Selena Gomez got offended by Billboard noticing her teddy bear, locked her Instagram

Selena Gomez was honored by Billboard Magazine as their woman of the year, for which they published a cover profile and interview with her and held a party in her honor. Selena was quite candid with Billboard, particularly about her on-again relationship with her first love, Justin Bieber, and her claim that she ended her relationship with The Weeknd as “best friends,” which is doubtful. Given how many times Selena and Bieber have been on and off, and how much she previously seemed ambivalent toward him after their split (I swear “Same Old Love” is about Bieber) I would expect her to be more discreet about that. It’s rather naive of her to get back with him in the first place though so I guess not.

Selena apparently took offense to the fact that the Billboard journalist noticed a huge teddy bear in her house and wrote about it. On Tuesday of this week she complained in an Instagram story about this apparent violation of her privacy, writing on top of a screenshot of that part of the article “Never will I let another human guess my words ever again. Or invite them in my home. That is so hurtful. The most ‘ridiculous’ part of that is no one knowing my heart when I say things.

Right after that she made her Instagram private, meaning she would have to approve each individual future follow request. However 130 million people were already following her, and apparently they weren’t affected at all. Selena is the most followed person on Instagram. This was despite the fact that she took a three month social media break last year. Here’s more:

People first noticed that the world’s most popular Instagram account had locked out new followers around 7 a.m. ET, when major fan account @SelenaHQ tweeted out the news. Selena’s fans reacted with shock and worry: “So Selena Gomez made her insta private. Guys am shook and happy at the same time. Like I want someone else to take that most followed title. So they can leave my baby alone. All the slander against her is just too much,” one concerned fan tweeted. Others, however, found it funny that an account followed by hundreds of millions of people was now “private.” “Selena has half of ig following her, what’s the point of putting her account on private” one wrote.

Gomez flipped the switch shortly after posting and deleting a message seemingly criticizing her Billboard “Woman of the Year” profile to her Instagram Story…

The section of the article in Gomez’s photo also uses the word “ridiculous,” which was attributed to the “Wolves” singer. Here’s that part, the article’s opening paragraph, in full: “There’s a five-foot teddy bear sprawled across the kitchen floor in Selena Gomez’s North Hollywood home. ‘I know, I know,’ says Gomez, rolling her eyes, acknowledging that the stuffed animal doesn’t quite blend with the trio of armchairs nestled in the inviting, marble-accented nook. ‘It was a gift, and at first I thought, ‘This is so ridiculous, I can’t wait until I give it away to another person.’ But Gomez, 25, hasn’t let go of it—yet.”

It’s unclear what exactly offended Gomez about that seemingly innocent description, although it appears that she feels that she was misquoted about her feelings toward the teddy bear. The situation is made even more confusing by the fact that Gomez posted her Billboard cover on Twitter and thanked the magazine last Thursday, immediately after the article was published—which would imply that she had read and approved of the article at that time. And over the weekend, after attending the Billboard Women in Music 2017 event on Saturday, she posted the magazine cover on Instagram.

Update: Less than 24 hours after the social media power move, Gomez has restored full public access to her Instagram feed, and the nation has sighed a breath of relief.

[From W Magazine]

Making her Instagram private was a hasty move that could be quite expensive for Selena. She got a $10 million contract with Coach last year based primarily on her social media influence. She’s already made her Instagram public again, it was unavailable to new followers for less than a day, but brands may think twice about working with her after this move and may worry that she’ll act hastily on social media. Maybe she’ll get a pass for this one though. As smart as she is about her career, she can be pretty dumb in love and it’s telling that she got upset by the part of the story that talked about a teddy bear. It also took her days to respond to this article. That could be due to the fact that she hadn’t read it until now, but I would bet that something recently happened in her personal life. The bear could be from Bieber, she may have had a falling out with him, and that could explain why she suddenly got upset that the Billboard article included that detail. Or maybe the bear is from Abel/The Weeknd and the Biebs got mad at Selena for keeping it.

As much as Selena’s red carpet style leaves something to be desired (she’s surely contractually obligated to wear some of those outfits), I love seeing her street style. GoFugYourself has more of Selena’s recent looks if you’re interested.

  1. Really? says:

Something’s going on with her. She seems “off” lately.

  2. kimbers says:

I get that the blonde is suppose to make her look more edgy, but she needs to properly care for her treated hair.

The teddy bear is dumb to complain about. it’s a memento. who cares if someone has a teddy? was it just something to complain about? the interviewer was invited to her home? this sounds like a self serving complaint since she failed to guard this precious beat for an in depth interview. She never had a problem hiding things before from the public???

    • Rachel says:

Whoever gave her the bear probably read her comments about it and got pissed off, so she tried to spin it as if that’s not what she said. Whatevs. I can only imagine a significant other giving a grown woman a giant teddy bear, so The Biebs?

      • Sherry says:

That’s what I’m thinking. Whoever gave her that teddy bear got pissed off by her comment in the article and she’s claiming, in effect, the journalist “misquoted” her by attaching meaning behind her words.

      • Rebecca says:

That’s what I was thinking. She either pissed off Bieber or the Weeknd.

      • African Sun says:

Yeah this, who do we think gave her the bear? I don’t see Abel giving a woman a stuffed animal teddy.

  3. Bridget says:

Selena has always seemed like stardom crushes her. And while her last album was really very good, for the most part her output is done out of an obligation to have a product to promote and be famous, vs some great artistic drive (I mean, she seems like a very nice girl but have you seen her movies?). She never seems like a happy and fulfilled person.

  4. PIa says:

I don’t get this girl’s fame, she is a mediocre singer, does not dance, not the best actress. And the social media, always saying how her privacy is invaded yet posting pics of her and Abel when they were dating.

    • courtney says:

shes less than mediocre at acting and singing. she is purely manufactured and successfully so. she is not very bright and seems like a lost kitten most of the time. she acts out goes on rants but can’t thoughtfully answer questions her team has not coached her for aka woody allen. her response to the question of working with an alleged sex predator was “the universe works in mysterious ways” utter bullshit. she is pathetic and i have no respect for her

    • Christina says:

I was just scratching my head and thinking the same thing. I mean she’s cute, but why all the publicity? I’m assuming most of her fan base if young teenagers and tweens like Beibs. I don’t think I even know a song by her I like, but I have high standards when it comes to music, movies too.

    • Savasana Lotus says:

      I don’t get it either. She’s a Dingus.

  5. Gargoyle Doyle says:

She is looking and acting so strange lately. What a pointless thing to get upset about. She seems very dramatic and attention seeking. She probably needs to play these games to keep her name in the headlines, since her music is never any good. I never understood her appeal, but she’s getting worse. I sense a breakdown in her future.

    • Really? says:

+1. And I thought the Biebs was bad. Now I’m not sure who is worse.

    • Sarah says:

I thought they wrote something awful but teddy bear? Really? LOL. She probably just want to be in the headlines.

    • Savasana Lotus says:

I haven’t heard much of her music. Who listens to her? The only thing I know about her is she’s a drug addict who killed a kidney. Why does she have 9,000 lives when so many without talent are brushed aside and especially if they are druggies. It’s like a Kardashian thing. Celebrated for nothing.

  6. Mina says:

What? I hope it wasn’t just because of a Teddy Bear. When you invite a journalist for an interview in your home, they are going to observe and write about it, because it helps build a better profile. I found nothing wrong with that line in the article. She’s been in the business long enough to understand that a journalist is taking notes from the moment they shake your hand until they leave.

    • Wren says:

It’s….. odd. After reading the paragraph I can’t understand what she’d be so upset about. From the headline I thought they found her childhood teddy and made a big deal about that like she still sleeps with it or something. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but it would be a degree of privacy invasion that I would understand. But then it ended up being just some giant stuffed bear in her kitchen?? Like, did she think that would pass unnoticed?

  7. JA says:

You guys, she just wants to live a normal life and remain private!!! Remember that interview when she waxed poetic about being off social media for 3 months and was so enlightened and just wanted to live a simple life!!!!!!!?? Yea she probably forgot about that too so she continues to pose, post and speak about her private life to anyone who will listen! How dare someone talk about her teddy bear! Don’t they know she had a kidney transplant, can’t she just LIVE!!?

  8. Aren says:

I wish a young person could explain to me why she is so Instagram-popular. I would’ve thought somebody like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, or the Jenner girls could attract more people.
Selena can’t sing, dance or act, and even if I think she’s super pretty, she’s not really stunning.
    I just don’t get it…

    • Snowflake says:

      I don’t get it either

    • Wren says:

I too am confused. At first I thought it was because of Bieber, but then I thought he had fallen out of favor with the youth. Maybe because she’s a former Disney actress and people love her for that? Oh well, perhaps this is just one of life’s great mysteries.

    • diana says:

I’ve read somewhere that she bought millions of followers. I can look it up but I’m not sure I care that much. Meh…

  9. Talie says:

If I gave someone who nearly died a big bear and they made a joke about it, I would let it go. I’d be happier the person was alive.

  10. Svea says:

Yaass. This. Oh I get it. Some things are private. My bear is. LOL.

  11. Sky says:

She invited this journalist into her home and took them into the kitchen where she has a 5 foot tall teddy bear and she’s mad because they mentioned it in the article? What am I missing here.

Fact is if she didn’t want the teddy bear to be mentioned she should have put the teddy bear in a room out of sight. She knows what these interviews are like this is not her first time to the rodeo.

  12. Laura says:

Health issues aside, I feel like living in her head would be extremely exhausting.

  13. Case says:

Selena Gomez has always struck me as very troubled — I feel like every time she’s in the news, she’s dealing with some weird inner turmoil.

  14. kim says:

I’m sure it was more to do with the criticisms she was receiving for defending rapist woody Allen in that interview.
