Jeffrey Tambor accused of sexually harassing a second woman on ‘Transparent’

Jeffrey Tambor Honored With A Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

I apologize for giving Jeffrey Tambor the benefit of the doubt. Last week, we learned that Amazon Studios was in the midst of an internal investigation regarding Jeffrey Tambor and his alleged sexual harassment of his transgender assistant. Tambor has won every award for playing a transgender woman who transitioned late in life on Amazon’s Transparent. Since his former assistant had not come forward publicly to tell her story, there were few details about what actually happened between the assistance and Tambor. Which is why I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I should have known better, because now a second woman has come forward, saying that Tambor sexually harassed her as well.

Just more than a week after Amazon opened an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Jeffrey Tambor, the Transparent star today has been accused by a transgender actress on the acclaimed series of similar behavior. Tambor, who says he can at times be “volatile and ill-tempered,” denies the claims.

Comparable to the accusations made by Tambor’s former assistant Van Barnes, Trace Lysette alleges that the actor made lewd, sexually suggestive and unwelcomed remarks to her on a number of occasions, says a statement obtained by Deadline. Tambor is also said to have physically pressed up against Lysette in a sexually aggressive manner during a break in filming, according to the actress. In her allegations, Lysette advocates for the Jill Soloway created Transparent and Amazon to “remove the problem and let the show go on.”

“This information will be added to the ongoing investigation,” an Amazon spokesperson said today of Lysette’s accusations. No official complaint about Tambor has been made by Lysette to Amazon, Deadline also has learned.

“For the past four years, I’ve had the huge privilege — and huge responsibility – of playing Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman, in a show that I know has had an enormous, positive impact on a community that has been too long dismissed and misunderstood,” Tambor said Thursday. “Now I find myself accused of behavior that any civilized person would condemn unreservedly.”

He added: “I know I haven’t always been the easiest person to work with. I can be volatile and ill-tempered, and too often I express my opinions harshly and without tact. But I have never been a predator – ever. I am deeply sorry if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being sexually aggressive or if I ever offended or hurt anyone. But the fact is, for all my flaws, I am not a predator and the idea that someone might see me in that way is more distressing than I can express.”

Deadline goes on to say that Transparent is not currently in production, and that Jill Soloway (who created the show) and Amazon are likely talking behind-the-scenes about the possibility of writing Maura (Tambor’s character) out of the show for the upcoming season (season 5). Amazon is also dealing with one mess after another with their studio executives, and I’m not sure if we should put a lot of faith in Amazon’s internal review, you know? If Jeffrey Tambor is going to be outed as a sexual predator and serial harasser, then so be it. Let’s hear all the stories. I hope all of his victims come out and speak publicly, and I will believe them. His statement is pretty garbage-y, right? Right. Ugh.

This is Trace Lysette.

Ugh. How many more of these pigs are there?

  2. Giulia says:

I believe her. The show is over though, and that’s fine.

    • Jussie says:

If they killed his character off (off-screen obviously) I think they could maybe get a season out of the family dealing with that loss. I guess the only other option would be a flashback season, but I don’t see that happening.

  3. Lucy2 says:

Amazon’s HR department must be working overtime these days. (Netflix, you deal with Materson yet?). I’m very sorry for all of the people this potentially affects.
Shallow note – Trace is beautiful.

    • Mina says:

I think Netflix was so quick to shut down House of Cards because there were so many accusations coming from that set, it was happening right under their nose. Masterson is a little more complex, since it’s a police matter. I’m surprised they’ve managed to stay quiet about it for so long though.

  4. Alix says:

#apologyfail: the word to use is “that”, not “if”.

As to having flaws — surprised the ol’ “I’m not perfect” trope wasn’t tossed in as well. As if anyone has ever been accused of being so.

  5. Mina says:

These new accusations are so hard to swallow. Its so depressing that these things are like every day activity on sets. Someone was mounting a defense of Louis CK the other day and why he had to pe punished as hard as Weinstein and Spacey when his actions were only reproachable at best (and appreciation I don’t agree with). But this is why. Unless there’s a zero policy instanted in which any sexual harassment will result in the immediate firing and shunning of these people, things won’t change.

Weinstein and Spacey need to be dealt with via the justice system and belong in jail. I don’t think, based on what I’ve read that he’s done, that Louis CK does. But all 3 men deserve to be shunned and canceled, for sure.

  6. Rose says:

I’m so sick of these bullshit statements of ‘sorry if my actions were misinterpreted’ wtaf?! All this playing with words is just doing my head in. How is there a way of ‘misinterpreting’ being rubbed up against/ pressed into? I’m so tired, it’s Friday.

  7. Talie says:

I was stunned to find that the head of development who was fired passed on Big Little Lies!! What a dumb mistake that was…

  8. Anastasia says:

Ug, I always liked him as an actor, but in the back of my mind, I wondered a few times.

I was listening to NPR this morning talking about Al Franken and Roy Moore, and I thought this is NOT a political thing. This is a MAN thing. Toxic masculinity. Institutional sexism. Societal misogyny.

  9. littlemissnaughty says:

Of course there’s a second woman. There will probably be a third. I’m getting so tired of these men basing their “apologies” on intent vs. result. Just STOP touching us randomly. Don’t ask personal questions, don’t make jokes that involve sex or body parts, DON’T BE AN ASS! It’s really really easy. It doesn’t matter whether you didn’t mean it. What is this, kindergarten???

What is missing from these statements is als “I’m not going to do that again.” Where is that? If you didn’t intend to harrass or offend anyone, you could acknowledge that whatever your intent, it happened and your actions were wrong and you won’t repeat them. That’s actually important. Because all I’m reading is wah wah wah I’m misunderstood, I didn’t mean it, woe is me. Well, nowhere do I see the willingness to do better. To actually examine one’s behavior. They’re all just sooo focused on how they are perceived as opposed how they can DO BETTER. Ugh.

Off topic, Trace is gorgeous. That’s a a stunning face.

  10. ell says:

he’s not only in transparent, he’s in the new upcoming season of arrested development as well, which is on netflix.

i love arrested development, and i had no idea this dude was so awful.

  11. Jane says:

How come men can be moody assholes – even volatile- and get away with it? Its accepted… look at christian bale and that insane rant. DavidO’Russell’s verbal abuse of lily tomlin… any woman behaving like that would be unemployable. Fck Jeffrey Tambor and all his ilk

  12. Kath says:

Trace had a substantial role on the last season of Transparent, so her talking about this is a big deal. She can’t be dismissed as an assistant or ‘disgruntled employee’ or whatever.

  13. Spike says:

Before Transparent I couldn’t stand Tambor as an actor. He seemed to always play buffoons & asshats.

But I remembered yesterday that he played a toxic, sexually harassing and possibly assaulting — fictional co-host on The Gary Sandler Show, Hank. Tangential observation of the day.
