have a proof Ell is a true crazy Swiftie :). They hate Adele, just like Tay Tay hate her. They think she stole her GG and that she is so basic and not so talentless as Snake. So they nead to show that on avery ocasion. All sweety – Adele sold more that Snake, even with zero promo last time. And Tay Tay is everywhere now with promo, even is she saids otherwise.

      • ell says:

lol cool girl, you’re obviously not very familiar with my comments if you think i even know anything about who won what. i don’t think i ever watched one of those music awards in my entire existence, and i literally have no idea what a GG is; is it golden globe? i just think adele’s music is boring… because to me it is.

some of you lot are obsessed with conspiracies, i’m not being funny. if i were someone’s stan, trust me, i’d openly admit it.

      • raptor says:

I’ll back you up here, ell. Adele is boring as hell, and her songs about her exes are no less creepy than Taylor’s are.

      • Lynnie says:

The Hive think Bey is about to drop something since she has her braids in lol, so you may get your wish 😂

      • Madly says:

Eminem is going to drop an album soon. He and Beyoncé just dropped a single.

      • Madly says:

Adele is everything swifty wishes she could be and writes her own stuff too that does ‘t Sound like a second grader wrote it. She also can kill it in live performances while the snake has a terrible live singing voice.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

These discussions are a bit ridiculous. They’re both pop music, there’s always someone who finds that boring. They’re both extremely successful so they’re doing something right. I think the only one who separates herself is Bey, frankly. Only because she’s an entertainer and let’s face it, neither Adele nor Taylor will come out with their own Lemonade any time soon.

      • Otaku fairy says:

Adele is a better singer than Taylor though.

      • Americano says:

I think Adele is generic and boring too. I really don’t get the hype. Who I really thought was a great talent was Amy Winehouse. Just my opinion.

      • Lucy2 says:

You guys missed my point- I wasn’t saying one is better than the other, but that I would like someone to outsell her album, so she doesn’t get the highest selling album of the year with this passive aggressive victim crap.
Who could outsell her quickly? Adele or Beyonce. Not many others.

    • RuddyZooKeeper says:

That’s what I came to say. What happened? It really ages her. Maybe because it’s so dated. As in this was my mother’s style in 1988.

      • Redgrl says:

@ruddyzookeeper & @sam – ha! Yes! Very Dee Snyder! Whether her hair is straight or curly it’s consistently terrible. I don’t listen to her music but every time I used to see her pop up on TV or here all I could think was “wow, all that money, all those stylists and she always has the worst, worst hair.” And now, I actively dislike her as the alt-right aryan poster girl – with the worst hair.

    • Sam says:

      Dee Snider ‘s twin

  4. Chef Grace says:

I am just here for those adorable cats.
    😉

    • Kitten says:

      Same!
I notice that Olivia’s ears have “popped” a bit like Meredith’s did as she got a bit older. This happened to both my Foldies too, especially my boy Fold. They are just the BEST kitties. Sigh ♥

      • detritus says:

I want a foldie so bad, but its a toss between that and a rescue bengal.
tell me about your foldies and their personality. are they charming weirdos? noisy sweethearts? snuggle hogs?
full disclosure i will use your comment to try to persuade my partner from getting a husky to getting a foldie.

      • Kitten says:

You can get rescue foldies too! http://scottishfoldrescue.homestead.com/

They are super-sweet, affectionate kitties, good with kids, VERY snuggly. They love to sit on their butts like people and often stand with one pay raised in the air. They are very mellow and not particularly active/rambunctious. They don’t jump up on countertops or cabinets–they stay mostly on the ground and easy-to-reach areas. They will follow you around from room-to-room and absolutely LOVE their human. They’re goofy kitties and definitely don’t possess the regality and athleticism of a Bengal. They are just plush, puffy kitties that will hug your side all day and night.

I would LOVE a husky though. They are SUCH beautiful creatures. If I didn’t have my cats to worry about, I would def. consider it 🙂

    • magnoliarose says:

I do like her cat love and animal love in general. One of the funniest things I saw with her was her Great Dane trying to snuggle on her lap.

  5. Elkie says:

I’ll probably buy the CD because Max Martin & Shellback are geniuses (genii?), but I’ll never stop being embarrassed for her “sexy” persona.

    Please make it stop.

    • FORTYFOUR says:

Yeah agree… really if u avoid her videos, interviews, live performances etc – if u can sustain the illusion it’s simeone else singing, u can enjoy the music. Taylor is just personally annoying and she can’t dance for sh•t

  6. Nicole says:

If she’s gloating she should. If I could get my dumb fans to buy 4-5 copies of my album for the chance at tour tickets I would be laughing all the way to the bank.
Also I know Swifties were losing it at her dancing but I found it so painful. But then again those moves would not get you invited back to the BBQ.

    • TaraT3 says:

4-5 is the low end. There was potential for up to 13 pre-order “codes” that would help concert ticket chances.

I mean, she’s obviously a power played in the industry. But, these numbers are inflated.

      • Nicole says:

Omg seriously? Wow. That’s criminal genius right there.
Still not as impressive as Adele who sold 2 mil the first week and people maybe bought two copies of her album.

      • ell says:

@Nicole it’s literally made up lol. i don’t understand why some of you are buying into this conspiracy theory.

      • Nicole says:

Well i was on twitter friday where fans were posting pictures of their multiple copies. Taylor’s concert system is set up this way. Its not a conspiracy to see that fans will buy into this system to get tickets to her concert. Just like the fans that had their streaming on loop to boost her numbers. Stans will do crazy crap

      • Josie says:

She did a deal with Ticketmaster:

      • Meryl says:

Ell, I follow 5ish casual, yet engaged Taylor Swift fans on tumblr because we have cross over fandoms. They, (as I said, casual, but still involved. Def not Stan level) have each purchased 2-4. And I’ve seen the threads of fans who have purchased well over 10 copies. It’s not a conspiracy.

      • TaraT3 says:

Ell: ….But it’s not made up?

Sure, only a few over the top devoted fans are the ones showing up to Target to completely buy out the album, but there are definitely a very high number of fans who have purchased multiple copies.

That’s not a swing at Swift at all or a “conspiracy” as you say. It’s clearly the result she hoped for by setting up her sales system the way she did. She offers multiple different “editions” that are largely the same with the exception of 2 magazines or pre-sale codes. She had multiple HUGE companies that she partnered with for the promo and distribution, each offering a slightly tweaked version than the next. She didn’t make individual songs available for purchase on her album, you have to buy the entire thing. She didn’t make it available on streaming sites. All of those things are to drive first week sales. And that’s fine, girl deserves her money if her fans are willing to shell it out. But let’s just call a spade a spade, here.

      • noway says:

This part of the thread is making me laugh so hard. Do you really think the artists care if they have 1 million fans who buy the album, or 750,000 or less who buy it if they sell 1.5 million copies. Guess what it doesn’t make them less successful. I can tell you the record company doesn’t care who buys it. My reaction to this, is if it is as big as some on here think it is, wow this is marketing gold, because you still get the money and you’ve created the hype. She must be a genius. Kind of reminds me of artist from a previous era putting things in liner notes of albums for fans to buy multiple copies. If you don’t know what liner notes are google it? In my lifetime I think I have bought at least 20 copies in different versions of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Who knew I was inflating their fan base.

      • Cranberry says:

        @noway

You mean her marketing team that she pays loads $$$ to is “genius”. Granted I’m sure she’s very cooperative with their ideas and even collaborates with them.

    • no no says:

Ell, why made up? Her fans are very proud of it. Just talk to them or read they blogs. You so badly want to make it to look fake, but it isn’t. She made a sell system for her concert tickets – more albums, books etc. you buy, more chances you has to get a ticket. There are articles about it. So it isn’t suprise that Swifties buy 10-15 copies of album. So what is made up here?

      • JA says:

You can’t rationalize with a swifty! Ell as you might have figured from her defending Taylor in any comment that throws shade. Nothing to see here…Swift is a musical genius and she won best album/ most albums sold fair and square and you all are just haters who hate on perfection!! Eh, fools and their money :-/

      • ell says:

@JA, why don’t we discuss the stuff i actually said, as opposed to what you made up in your head? i.e. quote me a comment in which i wrote TS is a musical genius and perfection. go on, i’m waiting.

  7. Tiffany says:

After reading some of the comments from here about how fans who by multiple copies can get better tickets to her concert, no I am not surprised and neither is Swifty. She and her people made sure it would happen.

  8. cool girl says:

One person told me that she saw some Swiftie fan, who bought in Target all her albums for 400$. This is how she made this numbers. There are her fans who bought 10-20 copies of album, because they want to have chance to get a ticket concert. She is milking her fans from money as always – her sales numbers are fake. It is difrent when milion people buy for one album, than 20 000 buy multi copies. And remember that her Daddy likes to buy a lot copies of her previous albums. And she made a big promo for this album UPS, Apple, Target, A&T, She is evrywhere. I went to cinema and there were she before movie. So please – she isn’t Bey to sell album without promo. She isn’t Adele too.

    • Alleycat says:

It also doesn’t hurt that she took this album off streaming and you can’t buy singles off this album, only the entire thing. Of course she was going to get big numbers, but the total will definitely be off.

      • Miles says:

If she put her album on streaming, the first week numbers would be even bigger because now charts/numbers account for streaming and add it. Adele didn’t put 25 on streaming. Are you going to discredit her sales too?
Taylor proved once again that the whole sales are dead thing is a myth.

Also almost every single huge pop star has endorsement deals. Like why wouldn’t you want to get paid for a company to promote your stuff….

    • magnoliarose says:

I don’t understand why fans cant just like their star without being defensive and delusional. People have a right not to like Taylor and say what they want. The multiple big buys are true.
Her career has always been about significant marketing and media manipulation. They aren’t deep songs. Pop for teenagers and that is fine. She found her audience, and they like it.
      *shrug*

  9. Hkk says:

I hope this will keep her from flaunting relationships for the press!

  10. Izzie the Other says:

Of course she did. She’s every middle-America white persons dream. She’s not a threat to white men or women in anyway. She will always be the highest selling female.

  11. monette says:

I could only stomach to listem to half of the Call it what you want video because of her crazy smug expression. The song was nice, but she was freaking smurking.
I wish karma would bite her where it hurts her the most: money. But I guess not this year, not with this album.
    No worries, I’ll wait…

  12. Lizzie says:

    worst hair

  13. purple prankster says:

I am surprised she’s doing so well but I was also surprised that trump won and they are so similar in so many ways

  14. cleveland girl says:

Love both songs. LOVE her. I find many of the comments here ridiculous. If you don’t like her, don’t listen to her.
But she is very talented. She is an incredible song writer and singer, and has proved that multiple times over several years.
Yes…she is emotional, and maybe got a little dramatic this past year, but that does not diminish her talent.

    • cool girl says:

Incredible writer and singer? Girl please. Wow Swifties really take to heart Goebbels words “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”. She is a mediocre songwriter on a level of 16 yo and a very bad singer. She doesn’t has a voice and falsify. She can’t dance too, so the qestion is – Why this mediocre girl made such a carreer? Well her fans are now like cult, so she can sell albums even if her cats sang on them (and it will be better that her voice.

      • Commenter says:

Why isn’t cleveland girl allowed to think she’s good? Different strokes and so on.

      • cleveland girl says:

We clearly have different taste in music, and that is fine. I found her writing on Fearless, Red, 1989, and yes…even Reputation to be thoughtful and entertaining.
When I don’t care for an artist I choose to change the channel rather than insult them.

      • Laura says:

While I don’t necessarily like all of her songs, I can see that she’s good at writing a catchy pop song, and I do think there can be a cleverness to her lyrics that you don’t always hear in pop. That said, I think she sings about her red lips too much, and a lot of the singles off 1989 annoyed me, but I can see why she’s popular. She doesn’t have the best voice ever (I think her vibrato is very bad), but a lot of songwriters don’t, and after listening to her latest album I can appreciate how she uses it to the best of her ability to portray the mood of the song, and it seems like she grew as a vocalist since 1989.

      • Millenial says:

I don’t like her very much any more, but I think it’s silly to deny that she’s a talented song writer. At minimum a successful songwriter, whether you like the content or not. She’s written enough hits, for herself and for others, that I would think people could stop with this argument.

There’s a million other things to say about her, but the argument that she’s not a good songwriter always comes across as “hater” to me.

    • Beth says:

I don’t like Taylor or her genre of music, but I can still comment on her. Incredible song writer? She seems to go through guy after guy so she has the topic of an ex boyfriend to write these songs about. I’ve heard her voice on these few new songs, and it cracked me up listening to her trying to sound sexy, but instead sounding out of breath and exhausted. Like her or hate her, we all have own opinions

    • cool girl says:

Of course Clev girl can like it, but please with this bulshit that TS is an incredible song writer and singer. It is so extra even as for fan. Ok l can like Madonna but I want say she is an incredible singer, she has a weak voice. You can like her, but stop with “she is the best in everything singer of last 100 years” narrative.

      • ell says:

both stans and her haters are super extra all the time.

      • cleveland girl says:

We clearly have different taste in music, and that is fine. I found her writing on Fearless, Red, 1989, and yes…even Reputation to be thoughtful and entertaining.
When I don’t care for an artist I choose to change the channel rather than insult them.

    • ell says:

      the comments are ridiculous.

i mean, there’s plenty to criticise when it comes to taylor, like when she’s trying to shut down randos on the internet, or the fact she refuses to speak against nazis borrowing her image so be my guest. but the idea that her fans buy soooooo many copies and that’s why she sells so much is pretty pathetic tbh.

    • Josie says:

Not exactly, maybe state your opinion instead of your opinion as fact.

In your opinion she’s very talented.

I agree she’s a talented songwriter and very good at selling herself. As a singer and a performer IMO she’s overrated.

Her narcissism has seriously put me off her.

Ell – the pre sales of her album were something like 700k, and fans are buying multiple copies; it’s a deal to get a better chance at concert tickets
      ‪http://mashable.com/2017/08/25/taylor-swift-ticketmaster-reputation/ ‬

      • Lady D says:

Josie, the proof is all over the internet about fans buying multiple copies. Ell just doesn’t want to believe, and that’s fine too.

  15. ds says:

Can’t help it; all of the songs are like they belong to Eurovison. Meaning they’re just mediocre pop tunes. I don’t get the hype. Maybe I’m getting too old.

    • milla says:

      Love this comment.

The only cd i got this year is LWP by George Michael. Now thats an album.

      • jetlagged says:

I caught his documentary on cable this weekend. His voice really was heaven-sent. There will never be another like him.

      • Milla says:

        @jetlegged
I don’t believe in idols. I’m a grown woman, but when he died i cried for days. Cos he had beautiful soul and every concert was just mesmerizing. That’s a proper star.

Imo, Prince, Cher, George, Bjork, well Madonna, despite not being my cup of tea, Freddie, Hendrix, Bowie, they were real stars. Cos you cannot replace them. Voice wise, Whitney Houston will always be above all females singers, so i don’t really care who sold most or who got more awards, because they don’t have big chances to be timeless.

      • ds says:

@jetlagged UUUU thanks for the tip. I’ve been wondering what to watch these days. Popcorn and tissues ready.

    • Lynnie says:

I was under the impression that Eurovision was a talent show for underrated talent. If not, tho I wouldn’t be surprised. Also I agree perfect comment is perfect.

    • Ava says:

If I could downvote this comment, I would.
It shows very little understanding for both, Eurovision and modern Pop-Music.

  16. Eric says:

Does anyone but the artist care about album sales?
    It’s quality over quantity.

In 20 years these albums will be in the recycle bin of history whilst The Downward Spiral, Parachutes, Absolution, and OK Computer are revered and played by the generations to follow.

    • Josie says:

Exactly, does anyone remember Vanilla Ice’s debut album? It sold 15 million copies.

      • no no says:

And they won Grammy 🙂 How many Grammys have Nirvana or Led Zeppelin? Recors and selle means nothing. In 20 years people will listen to Bey and Adele, but her music is so basic that most people won’t recognize witch white chic sang it – Demi, Taytay or some other.

    • jammypants says:

      You have good taste!

      • Eric says:

        Me? Good taste?
Take Jeff Buckley’s Grace album for a full spin. Or Travis The Man Who or Keane’s Hope and Feats or Under the Iron Sea
        Jesus
Of just listen to the Travis song As You Are
        Jesus

    • Give “In Spades” by the Afghan Whigs a whirl. So good.

    • magnoliarose says:

That is where my tastes run. I don’t like a lot of Pop music because I think it is unimaginative and as original as a slice of white bread. Her songs are painful to listen to and remind me of songs for a teen movie on ABC Family channel. Like a precocious 13-year-old girl wrote them. Even for everyday Pop, they are bad. Katy Perry belongs in the same camp. Too deliberate and packaged without emotion.mnm

I prefer Lorde by a longshot. It is part of our morning rotation on the way to school with my oldest kids. FKA Twigs, Sevdaliza, Santigold throwbacks like Bjork, Kate Bush, Lauryn Hill, PJ Harvey and others.

    • Veronica says:

I mean…that’s technically true of any era of music. There are plenty of “classic” songs still around that were considered part of the pop music phenomenon when they first came out.

  17. Jaii says:

I think the bubble of the internet, with social media , gossip sites and so on gives a distorted view of what we think the GP think , your guys election proves that. I’m a closet Taylor fan in RL , and I’ve got to say this album is far better than 1989, there isn’t a song I skip except for maybe LWYMMD. And I’ve seen far more of my friends buy Rep than I would have ever expected too .

    • LizLemonGotMarried says:

I’ve probably played Don’t Blame Me 15 times on my drive to nashville this morning. I was SURE Hozier had a co-writing credit it was so damn good. Thank

      • Jaii says:

I find I have a different fav since Friday daily , I’ve got to say the petty in me today absolutely loves “this is why we can’t have nice things” but yesterday I couldn’t get enough of “delicate”. I never had that with 1989 , but did with Red .

      • LizLemonGotMarried says:

I sing along with Nice Things too! And Delicate is pretty. I also like CIWYWT. But…Don’t Blame Me hits me right in my sweet spot, because Andrew Hozier-Byrne can GET IT all day long.

      • Veronica says:

I think “Don’t Blame Me” is probably my favorite off the album. “Delicate” is a close runner up. “Ready For It” is a pretty great treadmill song.

    • Kate says:

I really like it too. Not as good as 1989 in my opinion, but I’ve still been listening on repeat. So far (to me) the singles released are the weaker songs, especially LWYMMD and Gorgeous. I Did Something Bad is my favorite I think – or maybe Don’t Blame Me.

    • Veronica says:

*shrugs* I’m 31, and I bought it since I liked 1989 so much. I’m past the age where I feel the need to justify my musical tastes. I’ve got plenty of other albums from all over the spectrum on my iPod if I need to meet some mystical level of music cred.

  18. Commenter says:

I’m always left disappointed by how many comments focus on her looks; her hair (I like curly hair), her not being “sexy” as if that is a character flaw, her body in general but her boobs in particular.

    • Jayna says:

      I like her hair.

      • Lady D says:

I paid a lot of money to have my hair look like that all through the 80’s and into the early 90’s. I loved it and still do. Looking at her hair makes me want it again. Not so sure it would work on a 57-year-old.

    • Kirsten Schroeter says:

Me too! I like her hair a lot, actually. I also think tearing apart any woman for her appearance regardless of a distaste for her music, opinions or whatever is counter intuitive to coming together as women.

    • Sullivan says:

Yeah, I get a little uncomfortable when so many comments are focused on trashing her looks.

    • Kate says:

I generally like her hair too. The curly bangs are not my favorite (as a fellow curly haired gal) but overall I think its usually pretty cute.

  19. MeloMelo says:

She looks way too awkward in the ready for it performance. She moves exactly like I do when Im lip synching, which is not a good look when you have an audience.

  20. Anna nuttall says:

I finally got to listen to this at the weekend and my god the album is so so bad. There nothing catchy or interesting to listen to. It sounds like a very rushed album and filled with b-tracks from 1989. I really do think Taylor Swift has lost her way.

    • Jules says:

She doesn’t make music for 13 year old; she actually is a 13 year old. Today Howard Stern was discussing the steps Sirius took when she went to perform. They locked down several flowers, put petals all over her piano , covered every hallway so no one would see her, and was flanked by 2 dozens security guards. But, there have been several times recently where she can’t throw her weight around anymore and she will have to take accountability for her actions one day soon. It is really sad that the “biggest” thing in music is so vapid and immature.

  21. Right says:

I read the lyrics from this new record out of curiosity and had only 2 thoughts:
1- if he ever breaks up with her, she’ll kill him.
2- Chica’s having the greatest bang of her life.

  22. ell says:

she’s gained some weight and it looks good on her.

    • Hannah says:

I think that’s just her sans photo/videoshop figure.

    • Josie says:

She gained weight last year, but has put on more since. Something about her is off but I can’t say what; maybe it’s the awful hair.

    • hilariouso says:

I agree! The weight she’s gained (small amount, but still) had really made her look even better. Dare I say…sexier? Thicker? Dunno.

    • magnoliarose says:

I am surprised Baby Bump watch hasn’t started somewhere in the universe. It does suit her though.

  23. QueenB says:

I mean Trump won the presidency. Is it really that surprising?

  24. Fleurucci says:

Super cute kitty! Too bad these vids don’t work in Canada / Quebec

  25. DiligentDiva says:

Love her or Hate her, this chick always manages to stay relevant. Personally, I found the album to be bad, 1989 was much better than this and the marketing for that was better as well.

    • ell says:

reputation has a bunch of very good songs, but so many are forgettable. i hate gorgeous and the album sorts of falls apart in the last few songs.

      • DiligentDiva says:

I don’t think it has “a bunch of very good songs” there are like 2 that are decent enough. It’s full of bland songs, so many of them are just bleak and stupid.
Nothing on the album is like “Love Story” “You belong with me” “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together” “I knew you were Trouble” “Shake it off” (annoying but it’s catchy and gets stuck in your head) “Blank Space” “Wildest Dreams” and “Out of the Woods” Those are all of her best songs, yea they were music master pieces but they were catchy on the radio and were enjoyable to the ear for the most part.
“Ready for it…” it’s okay enough, but Taylor’s last albums were better.

      • ell says:

agreed. i think the general consensus even among fans is that it’s ok but it’s not a memorable album.

      • DiligentDiva says:

Considering all that happened to Taylor since 1989 this album could have been memorable. I find this to be such wasted potential. She had a chance to grow and blew it!

      • LucyHoneychurch says:

New Year’s Day is vintage Taylor though. Getaway Car should have been her first single off this album.

    • LucyHoneychurch says:

Have you listened to all the songs yet? Are You Ready For It, I Did Something Bad, Don’t Blame Me, So It Goes, and Getaway Car are all very catchy pop songs. I personally think Getaway Car is something that would have fit in very well on 1989.

New Year’s Eve and Call It What You Will are also vintage Taylor and will make her fans very happy.

Look What You Made Me Do and Gorgeous are two of the weaker songs on the album. I’m not sure what made them decide to release them first.

    • DiligentDiva says:

I’ve listened to all of them. Don’t Blame Me and Ready for It are the only one’s worth anything, New Years Day is okay but forgettable. Call it What You Will is just awkward sounding.
I Did Something Bad is horrible for a lot of reasons (Just like with LWYMD Taylor’s Gaslighting the situation in her favor), Getaway Car is crap because her vocals suck. Both those songs give me a bad taste in my mouth, the way she treated Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston isn’t right. Harris and Hiddleston didn’t do anything to be treated like that. Taylor’s entire career is about exposing men for treating her badly, and she just turns around sings a song about treating two guys horribly who have done nothing to deserve it?
The songs about them are gross.

      • LucyHoneychurch says:

You sound like your dislike of how she handled her relationships with Harris and Hiddleston are affecting whether you like the songs or not. You can think she treated Hiddleston poorly while still thinking Getaway Car is a catchy tune.

      • DiligentDiva says:

Yea it can effect but that’s part of the song. I didn’t find it catchy, maybe it’s because I find the whole topic distasteful but I didn’t like it. For whatever reason I found this album lacking, Taylor isn’t amazing in my eyes (I really don’t I understand why she has so many fans) but I do enjoy her songs at times. I didn’t enjoy this album though.

  26. Otaku Fairy says:

Not happy, but not surprised, to see her succeed. (I have no trouble believing these stories about certain people buying multiple copies of her albums though)

Deplorables on conservative sites over the past week have been writing more gross thinkpieces praising her for ‘not alienating so many people’ by staying Trump-tolerant and not criticizing white supremacy. They portray her as a victim being persecuted by cruel, ugly ‘feminazis’ who can’t just politely tolerate racism and sexism as a difference of opinion. Even at the Washington Post, there’s an anti-choice, Trump-sympathizing White Feminist saying similar things. In a nutshell, the ditzy Aryan fauxminist blogger glosses over the white supremacy issue like it’s nothing, argues that feminism means any woman should be free to fight against the human rights of other women and girls while still being uncritically accepted by other feminists, and implies that feminists who aren’t tolerant of racism and sexism are the real problem. The articles (and their comment sections) give a nice little glimpse at the mentality and politics of some of Swifty’s fans.
Here’s the one from the Feminist4Trump:
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/posteverything/wp/2017/11/09/feminist-attacks-on-taylor-swift-reveal-something-very-ugly-about-the-movement/?utm_term=.22d460da0a1e

    • cool girl says:

Well now her fans spread hate at Sam Smith because he likes on Twitter some shade tweet about TS. They are so homophobic bullies that all-right guys look silly compared to them. They literally treat in they twitts to kill him and wish him the worst. They do it with all people who say or do something shady towards Tay TAy (like bulling and making fun of Micheal J. Fox Parkinson illnes). This is a big bunch of peole who stan her. And she never said a word about it (well she said thank you for bullieng J. Fox – she saw it as they fight for her).

      • Kirsten Schroeter says:

I would consider myself a Taylor Swift fan. I’m a grown woman with a job and I bought the album and love it. I’m also not a homophobic bully….at all….

      • Jayna says:

It sounds like all the other top pop girls with a certain immature segment of their rabid fan base that goes nuts on twitter in a vicious way. Lady Gaga’s being the worst.

    • magnoliarose says:

I read that and my eyes hurt from rolling them.

  27. Fleurucci says:

I think she’s mainly had nice hair other than now. It’s just hard to accept curly bangs they are so random. It doesn’t stop her from being attractive but there’s something off about it, sorry Taylor. However I disagree with who is saying it’s aging, she looks (acts too ?😉) younger than her age, not older and with this hair she looks more like an unusually pretty hipster model in vogue, American apparel, or urban outfitters.
Her hair was really nice and flattering when she was with harry. I’m guessing she’d prefer to stand out now a la Beyoncé Rihanna Gaga in stead of being basic cute hence the in your face hair

    • DiligentDiva says:

I think the hairstyle is too big/heavy for her face, which makes it seem off and ages her in some regard.
If you look at Taylor she’s got these very small features, small eyes, lips, and nose, so when this heavy hair look it weighs her down. She looked better with that her sleek bob she had promoting 1989. It was a very flattering and made fit her features nicely. The heavy hair hides her eyes, makes her features seem smaller then they are.

      • Fleurucci says:

I don’t know that her features are small maybe it’s more her face is small? Not sure who could pull of curly bangs though, maybe Beyoncés step sister who was in pretty little liars, or Yara who’s in Blackish but it’s not a style for most. In the past divas like Mariah Whitney Celine didn’t lean away from flattering and classically trendy looks but now it’s the norm to be shocking and not just wear what’s cute contemporary and flattering . I think TS leaning into that, she’s clever (or her team is)

  28. Becks says:

I just cant believe there are that many people that STILL are interested in her music. Even with all the “changes” and “transformations” her songs all sound very similar, and she is just…..bland. She’s a white girl pissed at anyone who has dared tell her she’s not the GOAT, and I would think most people would be tired of it by now. But apparently not.

    • Lynnie says:

Never underestimate the market for basicness and mediocrity. It will always be here to stay unfortunately.

    • Artemis says:

Can’t believe it either. Nobody was liking the 3 songs that came out except stans. They didn’t do well in the charts from what I understand yet people did a 180. Those 3 songs are exactly what the rest of the album is so what changed? I honestly do not get it! So this girl can’t dance but is making popmusic that you need to dance to and Britney Spears she is not and will never be (LSA called her Rhythmless Nation and I howled). She can’t sing either after more than a decade in the business and having more than enough money to work on that voice. Her lyrics are OK but juvenile and actually regressed from previous albums (she is repeating themes and words very obviously). Reputation is not quality work based on its lyrics alone. Her message is non-existent and contradictory: she sings she’s not a bad girl but wants to act bad and tough and ‘own’ being a snake yet the whole album is about how the media (haterz) don’t know the real her and the negativity hurt her meaning she’s not this evil snake she was made out to be. Her message is confusing as heck and she has NO identity as a popstar(let).

The beauty of previous popstars was that they did grow up and they were self-aware about their flaws that were enhanced and exploited by the media so they could infantilize and humiliate them because they’re women and didn’t appreciate their contribution to the music landscape. TS WANTS to be seen as a victim and refuses to grow up but TS is treated like a goddess by the media in comparison to how they used to treat popstars like Xtina and Britney!

1989 had a cool theme (finding herself again and not needing a man, learning to appreciate friendships etc) but now she’s in a happier place because she got a man…like??? Where are her female friends now? And people buy into this? I only like 2 songs off the album and while I’m not a music critic I think I’m smart enough to know that this album is not groundbreaking, anybody could have sung these songs (and she ripped off other artists btw). It’s not worth the accolades the media is giving her. TS is another sign of Trump’s America. Her relationship with the media alone is eerily similar in it’s entertaining dysfunction.

  29. Kirsten Schroeter says:

    Here I go….

I bought it and I love it lol

  30. Freddy Spaghetti says:

I guess I’m in the minority, but I thought she was great during both songs, but especially the second, on SNL. Hadn’t thought about buying the album, but might now.

  31. Shannon says:

I don’t buy albums ever these days. At most I’ll download a track or two. That being said, I do find her stuff catchy for the most part (some more than others). I thought she did great on SNL. I don’t think she’s an alt-right princess, but it would be nice to see her just say it but since she’s apparently gone all “no interviews” or whatever? Maybe she’ll get to it eventually, I hope so. As for “and if you do she’ll whine about you in a song about it” the question is, why would you care? If Taylor Swift whining about you in a song is the worst problem you face in your life, consider yourself blessed.

    • Commenter says:

      I agree with everything, Shannon.

    • Lynnie says:

“Maybe she’ll get to it eventually, I hope so.”

The Aryan princess/neo-Nazi links have been with her ever since the start of her career and not once can she say anything disavowing that, but she can can go after a blogger with 275 followers for asking why that’s so? Nah Taylor had her chance, and by staying silent, especially in this climate, she shows her true colors none of them good.

      • Shannon says:

Well, not being one to follow Neo-Nazis myself, I wouldn’t be aware of their musical tastes or who they’ve followed and “been with.” Does that make it Taylor’s fault? No. A bunch of people could come out and say I do meth with them. Does that make it true? No. But should she say something? At this point, yeah, she should just shut it down. I agree with that.

      • magnoliarose says:

That is when you say I don’t do meth. Simple.
No one says they can’t buy her album, but when they say she is one of them and does not disavow them, then it is a problem.

    • hilariouso says:

      Oh Shannon…..

  32. Missy says:

Funny how the TS stans are high-jacking the comments. It’s okay, not everyone likes her music. A lot of people are put off by her antics.

  33. Kitty says:

At the end of the day, all I know is that in my opinion, Taylor doesn’t seem like she will be on the top list of pop stars who made an impact on music like MJ, Madonna, The Beatles, ect… did.

    • Ira says:

She will. TS is a milennial version of Madonna. Madonna intrigued the public with sex, meanwhile TS draws attention by over sharing. Both of them will not be remembered for their music.

      • Artemis says:

To summarise Madonna’s career like that is an insult. Unlike TS, Madonna came up by herself in the club scene, not by her father’s money or connections like TS. In fact she rejected her father’s pleas to come back home and preferred to be hungry and poor hustling her way up. Madonna prided herself in being a dancer who wanted more as she recognized what a dog’s life it is and explored many different things successfully (playing instruments and learning how to sing properly) and some things unsuccessfully (acting).

Madonna’s songs were not about the act of sex all the time. She advocated teen pregnancy and made it about choice instead of chastising and punishment for female sexual agency. She sang emotionally about losing friends to AIDS and why people are cruel in relation to homophobia and she would know as she lost many friends and was in the thick of it during the 80s and 90s. She sang about domestic violence, losing a parent, her difficult relationship with her father and in extension religion and still loving her ex-husband (Sean Penn) on LAP. And she continued to give fans a different look into her life instead of the same themes that TS does. LAP was like Janet Jackson’s Velvet Rope, true artpop interweaving many different themes and genres in a cohesive manner to showcase the different facets and inner workings of popstars who are usually seen as empty-headed and interchangeable. Those two albums changed that perception. And it’s something TS will never achieve because her music is the same as her patterns are the same and she’s clearly emotionally stunted. A true confessional lyricist would be Fiona Apple, Alanis Morisette or Tori Amos, TS could never do what they achieve lyric wise but then they’re not as palatable and packaged as TS is so culturally less relevant.

TS can’t sing or dance and she’s relatable because she’s mediocre. Just looking at Madonna’s exterior (the muscles which takes tremendous effort and discipline) shows a woman who is above average and uncompromising.

      • Dj Jazzy Jen says:

        No, so much no IRA.

      • dsfdgfhgjh says:

        bless this post.

      • Nev says:

your wrong here but oh well…

        WORD ARTEMIS!

      • Cranberry says:

Mostly agree with @Ira that Madonna’s music is not as memorable in the scheme of pop/rock greats. But also gotta agree a little with @Artimis that Madonna is not given enough credit when comparing someone like TS to her. Taylor is a juggernaut of financial investors and resources that create her music and her image, everything.

At least Madonna can dance and is a consummate performer. She created her own brand and she decided on what people to work with that helped her make her sound. Madonna is notorious for being extremely controlling. She controlled EVERYTHING! Nothing went by her that wasn’t approved by her from every aspect of her business. Furthermore, some of Madonna’s music, like Vogue, was somewhat ground breaking in that she used house/trans music and made it consumable to a mass audience.

      • magnoliarose says:

Hahaha! Nope. Enjoy her for what she is but stop. She and Katy Perry are the same.

  34. Emily says:

She’s definitely befitting from fans purchasing multiple copies. I bought both magazines because they each have different content and pictures. It’s an incredibly smart move is album sales is the goal, but it must be hard for younger fans to afford. And, who really listens to CDs anymore? I may end up having to buy a digital copy or the vinyl (4 sales from one person! Marketing genius).

  35. LucyHoneychurch says:

I honestly really like it. Are You Ready For It, I Did Something Bad, Don’t Blame Me, So It Goes, Getaway Car, Call It What You Want, and New Year’s Eve are all really good song and potential hits.

Aside from Are You Ready For It, it surprises me a bit that they chose to release some of the weaker songs (especially Look What You Made Me Do – it’s definitely not one of the stronger songs, although the video did put a fun TIC spin on it that I appreicated) as the first singles.

I actually really like Gorgeous too but imho it’s more of a fun filler song and a guilty pleasure than a radio hit.

  36. Madly says:

Super fans are buying multiple copies. This means sale numbers are doomed to crash soon.

    • cool girl says:

In 2-3 weeks numbers will be low.

    • hilariouso says:

Buying multiple copies, refreshing videos over and over, repost repost repost – gotta say, Darth Becky is an evil marketing genius bc she knows how highkey chump her fans are to do anything for her. She’s makin’ bank bc of the dumbness of her superfans, and I gotta give her credit for that!

      • cool girl says:

Its rather her team, not her. I saw her speaking – she isn’t genius. On this album she isn’t even only songwriter – she write them with few people. And her poems and magazine? I bet there is a lot of gostwriting in miss Snake career.

      • Marianne says:

She used to do a lot of writing earlier in her career, but not so much anymore. Which probably explains the quality of songs from this album. Its going to be hard to be amazing when you have like 7 different writers trying write one song. But, at the same time I cant blame her for not doing much of the wotk anymore cause its paying off.

      • Cranberry says:

I’m sorry but she’s always had ghost writers helping her writer her songs. They prompt her and use her journal writing in the lyrics. At best TS has collaborated with musicians that helped her write and/or arrange her songs. This is very common in pop music business. Some artist have a lot to contribute and have a solid grasp of music and their own vision ie. Katy Perry lets say. While others have to have their hands held and be led along. Guess which category Taylor falls into.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

I just don’t think I could ever get that invested in any singer.

  37. GD says:

She’s been silent since they talked back to her.

    • jetlagged says:

The ACLU’s response letter was truly sublime. To weave her song and album titles into the document while also citing applicable case law was a beautiful display of intellect and snark.

      • hilariouso says:

Her fans make a case that most people are out to get her and there is an unfair amount of hate/criticism leveled at Swift.

With that said, I am dying to know what those same fans think of the ACLU calling her out.

    • m says:

My prediction – she’s never, ever going to address that, because they’re absolutely in the right about it. And the ACLU’s response to her was perfection.

  41. Ozogirl says:

I will never understand why she is so popular. Her songs are catchy, but simple. She can’t sing. Can’t dance. She’s average looking with a crap personality. I don’t get it?? What’s the x factor?

    • hilariouso says:

a holdover from the 2008 cambrian explosion of pop stars (gaga, perry, etc.)? I’ve wondered it too. we haven’t had fresh meat in a while.

    • cool girl says:

Rich Daddy bought her career. She is a PR product made by her parents and team. They invest a lot of money and connections (and her family have plenty connections) to her as a teen. And also her image – I’m a simple basic teen just like you guys. So basic teens, who wasn’t popular in school could ident with her. And she raised them by years. Now she could make the worst music and they will buy it.

    • Cranberry says:

X factor is marketability. More specifically Identity-Marketing from conception to point of purchase and beyond. As most things have come to be in US, low bar, commercially manufactured and marketed music has reigned $upreme. Just like big budget, HW studio action movies, it’s not about how good the song or script is, it’s how well the formula is executed and how much budget $$ to pay for it. It’s a formula of low bar creativity and putting the majority of an enormous budget to star power, technology, promoting and advertising to a target demographic consumer.

In TS case, her target demographic is young, school age girls who are very passionate and active on sm. Her music is accessible enough to include parents and young women widening her sales umbrella substantially, but it’s her younger fans that generate most of her sales (read more on her sales tactics up thread ).

  42. keenan says:

lmao, the only thing i feel about TS is polite indifference if not mild annoyance

that said the bitterness and insecurity in the hate comments from seemingly adults nonetheless on this site toward her is laughable and pretty sad tbh

for people who hate her with such viciousness you guys sure love to talk about her. just shows that she’s won all along

anyways, pretty subpar album imo but she will continue to blow those sales numbers, and annoy the people here . although concerning the apparently rigged sales system, it’s funny how her fans are behaving a bit like kpop fans who are known for buying in bulk to inflate sales numbers.

in more important news, i wish janelle monae could drop another “many moons” flavoured album, or florence welch could bless the world with her musical poetry since these two are pretty much the only current female artists with talent, originality and flair nowadays imo (especially after being very disappointed with halsey’s latest album)

    • Applepie says:

@Keenan, didn’t see your comment. Just said same thing! If it gets allowed!!

    • Beth says:

Seriously? I’m not bitter or insecure and full of vicious hate while making comments about a celebrity on a celebrity gossip site. It’s pretty sad that someone would scold fellow adults for commenting opinions they don’t agree with. Taylor Swift has millions of fans, but there are also plenty of us who are turned off by her egotistical attitude. I’m sure she’s not sitting alone at home, crying her eyes out because not everyone likes her

      • ell says:

i think it’s ok not to like her, think her music is terrible, and even criticising her (there’s lots to say about some of her behaviour). it’s just that some of the vitriol is just way too much imo. like, calm down, if you really feel that angry over someone you never met but didn’t actually do anything awful, maybe take a walk or something.

that sort of hatred should be exclusive to the likes of woody allen and his lot of horrendous men.

      • magnoliarose says:

Dislike and hate are not the same. Who hates Tay? They don’t like her and say so. I don’t see anyone saying they despise or loathe her. They don’t like her and are expressing their opinions.
I dislike Taylor’s image, songs and the way she handles her career. I like her love of animals and think she looks good with some extra pounds.
Hate is much too strong. I just wish Swifty would disavow the Nazis. Admittedly sometimes she is disliked for odd reasons, and she inspires strong feelings, but pop culture stars usually do. I don’t even blame her for marketing her album so that her fans buy multiples. Not my thing but I am not her demographic.

  43. Parigo says:

OT question: Tay releases her albums in the fall. The Grammys are in January. Is it like Oscar bait films that are released in November/December? Is Grammy baiting a thing and why she always releases her albums at the same time of year?

    • Jaii says:

No she won’t qualify till Grammys 2019 for reputation as a whole , she purposely releases albums just after the cut off point. However LWYMMD, and Better Man by LBT both could be nominated, and I suppose the song she did with Zayn too for the 2018.

    • Noely says:

She’s aiming for the 2019 Grammys I think. You already noticed she always releases her albums in October/November. Albums are eligible for a Grammy in 2019 if they are released between October 1st, 2017 and September 30, 2018 (the eligibilty period is the same every year)

So the eligibilty period for next year’s Grammys already ended (like Jen said, her collab with Zayn might have a chance to be nominated) but she released her album as soon as the next period started. She did the same with 1989 (it was released in 2014 but the release date was already fitting into the eligibility period for 2016 Grammys. Due to this she was able to promote the album as much as possible during the whole period and so it was no surprise that she won in the end)

She’s also ALWAYS aiming for the Grammys. When Red didn’t win she was apparently really furious. I guess she always has some two-year-masterplan which should end with a Grammy for every new album she releases.

    • Veronica says:

It probably is, but that’s one thing I’m not going to shit on her for. Ambition is hardly something I’m going to discourage in people, much less women.

  44. Applepie says:

I listened to her once one our national radio station. She had a very bad cold then sang that never ever getting back together song (see I’m not a fan). Her voice was great even with the cold. She is successful, rich and pretty. ..why the hate? She gets publicity using the same games as everyone else. I know this is a gossip site but don’t get the ‘pro only certain types of women’ vibe. It’s almost like an obsession. …😞

  45. noway says:

Why so much hate!!!! This album isn’t that bad, and her pop tunes have been kind of catchy. She’s also not totally devoid of any music talent. I’ll admit she’s not the best singer, but she does write most of her tunes and then some others. She won a CMA last week for best songwriter of the year for Better Man sung by Little Big Town. She actually went out of her way and contacted them to sing it, because she liked their harmonies, their story not hers. I actually liked her better doing country so it doesn’t surprise me people on here like the Call me What you Want performance more than the other, it’s more like her country stuff. She’s been doing that kind of performance for years, and contrary to some of your opinions she has gotten better performing.
I think she is harmless, and has done some good things. She stuck up for herself when the creep pinched her butt, maybe didn’t handle Kanye great, but still he started it and she did stand up to him, stuck up for songwriters royalties on mobile music, gives great gossip that generally doesn’t have to do with someone shoving their private parts in public or worse, and has a cat with the cutest yet pissed off face ever. Let her be if only for the cat!!!!

  46. hilariouso says:

Swift fans in the comments, I have a question I’m really curious for you guys to answer:

Do you think the ACLU was/is wrong about Taylor and the blogger?

    • ell says:

not at all. i commented as such on the thread here, a few days ago. personally i think there’s plenty taylor could be criticised for and she should be rightly called out (using feminism but refusing to be political, trying to control articles about her, and much much more). however writing about bfs/ex bfs, or resenting her to ridiculous levels bc her music isn’t of some people’s liking seems to be most common complaint, which is weird.

there is plenty of music i dislike (the 1975 are imo awful, why are coldplay so popular they literally made 1 good album at the beginning of their career, james blunt’s voice is cacophonic, halsey is generic, and i could go on forever), but i feel no need to hate them with the strength of a thousands suns. i just don’t listen to them *shrug*

  47. NYGal says:

I was listening to I heart radio on my phone yesterday just for about 30 mins and I had at least 6 pop ups promos that link to buy her albums. I have never had that occur before with any other artists album release.
She is doing many things to push sales.
Not a fan, I used to like some of her stuff…now I just turn the station…I just can’t with her.

  48. Stacy Reardon says:

Maybe I’m old or late to the party, but while I think her voice is beautiful and that she’s talented, I hate that the lyrics of “Call It What You Want” (and many of her other songs) are basically: “I’m doing better than ever…because a new guy likes me.” Maybe it’s expecting too much from someone so young, but she has a huge platform. I don’t know why she doesn’t use it to empower young women instead of continuing to go the “Twilight” route of making it seem like the pinnacle of life is when a boy likes you.

  49. Sparkle says:

That obvious lip-syncing though… So cringeworthy!
And of all the albums released this year, this is actually one of the worst I’ve listened to, and there’s been a hell of a lot of bad albums released..

    • Jules says:

Sulking Swift with the Dee Snider hair has really made me realize: she’s not an entertainer as much as she is delicious entertainment. She wrote a letter to her fans saying that her heartbreak is viewed as oversharing. She completely misses the point that there is someone else involved (ten other people in fact) who were equally part of the relationship. She doesn’t get that her targets have gotten snake emojis for years. This level of delusion is remarkable

  50. Fleur says:

I admit it…I’ve LOATHED every one of her recent radio singles (every.single.one), but I really like a lot of the tracks on the album. Had to admit it. The album doesn’t suck.

Don’t understand why she picked the only four crappy songs on the album to lead the release. The rest of it’s really quite good

    • Veronica says:

I don’t get it, either. “Look What Made Me Do” and “Gorgeous” are arguably the weakest on the album. I can get why they didn’t think songs like “Delicate” wouldn’t be radio hits, but I could see “Don’t Blame Me” doing well.

  51. Guest says:

I honestly don’t understand how any grown up person could buy that album. But whatever…

    • Electric Tuba says:

Same. These fan fights in the comment section are fun to read when I’m feeling too sane and I want to take a walk on the dark side of the loon.

  52. Electric Tuba says:

All that money and she can’t get a good wig. Sad!

  53. Tim H says:

This is one woman who should NEVER try to dance, ever ever again. How can a professional entertainer be this awkward? Her “trying to be sexy” facial expressions are repellant. I admit I haven’t listened to her album and don’t plan to. Seeing her latest look and image is enough to scare me away.

  54. DAWN says:

White artist copying Black artist. Not a new concept. Taylor basically bit off of the authenticity of Beyònce’s Lemonade and marketing strategy. 🚪Gtfo*
