Rachel Brosnahan won best actress in a TV Musical/Comedy, so many new shows to watch

This is a post reserved to all the actresses nominated for best actress in the Television Series – Musical or Comedy Musical category with whom I was woefully unfamiliar prior to last night’s Globes. (I need to read more industry sources, I should add that to my list of resolutions.) Anyway first off is Rachel Brosnahan, in Vionnet. I like how classic and simple this gown is. She won Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Rachel was very cute in her speech, and said hi to Oprah, whom she spotted from the stage. This was even before Oprah’s watershed speech on the movement, which brought the house and the whole Internet down. Oprah 2020! I don’t watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel yet but I’m about to.

The show also won for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Did you see creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s speech? That was cool as hell and she owned that stage. Here’s her speech in case you missed it. She referenced her Spanx, thanked Amazon for the fact that their checks cleared and called Rachel Brosnahan a “half human, half Tolkien character!” Plus she was wearing a top hat with feathers, a ruffled mullet skirt and an enviable velvet jacket over it. I’m watching this woman’s show this week.

Also nominated in Brosnahan’s category was Pamela Adlon, for Better Things on FX. I haven’t seen that either but Adlon co-wrote that show with Louis CK. It’s going to continue without him. The President of FX, John Landgraf, has saidIt’s Pamela’s show. These are her stories, this is her life. She’s the creative engine of that show & that won’t change.” Good. She was in Laura Basci Couture in a cool tuxedo jacket over a low cut sequin top and a long skirt.

Frankie Shaw stars on SMILF, on Showtime. I’ve heard so many good things about that show. She looks really familiar to me and that’s because I’ve seen her on Mr. Robot. She was in J. Mendel, in a gown with a bustier that is giving me 90s vibes.

So now there are three new shows I can watch! I’m not going to sit there mindlessly scrolling through Netflix and browsing “best of” lists for a while. (Like a week maybe.) Ooh and in terms of the other nominees, I already saw GLOW and loved it (I covered Alison Brie here) and Kaiser covered Issa Rae, but that reminds me to watch Insecure too!

She looks like Evan Rachel Wood

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a WONDERFUL show! A must watch!!!

    • Reef says:

The set designs and costumes alone are enough. It’s amazing to look at.

    • lucy2 says:

I binged it all this weekend and really liked it. Visually it’s great, and Rachel is amazing.

    • booRadley says:

just came to agree, I started bingeing it this weekend, although it has been on my list before it was even released. Love love love Rachel, she is so perfect in this role. Funny, well written, really well timed show.

I just binged it over the holidays, too, and loved it. I wish there were twice as many episodes! I’m already ready for a rewatch.

I don’t think the show is good at all and I’m shocked that it’s got any awards. I watched the entire season hoping it would get better. I wanted to like it. I wanted it to be good. But the writing is horrible and shallow. The show is not funny. And the writer/director/creator’s speech last night showed why – she’s not funny and she seems like a real a-hole if you ask me. The show sucks – it’s a case of the Emperor’s New Clothes.

I love MMM wasnt sure it would win but I’m glad it did. It was between them and blackish for me that has delivered this season.

  4. JA says:

The marvelous is a good show but as with alot of Amy’s shows a bit problematic when it comes to diversity and her female protagonist ALWAYS seem repetitive from the last. That said, I was a fan of Gilmore girls so gave marvelous a chance.

A friend of mine had a role (small, but speaking) on an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. He’s been raving about how wonderful it is for a long time. I’ve never seen it, other than the scene he’s in – I don’t have Amazon Prime. Nice to see that it was recognized. I figured the main reason he loved it was because he worked on it. 😉

  6. Olivew says:

Amy Sherman-Palladino is awesome and as a huge Gilmore Girls fan, I consider this award long overdue for her. Love her quick wit and pop culture references

  7. Neha says:

I’m still too angry at ASP for that disaster of a Gilmore Girls revival that she gave us, but I do want to watch her show! I do think her shows are sometimes very problematic, especially when they come to racial diversity and body-shaming.

As for SMILF, I binge watched the show recently! I liked it enough to watch the whole things and I thought they did some things really well (show a skinny woman having a binge eating disorder, show an overweight black woman be sexual and confident, the effects of abuse, depression and bipolar), but it felt like the show lacked focus and there were some things that made me uncomfortable (like Frankie having sex with a college student she used to nanny and whose siblings she still does).

    • Jann says:

Body shaming? I never saw that on her works that I followed. Sookie was pretty much the only character played by Melissa Mccarthy that had zero comments on her weight. Bunheads also had a character of a young ballerina that was considered bigger than all the others, and throughout the whole show she was encouraged and considered just as good as the others.
Maybe there are examples that I didn’t notice, but from what I’ve seen, I don’t see that problem.

      • tealily says:

I’m sure Neha his referring to A Year in the Life, which had that awful moment with Pat at the pool, but that’s the only instance of body shaming in her material that I can think of.

  8. Savasana Lotus says:

I binged every moment of Marvelous Maisel. So different. So entertaining. She’s a real force.

  9. Karen says:

    A fabulous show! Great acting,.

  10. Oh hi says:

I don’t love winking dialogue, so never really connected with Gilmore Girls or Buffy or anything Aaron Sorkin has ever done. But, I really loved MMM. Something about that witty banter set in front in a frothy period piece works. Picture His Girl Friday with a splash of Catskill delivery.

  11. Neelyo says:

I knew she’d win because the lead actress in a new TV show usually wins a GG the show’s debut year (see JANE THE VIRGIN, MY SO CALLED LIFE, ALIAS, CRAZY EX-BOYFRIEND, etc.).

Not to say she’s not deserving because she is, but this was not an upset if you follow the Globes.

  12. sun says:

and she’s married to Quentin from The Magicians

    cute couple

  13. lucy2 says:

The whole time I watched, I’ve been trying to figure out who Rachel reminds me of. I think it’s a little bit Lizzy Caplan in MOS, and a little bit Alexis Bledel, which is funny because ASP seems to cast women who look a lot alike (Sutton Foster and Lauren Graham, Sasha on Bunheads looked like Rory from GG). Anyway, I really enjoyed MMM.

I LOVE Better Things and Pamela, and I’m really glad they are able to cut LCK out and keep the show. I know he was involved in a lot of the writing, but it so is HER show, and she’s amazing in it, as are the actresses who play her daughters.

SMILF is also interesting. Lots of great shows for women, created by women right now. I love it.

  14. MarcelMarcel says:

I binged SMILF and I adore. It’s definitely a black comedy. I felt it had the right balance of lighter punch lines and portraying the hardships experienced by the characters. I recommend it if you want to see a show that features a dynamic cast of women and showcases the reality of being workclass.

  15. Lorelai says:

Love all three of these shows! Great to see such deserving ladies recognized!

  16. Call_Me_Al says:

Was MMM in house of cards? I watched the pilot and was like, meh.

  17. HoustonGrl says:

I enjoyed the MMM. I thought Brosnahan overacts a bit in the show, bordering on irritating, but she clearly put an enormous amount of effort into a very difficult part and at the end of the day, she pulled it off. I’m looking forward to season 2, it’s really fun and visually stunning.

  18. Winechampion says:

I think I must be the only one who doesn’t like MMM. Her “sets” are painful, and the character is irritating. She measures her body parts every day? Is that supposed to be quirky and endearing? I also agree with the body-shaming comment above. The stupid and offensive thing in the pilot episode about her “fat” roommate almost made me turn it off right then.

  19. Amelie says:

I just realized why Rachel Brosnahan looks vaguely familiar, she played Rachel Posner (?), the prostitute Doug Stamper, Frank Underwood’s right hand man, becomes obsessed with in House of Cards! I liked her character on that show, will have to give MMM a try.
