Ann Curry: Verbal sexual harassment was ‘pervasive’ at NBC & ‘Today’

Amber Rose at Chocolate Lounge

As much as I want to see Ann Curry get drunk and spill #AllTheTea on Matt Lauer and NBC, I know she won’t. She’s too classy and too dignified. Ann is promoting her new PBS docu-series We’ll Meet Again, and this promotion has come at an opportune moment, with Matt Lauer finally being outed as a serial sexual harasser, predator and abuser late last year. Lauer was the one who got Ann fired and you know she has a lot of feelings towards Lauer and that whole situation. But she’s not giving those feelings away. She basically got the cover of this week’s People Magazine to talk about how she’s not out here, holding grudges.

Being fired from the ‘Today Show’ because of Lauer: “It hurt like hell. It hurt so much, but I learned a lot about myself. I can say I’ve done nothing wrong. I’ve been honest and true. I’ve tried to stay pure. I’ve tried to not respond in a knee-jerk manner, and I’ve stayed very close to who I am. So it hurt, but I’m also proud of myself.”

Why she stayed quiet after leaving Today: “Experience has taught me, as a journalist, the No. 1 thing you have to be is humble. It’s not about you.”

Lingering resentments? “I’m not going to say it wasn’t hard. But I had to let go. And I learned that when you not only let go but open your arms wide and learn the lessons that an experience — no matter how bad — can teach you, that’s when you rise. I can say today I’m stronger now. I’m smarter. I’m happier, as happy as I’ve ever been. And my compassion has only grown. When you go through the pain and learn the lessons, you will be changed for the better.”

Sexism in the workplace: “Most of the men I’ve worked with have been exemplary,” she says, but adds that she hopes sweeping change will soon help those who have endured harassment and abuse for too long. “I feel real hope that change is coming. That our daughters are not going to have to face what the majority of women in this country who’ve entered the workplace have had to face.”

[From People]

“I can say I’ve done nothing wrong” – word. She did nothing wrong. Was she the best co-host/co-anchor in the world? No, but she was held to a really strange and f–ked up standard, and let’s not pretend that her job would have been a million times easier if Matt Lauer hadn’t been gunning for her. She handled all of this with grace.

Ann also appeared on CBS’s This Morning show today and she hinted about how much she knew about Lauer, and how she was not surprised about any of the sh-t that went down at NBC. She says that yes, when she was at Today, sexual harassment was “pervasive.”

    Class act all the way!

Yes. She may not have been suited to be anchor, but she was so sincere, genuine and classy. And on a superficial note she looks absolutely fantastic and natural. Being gracious really does shine through! Go Ann!

This is really random and off topic but my brother lists Ann Curry as one of his top celebrity crushes. Somewhere along the line, Meg Ryan was dethroned by Ann on his list. I love that my brother crushes on Ann.

  3. Nicole says:

Ann Curry will always be an example of class even when the world tries to screw you. She’s still the reason I don’t watch today

I really wish this conversation would also include more of the harassers, and not just the abusers. The vast majority of these cases in the public are criminal. Rape and abuse has been hard to prosecute forever, and it needs to be changed, but there is another issue that an even larger majority of women have been affected and it is harassment. I can’t think of a woman who hasn’t been belittled in some way in her career for being a woman, generally by words and/or actions in not seeing a woman able to do this type of work because she is a woman. This dismisses and hurts all, and even though the criminal cases are important I wish we would discuss this too.

I know I’m likely to get dragged for this but I don’t think Curry was ever suited as an anchor. As a foreign correspondent she was ideal and she has the chops as a 1st rate correspondent . The same could be said for Chistine Amnapore they’re not built for fluff. There’s plenty to blame Lauer for but her failure in this role is not one IMHO…..

    • Tiffany says:

But she did nothing wrong. She came in to work and from all accounts was pleasant and professional to those around her. There is not history of abuse or harassment. She might not have been at her best for the fluff, but she came in and did her gig. She did nothing wrong.

      • Anniefannie says:

In a high profile position where job security is dependent on Q ratings and advertiser dollars, doing nothing wrong isn’t going to cut it. I found her interviews to be squirm worthy ( Brad Pitt, oy!) and this is coming from someone who was cheering for her….

      • Tiffany says:

Ratings did not improve after she left and Lauer was top dog. In fact GMA was on the incline and them CBS was gaining a ton of traction as well. Ratings for TDS have improved with Lauer gone and the increase has been steady sooooooo……

Oh, and everyone still harps on that interview. It must not have been to problematic because Ann was he and Angelina’s go to when they had things to promote. Angelina had to promote Unbroken (which was a NBC/Universal property) and she used her clout to make sure that Lauer was nowhere near that interview (Roker got final approval).

I agree with one caveat: I think she was wrong for the choice of anchor on NBC, and perhaps most all of network news tv. She wasn’t bubbly or extroverted or particularly charismatic in the way most anchors are. She seemed like a scholar. She would’ve been ideal as an anchor for PBS, the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, or perhaps 60 Minutes (although 60 Minutes is such a freaking boys club). She’s such a class act and an intellectual, I think PBS was the right spot for her all along.

  6. Nev says:

    Yayyyy Anne. Keep rising.

  7. Lizzie says:

“I can say I’ve done nothing wrong” is so freeing. i was taught this is why you always let the truth be known, even if i is unpopular. if you tell the truth and do the right thing – even if others get away with bad behavior – you can always rest easier. and – those who didn’t usually get their comeuppance.

  8. stinky says:

… she looks good in white too, nice choice – vindication!

  9. Louise says:

Hoda seemed a bit off with her.

  10. smee says:

Can you believe she’s 61 years old?! She looks incredible.

IDK – I sure as hell would want to gloat about ML going down – she’s a better person than I am. Hope she did the happy dance at home when she heard of his demise!

  11. jferber says:

I want her career to flourish, now, finally. She was the wrong one to be punished/censored in her battle with Lauer. Let Lauer forever be silenced and let Curry start working like crazy and show us all she has to show and give to the world.

  12. Betsy says:

I didn’t particularly care for her as an anchor, but I like her in other venues and she’s clearly a class act.

  13. Jeannie says:

I love her so much. Her Twitter tagline is everything, “Journalism is an act of faith in the future.”

  14. HoustonGrl says:

    *standing ovation*

  15. Kate says:

    Gorgeous.

  16. Megan says:

Wow – I just love her! Just think – all those years ago if Lauer had been fired instead of her, maybe their ratings would have improved then, as they have now.

As far as her comment about journalists need to be humble….if only the journalists today would follow that lesson.

Again – I love her! Glad she will be back on TV.

  17. adastraperaspera says:

Ah, Ann Curry is like a palate cleansing sorbet!

  18. Helen Smith says:

I wish Ann had gone farther in naming names and behavior. She was hedging too much in this interview.
