Jessica Chastain in Zuhair Murad at UK ‘Molly’s Game’ premiere: ridiculous?

Jessica Chastain has been in Europe all week, doing press and photocalls for her latest film, Molly’s Game. Chastain just received a Critics Choice nomination for Best Actress, and I think when all is said and done, she’s got a decent enough shot for Oscar nomination. The buzz around the film is mid-level, but Chastain’s performance is being praised and if the film is going to score any big noms, it will probably be for Chastain. As always, it comes down to buzz and the ability to get people talking about your film.

Which brings me to these photos of Wednesday night’s premiere. For the most part, Chastain has been wearing low-key, flattering looks from Prada and Ralph Lauren during her promotional stops. And then at her first big premiere, she wore this Zuhair Murad Couture dress which, frankly, looks like a costume. When I first saw the photos, my tired eyes were like “is it Oktoberfest or something?” This is awful. It looks awful on her. But maybe that’s the point: people weren’t talking about her when she wore simple, chic little black dresses. She had to wear something hideous to get people to talk about her movie.

I’m also including photos of Jason Isaacs and Idris Elba, both of whem attended the premiere. Isaacs isn’t even in the movie, I checked! Idris is in there though. Who would you rather? Both are looking really great these days.

Jason Isaacs is a good looking man. Very good in the OA as well.

  2. Giddy says:

That dress has engulfed her. And, Idris, Idris, Idris. We watched Luther on Netflix and our son asked if it was any good. My husband replied that he liked it and that I watched it so I could gaze at Idris. It’s true.

    • Galaxias says:

Why can’t someone like the show AND gaze at Idris? 😉

I happen to love the show itself, but also enjoy the wonderful eye candy. It’s the best of both worlds. And Ruth Wilson as Alice will always be a favorite of mine, so there’s that lovely bonus.

  3. minx says:

    Oh dear.

  4. anna says:

ah, idris. he’ll always be stringer bell to me.

  5. smcollins says:

I’m going to ignore the not-really-that-awful-but-awful dress (Jessica deserves better) and focus my attention on Idris and Jason. Mmmmmmm….lovely start to my day.

  6. SM says:

Whoever convinced her to put this on needs to go to the WH and convince the Donald to resign. Those are some superb skill

  7. YeahRight says:

    This dress overwhelms her.
I feel like Aishwarya Rai could pull it off though!

  8. Becks says:

oh that dress is awful. If the top was more fitted, with the big skirt, or vice versa – it swallows her whole and is just an awful mess. Looking at the actual dress the design looks pretty, but the overall look is just awful.

    • LokiGal says:

totally agree, i feel like either the sleeves should go or , my personal preference keep the top half, get a contrasting belt and get the skirt to be slim and drapey instead of poooouuffy.

    • minx says:

It makes her look two yards wide.

    • Ankhel says:

It’s such a beginner’s mistake! You can have lots of volume on your upper body, or your lower body, but not both at the same time.
Just making it sleeveless would’ve improved this dress so much.

Jessica rarely dresses well for her figure. She’s so pretty, it’s a pity.

    • lucy2 says:

I thought the same, the detailing is kind of pretty, but yikes, the structure of the dress is so huge and oddly proportioned.

    • KiddVicious says:

Exactly. I like the idea of the dress, and I love the flowers, there just too much material for her small frame. A fitted top would look so much better. I love the full skirt.

    • Tessy says:

It looks like a Christmas tree skirt.

  9. seraph7 says:

Usually love Zuhair Murad, but that dress is doing her no favours. It’s a weird cut.
The actual pattern is quire pretty.

  10. Pumpkin (formally soup, pie) says:

I don’t hate the dress, I like the pattern, colors, belt, but it looks to me that is has too much fabric.

  11. lightpurple says:

Idris. How is this a question.

The fabric of that dress is gorgeous and color should work on her but the fabric looks really stiff and it doesn’t fit her any where and what’s with the bat wing sleeves? Beautiful woman. Beautiful fabric. Terrible design turns both into a mess.

I’m just going to look at idris.

And if her performance in Molly’s Game is on par with her performance in Ms. Sloane, than she deserves a nomination. She deserved one for Ms. Sloane.

    Back to Idris

  12. starkiller says:

I think the dress would be a hundred times better without the weird batwing sleeves. Something other than those dyed-to-match bridesmaid shoes would greatly help, too.

(possibly minor spoiler for The OA) I just finished watching The OA literally yesterday and I can’t really look at Jason Isaacs right now. He’s very, very good in the show but man, he plays a really repugnant character.

    • Nanny to the Rescue says:

Oooh, The OA. I hated myself when I realized I’m rooting for the evil guy. And I have so many theories about Riz Ahmed’s character. Season 2 cannot come soon enough!

  13. Genevieve says:

It’s a 1950s skirt with an early-1980s top, and it’s not good. If the top and just-below the belt parts were better fitted, streamlined, it would be fab.

  14. Cami says:

Horrid dress! Did she look in the mirror b4 she walked out of her hotel suite! Why are so many beautiful women being put in ugly dresses!

    • boredblond says:

If they can make a beautiful woman look this bad, imagine how hortible we mere mortals would look? hehe

  15. Redgrl says:

I think th pattern is actually pretty, but the cut is ridiculous. It may have worked with sleeker, slimmer lines…

  16. Anna says:

    I love it!

    (And Isaacs, aaaaaall the way)

    • broodytrudy says:

I love it, too! Much better than the boring deep vs she always wears. Glad she’s stepping out of the box!

    • Laura says:

I also love it! I would only change th color to not nude, but I love the shape and the details of the fabric.

  17. Valiantly Varnished says:

Well I have no problem being the only one who thinks the dress is gorgeous, it’s just not for her because she’s so small. But the dress itself is beautiful

  18. KiddVicious says:

    Idris, of course.

  19. Lylia says:

The dress is pretty and crazy at the same time. I love it. Jessica loves it too. She is like this thing is so crazy I am going with it, lol. You can see she is having fun.

Kaiser, don’t make me choose. Jason is a long time forever for me. Idris Elba is just perfection. I can’t pick so I will take both. 🙂 If I am forced too I will choose Jason because I love a man with a great sense of humor.

  20. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch says:

Idris looks so great. He dresses and presents himself so well. I like Isaacs too, but I wonder if he didn’t realize that he would be photographed for this event. His outfit is a mess. As to Chastain’s dress? I agree that actresses need to work harder to promote their films as well as their careers. Women need all of the professional attention and press they can get. Nicole Kidman is well known for wearing crazy outfits to get more attention for her smaller films. I just hope that someday a woman can show up dressed in a crumpled suit with messy hair and no makeup and still have a career the next week.

  21. Heat says:

    Idris first, Jason second.

The skirt is too stiff! If it draped, it would be really pretty.

Molly’s Game is great, and Jess and Idris are both excellent. Can’t wait for more people to see it.

  22. Mommy2b says:

A “who would you rather” post about women would be considered sexist, no?
