At long last, Marvel is finally doing a stand-alone Black Widow movie. I agree with Sarah, it will seem pointless after Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow comes out. [LaineyGossip]

eh Black Widow was always the least interesting Avenger. And Scarlett just doesn’t do anything for me. I know a lot of people wanted it but I probably wont see it, And I love Marvel movies

    • oliphant says:

yes ITA, i think with the right actress the black widow character could have really worked, however Scarlett is so flat and boring in the role- weird as most of the casting in the marvel movies has been pretty inspired, as has the choice of directors. Someone like ruth wilson would have brought an edge to the character sadly lacking.

      • Lexie says:

+1 for Ruth Wilson. She’s my dream lead for basically everything.

      • zuzusgirl says:

ScarJo is like watching cardboard white listening to one note drone on and on. I feel about her the same way I feel about Natalie Portman and Gwyneth Paltrow. All one note.

      • Lalala says:

Emily Blunt was originally cast as Black Widow, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with Young Victoria. Imagine how much better BW would have been with Emily Blunt in the role! What could have been…

    • BorderMollie says:

It’s funny, I actually think her completely one note acting works really well for Black Widow’s character. It’s the only thing I’ve ever liked her in, but in 3 or 4 years superhero movies may very well be on the way out, so yeah it’s way too late.

    • kimbers says:

the difference between black widow and WW is ScarJo is a terrible actress. I get they want to jump on the women in movies era, but couldn’t they do it with someone who can act?

      • Xi Tang says:

Oh please gal is even worse than Scarlett in the acting department.
As for the standalone movie, it’s a bit too late now. Weird decision by marvel.

      • Jag says:

Exactly! If she could act and not just be eye candy, then the movie could work – yes, even after JLaw’s movie. (Which I won’t be seeing either, because I don’t think that she can act.)

  2. Chef Grace says:

Does anyone even care if we have a Black Widow movie?
I am looking forward to seeing Black Panther and maybe the next Avenger movie. And another Spiderman. Just feels like Marvel is getting greedy.

    • V4Real says:

I think a lot of people don’t care. Maybe a few years ago it would have made a bigger impact. At this point I don’t think Scarjo cares except for the paycheck. I’m pretty sure they’re going to have to throw Hawkeye in there, the fans seem to like him a lot, the character, not the actor.

      • SM says:

But everyone was so happy for WW because it was a superhero movie with a woman in the lead. I think if done right and Marvel usually finds a way to make their products work, another woman superhero could be a very possitive thing. Now the question of whether SJ should be the lead is a different question entirely. I thik the last few years were not the best for SJ as someone carrying a big film. On the other hand before Thor Ragnarok came out most people did not care for Thor much as a superhero lead. So again, if they do this right, I believe it may be good.

There are so many interesting female characters in Marvel comics.
And after years of movie after movie about white guys, I would love to see more of women get their own movie. Much more than I would like another Spiderman movie or another Iron Man movie. Black Widow can work. There are a lot of interesting stories about her in comics.

I would love to see a Ms Marvel movie. A Muslim girl living in and often saving New Jersey would be great. And it has a fun supporting cast as well. Can definitely recommend that comic.

  3. Mia4s says:

Nice try guys, but way too late to be remotely interested. You had your shot to set the stage and break ground for women superheroes and you blew it. Wonder Women gets that honour and all the credit. Let this be a lesson to other studios dragging their heels.

Honestly I’ve always shrugged at the idea of a Black Widow movie. Mysterious spy lady who is good at martial arts? I’ve seen that movie…about ten versions. Wonder Women was an actual super hero with superpowers. Black Widow has been a sidekick at best.

Oh well, hopefully Captain Marvel doesn’t suck.

    • Bee says:

Mysterious spy lady who is good at martial arts, you say? Watch Atomic Blonde and you’re done.

    • Tania says:

I agree with this. They had the chance to be truly groundbreaking but instead waited. I feel like the character isn’t charismatic, I don’t really care to know her, so that movie would need to be really compelling. My hubby was saying they should make it like a Jason Bourne movie, more spy than Marvel. I think that might be interesting.

      • Jake Kirby says:

What they need is my script, “Budapest”

love triangle between Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Magneto hunting Nazis.
NO US locations. Show us Geneva, Algiers, Beirut.
Make it more Noire, more spy, less super-hero.

I don’t want it easy to tell who’s right and who’s wrong — make it morally ambiguous.

        Get Ridley Scott to direct.
Bring in John Cusack to reprise his role in Gross Pointe Blank.
Keep us guessing until the end.

  6. m0lle says:

I wonder what Marvel ‘Phase 3’ will look like…..and I wonder if box office fatigue will Ever set in for superhero movies.

  7. Ginger says:

If the team that did John Wick and Atomic Blonde handle this project, it could be epic.

    • browniecakes says:

Just announced, a John Wick inspired show called The Continental on STARZ by the John Wick creators. I’ve been crushing on Keanu lately

      • Bee says:

I’m here for anything from the John Wick universe. May I suggest they add Adam Driver as a Keanu clone gone slightly “wrong”. That would be my dream movie LOL!

  8. trollontheloose says:

why does 45 lie about everything? The building was sold before Obama was in the office. The report for the sale cites security flaws. The sale of the old embassy paid for the new one. Can this waste of human be honest for once instead of dumping one lie after another?

  9. seesittellsit says:

My favorite Black Widow scene is the one in The Avengers where Loki calls her a “mewling quim”. I kind of gasped but I looked around and I realized that no one else in the theater knew the word and were looking puzzled. Well, I no longer live in a sophisticated urban milieu – the friend I was with, who grew up in an isolated area near here, whispered, “Does that mean what I think it does?” Yes, I said, and we got hysterical.

Apropos of nothing, as it were.

  10. Naptime says:

    She’s so boring. Who cares

  11. River Song says:

Am I the only one who finds the Natasha character great in Winter Soldier & Civil War – but really meh in the Avengers movies ?

  12. Miss M says:

The only reason I will watch the black widow rip off aka red sparrow is Matthias!
Yes, I will watch a stand alone black widow movie.

  13. Bee says:

Try as they might, she ain’t Wonder Woman. Painful to say but the all the female Avengers are terrible and should be made missing in action. Solid pass.

    • flan says:

Read the comics. There are lots of interesting female Avengers.

The only reason we don’t like them as much in some of the movies, is because they were badly written there and because there are so few of them perhaps.

    • Jordan says:

I know you’re not taking a swing at the beloved X-Men ladies who are also avengers.

  14. Ash says:

Loved Atomic Blonde. CT was unreal stunning in that movie. The clothes were amazing. I couldn’t stop staring at her face!
Saw Katy Perry last night in concert. I HATE the hair but she looked gorgeous, I dunno it really highlighted her features and she looked beautiful. She really is entertaining. Tons of energy!😩

  15. anon says:

why do you guys have to bring Wonder Woman into this? That’s done, it happened. Ok, Marvel blew their chance to bring us the first super hero film lead by a woman but does that mean that we don’t need more women super heroes?

  16. KatC says:

Add me to the chorus. I know it makes me a bit of a bad feminist, but I have never wanted a Black Widow movie. Every other article at The Mary Sue tried to convince me, but ScarJo is an absolutely abysmal actress and that character has nothing going for it. I don’t even like seeing her alongside the other Avengers in their movies. I can’t imagine hinging an entire film on her non-expressions. I would much rather they made a movie about the kick ass super spy from the same Russian agency that Peggy fought in the Agent Carter series. Bridget Regan (thanks IMDB!)

  17. marianne says:

I dont think its necessarily pointless. We dont know what the focus of this film will be. We dont even know if Red Sparrow will be good or not. I for one, am excited to see more female driven films one way or another. And at least (since she doesnt have any superpowers) it will be grounded in a bit more realism which I think will be a bit refreshing with all the superhero/comic book movies being released.
