Kristen Bell in J. Mendel at the SAG Awards: forgettable or striking?

Kristen Bell was the first ever host at last night’s SAG Awards, and she had to deliver a lot of mediocre lines that just weren’t funny or impactful. I like Kristen, she’s a go-getter and she’s hosted the Independent Spirit Awards masterfully, but she wasn’t given good material. She had a lot of costume changes last night, some were beautiful, but we’re just going to talk about her red carpet dress, this deep pink J. Mendel with a floral overlay which was fitted down to her bottom. There was definitely something off about the fit and cut of this gown, like it should be higher on the bust and hips and more traditionally cut. The clustering of the embroidery was also bizarre, like she’d been attacked by a sewing machine from the waist up. If you’d like to see Kristen’s opening monologue, Just Jared has a clip here.

Laura Linney was also in J. Mendel, in a full coverage pepto pink gown with a cape. Like Bell’s dress this was just bizarre. I feel like I’ve seen this sequin pattern before, it’s clearly a leaf but it looks more like something you would see wriggling under a microscope. It’s like somewhat was trying to put a modern art take on a very staid dress and I dislike it. Linney was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, for her work in Ozark. That went to Claire Foy for The Crown.

Madeline Brewer of The Handmaid’s Tale was in a solid color blush gown with a bunch of pearl-like balls stuck on it. This princess gown is Reem Acra. I see what she was going for with her crimson shoes and matching lips, but I don’t like her styling at all. The slicked back hair does not go with this look. She was gorgeous at the Critics Choice Awards but this is a miss for her.

Sequins were big last night, as were retro silhouettes. Connie Britton’s aggressively pink Elisabetta Franchi gown combined both in one fug package. It had shoulder pads, the color was awful, and the fit was very “loose disco dress.”

Laura Linney’s dress is like the Lord and Taylor version of Gwenyth’s white Tom Ford.

  2. Lucy2 says:

I don’t care for the others, but I think Kristen‘s looks fine. I’m not seeing any of the problems mentioned with it, and I’m usually someone whining that the strapless dresses look too low.

    • minx says:

Same, I think the fit is fine.

    • Lizzie says:

she looks great. sometimes she gets overwhelmed by her dresses but i think she nailed it with all her looks. the black deep v dress with sequin waist she wore to close the show was impeccable.

    • carol says:

I think its the best Kristen has looked on the red carpet in a while.

Madeline’s dress and shoes are killer IMO. Not sure about the hair but she looks lovely.

  3. Lorelei says:

I’m surprised I’m saying this but I really like Laura Linney’s dress.

  4. Lucy says:

I’m always in awe of how much of a chameleon Madeline is. She always looks different! I couldn’t believe she was the same girl from OITNB.

  5. Char says:

I would love Laura Liney’s dress in a deep rich colour.

  6. hnmmom says:

Um, I would not have known that was Laura Linney without being told. She does not look like herself at all. Is it the paler hair color? Or did she get an eye lift?

  7. PlayItAgain says:

I love Kristen’s raspberry gown. I love everything about it. So there.

  8. Pix says:

Laura Linney’s dress is a hard no but I still love her as an actress. No hate here.

  9. Josephine says:

I would like Kristen’s dress with a straighter skirt and black leather piping instead of the purple. It was too frothy for my taste and needed something to cut the sweet a bit. The color is nice on her, though.

    • Amy says:

It looks like a dress for a high school dance. It looks like it could be a $150 dress from a department store for the sweetheart swirl or something. I didn’t like it.

  10. Lizzie says:

i wish connie’s dress was green

  11. Sequinedheart says:

I did not enjoy Kristen Bells dress. The fabric looked cheap, and the cut made her look like one of those toilet paper dolls.

  12. L84Tea says:

Turn Kristen Bell’s dress white and poof, it’s a wedding dress.

  13. kristen says:

Laura Linney’s dress isn’t “Pepto pink” at all. It’s a really pale pink. Pepto Bismol is a much darker, bubble-gummy color. And Connie Britton’s dress is rose gold, not “aggressively pink.” I’m really confused by your bizarre color descriptions.

    • Pandy says:

Agree re the pink descriptions. I would like Laura’s dress more if it was more tailored in the waist area? Otherwise it just looks like a neverending dress somehow. Connies as well. Love the color and sequins but it looks large around the waist.

  14. Valiantly Varnished says:

I’m living for Madeline Brewer’s look. I think the whole thing: hair, makeup, dress, shoes is stunning. She’s a chameleon. I literally JUST realized she was on that awful Netflix show Hemlock Grove and she looked like a completely different person.

    • Lucy says:

I binge-watched that show only because of Bill Skarsgard. I know a job’s a job, but I’m so glad he’s moved on to better things.

  15. starkiller says:

Kristen looks…fine. I like the idea of Linney’s dress but it’s too busy—it needs to either have a high neck OR the beaded pattern OR the cape. Connie’s dress is awful—it actually makes her look dumpy, which is quite a feat.

Madeline is PERFECTION with the exception of the hair.

  16. homeslice says:

I can’t get past that I find Kristen to be one of the most annoying people…ugh.

  17. Other Renee says:

I love Kristen’s dress and styling. Yup. I do.

    Here’s my dissection…
Bell – Love everything, all aspects. And wow she looked gorgeous in the black dress with silver sparkle, how tiny she is. I think she’s a brilliant comic and the Frozen joke was delivered well.
Madeline – omg this woman is stuuuuunnnning! Wow! I love everything about her look, the makeup, the shoes, the dress fit/style/color. My only complaint would be the length but I guess you want to see the shoes. I’m not crazy about dresses that end at that length. I would have made it calf length or tea length and you could still see the shoes. But is that not formal enough if it ends shorter?
Connie – I like the sparkle, the color, even the shoulder pads, but the fit on the bust to waist it’s making her look bigger. It should be more fitted where it transitions to the waist. I like the disco looseness of it as it goes down. Also I feel like Connie’s hair looks a little too casual for the event. Maybe one side up with an interesting clip to keep that disco theme going.

  19. Ozogirl says:

Bell’s dress is gorgeous, but she needs jewelry to complete the look.

  20. I Choose Me says:

Connie is wearing Blanche Devereaux Lite. I like the detailing on Madeline’s dress but i feel like raising an eyebrow a la Morticia Addams and saying (I’m paraphrasing) “But darling . . . pastels?”
I love Laura Linney’s hair and styling. Kristen Bell’s whole look is underwhelming.

  21. Nikki says:

I adored Madeline Brewer’s styling; I think she looks stunning! I think her hair is pasted back too severely, and the pale color doesn’t contrast enough with her pale skin, but she’s still so gorgeous.
