How many times has Chipotle had food poisoning and hepatitis outbreaks at their restaurants? A quick look at their wikipedia page reveals that they’ve had no less than ten outbreaks, sometimes across multiple restaurants and states, of deadly viruses and bacteria including E. coli, salmonella, norovirus, hepatitis and Campylobacter jejuni. So it’s not surprising to hear that a minor celebrity, Jeremy Jordan from Supergirl, had to be hospitalized with severe food poisoning-like symptoms after eating there. Jordan Instagrammed about his hospitalization following eating at Chipotle, and to their credit Chipotle responded asking for more information.
UPDATE: Chipotle has responded to Jordan’s claims with the following statement to PEOPLE: “We are sorry to hear that Jeremy is sick and have attempted to get in touch with him directly regarding where and when he ate so we can look into this. We take all claims seriously, but at this time we can’t confirm any link to Chipotle. We are always committed to making things right for our guests and will do the same for Jeremy when we are able to reach him.”
Chipotle has come under fire from actor and singer Jeremy Jordan, who alleges the eating at the fast casual chain has sent him to the hospital.
On Thursday night, the Supergirl actor and Broadway star posted his first ever Instagram story, dedicating it to be a PSA about why people shouldn’t go to Chipotle.
“I know I’ve advocated for them in the past, but they’re terrible,” says Jordan, who looks fairly pale laying in a hospital bed and showing viewers the IV in his arm. “I, as you can see, am in the hospital and I have fluids in my arm because the food did not agree with me and I almost died.”
Chipotle has repeatedly been in the news after E. Coli outbreaks, norovirus infections, and recently footage was shown of rodents falling from the ceiling in a Dallas location.
“I just want to thank my wife for being amazing and talking me off the ledge when I was on the phone about to die and Chris Wood for holding my hair back metaphorically,” he says. “I love all of you; thank you so much. It’s been a night.”
I’ve had food poisoning about four times in my life and the norovirus once and I wouldn’t wish either on my worst enemy. My kid seems to pick up some kind of stomach flu/norovirus type illness at school every year and so I keep extra Zofran on hand to treat him. (I learned the hard way after taking him to the ER the first time.) So Chipotle needs to clean up their supply chain, their stores or both. It was only a matter of time before some celebrity somewhere caught something from them. It’s a shame because their food is decent. I’ve eaten there, but only a handful of times and after reading this account I’m questioning whether I’ll ever go there again. Yes they make everything to order, but how many times have we heard about Subway having a problem? (Twice according to Wikipedia, only once that affected customers. There have likely been more incidents, but not on the same scale as Chipotle as they’ve haven’t received widespread press.) How about Taco Bell? They’ve had some outbreaks too, but they’ve been in business since 1962 and they have 7,000 restaurants while Chipotle has 2,250 and has been around since 1993. I’m just saying the numbers are not in Chipotle’s favor.
If you’ve had food poisoning, can you look at this face and not feel sick to your stomach? That’s the face of extreme intestinal pain. I’m going to revisit this page when it’s time for my second breakfast and maybe it will help curb my snacking.
I have never eaten at Chipotle, but we’ve had some serious issues with their chain in my state. The news has reported that they’ve had to shutdown local restaurants due to this problem. I don’t know if it’s a cleanliness problem or poor food preparation but I will not eat there because I don’t feel like paying to feel like roadkill.
whenever I go to a one of those with a friend, it’s dirty. I end up passing on eating. That type of dirty usually gives you the poops. I’ve had real “think your gonna die” food poisoning where they put you on an IV and give you anti-nausea called zofran. I’m now very careful about eating out.

I’ve had food poisoning twice. Once worse than the other. It’s such a horrible experience – especially when it’s from something that you LOVED to eat. It’s a huge feeling of betrayal when that happens.
I keep forgetting to get my flu shot (I know “stomach flu” isn’t the same thing, but this reminded me of it). I usually have had one by now – our work brings a nurse in and does free shots for everyone. But last year the nurse ended up breaking a blood vessel in my arm (holy shit, that hurt) and then looked at me and laughed “wow – are you on blood thinners? You’re already bruising!”. I ended up with a GIANT bruise on my arm that lasted a good two or three weeks – from almost black to purple to blue shades. I happened to have a drs appointment shortly after and he was like “holy, what happened to your arm?” and I told him the nurse gave me a shot, and it hurt really strangely as she did it and he explained that she must have hit a vessel. So now I’m too scared to get it done at work. I don’t have another drs appointment until mid December – so I guess I’m going to go to the pharmacy to get it done by one of the pharmacists that I like. But I still feel twingey just thinking about it.
It’s strange you say that about the flu shot. I’m a pharmacist and have given 2-300 year for the last 8 or 9 years and for the first time ever that same thing happened to me while giving a shot this year. It totally freaked me out and I felt terrible for the patient.
Where I work Chipotle is the only place nearby I can make it in and out in my 30 min lunch break, so I go a few times a month. Have never had an issue. Subway, on the other hand… I will never eat at ever again.
I once had a nurse who hit a nerve when trying to put in an IV. Pain immeditely shot all the way down to my fingers and my whole hand and arm seized up. And then on top of it, she had trouble finding a vein and poked me in 6 different spots. Luckily I didnt bruise that much.
I’m no Chipotle fan or apologist but someone who’s that level of sick doesn’t usually have the wherewithal to take and post a selfie. Or maybe that’s just me.
Was just thinking the same thing. I had food poisoning once, and selfies were the last thing on my mind. I imagine if it was Chipotle, more stories will be coming out because it likely wouldn’t be an isolated incident.
Looks a lot more like an actor making a sad face for his fans than someone almost dying. Pretty silly if you ask me.
I was thinking the same. The face doesn’t scream pain to me. Rather “look at meeeeeee I am such a pooooor thiiiing”. I’m not saying he did not have a horrible experience, but his facial expressions seem a little bit.. fake?
Wasn’t he one of the cast members that were making homophobic remarks about his fans? It’s kind of weird that he’s in the hospital talking about it, instead of just waiting till he feels better.
I never eat at chipotle but if I had to, I’d be sure to take my HCl and enzyme suppliments to help kill bad bugs and for optimal digestion (yes, I am a nutritionist).
Chipotle needs to get this problem solved before the damage to their brand is irreparable.
We all like the idea of fresh food, prepared to order etc. However the more a restaurant prepares things fresh on site the potential risk increases likewise. There has to be explicit food safety procedures that are adhered to to control the risk. That’s why many fast food places receive their food already prepared in a central facility where things are controlled. Fast food workers aren’t paid much to begin with. A few mistakes can make a lot of people sick. They don’t have much if any paid time off either. This may cause someone to come in to work when they are exhibiting symptoms of food borne illness.
Never been impressed with Chipotle. Their meat is always overdone and chewy, and they are so stingy. We have local restaurants that serve much better burritos, so I will support them.

People always think they’ve gotten food poisoning from a restaurant, when it’s far more likely that sanitation or food preparation issues at home have caused an illness. Most foodborne illnesses have an incubation period of 12-24 hours, so even though people always blame the last thing they ate, it’s almost always something you ate much earlier.
I know that Chipotle has had some pretty dire foodborne illness outbreak issues (some supply-chain related, some food-preparation or sanitation related) but it’s almost impossible that he would be the only person to contract an illness from a restaurant, so unless there are other reports, it’s probably not Chipotle.
I still roll the dice and enjoy Chipotle once a week or so because it’s close to my office, they have some relatively healthy options, and by the time Friday rolls around, I deserve a break from packing lunch, lol.
I dont think Ive ever got food poisoning…but I did have this stomach bug once (it hit our whole office – I think only a few people made it in) and it was particularly nasty. Every hour I was either standing over a toilet or sitting on one. And I felt soooo weak. Couldnt even concentrate on watching TV. I honestly spent most of that day either in the bathroom or lying on the couch doing absolutely nothing.
Yeah, I just got finished with a round of stomach bug this weekend. I sat in bed and stared at the wall. My husband would come in and wave his hand in front of my face to make sure I was alive. Feeling so tired and weak that you can even focus your eyes enough do to anything is such a terrible feeling.
The chipotle food poisoning thing is scary at this point. So many people have gotten ill. I have never eaten there but now I would not eat there even if THEY paid ME. Gross!
